If you're Mercedes-Benz, then what you have here is a failure to keep your photo shoots under wraps. First Autobild came out with bare naked shots of the 2009 E-Class, and now German magazine Auto Zeitung has more shots of the car getting some fresh air.
With a minimal front end and a profile that rises seemingly without arc to a chunky back end, the car is reminiscent of a stretched Alfa Romeo Milano. We aren't sure how big these wheels are, but the car's increased upright stance makes them look exceptionally small. As usual with the launch of revolutionary E-Class designs, the car could take some time to get used to, but by the time E-Classes are clogging roads worldwide they will look perfectly natural.
There will be some excitement in the engine choices, including a 204 hp turbodiesel Bluetec, a BlueHybrid lump shared with the S400, and a 550 hp V8 in the AMG. The new E will also benefit from closer association with its spin-offs. Now that the CLK is no more, the E sedan will receive more of the spotlight that shines on its coupe and convertible siblings. If Mercedes doesn't get tired of the clandestine attention, we'll see the sedan for the first time at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, with the other variants to follow at Frankfurt that same year.
Autobild is hardly a bastion of integrity on newsstands in Germany, so its cover story proclaiming it has "Exclusive Photos" of the new Mercedes-Benz E-class "without camouflage" needs to be taken with the appropriate grains of salt. However, based on the various reports we've seen over the past year, these images of the E-class are spot on, if not official pics from M-B.
The new front fascia is an interesting amalgamation of the C- and S-class' front ends, with an upright grille framed by two-piece headlamps, a sculpted front bumper and LED indicators. The sides of the new E incorporate a C-class-inspired swage line, while the rear taillights wrap half-way around the fenders.
Autobild reports that the new E-class will be unveiled in March, so expect to get all the details from Geneva next year. Sales will likely begin in Europe next summer, with the U.S. model arriving shortly thereafter.
The launch of the next Mercedes-Benz E-class is right around the corner and Car's spies were able to catch a mildly camo'd mule undergoing testing. The prototype is unmistakably M-B, with a new front fascia that appears to split the difference between the swoop CLS's headlamps and the more conservative eyes of the C- and S-class. Underneath the cloaked sheet metal is Mercedes' new W212 mid-size sedan platform, which ditches the electronic braking system of the last generation (Benz dealers rejoice!) in favor of conventional hydraulic stoppers, and utilizes a four-link front suspension and a multi-link rear arrangement coupled with M-B's Active Body Control (ABC) system. Naturally, there will be gizmos galore, including a new electronic road sign reading system, night-vision pulled from the S-class and a host of gasoline- and diesel-powered engines that will top out with the 6.2-liter V8 from AMG.
According to Car, the new E will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show next March, with sales beginning later that summer.
Mercedes is moving beyond the neo-retro theme it's cultivated for its E-Class middle child. The C-Class has established some new familial cues with its recent redesign, and Autocar is reporting that the E-Class will expand on those themes. Tauter, edgier, and crisper are the words used to describe the new look, and Autocar's rendering certainly backs up its statement. The attendant increase in bulk that seems to plague each new generation will hopefully be held in check by further use of weight-saving construction techniques and materials.
Powering the new E-Class will be the 3.5-liter V6 with direct injection (E35), as well as newly revised V8s. Based on the current 4.5- and 5.5-liter V8s (M273), the new versions will pick up direct injection, as well as efficiency and performance tweaks. More exciting, perhaps, will be a hybrid model by 2010, and BLUETEC diesels. With a mileage target of 47 mpg, the hybrid is not likely to follow the "V12 performance with V8 consumption" model of the Lexus LS, but will still do that Benz thing; get you there stylishly ,safe and comfortably cosseted.
Autoblog's Eric Bryant reports that Mercedes-Benz has put together a unique international event to promote its new E-Class - a fuel economy run from Paris to Beijing. A fleet of 33 E-Class diesel-powered sedan will cover the 450,000 kilometers in only 26 days.
Thirty of the E-Class models will be equipped with European-spec V6 diesels, while the remaining three will be powered by U.S.-spec "Bluetec" engines.
The event kicks off October 21, 99 years after the world's first transcontinental auto race, which ran from Peking to Paris. The winner of the event will be the team that achieves the lowest fuel consumption, rather than the fastest time.
Mercedes-Benz is eager to promote its new E-Class in the Chinese market, where the company has just launched local production. More pics and the official press release after the jump.
DaimlerChrysler reported Monday that it has already booked more than 30,000 orders for the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which only went on sale in Europe June 10, after its world premiere at this year's New York Auto Show (above). A phased roll-out in other markets will get under way in the coming months.
The E-Class is Mercedes-Benz's second biggest model line, selling over 1 million units for the previous version, which debuted in early 2002. It is the biggest selling "business car" in Europe, dominating the segment with a 30 percent share in Europe and a 38 percent share in the German market.
The E-Class is being promoted as the safest vehicle in its segment, with Mercedes Benz's PRE-SAFE system offered as standard equipment. (The PRE-SAFE system automatically activates safety measures for the driver and front seat passenger when it determines that an accident is imminent.) Optional safety equipment includes Mercedes' Intelligent Light System.
A unique promotional event for the new car is planned for October, when a fleet of 33 diesel vehicles begin a road trip leave the Paris Motor Show headed for Beijing. Interested? You can apply for a ride at www.e-class-experience.com.
