In conjunction with the 2009 Melbourne Motor Show, HSV has announced the release of a special-edition Senator super-sedan. A less-expensive ( $69,990 AU - about $44,600 USD) alternative to the pricier, more lavishly-equipped Senator Signature ($80,500 AU - about $51,300 USD) that launched in 2006, the Senator will be limited to a total of just 89 cars. Thirty of these cars get manual transmissions; the rest will have automatics.

While the new Senator makes do without features such as the Magnetic Ride Control suspension found on the Senator Signature, the important part - the 6.2-liter LS3 V8 lump underhood - remains. It's good for 317 kilowatts (425 horsepower) and 550 Nm (405 lb-ft) of torque, which should be more than enough juice to generate a cloud of tire smoke visible from the moon.

Gallery: HSV Senator

[Source: HSV]
Melbourne 2009: Limited edition HSV Senator unveiled originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Feb 2009 10:28:00 EST.
Buying a new car or truck can be a very expensive endeavor. Style, safety, and reliability are usually at the top of shopper's lists, but the one area that will get you in the end is the all-important resale value.

Some vehicles, like the Honda Odyssey, hold their value extremely well, even after five years. Owners of the Dodge Caravan aren't nearly as lucky, with resale values after half a decade of ownership at a paltry 24-percent of the sticker. As Forbes' Dan Leinert points out, however, the Caravan actually scores quite well in JD Powers studies, so the horrendous resale value can be accounted for when considering the large incentives that are used to move hundreds of thousands of Dodge minivans off dealer lots.

Most of the other vehicles on the list have either gone a really long time without an update, like the Crown Victoria, or are just plain lousy vehicles, like the Kia Amanti. Either way, if your vehicle appears on the "Losing Value List," we'd suggest you hold onto it -- for a while.

You can see the list of the biggest losers after the jump.

If so, perhaps you share my strange appreciation for these haulers of human and commercial cargo. They rarely ever receive redesigns, just updates year after year that evolve them into something resembling modern transports.

The Ford E-Series dominates the van segment, holding court with 49.5% market share. The Blue Oval has given the old Econoline a new face for 2008 that draws heavily on the bold grille design of its Super Duty trucks, which isn't a bad connection to make when many of your customers work at construction sites or warehouses instead of cubicle-bedecked office spaces. All the sheetmetal ahead of the A-pillar is new, and that brick wall of a grille actually improves airflow to the engine, as well. Much of the van was kept the same, however, in deference to the large number of upfitters who take an E-Series and make something else out of it. If Ford were to come out with an all-new van, that entire industry would have to reinvest in tooling, equipment and machinery to work with the new design.

Check out additional impressions of the 2008 E-Series and Ford's official press release after the jump, and view the enw van from all angles in our high-resolution gallery.

[Source: Ford]

Gallery: 2008 Ford E-Series

Continue reading Van again: Ford announces 2008 E-Series

Van again: Ford announces 2008 E-Series originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Mar 2007 15:29:00 EST.
What choices does the dedicated GM "car guy" have when he wants to drive something that has all-around performance, is a rarity on the road and isn't a Corvette or Cadillac? Hopefully someone at The General has the insight to see that such a vehicle is already being produced and well within our reach.

Yesterday at the Sydney Auto Show, Holden's HSV group (Holden Special Vehicles) unveiled the HSV Grange saloon, yet another addition of its new E-Series family. Based on the new full-sized Caprice and aiming to join the ranks of the BMW's M, Mercedes' AMG, and Audi's S division offerings, the HSV Grange is designed to not just get into the fight, but to be the last one standing

The car looks great from any angle, can accommodate 5 adults comfortably, and should be able to hang with the best in straight-line acceleration and cornering. Power comes from a GM-sourced 6.0-liter LS2 V8 making 412 horsepower and 406 lb-ft. of torque and all of it is channeled through GM's new 6-speed sequentially-shifted automatic transmission.

This is a car that could help provide GM entry into the exclusive club dominated by the German big boys. With the economy booming and demand for high-end products greater than ever, having this vehicle join the upcoming Pontiac Grand Prix (another Holden-sourced product) could help lure the luxury performance enthusiast back into GM showrooms.

Well, if the price is right, that is. You see, the cost for the new HSV Grange in Australia? Roughly $100,000 AUD, which works out to around $76,000 USD. That kind of number could be a tough sell here.

Thanks to Ben for the tip!

This comes just a few days after shots of a ClubSport R8 were accidentally leaked onto the web.

The ClubSport R8 in the leaked photographs is joined by the the the similarly bespoilered GTS and the more staid Senator Signature. All three cars share the same powertrain: Chevy's 6.0L LS2 V8, which is mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. The combo is good for 411 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of asphalt-shredding torque. With the manual shifter, the E-Series cars run to 62 mph in 4.96 seconds. Cars equipped with the auto accomplish the feat in 5.04 sec. Either way you cut it, they're fast.

While they're based on the new VE Commodore, the HSV E-Series vehicles incorporate unique front and rear fascias and large vents aft of the front wheel wells to visually differentiate them from the standard-issue Commodores.
A supplied component, described as "a clutch mechanism that helps make the transmission shift smoothly betweenfirst and second gears" (sounds to us like the overrunning clutch), was found to be problematic, but thedefect was caught before any suspect vehicles were delivered to customers. The supplier isn't beingidentified.

More than 4,000 units of light truck, van, and Lincoln Town Car production were lost, costing Ford somewherein the neighborhood of $35M. The automaker says that making up for the stoppage won't be a problem, as they seem tohave a bit of extra capacity to put towards the effort, and F-150 inventories are current running at about 107 days ofsales.

The costly shutdownidles plants producing F-Series pickups, E-Series vans, Expeditions, and the Lincoln Town Car. 15,000 workers areaffected.

No word yet on how many units are affected, or how soon production will resume on these profit-rich vehicles, butan analyst has pegged the shutdown as costing some $34.4 million per day, before taxes.

One could be forgiven for thinking that the temperature in Hell is taking a precipitous dive after looking at thephoto above. After all, when was the last time you saw a Ford Econoline test mule, with its tacit promise of a comingupdate? After all, the current E-Series has been trudging on for decades with changes few and far between. This, despite consistently selling in big numbers.

Well, the fine folks at BlueOvalNews.com have snagged this tester rolling around Dearborn, with the camouflageclearly covering a revamped front end. Expect the soon-to-be-everywhere tri-bar grille to take up residence in thevan's snout, along with revamped headlights and fascia.

We can only hope beneath the refreshed bodywork, there are some substantive mechanical and interior changes to the200,000/year seller as well. BON reports that the Econoline revamp will likely hit dealers in 2007, with the promise ofa new 6.4-liter Powerstroke diesel available underhood.
