As champions of both rear-wheel drive and the hand brake, we completely understand the compulsion to get sideways on occasion. Hell, there was a time when no vacant parking lot was safe from our hellion ways - but there's a difference between harming nothing but your own rear tires and putting an entire highway's worth of commuters in danger. That's exactly what a set of <strike>Orange County</strike> Oakland kids managed to do when they shut down what looks to be a six-lane interstate for the soul purpose of doing some donuts.

From what we can tell, there were a few Ford Mustang models, at least one Chevrolet Camaro and a few Nissan 240SX drivers in attendance, and while the act of spinning a car isn't necessarily dangerous in and of itself, asking traffic that was traveling at around 60 mph to come to a complete stop for your stupidity is the definition there of. Do us a favor, jokers: keep it off the street. Enjoy the shakiest of hand cams in the video below.
Continue reading Drifters shut down California highway while doing donuts

Drifters shut down California highway while doing donuts originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 29 Jan 2013 19:20:00 EST.
Ryan Tuerck has gone and put his own spin on the game of HORSE. Instead of shooting hoops, he and fellow Drift Alliance driver Chris Forsberg recently squared off in a series of drift challenges. Fail a challenge, get one letter of the word DRIFT. First person to spell the whole word loses. The challenges ranged from grazing a barrel with your car's tail end to attempting to spill the least amount of liquid while driving around a drift course. Body damage, foul language and hilarity ensue.

With both guys piloting Nissan 240SX drift cars, the field seems pretty even, but one competitor serves up a big steaming plate of domination over the other. We won't spoil the fun by telling you who comes away as the champion. You'll have to check out the clip below for yourself. Now, if you'll excuse us, we need to draw up some regulations for an automotive kick ball league.
Continue reading Ryan Tuerck introduces us to the Ultimate Game of Drift

Ryan Tuerck introduces us to the Ultimate Game of Drift originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 06 Dec 2012 20:03:00 EST.
Red Bull is one of those companies with its fingers in every corner of the sports world. It's easy to forget just how far those sponsorship dollars have spread since the brand's early days, but a clever new video showcasing some of the brightest stars of the Red Bull family is out to remind us there's nowhere the energy drink manufacturer won't advertise.

In what could very well be the world's oddest Rube Goldberg machine - Red Bull calls it a Kluge, which means a jury-rigged device or offbeat workaround - pro skaters Joey Brezinski and Ryan Sheckler, hurdler Lolo Jones, sky diver Sean MacCormac and motocross rider Robbie Maddison team up with one truck racer Bryce Menzies and Rhys Millen in his Hyundai Genesis Coupe drift car to free a can of Red Bull from a block of ice.

Excessive? Sure, but remember, this is the same company that put a man at the edge of space just so he could jump back down again. Other Red Bull-branded athletes make an appearance as well, including pro golfer Rickie Fowler and snowboarder Pat Moore. Check out the whole cast in the clip below.
Continue reading Red Bull Rube Goldberg machine uses Ram trophy truck, Hyundai Genesis

Red Bull Rube Goldberg machine uses Ram trophy truck, Hyundai Genesis originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Nov 2012 19:58:00 EST.
Some of the protagonists placed on the tiny battlefield of action sports cameras are the JVC Adixxion, Sony Action Cam, Ion Air Pro, Contour +2 and GoPro Hero3 HD. The first three are in their infancy, the Contour recently upgraded to next-gen status and the big-daddy Hero3 about to ship as a third generation, specs-busting model.

Also just refreshed is the $400 Drift HD Ghost, bettering the previous version by the addition of a new seven-element lens covered by Gorilla Glass 2 and built-in Wi-Fi that, with a coming DriftMobile app, lets you control the camera with your phone. Its two-way remote - that works from 30 feet away - has an LED that lets you know when the camera is recording, the illumination color-coded to indicate the mode: video, photo, time-lapse or photo burst. There's also a feature called Flashback, which captures footage to memory in five-minute chunks; if you hadn't hit record but want something the camera caught in the last five minutes, you can save the footage. It also has a built-in two-inch LCD screen and is waterproof to nine feet.

