As much as we like our drive-in movies and drive-through restaurants, could there be anything more appropriate than a drive-in car museum? We think not. Unfortunately, such an obvious and awesome thing isn't on its way to America.

Instead, China, a relatively new player on the world transportation scene, is the country planning to erect a drive-in car museum, meaning most of us will probably never get the chance to visit. Ah well, at least the design is thoughtful and innovative. Francesco Gatti, chief architect at design firm 3GATTI in Italy, is responsible for the unique shape of the museum, which allows drivers to climb to the top in their cars and then walk back down via an inner spiral ramp. It seems the structure can be replicated in origami... and now we have a project for the rest of the day.
Head to the snack bar and get something to munch on. Suggestions pop up on the screen in case you need some inspiration. The concessions are multitudinous, from sweet candy bars to crispy fish sandwiches (don't they look scrumptious?), you can push your cholesterol way into bad numbers for just a few bucks. If the first horror show got you all wound up, there's even a smorgasbord of cigarette selections to soothe your frayed nerves, just in time to run back before The Terror starts!

Missed Part 1? How you recreate the experience is up to you. The simplest method would be to just plop your laptop on the hood, but the screen is a bit small for that, and the sound would be worse than those little speakers that clipped on the windows. Kicking the video out via HDMI to an LCD or plasma would be better, you could even mount the screen in the garage! We don't recommend idling the motor, though.

Most drive-ins now have either been turned into bumper crops of McMansions, or stand barren. It's an eerie sight to see orderly rows of 1-meter high poles standing at attention in a sea of failing asphalt, vegetation pushing through the cracks, detritus blowing like tumbleweeds across the sun-bleached decay. Back in the day, double-features of spooky movies were de-rigeur at drive-ins, it's ironic now that the drive-in would be a perfect setting for one of those creepy films. Details of what's on the marquee are after the jump, and it's double-feature night (Well, day, really. -Ed.) at the Autoblog Drive-In, so be sure to be back from the snack bar for Part 2, coming soon.
Continue reading VIDEO: At the Autoblog Drive-In Part 1

VIDEO: At the Autoblog Drive-In Part 1 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Aug 2007 13:03:00 EST. The latest is called Drive In and features scaled up model parts from a chrome-heavy hot rod. Most readers responded that they'd love to terrorize the Mrs. with this thing on their living room wall, but at the $3,000 price we reported, little Sally wouldn't get her braces and dear old Dad would be sleeping on the couch for many nights to come.

It turns out that the folks at Jellio are car fans as well as addicted Autoblog readers. They heard your cries and contacted us to offer a Christmas deal just for our readers. The wall art is currently listed on their site for $2,500, but Jellio is offering any Autoblog reader 25% off on the Drive In, a savings of $625 for a new price of $1,875. That's $1,100 less than what we originally reported the cost to be, and could be in your price range for some campy wall art to decorate the rec room. Jellio's offer to Autoblog readers will go until the stroke of midnight on December 31st, so you'll still have time to return all the presents you didn't want and get this instead.

Follow the jump for details on how to purchase a Drive In at the special Autoblog price, and if other companies are interested in giving big discounts to Autoblog readers (we're looking at you automakers), feel free to contact us.
Continue reading Jellio hearts Autoblog - offers 25% off on Drive In just for you

Jellio hearts Autoblog - offers 25% off on Drive In just for you originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 14 Dec 2006 18:32:00 EST. First it produced a limited series of wall art called Turbo that resembled the plastic parts of a 70s era model car kit. Jellio has revisited that concept with its newest piece called Drive In that this time incorporates pieces from a hot rod model of the 50s. Produced from polyurethane resin and weighing about 20 lbs., the apx. 3.5 x 3.5-foot Drive In is secured to your wall by three flush-mounted brackets. In order to get one, however, you'll have to not only stomach the $3,000 price tag, but also convince your spouse that the Metallic Silver tribute to your model building youth goes just fine with your living room's décor. Hey, you can always say you were considering mounting a Lamborghini Countach above the sofa.

[Source: Jellio]
Jellio Drive In - the very model of automotive wall art originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Nov 2006 18:03:00 EST.
