Well, two, as reports emerging from Europe suggest.

Following hot on the heels of the 695 Tributo Ferrari unveiled in Frankfurt and the rally-spec R3T presented in Sanremo, come spy photos of an Abarth version of the ragtop Fiat 500C. Reports first emerged of an Abarth 500C a couple of months back, but what looks to be a working example has been spied at Abarth's Officine 83 Mirafiori facility. Sources expect a possible debut in March at the Geneva Motor Show.

Meanwhile, there are also more reports of an updated Punto Abarth. The hot hatch is expected to wear cosmetic modifications concurrent with the new Fiat Punto Evo, and the 170hp 1.4-liter MultiAir four from the Alfa Romeo MiTo Quadifoglio Verde is tipped to replaced the existing 155hp engine. Reports also suggest that the Abarth could be one of the first Fiat group products to showcase the company's new six-speed dual-dry-clutch transmission.

While the new Punto isn't expected to make it Stateside, there's a strong chance the Abarth 500 will. However there's no word yet as to if and when the 500 range might get the MultiAir engine and DSG.
And it is. Case in point: BMW's new DCT on its latest-generation M3. This new transmission from Munich is so complicated that apparently even BMW couldn't get it right the first time, so they're issuing a recall. The problem, as concluded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is that under hard braking the transmission's software is prone to initiate a multi-stage downshift, which could cause the car to stall. The solution, however, should be fairly simple, as BMW is asking all owners of 2008 or 2009 M3s equipped with the DCT (about 2,500 in the United States) to come in for a software update, free of charge, at their local dealership. After the software update, M3 owners can perform all the panic stops they want in smooth-shifting bliss.

The official recall notice can be viewed on the NHTSA website. Thanks for the tip, TKE!

Fiat announced earlier today a new family of six-speed transmissions, called C635, that will premiere as a manual in June 2009, followed by a dual-clutch version in September 2009 before the automated manual comes out in 2010.

The C635s will be offered on a range of Fiat products including Lancias and Alfa Romeos, and will be capable of handling 35kgm of torque. They'll be built by Fiat Powertrain Technologies at its Verrone plant 75km outside of Turin, handled by a workforce that will more than double to 1100 staff. Called the Dual Dry Clutch (DDC) transmission, Fiat's will follow Volkswagen's seven-speed second-generation DSG (which also switches from wet clutches to lighter-weight dry ones when it debuts on the Golf this month), Volvo's Powershift transmission (due next month) and the BMW M3's new M-DCT (available from March).

FoMoCo's group veep of global product development, Derrick Kuzak, spoke at the Automotive News World Congress recently and hit on a number of points that will shape Ford's future.

To begin with, product development, styling changes and technical improvements will be on a three-year cycle, keeping it inline with many of the top tier automakers with which Ford aims to better compete. Recognizing that design is at the forefront of most consumers' minds, Kuzak said that many of the enhancements to Ford's lineup will be design-driven, noting that, "You don't design for the masses; each vehicle has a target audience."

Ford CEO Alan Mulally has talked about the reduction and proliferation of global platforms at length and Kuzak reiterated that utilizing both global architectures and engines is a cornerstone to Ford's resurgence. Kuzak says that by 2012 around 70-percent of Ford vehicles offered worldwide will be built on eight platforms.

Kuzak went on to reconfirm that the Verve is on its way to North America, but don't expect to see it until 2010 at the earliest. He also said that Ford's EcoBoost engine system will be in 43 vehicles in North America in the next four years, making up 500,000 units in NA and almost 750,000 units worldwide. Finally, he also noted that mating the EcoBoost mills with an "electronically shifted manual gearbox" could increase fuel economy by 20-percent and pay for itself in about two-and-a-half years. If that means more dual-clutch gearboxes like the one about to debut on Volvos, then more good things are underway.

[Source: Autoweek]
Ford to adopt three-year vehicle cycles, plus more Blue Oval updates originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 Jan 2008 15:01:00 EST.
In advance of its public unveiling at the Geneva show in March, and after releasing a teaser photo, Volkswagen's Czech subsidiary Skoda has additional photos and details on its upcoming new flagship.

The aptly-named Superb is based on the Volkswagen Passat platform, though stretched out to offer more space. Its range of features includes direction-changing headlights, a new electronic climate control system, and automatic parking assist. Compared with the model it replaces, the new Superb grows another 35mm longer and 18mm wider, but hunkers down 8mm lower and shrinks in wheelbase by 42mm, actually increasing the overhangs contrary to industry trends.

