Recently, we <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/19/choices-nissan-gt-r-or-ford-mustang-gt500/">ran a little poll</a> in which we asked which car would you prefer: A <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/gt+r">Nissan GT-R</a> or a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/06/first-drive-2010-ford-shelby-gt500-part-1-living-on-the-liv/">Ford Shelby Mustang GT500</a>? The results - which aren't too surprising - had just over two thirds of you rooting and tooting for Godzilla. And that's all fine. However, someone pointed out that the contest should have been between Godzilla and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/08/first-drive-2010-shelby-super-snake-as-good-as-a-ford-mustang-g/">new Shelby Super Snake</a>. Well guess what?<br />
<br />
Thankfully, <em>Motor Trend</em> has totally obliged you. In this video, the 412-horsepower and 393 pound-feet of torque (at the wheels, people, at the wheels) Nissan GT-R takes on the 635 hp and 581 lb-ft of torque Shelby GT500 Super Snake do the quarter-mile. The results? We're going to make you jump to find out, but we aren't surprised. At all. But then again, we've driven both cars (in fact, this appears to be the exact <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/27/review-2010-nissan-gt-r-does-godzilla-have-a-soul/">2010 GT-R we drove</a>). We will however say hats off to our buddy Ed Loh at MT for making such a fun video. We can't recall ever seeing another vehicle quite like this 1962 Dodge Dart, which was converted into a limo wagon that was supposedly intended for the Vatican and later sold to a Catholic Church in Kentucky - and that's probably for the best.<br /><br />As scary as the beast may be to look at, the team from Wicked Rides Inc. reports that it's actually a trouble-free driver thanks to the modern V10 engine yanked from a Dodge Ram and T56 six-speed manual transmission from a Viper it was blessed with when converted into The Nunrunner - reliable enough, in fact, to have taken part in the last Hot Rod Power Tour with nary a breakdown.<br /><br />Underneath the rusty outer shell sits a chassis that's been fortified with the K-frame and suspension bits from a 2004 Corvette Z06, though we doubt it handles anything like the pilfered sportscar from which those bits came. In one lane you've got the BMW M5, with ten petrol-powered cylinders. In the adjacent lane there's the Q7 V12 TDI, with twelve oil-burning cylinders. The M5 is much lighter. The Q7 has Quattro. And being England, of course it's wet. <em><em><br /></em></em>The Garage 419 team is anything but conventional, so when they say they're going to race a Nissan GT-R against a $500 competitor, you know it's going to be entertaining. Host Matt Farah had the easy task of rolling to the strip in the Godzilla of street racers, with 478 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and launch control at his beck and call. Editor Gene Sanchez had the tougher task of obtaining a $500 car to challenge his co-worker. Sanchez had a couple tricks up his sleeve, though, as he rented a $200-per-day LS3 Corvette from the Hertz Fun Collection and added a bargain-basement $300 nitrous system. Unfortunately, the 'Vette was burdened with lousy run-flat tires and a six-speed slush box, but at least the yellow underdog had the crowd on its side. <br />We first told you about <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/15/ford-to-launch-mustang-cobra-jet-factory-drag-racer-this-summer/">Ford's new Mustang Cobra Jet factory drag car in June of 2007</a> and last week Ford posted a video on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/03/video-ford-racing-tests-fr500cj-cobra-jet-mustang/">YouTube of a test session</a> with the new car showing its stuff at Milan DragWay. Now we've received some fresh high-res pics of the Cobra Jet in our inbox from Ford. Last we heard Ford is only building 50 of these drag race specials all of which are powered by a blown 5.4-liter 32-valve V8 based on the GT500 motor. This engine has been breathed on a little more heavily then the GT500 and the car looks like it's been stripped down. <p>With a name like Challenger, Dodge's new muscle car had better put down some serious quarter-mile times or else be able to propel itself into outer space. Fortunately, Chrysler's performance parts division Mopar is preparing to do one (if not the other) when it unveils its new Drag Race Package for the Challenger at the annual Mopar Mile-High Nationals at the Bandimere Speedway in Denver next week. </p>
