Bring together a 550-horsepower Jaguar XKR-S and a rain-soaked skidpad, and it's almost impossible to not end up in a sideways drift... accidental or on purpose. With that in mind, the gang over at Autocar got a hold of the monstrous XKR-S for the latest installment of "Will it Drift?," only they raised the stakes a little by attempting the feat with a blindfolded driver

We've driven the XKR-S a number of times here at Autoblog (including a First Drive, Review and Quick Spin), so we weren't at all surprised to learn that blind drifting in the car is possible. But what is remarkable is the ease at which it happened. This, of course, can be credited as much to the car as to the driver, Steve Sutcliffe. Check out the impressive video for yourself, which is posted after the jump.
Continue reading Can a Jaguar XKR-S be drifted while blindfolded?

Can a Jaguar XKR-S be drifted while blindfolded? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 27 Dec 2012 18:40:00 EST.
Every once in a long spell, we get an email asking how an ambitious young writer can work his or her way into the automotive sphere. The answer is always the same: work harder. Work harder than you ever have in your entire life. Work harder than anyone else around you. Sacrifice your time, your happiness and monetary gain just to work harder. Abandon your notions of fairness. They will only slow you down. Never fool yourself into thinking your hard work entitles you to anything. It does not. It only prepares you to work harder.

Of course, these lessons apply to more than just babbling about cars day in and day out. Just ask the guys of Formula Drift. We're not talking about big names like Tanner Foust, Vaughn Gittin Jr. or Sam Hubinette. No, those guys have made it. They're living or have lived the life of sponsorship deals and rampant success. For the rest of the field, making it to the next event means scraping pennies, taking crap jobs and yes, lots of hard work. Check out the awesome video below by 1Kind Studio to see what we mean.
Continue reading Drifting through the eyes of drifters

Drifting through the eyes of drifters originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 18:58:00 EST.
Probably the less said about this video, the better. According to the video uploader, the event takes place during the "Still Ballin' Car Club Nite Out" (yes, really), but we aren't sure if it's a proper race or just for show. Heck, we can't even figure out where the event took place.

At any rate, a pair of drivers are seriously going at it when what looks to be a 240SX pulling up the rear clips a corner and does some unintended tumbling. Thankfully, the Nissan driver was apparently alright. We'll leave it at that - follow the jump to see what happens. Beware, there's some explicit language in the video, including the music.
Continue reading Watch this Nissan 240SX roll during a drifting exhibition

Watch this Nissan 240SX roll during a drifting exhibition originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 Jan 2012 14:58:00 EST.
As a genre, automotive journalists have seen (and done) some pretty stupid things done in some pretty stupid cars. Collectively, we've been airborne in more vehicles than are worth counting, roasted enough tires to make Al Gore weep, and generally made asses of ourselves on closed-course manufacturer track days. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it.

Surprisingly, all of that stupidity has been eclipsed by the efforts of a few determined motorists in the Middle East. If the comments on YouTube are to be believed, the drivers and passengers in the slew of workaday family sedans in the video after the jump are participating in something called hajwalah, wherein drivers throw their vehicles into an extended slide before eventually correcting and continuing along their way. We've seen videos like this before out of the Middle East, and we're thankful this one didn't end in a crackup and bloodshed the way some others do.

Crazy drivers can be found the world over, and normally, most aren't worth talking about. A few things are notable about this particular video, however. For one, the guys behind the wheel are kicking their vehicles around in what looks like full traffic in front of dump trucks and beside school busses. For another, none of them appear to be wearing seat belts. Finally, there's a smattering of small arms fire from open car windows at the same time.

We're nearly without the words to convey just how stupid this kind of driving is, but even we have to say, we didn't know that humble family-toting iron like the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata and Toyota Camry could be pushed to such absurd slip angles - at least with such repeatability. Hit the jump to see for yourself.
Continue reading Middle East drifting daredevils go beyond the bounds of sanity... in family sedans

Middle East drifting daredevils go beyond the bounds of sanity... in family sedans originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Sep 2011 12:30:00 EST.
We can always rely on the good people at Motor Trend to stir up some genuine jealousy thanks to their excellently crafted videos. The team recently got their hands on the Lexus LFA and took the V10 monster out to an abandoned Marine base for a little frolicking in the wide-open spaces. They were kind enough to bring the video crew along for the ride, and the finished result is a lengthy clip that features plenty of sideways action without any prattling voice overs. Unfortunately, we don't get to hear that sinister engine wail or the tires beg for mercy. The whole shindig instead gets set to an impressively dramatic soundtrack.

Still, we'll never complain at the chance to watch the LFA turn its high-dollar wheels in anger. Odds are we'll get another look at the car and find out what the MT gurus thought soon enough. Hit the jump to check out the video clip for yourself in all of its high-definition glory.
Continue reading Motor Trend gets sideways with Lexus LFA

Motor Trend gets sideways with Lexus LFA originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 20 Jul 2011 18:57:00 EST.
If you like Ken Block's series of Gymkhana videos, then you'll definitely want to check out Vaughn Gittin Jr's latest flick featuring his Formula Drift Mustang. Gittin was recently visiting Saudi Arabia to perform a drifting demo at an event at the Al Reem Circuit, and he decided to stick around for an extra few days to get footage of him drifting on track. The result? Awesome.

