Driving a supercar upside down in a tunnel requires some fancy footwork, even if there isn't a clutch pedal to manipulate. Fortunately the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has got the right footwear thanks to a collaboration with Santoni. The Italian clothier, which has shared a longstanding relationship with Benz's performance house, has crafted these specially-made, FIA-certified driving shoes.

Presented recently at the Pitti Uomo 77 boutique in Milan, the SLS AMG driving shoes will be available to buyers - and presumably to fans - of the corresponding supercar in black, and soon in a variety of colors to compliment the high-performance machine. The laces, though, open like any other shoes, not like the gullwing they're made to accompany.

Tod's driving loafers and Ferraris go together like gin and vermouth, if not because every barchetta-driving playboy on the Amalfi Coast is sporting a pair, then because Ferrari's longtime chairman Luca di Montezemolo also sits on the board of the leathercrafter's company. But now the two companies have teamed up to bridge the divide with a special line of loafers bearing the iconic Cavallino Rampante.

The shoes bear all the hallmarks of Tod's enduring design - comfort, flexibility, style and those little rubber nubs in lieu of actual soles, all the better for gripping the pedals. The Ferrari line upgrades with little prancing horses, insoles patterned after Ferrari seats and - in the case of the Gommino Mascherina Griglia - a badge on the tongue reminiscent of the GTO's grille, replacing the tassels or laces on the Leccetto or Laccetto Tubi GT. They're available in a variety of colors, but will set you back a little more than the horse-emblazoned Puma sneaks available at your local Foot Locker.

We've all seen people stepping out of exquisite sports cars dressed like total slobs, and the whole image thing just goes up in a cloud of smoke. Porsche Design seems to have made it its mission to complete the package, and to that end has released two new product lines.

Among the sportswear, luggage, appliances, power tools, mega yachts and everything else the German automaker's Austrian merchandising studio has come up with recently, Porsche Design released its signature fragrance line - called "The Essence" - about a year and a half ago, and has now followed up with a new take its calling "The Essence Intense." Not quite bottling that "new car smell," Porsche Design says Intense packs notes of myrtle, juniper and mandarin into a sleek bottle of frosted black glass and satin black brushed aluminum that goes a long way towards explaining the conspicuously strange shape of the new Panamera.

Of more interest to the enthusiast, however, might be Porsche Design's latest line of driving shoes. Positioned a little higher than the sneaks designed for Adidas, the latest collection of Porsche footwear is formal enough to wear to the office, and is designed for heel-and-toe work: The right sole is grooved for quick transition from gas to brake, while the left sole is designed to grip the clutch pedal.

Follow the jump for more information on both the new fragrance and the latest footwear collection, and check out the images in the galleries below.

California-based Piloti Inc. has earned a solid reputation among enthusiasts for their driving shoes, combining a comfortable fit with fashionable styling, everyday wearablity and optimal heel-and-toe shifting. Now the company is ambitiously expanding into the motorcycle market with its new Moto 800 boot.

The latest addition to the Piloti range promises to offer the same comfort as their driving shoes in a package designed to meet the needs of the two-wheel riders. The Piloti Moto 800 will sell for $150 a pair when it goes on sale in January, but it's already won the Editors' Choice Award from Popular Mechanics. Not a bad start to a new venture.

We can imagine what products might have been considered, but as fun as Michelin-branded, tire-tread imitating prophylactics might have been, more sensible heads prevailed, and Bibendum will be touting his own line of shoes soon.

This summer we were invited to Michelin's introduction of its new MXV4 tires at Barber Motorsports, where they also had a display of MXV4-inspired footwear. We've finally been able to get a pair of the Belair model into the Autoblog Closet and put a few miles on them.

First, we have to say these shoes are by far the slowest mode of transportation ever tested by the Autoblog crew. Despite features like a sole that resembles Michelin's touring tire, sleek lines, lightweight construction, and wind-cheating aerodynamics, we never were able to get above about 5 mph.

Continued after the jump.

Gallery: Michelin MXV4 Shoes

Continue reading In the Autoblog <strike>Garage</strike> Closet: Michelin MXV4 driving shoes

In the Autoblog <strike>Garage</strike> Closet: Michelin MXV4 driving shoes originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Nov 2007 16:33:00 EST.