The Ghost will do 1080p, 960p, 720p and WVGA, the 1080p frame rates in either 25 or 30 fps, 720p going up to 60 fps. But specs without footage don't mean much, so you'll find some video samples below. Make sure you turn up the quality.
Continue reading Drift HD Ghost camera ready to bring the fight to GoPro [w/video]

Drift HD Ghost camera ready to bring the fight to GoPro [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Nov 2012 19:02:00 EST.
Whether you follow the sport of drifting or not, you have to admit that it has taken off. Seeing this popularity, Ford has just announced its sponsorship of Formula Drift as an official partner through the 2013 season.

Ford has already had involvement with the steadily growing sport, through its support of Team Falken Tire and drivers like two-time D1 Grand Prix champion Vaughn Gittin Jr. Ford says the move is part of an effort to reach an alternative buyer, aged 18 to 34, and interested in cars like the Fiesta, Focus, Mustang or F-150 SVT Raptor.

According to Formula Drift co-founder and vice president Ryan Sage, "Ever since Ford came into the series competitively in 2005, we have seen the power of what a factory-backed effort can do... Now we are even more excited to have them on as an official partner for the final event of the year and into 2013."

The final event to which Sage is referring is the "Title Fight," the finale of the 2013 season, recently held in Irwindale, CA. It is the home of the first sanctioned drifting event in 2003. Ford joined the sport in 2005, and had its first win at Irwindale with Gittin at the wheel in 2008. With factory works teams like Hyundai backing out, the increased commitment from Ford comes at at an important time for the sport.
A New Zealand man, for reasons only clear to himself, decides to attempt a Starsky & Hutch drift around a corner in a ute that can only kindly be described as vintage. With that opening, you're no doubt expecting the obligatory "of course it all goes wrong and he crashes."

And that, indeed, is what happens.

What he does next, though, is something straight out of a ridiculous Grand Theft Auto videogame scenario, and the payoff is terrific. See for yourselves in the video below.
Continue reading Kiwi ute drift goes all wrong, then all right

Kiwi ute drift goes all wrong, then all right originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 01 Jul 2012 20:01:00 EST.
We'll be honest: We miss drifting. Not the polished, sponsor-laden, energy-drink soaked Formula D. We miss the seedy internet shaky-hand cam videos of Japanese drivers slinging their hand-built machines up the mountain side in the middle of the night. Poland, of all places, has sought to marry the worlds of professional, sanctioned drifting with the thrill of taking on a public road. The pairing of a hill climb with drifting may seem odd, but trust us when we say it works. With fans lining the course and drivers all new to improvised track, anything can happen.

Disrespect the mountain, and you'll wind up on your roof. That didn't stop drivers from giving it all they had, however. Fortunately for those of us who aren't within a train ride of Eastern Europe, camera crews documented all the action for the world to see. Hit the jump to check out the high-definition video antics for yourself.
Continue reading Drifting returns to its mountain roots... in Poland

Drifting returns to its mountain roots... in Poland originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Feb 2012 15:14:00 EST.
There is likely no end to the amount of fun one can have with an empty parking lot, a few cones and a willing vehicle. Add two capable machines to the mix and the enjoyment increases exponentially. When those happen to be two Toyota GT86 coupes, all that's missing is the not-so judicious application of one's right foot. Two pro drift drivers recently got the chance to fling the GT86 around in a quick battle, and the result is a video that shows just how controllable the GT86 is right out of the box.

While we could think of a handful of other sports cars that are as capable right from the showroom floor, the list of those with price tags as slim as the GT86 and its Scion and Subaru brethren is considerably thinner. Hit the jump for a few lessons in car control.
Continue reading Pair of Toyota GT86s duel in parking lot drift battle

Pair of Toyota GT86s duel in parking lot drift battle originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Feb 2012 20:01:00 EST.
We've finally come to accept the fact that we'll never be Vaughn Gittin Jr. There can be only one one pure-bred drift hooligan of his caliber on this planet and truth be told, our sideways skills are paltry at best. That doesn't mean we can't pretend, though. Gittin Jr. has teamed up with a smattering of companies to give away five very limited-edition RC cars made up in the image of his sinister Ford Mustang GT drift machine. Only 5,000 of the HPI RC Ford Mustang cars will be produced in total, and Gittin Jr. is giving five of them away to Facebook fans.

To get the word out, Gittin Jr., K&N, Monster Energy and Falken Tire crafted a video demonstrating just what happens when the drifter can't get his hands on the scale Mustang. An epic chase ensues, with the RC car taking a little "How it's Made" tour of the K&N factory. The clip also features a few outtakes worth watching, as well. We won't spoil it for you, but we will say more than one RC car gave its life in the making of the film. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.
Probably the less said about this video, the better. According to the video uploader, the event takes place during the "Still Ballin' Car Club Nite Out" (yes, really), but we aren't sure if it's a proper race or just for show. Heck, we can't even figure out where the event took place.