Apparently, the track officials pretty much gave Gittin free reign of the entire complex, from the pit lane to the parking lots to the front straight, so the video shows him getting his Mustang sideways in a variety of locations. There's plenty of tire smoke, wonderful sounds from the naturally aspirated 5.4L V8, and even a few smashed rear fenders. Check the video out for yourself after the jump.
Continue reading Vaughn Gittin Jr. drifts his way through the Al Reem Circuit

Vaughn Gittin Jr. drifts his way through the Al Reem Circuit originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 19 Jul 2011 19:57:00 EST.
Unless this is footage from Zoolander 2: Blue Steel Drift Assassin, this drifter has a serious issue with the local authorities. We have to believe this is some kind of stunt rather than footage of someone actually driving fast and then furiously. Call us skeptical, but the placement of the cameraman is a bit too convenient, the road is a little too empty and the cop's guns remain holstered.
Click past the jump to watch the clip (judging by the banner over the bridge, it looks like it was shot in Malaysia), then render your verdict in the comments. Hat tip to Semjon!

Drifting on ice sounds a lot more exciting than Disney on Ice. At least to us, anyway.

A back-seat full of Japanese comedians may beg to differ after going for a sideways slide in the back seat of an older Mitsubishi Evo. There really isn't much for us to add to this clip because... well, we don't really know what's going on. We do know that the action is fast and furious while the comedians' expressions are of shock and sickness. Click past the jump and see the sideways-drama unfold for yourself.

Oh, and can we just say how crazy and insane - and undeniably entertaining - Japanese game shows tend to be?

The 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe is a lot of things. It's a luxury two-door that's also a muscle car. It's a supercharged beast with a fire-breathing LSA mounted under the hood. And it's also a smoke machine. Monticello Motor Club invited a slew of vehicles out for its first annual Drift with the Supercars event, and while a few dedicated drift cars showed up, a handful of other lust-worthy rides arrived to ruin their rubber. The CTS-V Coupe was on hand, sharing the track with a Ferrari 575 Maranello, C6 Corvette, 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS and a Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series.

The Cadillac fared exceptionally well against the rest of the competition and took home the title of Best Drift in New Car. Check out the tire-shredding, sideways action in the beautifully shot video after the jump.

This might be one of the coolest things we've ever seen... this year. There are hundreds of videos floating around the 'net of people drifting their hotted-up Nissan Zs, Ford Mustangs or Big Wheels around race tracks, public roads and abandoned airports, but this driver earns some extra bonus points for pulling it off in a vintage Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Diesel. Wagon.

As if you needed more reason to click through the jump and watch the video in its nearly seven-minute entirety, know that this driver not only has good taste in drift cars, but he has some serious skills to boot. Now, if we could only see this video remade starring the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG wagon... Hat tip to Anders!
You know those epically cool Ken Block videos where the DC Shoes scion comes up with incredibly creative ways to drift his purpose-built<strike> Subaru STI</strike> Ford Fiesta? Yeah, we love them too. In fact, we wish there were more clever drift videos out there on the Interwebs, and it looks like we may soon get our wish courtesy of Tanner Foust.

Mr. Autoblog Podcast himself is starting up a new drift series in March and he's trying to get your interest piqued by releasing a tantalizing 18 second teaser of what's to come. Hit the jump to watch Tanner and his rear drive, V8-powered Scion tC slide across your computer screen for the briefest of moments. And don't worry, we've used our considerable pull (read: none) to make sure Tanner mixes in some kick ass slow-mo shots when his Mulholland drift project hits the web next month.

There are some images that don't fit into Newton's laws of physics. In nature, flying pigs and twinkle-toed Grizzly Bears come to mind. On the track, we can't think of many things more odd-looking than a drifting Smart ForTwo. After all, it's about as tall as it is long, and it's awfully narrow, too. It's like drifting a postal truck... only smaller... and less agile... and more prone to flipping on its side.

That didn't stop one pioneering tuner from turning the ForTwo into the ultimate lunchbox drifter. The white Smart looks to be modded to the hilt with an overhauled powertrain ('Busa, anyone?), exhaust and larger wheels and tires. Those wheels are also pushed out by several inches as evidenced by the bulging wheel arches. Hit the jump to watch the video shot in Japan. The drifting of this one-of-a-kind Smart car won't make anyone think about Ken Block or Rhys Millen, but this little two seater can sure get around the track, spitting flames in the process.

Drifting isn't nearly as easy as it looks. It takes keen hand-eye coordination and an almost spiritual connection with one's vehicle. One payoff for drifting is that it looks really cool, especially when it's seen in a slow motion video.

A bunch of guys with access to some beautiful twisting roads and a few Big Wheels set out to see if drifting looks as cool with a toddler's bike as it does with a Hyundai Genesis Coupe. You know what? It doesn't, but it's still quite entertaining. Hit the jump to see it for yourself. We're pretty sure Rhys Millen shouldn't be worried about this new competition, but we would be surprised if any one of us didn't have an absolute ball trying this ourselves.

[Source: YouTube]
Continue reading VIDEO: Teaching the kids opposite lock - Big Wheel drifting

VIDEO: Teaching the kids opposite lock - Big Wheel drifting originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 May 2009 14:59:00 EST. Sam Hubinette doesn't have any such compunctions while sliding sideways at 90 miles per hour. Should he inadvertently hit the wall, whoops. Fretting over potential contact will likely only make it inevitable. The hairy-chested car guys over at 0-60 were hanging out at the third round of Formula Drift competition in Englishtown, NJ, and caught up with the Skidding Swede for a few minutes while shooting a larger video of the competition. The smoky event saw Hubinette's Viper place second to Tanner Foust's Nissan 350Z. Foust, you'll recall, is one of the hosts of NBC's domestic "Top Gear." Good to know he can drive. Now's your chance to take shots at drifting and complain about how it's not racing, and doesn't require any skill, though we assure you it is, and it does. You still don't have to like it. Video posted after the jump

Gallery: Formla D round 3

[Source: 0-60]
Continue reading VIDEO: Sam Hubinette in Formula D action

VIDEO: Sam Hubinette in Formula D action originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jun 2008 19:58:00 EST.