The Superb also wears its own unique bodywork and badging, but like all top-of-the-line Czech models, the best view is around back where the Skoda features a useful hatchback setup. Motivation comes from a range of six engine options - three gasoline and three diesels - topping out with a 260-hp 3.2-liter V6. A five- or six-speed manual will come standard depending on which engine is chosen, but the Superb will also have an available DSG twin-clutch transmission option.

Although the new Superb doesn't come across as the most exciting thing goin' down in Switzerland this coming March, it appears Skoda put together a surprisingly good package.

As reported earlier this year, VW has plans to introduce another cog onto its six-speed DSG unit, while at the same time dropping the wet clutch arrangement for a dry-clutch setup. Now it's official: the new seven-speed DSG not only boasts another gear and dry clutches, but it's the first time the DSG transmission is able to be mounted for a front-traverse setup.

The seven-speed 'box will originally be available on the Golf and Golf Plus models abroad, equipped with the 1.4-liter TSI engine and 1.9-liter TDI mill, and the 1,750 euro premium over the base model also includes a hill-start assist system. The next generation, Borg-Warner-developed DSG has the capacity to channel 184 lb.-ft. of torque to the wheels, which should suit both models well, but it will need some beefing up before it becomes standard on more performance-oriented models.
Continue reading VW introduces 7-speed DSG on Euro Golf and Golf Plus

VW introduces 7-speed DSG on Euro Golf and Golf Plus originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Dec 2007 14:57:00 EST.
BorgWarner's dual-clutch DSG (direct-shift gearbox) transmission systems have been showing up in Volkswagen and Audi vehicles since 2003. The system utilizes two clutches to select gears, allowing for smooth, uninterrupted power delivery. The clutches are electro-hydraulically actuated, allowing for virtually instant gear changes and control logic that pre-selects the next required gear. While BorgWarner's original DSG design has allowed for greater fuel-efficiency over traditional automatic transmissions, it has had room for improvement. The original design is a wet-clutch system, meaning the clutches operate in a bath of oil to keep temperatures down and eliminate wear. The oiling system requires large pumps to keep up the constant flow through the system and it also creates hydraulic drag that affects efficiency.

However, with recent announcements coming out of the BorgWarner camp, it is apparent they are still on the leading edge of dual-clutch transmission development. The company is slated to provide systems for the upcoming Nissan GT-R and BMW M3. These are high power output applications that would be hindered by BorgWarner's original DSG design without improvements. For these next generation systems the wet-clutch system has been changed to a moist-clutch system requiring less lubrication and therefore a smaller oil pump. This also reduces hydraulic drag on the system, thus reducing drivetrain losses. The clutch materials have also been improved for heat transfer and wear properties. The use of materials that do not degrade with friction or waste mechanical energy through heat generation allow the clutch design to live in these more stressful environments and to do so more efficiently.

For whatever reason, Porsche dropped the idea in favor manually shifted automatic TipTronic gearboxes for its production cars.

Volkswagen finally brought the dual clutch system to the masses a few years ago with its DSG units. It looks like Porsche will soon finally add the setup to its road cars in the next few years with the brand name it used on the race cars - PDK for Porsche Doppel Kupplungen or Porsche Double Clutches. The TipTronic paddle shifters will be retained so that the driver can execute shifts without releasing the steering wheel. No word yet on timing or application, but as soon as we know you will.

[Source: MotorAuthority]
Roadgoing Porsches may finally get dual clutch gearboxes originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 20 Jun 2007 12:35:00 EST. Dubbed the M DCT (M Dual Clutch Transmission), the cog swapper is expected to speed up shifts and shave a couple of tenths off the car's 0-60 time, which should put it squarely in the 4.5-second range, if not quicker. The system, developed and produced by Getrag, will likely be better received than BMW's maligned SMG trannies and eventually replace those systems in the 3-Series and 5-Series lineups. The M DCT will be controlled with the requisite paddle shifters on the steering wheel and an odd little joystick control on the center console like the one in the M5 and M6.
Volkswagen's DSG has been around a while and offers fewer compromises than less purpose-built manuals. Ford's champing at the bit to get their own trick DSG-like transmission into production, and it looks like we'll see such a unit drop soon with the PowerShift moniker. Gearbox maker Getrag has several different variations on the theme, and word is they'll start off in PAG brand like Volvo first and then trickle down to other Fords as a premium option. Volvo is a logical entry point, as the marque's S40 T5 can be mentioned in the same breath as the A3 without the entire room snickering.