<p>While specific details on the package - which we <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/01/exclusive-video-dodge-challenger-mopar-drag-package-cometh/">previewed in our exclusive video</a> last week - remain scarce before the official debut, the Challenger Drag Race Package marks the 70th anniversary of Mopar and forty years since the company's last factory-built drag-race package. Based on the Challenger SRT8, the Drag Race Package features a composite "Body-in-White" direct from the factory and a host of lightweight components, to say nothing of all the parts being deleted for drag-strip use. The engine has been repositioned and the wheelbase actually shortened to optimize weight distribution and driveline angle. Designed in cooperation with the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) and previewed back in 2006 by the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/10/30/chrysler-s-sema-surprise-392-hemi-dodge-challenger-super-stock/">392 HEMI Dodge Challenger Super Stock concept at SEMA</a> (pictured above), Mopar will build 100 examples of the race-prepped Challenger with three different engine packages available.</p>

Sure I was aware of all the usual suspects like Garlits, Prudhomme, Force and other famous names over the years. I knew about the kind of speeds they reached and I had a vague awareness of bracket racing and the need for consistency. But I figured "How hard can it be to go from a starting line and traverse 1320 feet in the shortest possible time?" Well, it turns out that it's a lot harder than you might think. If nothing else, I came away from this experience with with a vastly increased respect for successful drag racers. <br /><br />Let's start with a brief run down of the procedure. First up, before getting to the starting line you do a couple of burnouts to warm the tires in hope of getting some extra grip. On racing slicks this undoubtedly helps. Whether it actually helps with street tires is something about which we need to consult with some tire engineers. Once your tires are warm, you pull up to the line. This is where things start to get very complicated. <p>Driving a news van can be a real drag. Evidently so, as news crews from KDBC-TV and KVIA-TV in El Paso, Texas took it literally during their coverage of opening night at El Paso Motorplex. In response to the crowd's wishes, both overweight vans -- packing a full assortment of electronic equipment and sporting satellite dishes on the roof -- staged at the tree. Reaction times were slow as both lumbered off the line, sans wheelspin, and hobbled down the quarter-mile strip. Neither news station posted slips, but the driver from KDBC-TV was let go for his performance (one has to assume the only thing he broke were the station rules). Lucky for us, video cameras caught all of the action.</p>
<p>CNN's Anderson Cooper reported the event in the video after the jump with this cynical lead-in: "What were they thinking?" His follow-up crack of, "...seriously, the folks in the van should have known better..." was only topped by the comment from his female co-host who blurted out, "I didn't realize it was legal anywhere to drag race... shows you I don't get out much." Doh! Turns out they thought the media face-off was in pour taste because a person had died in that area the previous night in what may have been an illegal street-racing incident.<br /></p>
<p>It is, however, still legal to drag race on quarter- and eighth-mile tracks all over the country, and we think the impromptu event was a pretty cool publicity stunt for EP Motorplex. In fact, next time let's turn it up a notch with some big names going head-to-head for pinks. Are you listening CNN and FOX News? <em>Thanks for the tip, Nick!</em></p>

The bad news: he's a little busted up. John Force's dragster (yeah, that <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Force">John Force</a>, the one with the <a href="http://www.tv.com/driving-force/show/59988/summary.html">Driving Force</a> tv show about him and his hawt drag racing daughters) went out of control at the O'Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals in Texas on Sunday. In the process of heading for the wall, he also took out Kenny Bernstein's car before smacking the barrier. Berstein is fine, Force is also largely fine, suffering a broken wrist and ankle in the crash. As he was being stabilized and extricated from his car, Force was apparently more concerned with Bernstein's fate, even though he was obviously aware of his own injuries. Force's chassis broke, which seems to be what caused the collision. His daughter Ashley, also an NHRA drag racer, withdrew from the semifinals to be with her father at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX. While this isn't quite as amazing and hilarious as the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/08/08/the-incredible-flying-lawnmower/">flying lawnmower</a> they managed to dig up, it's still pretty wild. It's unbelievable how this thing sounds just like a top-fuel dragster with the volume turned down when the driver gets on it. We love the wild-cam idle, too. The most amazing thing of all is that it launches down the track and hits 70 miles per hour.
