It's not every day that Caterham comes out with a new car. After all, the core of its business is centered around a 55-year-old design. But the SP/300.R is an all-new product, a clean-sheet design. And after unveiling the track car built in collaboration with renowned racing chassis manufacturer Lola, the first example has been delivered.

The recipient of SP/300.R #1 is the car's US distributor, Dyson Racing. Dyson will use its SP/300.R as a demonstration vehicle to drum up sales for the racer, which promises to rival Radical in the growing market for purpose-built, LMP-style track cars. We've added more photos to the gallery and a pair of videos after the jump (along with the press release).
Continue reading Caterham delivers first production SP/300.R to the U.S. [w/videos]

Caterham delivers first production SP/300.R to the U.S. [w/videos] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 28 Apr 2012 10:02:00 EST.
It's official, ladies and gents: the Caterham SP/300.R is coming to America. (What, the ladies read Autoblog too. Right?)

The SP-what-now, you ask? The SP/300.R. It's the newest product from Caterham, and one of the few it has ever done that has nothing to do with the Lotus Seven. It's a track car in the mold of an LMP racer. It debuted at the beginning of the year with a 300-horsepower turbocharged Ford Duratec, and you can place an order for yours any day now.

Intriguingly, the factory opted not to go with Caterham USA, the company that imports and distributes all manner of Sevens across these United States, but gave the SP/300.R contract to Dyson Racing. If that name sounds familiar, it should. The racing team just tied up both the driver and team titles in the American Le Mans Series, a feather in the team's cap that has, since 1974, competed in everything from Grand-Am and Trans-Am to Champ Cars and Indy.

The America-bound examples of the SP/300.R will be shopped partially completed to Dyson's facility in Poughkeepsie, New York, where they'll undergo final assembly before delivery. So why Dyson over Caterham USA? The SP/300.R is built around a Lola chassis, and few have the kind of experience with Lola that Dyson Racing does.
Continue reading Dyson Racing to distribute Caterham-Lola SP/300.R in U.S.

Dyson Racing to distribute Caterham-Lola SP/300.R in U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 08:30:00 EST.
The American Le Mans Series (ALMS) and its technical operations affiliate, International Motorsports Association (IMSA), has formally approved a butanol blend as the fifth energy source for race cars in the series. ALMS entrants are already running on E10 (10 percent ethanol), cellulosic E85, diesel and hybrid-electric power. The first team expected to use butanol on a full-time basis will be Dyson Racing with its Mazda-powered Lola prototypes. Dyson first used butanol on an experimental basis in one of its cars during the Petit Le Mans and Laguna Seca races at the end of the 2009 season.

For now, the approved fuel is a blend of 20 percent biobutanol and 80 percent ethanol (iBE20) and only prototypes will be allowed to use it. For the first two races at Sebring and Long Beach, cars running iBE20 will have to carry an extra 30 kilograms of ballast until the performance impact is assessed. From the Laguna Seca race in May, the extra weight will be removed.

The butanol fuel is being supplied by Dyson's primary sponsor, British Petroleum. Butanol has a number of advantages over ethanol as a fuel, starting with energy density. Gasoline has 32 megajoules per liter while butanol has 29.2 MJ / L and ethanol has only 19.6 MJ / L. Butanol also has a much lower heat of vaporization than ethanol, allowing for easier cold starts. Because its characteristics are closer to gasoline, it can be used without resorting to stainless steel fuel lines and higher flow injectors. However, its high melting point requires it to be blended with gasoline to prevent gelling in cold weather.

When we spoke with American Le Mans Series CEO Scott Atherton at the Detroit Auto Show last January, he revealed that discussions were being held between the series and parties interested in racing with a new fuel. At the time, he declined to reveal the nature of the fuel but expected to announce something during the 2009 season. We're now down to the second to last race of 2009 and a fourth series fuel has finally arrived.

Dyson Racing's LMP2 #16 Lola-Mazda is running unclassified at this weekend's Petit Le Mans because its fuel tank will be filled with a blend of biobutanol and ethanol. This is the first use of butanol in an ALMS car. Dyson has been working with its primary sponsor BP and engine supplier Mazda to develop the new fuel which is currently produced from sugar cane but can also be produced from cellulosic sources. Butanol has several advantages over ethanol including higher energy density allowing mileage and power closer to that of gasoline. What's more, because it doesn't have the same tendency to absorb water (which causes corrosion), it can be blended with gasoline in higher concentrations without modifying the engines. Hopefully, we'll see cars running for points fueled by butanol all season long in 2010. Check out our high-res gallery below and the official press release after the jump.
In the case of the first customer-ordered '07 Porsche RS Spyder, home is Poughkeepsie, NY, where Dyson Racing is headquartered.

The car depicted above and in the attached gallery will be joined by its stablemate sometime in February, and the pair will take on the competition in the reinvigorated LMP2 class. P2 will also see three teams running Acura's new prototype racer, as well as Roger Penske's factory-backed Spyders in their DHL livery (one of which is visible in the transporter shown above as well -- check the gallery to see it).

For more info on the delivery of Dyson's new ride, check out Porsche's press release after the jump.

Related Posts:

You'll recall that Porsche's official development partner, Penske Racing, ran a pair of the DHL-liveried Spyders for the 2006 season.

The cars Rob Dyson's team will run are the new 2007 models, which are more aerodynamic (and dare we say better looking) than last year's 1st gen cars. They will be identical to the cars Penske runs, and they are sure to add even more juice to a very energized LMP2 class that's also welcoming Acura into the fold next year. In fact, LMP2 appears to be the class to watch, as Dyson's departure from the LMP1 class leaves reigning champion Audi Sport and Autocon Motorsport alone to duke it out for the P1 crown. (Danbury, CT-based Highcroft racing left P1 as well and is one of the teams that will field the new Acura racer.)

When you consider that the R10 TDIs went undefeated in P1 last season, it doesn't look like that division will be a source of much drama. Most people will wait for the utter steel cage match that will be Audi vs. Peugeot in a diesel-fueled France vs. Germany duel at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

It should be great fun to watch Chris Dyson and Guy Smith in the #20 car and Butch Leitzinger and Andy Wallace in the #16 car as they do battle in in what has become a substantial LMP2 team roster. The 12 Hours of Sebring can't arrive soon enough.

(Press releases, #20 car livery after the jump)

[Sources: Dyson Racing, American Le Mans Series, Porsche]
Continue reading Dyson Racing jumps to LMP2, will race Porsche RS Spyders

Dyson Racing jumps to LMP2, will race Porsche RS Spyders originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 20 Dec 2006 10:04:00 EST.