The core engineering seems to be essentially the same, with the packaging, max ratio spread and durability of the innards varying among the different configurations. Applications cover the various vehicle architectures of FR, FF, and MR, plus AWD, though we're not sure if the center differential is a seperate unit or integral to the trans. They're mostly six-speeds, although there is a seven-speed version with triple cone synchronizers and a max torque capacity of 750Nm. The exciting thing is that these transmissions reportedly have Job 1 dates in 2007, so we should see the debut soon in something. Europe will likely get them first in the diesel S40/V50s. There's a version rumored to be destined for the Fiesta, which is destined here, so before long, we may all be revelling in the perfectly executed blip-blip downshift as we clip the apex and get back on the power to exit fast while behind the wheel of a Ford vehicle.

[Source: GM Inside News]

Update on Ford's aspiration for a dual-clutch transmission originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 28 Apr 2007 13:12:00 EST.
This ad takes us back to our childhood, when transmissions came in manual and automatic. That was it. Today's kids have sequentials, continuously variable ratios, dual clutches, paddle shifters, manually-shifted automatics, automatic-shifting manuals and a gazillion other variations to confuse them when pretending to drive.

We could try to explain the technology behind Volkswagen's DSG transmission until we're blue in the face, or you could simply follow the jump to watch a couple of kids do it for us. It's so simple, it's child's play.

After all, this is our favorite rear-engined sports car. Returning even closer to its roots, the two-beam round headlamps and larger air inlets look very 993 Turbo. The cleaner look should be an improvement that the loyalists will appreciate and the masses will completely miss.

Actually, the air scoops match the look of the restyled Cayenne, and the integrated turn indicators somewhat mimic the current Turbo 997, albeit integrated rather than "free floating" like on the Turbo. The new lower lip is more noticeable here too. It creates a continuous line around the nose that continues along the rockers and into the tail, where we'll see new LED tail lamps.

Expect similar mechanical changes to those being done on the Cayenne, and an interior upgrade that should be evolutionary like those on the outside. New direct-injection and a DSG option should keep the new 911 at the top of the heap.

[Source: World Car Fans]
Spy Photos: Porsche 911 again originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Feb 2007 08:28:00 EST. We had been holding off on posting anything about it, but thought that if it does come to fruition, you might like to know in advance.

The latest bit of news comes courtesy of Motor Authority, that points to last year's unveiling of the M5 in Geneva just as sales were about to begin a few months later. According to MA, the M3 will be powered by an all-new 4.0L V8 that will send 420 HP through a newly developed dual-clutch DSG-like transmission. Knowing that lightweight materials are essential to beat out rivals like Audi's RS4, the upcoming IS-F and the forthcoming C63 AMG, BMW may employ carbon fiber in some of the M3's body panels.

Our crew is beginning to pack our bags, power adapters and photo equipment for our jaunt to Switzerland, so rest assured that if BMW does drop the M3 next week, you'll be looking at pictures and reading the details shortly after the veil is lifted.

[Source: Motor Authority]
420 HP, DSG-equipped M3 Concept coming to Geneva? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Feb 2007 08:02:00 EST. Various sources have confirmed that Volvo plans to offer a DSG in the diesel versions of it S40 and V50 vehicles, beginning in late 2007.

Initially, only the Swedish marque's oil burners will come equipped with a six-speed DSG, with other models benefiting from the new(ish) technology over the coming years. In an article in Automotive News, sources confirmed that the Ford Focus and C-Max people mover, along with other small vehicles, would be fitted with the dual-clutch tranny, currently under development with Getrag.

In addition to a 10-percent boost in fuel economy, Volvo and Ford vehicles equipped with a DSG will profit from smoother, quicker shifts and a certain amount of street-cred, that up until now, only VW and Audi have had a lock on.

[Source: Automotive News -- Sub. And let us be the first to say: hot, hot, hot. Pardon us but we're totally grooving on the Audi R8-like air intakes at the bottom corners of the tweaked front fascia. Yeah, that's right, we said Audi R-like. Clearly the car has new side sills and a new rear skirt to accomodate a pair of large diameter tail pipes. The extra chrome brightwork on the Passat R36 is also a nice touch. Inside the car are deeply bolstered buckets, what appears to be faux stamped aluminum trim, and aluminum pedals. From what we know, the 3.6-liter FSI V6 in this hopped up Passat will produce 296 horsepower that's routed to all four wheels via VW's 4Motion all-wheel drive. Some quick sniks of the DSG transmission should propel the R36, which will be available as either a sedan or wagon, to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 155 mph. Phew, never thought we'd say that about a Passat. The car will reportedly debut at the Essen Motor Show in Germany in early Decemer.