At any rate, a pair of drivers are seriously going at it when what looks to be a 240SX pulling up the rear clips a corner and does some unintended tumbling. Thankfully, the Nissan driver was apparently alright.
At some point, drifting made the shift from counterculture revolution to the sponsor-laden vehicular equivalent of figure skating. We're not sure when it happened, but we certainly miss the days of watching grainy videos of mountain pass heroes piped over from Japan. The Bloodmasters crew seem to get where we're coming from. The guys just turned out a new video showing what happens when the crew gets together for a little fun at Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey. Let's just say there isn't a single booty-short wearing energy drink peddler or tube-chassis manufacturer vehicle in sight.

Instead, we're treated to some good old-fashioned fender bashing and tire shredding orchestrated under a mighty fine soundtrack. These guys are the kind of crazy that brought drifting across the Pacific in the first place, and from their ludicrous camera angles and similarly insane sideways antics, it looks like they're having considerably more fun than the Formula D crowd. We love that they don't seem to care how many dings and dents their Nissan 240SX coupes get, and they don't seem bothered by a few missing body panels, either. The whole film is well-shot, with portions looking downright Mad Max-like. Hit the jump to check it out.
Continue reading Nissan-wielding Bloodmasters wreak havoc on Raceway Park

Nissan-wielding Bloodmasters wreak havoc on Raceway Park originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Jan 2012 19:29:00 EST.
We all know sideways is slow. Kicking the tail out and sending the rear tires blazing may take a heaping helping of skill, but it won't win you any races. That doesn't make it any less awesome, however.

Icon has gone through the trouble of crafting yet another drift battle between motorcycle and car, and this time, two specially built Triumph Speed Triple bikes throw down against a 550-horsepower Ford Mustang Cobra piloted by a fictional officer of the law. The trio commence tearing through the rolling hills of mythical High Plains County before facing off.

Admittedly, the drift scene isn't typically our bag of tricks, but this is one of the more entertaining videos we've seen in a good while. Between the bark of the FoMoCo V8 and the wail of the big-bore Triumph Triples, there's enough audio glory on hand to keep us up at night. Throw in some excellent tunes and better videography, and you've got us hooked. Watch the video all the way through to the end for some hair-raising outtakes, including at least one roll over. Hit the jump to check it out.
Continue reading Motorcycle vs. Car Drift Battle 2 debuts, someone called the cops

Motorcycle vs. Car Drift Battle 2 debuts, someone called the cops originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 19:59:00 EST.
It looks as if Scion may be hard at work on a new turbocharged FR-S prototype. Motor Trend nabbed a quick video of what appears to be a forced-induction version of the coupe darting around Laguna Seca. With its tall wing and sideways antics, the vehicle is likely being put through its paces by the Scion drift team, which has had to rely on specially modified TC models until now. It makes sense for the drift team to strap a turbo onto the vehicle's 2.0-liter flat four for a little extra grunt, but it's unclear if a forced-induction version of the FR-S will make its way to production.

If a hotter version of the coupe is coming down the pike, we'll have to wait for it. The first production FR-S models won't show up until summer, and any variations would trail along after that. Either way, it appears we should be able to catch a glimpse of high-performance FR-S on the Formula D circuit in no time. Hit the jump to watch the quick video for yourself.
Continue reading Scion FR-S turbo spotted testing at Laguna Seca

Scion FR-S turbo spotted testing at Laguna Seca originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 03 Jan 2012 14:01:00 EST.
The 2012 BMW M5 is something of an anomaly. Despite its size and weight, the big luxury sedan is actually quicker than its less corpulent sibling, the BMW M3, around a road course. With a 552-horsepower twin-turbo V8 engine capable of sucking down small communities, there's no arguing the M5's power. But fast cars aren't necessarily fun. Take the Jaguar XKR, for example. It's blisteringly quick, but comes saddled with a traction control system that requires an advanced degree in computer science and a thorough comprehension of black magic to completely disengage. Roasting the tires in the big cat hardly seems worth it.