Follow the jump for more pics of the Passat R36.

[Source: Autoweek.nl, LLN]

Related posts:
Here in the US, we tend to look at the use of the technology by VW as a performance enhancement, primarily. It is a marriage of the directness of a manual transmission with the ease of use of an automatic, while providing quicker shifting than is humanly possible. BorgWarner, the supplier of the dual cluch technology for VW's DSG transmission, is setting its sights on the low-cost market as a way to offer automatic shifting in the 600cc to 1.0-liter segment. Currently, CVT and low-cost automatics are being used in this segment, and dual-clutch technology can offer improved performance and fuel economy over standard automatic transmissions and lower cost than CVTs with less mechanical complexity.

According to CSM Worldwide, an automotive market consultantcy, manufacturers pay anywhere from €300 to €400 ($381 to $509) a unit for low-cost, four-speed automatics. CVTs can cost up to €1,400 ($1780), but dual-clutch transmissions offer a nice middle ground at about €950 ($1208).

While some of us still prefer to row our own gearboxes, technologies like dual-clutch offer a better compromise so that others who are not comfortable with selecting their own gear ratios can experience improved performance and fuel economy. Few would argue that a standard slushbox is a better alternative, especially in smaller displacement engines.

Finally! Audi has unveiled the Roadster variations of the Audi TT, which comes in two packages: the top-of-the-line 3.2L V6 TT equipped with quattro AWD and puts out 250 hp, and a FWD 2.0L TFSI base model producing 200 hp. Both models come available with six-speed manual transmissions or Audi's S-tronic dual-clutch system.

Audi chose to go the soft route with the roof, which comes in either black or dark gray, rather than utilizing a retractable hardtop. Audi claims that quietness has been improved thanks to a special layer within the material making up the roof, and utility is excellent as well -- the top can be opened up or closed in a mere 12 seconds at speeds of up to about 30 mph. The top still cuts into the cargo space (like you're gonna buy a TT to haul stuff anyway), but the good news is that Audi increased the trunk space 40 liters over the last TT.

We already knew what the design would look like thanks to some spy shots, but it's still certainly a nice car to look at. More high resolution shots can be after the jump.

Average motorists have enjoyed the DSG's smooth shifting and economical fuel consumption, while enthusiasts appreciate the trick technology and uber-quick gear changes. Volkswagen already announced that they plan on replacing all their automatic transmission vehicles with DSG in the next five years and here's a stat for you -- half of all GTIs sold are equipped with paddle shifters.

DaimlerChrysler has recognized the benefits of the DSG over conventional, torque converter-equipped automatics and has decided to invest $560 million in a new assembly plant in Kokomo, Indiana to manufacturer their own version of the DSG. Partnering with Getrag, the automaker plans on creating 700,000 units annually, with production set to begin in 2009. The models that stand to benefit from the new transmission are primarily front-wheel drive vehicles, including the Avenger, Sebring and all manner of minivan. Additionally, the transmission will find an ideal partner with D.C.'s new Phoenix V6 engine, which will also make an appearance in 2010.

Industry analysts recognize that the greatest source of competition with DSGs are the continuously variable transmissions (CVTs), but one expert cited in Automotive News expects that the number of DSG-equipped vehicles in the U.S. will rise from it's current 0.2-percent to 3.3-percent by 2012. The more the merrier in our eyes.

[Source: Automotive News - Sub. Autoblogger Eric Bryant snapped some pictures of the neat-looking veedub and forwarded along the official info from Volkswagen.

First things first: while the CrossGolf goes for a quasi-SUV look, it's still a front-drive-only vehicle. Like its cousin, the CrossPolo, the CrossGolf gets Audi Allroad-like trim on the bumpers and rockers. It also shares its younger brother's wheel design and gets a nice set of silver roof rails. Unfortunately, like the CrossPolo, it won't be available here.

Based on the tall-bodied Golf Plus, the CrossGolf offers a roomy and flexible interior for a car its size, and can be had with a little zip underhood. The two top engines are the 1.4 TSI and the 2.0TDI, each of which makes 140 horsepower. The base engines ( one gas, one diesel) are significantly less powerful. The 1.4 TSI and both TDI powerplants can be had with the DSG direct shift gearbox. a feature VW is quickly spreading around its lineup.

(Photos, press release after the jump)

[Source: VW]
Continue reading Paris Motor Show: Volkswagen CrossGolf

Paris Motor Show: Volkswagen CrossGolf originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 29 Sep 2006 10:17:00 EST.