The M5 is no such beast. The goons at Autocar recently took the portly bruiser out for a little parking lot fun to see just how the machine performs once things get sideways. It would seem that the muscle-bound German is a willing dance partner. Hit the jump to watch the video for yourself.
Continue reading Autocar gets sideways in the 2012 BMW M5

Autocar gets sideways in the 2012 BMW M5 originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 01 Jan 2012 20:01:00 EST. Sounds like a great idea! And so we have the video after the break.

Sure, there's more than a bit of B-movie-spec scripting and acting talent. But, as Ken Block has proven time and again, all you need is a talented driver with a hot car plus plenty of tire smoke to make yourself some YouTube gold.
The Scion FR-S may not be big on power, but Toyota and Subaru engineers have delivered a lightweight, rear-drive coupe at what should be a palatable price point. That sounds like a recipe for track day fun if you ask us, or you can watch the post-jump video for visual evidence.

One drifter as he has his way with the FR-S on a track, and his camera was capturing the frames for proof. The unnamed cockpit commander seemed easily able to nose in and kick out the rump, often without the use of the parking brake. A light rain may have helped the drifts along a bit, but we're encouraged by what we see. Hit the jump for some entertaining sideways shenanigans.

We have to ponder what Ayrton Senna would think of the whole drift scene. Would the Formula 1 legend look down his nose at the phenomenon as the automotive equivalent of figure skating or embrace the sideways action for its all-or-nothing ethic? We ask because filmmaker Stephen Brooks has invoked the spirit of Senna in his latest clip covering the 2011 Maxxis British Drift Championship. Brooks has made a habit of crafting beautifully shot motorsports videos, but the addition of Ayrton's most famous quote strikes us as an odd choice.

To us, the Brazilian was speaking of direct competition between racers when he said, "You should know that by being a racing driver you are under risk all the time. And if you no longer go for a gap that exists, you are no longer a racing driver," not a driver putting on a show for a panel of judges.

Then again, racing is racing, and we're never ones to turn away from an excellent piece of motorsports videography. Hit the jump to check out the clip for yourself.
Continue reading Get artsy with the 2011 Maxxis British Drift Championship

Get artsy with the 2011 Maxxis British Drift Championship originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 Nov 2011 14:59:00 EST.
The BMW M5 has a long and rich performance history, and that resume only improves for 2012. With a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 pumping out 560 horsepower and an always-willing chassis underpinning it all, we can't wait to get behind the wheel.

Sadly we're a bit shy on the $92,000 needed to buy our own M5, so for now we'll settle for some stunning video and a melodious soundtrack. Hit the jump to hear the racy sounds emanating from the throaty M5, then stay for the sexy slow-motion drifts.
Continue reading Haven't heard the 2012 BMW M5 yet?
Nothing incinerates a perfectly good set of tires better than a drift car. And no drift car makes as much smoke as Kenneth Moen's turbocharged Toyota Supra. Yes, Ken Block turns out some great videos with high production values and plenty of tail-wagging craziness... but wait 'til you get a load of this.

Moen pointed his battle-scarred Supra in the general direction of 'up' at the Lysgårdsbakkene Ski Jumping Arena in Lillehammer, Norway, a facility you may recall from the 1994 Winter Olympics. Smoke-filled antics ensued, and it was all captured on video for your viewing pleasure.

If you fancy yourself a fan of drifting insanity, do yourself a favor and watch the video after the break.
Continue reading Kenneth Moen drifts a hillclimb with his bonkers Toyota Supra turbo

Kenneth Moen drifts a hillclimb with his bonkers Toyota Supra turbo originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 14 Oct 2011 14:57:00 EST.
If you like Ken Block's series of Gymkhana videos, then you'll definitely want to check out Vaughn Gittin Jr's latest flick featuring his Formula Drift Mustang. Gittin was recently visiting Saudi Arabia to perform a drifting demo at an event at the Al Reem Circuit, and he decided to stick around for an extra few days to get footage of him drifting on track. The result? Awesome.

Apparently, the track officials pretty much gave Gittin free reign of the entire complex, from the pit lane to the parking lots to the front straight, so the video shows him getting his Mustang sideways in a variety of locations. There's plenty of tire smoke, wonderful sounds from the naturally aspirated 5.4L V8, and even a few smashed rear fenders. Check the video out for yourself after the jump.
Continue reading Vaughn Gittin Jr. drifts his way through the Al Reem Circuit

Vaughn Gittin Jr. drifts his way through the Al Reem Circuit originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 19 Jul 2011 19:57:00 EST.
