Porsche's optional "Sport Chrono Package" adds a Sport button to the center console that kicks throttle, suspension and engine behavior up a few notches. It also adds a cool swivel-mounted timer to the center of the dashboard (essentially so your friends and passers-by know you have it) and launch control on PDK-equipped models. The upgraded "Sport Chrono Package Plus" adds a memory function to the system and the ability to display and review some of the lap data on the Porsche PCM (multi-function display).

The on-board PCM analysis only scratches the surface, says the team at Chronolyze. According to their engineers (no relation to Porsche AG), the Chrono Package Plus records vehicle speed, engine speed, transmission gear, steering angle, lateral g-forces, engine temperature, outside temperature, distance traveled, altitude and GPS coordinates (on NAV-equipped vehicles). That's a ton of information that is left sitting completely unused.

Since none of this data is available via the PCM, Chronolyze has developed software that extracts the text files (through Bluetooth or the iPod connection) so they may be further analyzed on a computer. The Chronolyze software organizes the data, calculates a 3D analysis of the laps (so they may be played back in real-time animations), and then graphs it all out for your viewing pleasure. In addition, the software also allows users to share telemetry, give ratings and overlay sessions from multiple files. If you've got a properly equipped Porsche in your driveway, give it a trial run. You can get your free beta account here.

Playstation3 gamers: If you were disappointed that only XBox 360 players got the Ferrari DLC package for Need for Speed SHIFT, take heart, because the next one's got your name on it, too. The Exotic Racing Series pack is being released by EA for both platforms (though not for PC, PSP or mobile platforms) on March 18, with some of the most alluring machinery this side of Maranello.

Included in the downloadable content package are the McLaren MP4-12C and SLR Stirling Moss, the Alfa 8C Competizione and Maserati GranTurismo S, BMW M1 Procar, Gumpert Apollo and Acura NSX. The DLC costs $10 (or equivalent points) on either XBox Live or PlayStation Network, and also includes an array of new events and track layouts.
What automaker isn't trying to cash in on the iCraze? Most are scrambling to include iPod and iPhone integration into their newest vehicles, and many have tried to mimic the look and feel of the Apple devices with their latest concepts. The "people's car" has as good a claim as any other automaker, and Volkswagen is looking to cement that with a new game for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Developed by German mobile game studio Fishlabs, the Volkswagen Polo Challenge, like other racing games, works with the devices' built-in accelerometer to control the car. Players can choose between eight different circuits to drive on while being serenaded by the music of Feinkost. When they're done playing, mobile gamers can find the nearest VW dealership to check out the car in person.

Just a month after its release, already 1.4 million people have downloaded the free game from iTunes. (Volkswagen's Spanish subsidiary has also released a similar game highlighting the Seat Ibiza Cupra.) If you can read German, you can check out more info in the press release after the jump, along with the images in the gallery below.
Continue reading People's Choice: 1.4m downloads for VW Polo Challenge iPhone game

People's Choice: 1.4m downloads for VW Polo Challenge iPhone game originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Apr 2009 08:01:00 EST. Hyundai is hoping to lure internet users with a banner ad that no doubt touts the free song. When clicked, the banner initiates a download, plays the song, and also pops up a 20-second commercial featuring the Elantra. You could also opt for the cellphone ringtone if you like the way music sounds over a 1/3" transducer. A second set of banners is going live as well, these to collect contact information on potential customers willingly fill out the form. A song by Secondhand Serenade is the prize for providing a free sales lead to the dealer organization.

Hyundai is angling to snag more of the 18-49 year old age group by running the banners at popular music sites like Pandora, Billboard, and Real Networks. Hey, a focused advertising effort is already better than the wide-net thing we all have to sit through on TV.

[Source: Brandweek]
Watch a Hyundai spot, get a free song originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Mar 2007 11:33:00 EST. The TV blog, trivialTV, stumbled upon a trademark filing by SPEED channel for Speed Garage. What is Speed Garage? The filing states it is for "downloadable television programs and audio visual content." That makes you want to stroke your billy goat beard, doesn't it? SPEED content on the web, and perhaps even FREE! We're champing at the bit to see what they have to offer.

They have speculated over at trivialTV that the Speed Garage site will be off the main SPEED TV site, somewhere near the Speed Store in the site navigation bar. If you can't wait for the Speed Garage free site, and perhaps you're not lucky enough to get the channel on satellite or cable, iTunes has some of SPEED's shows available for purchase. There are some videos on the site now, but we hope the new video site provides downloadable content as well as a more dynamic design.

Thanks for the tip, MikeV!

Turn-by-Turnworks by OnStar downloading a route's directions into the vehicle. Voice prompts are uttered where to go, turn, etc.,like a standard navigation system. TechnoRide used a Cadillac STS as their test vehicle.

The driver foundthe system worked. Voice prompts would notify when approaching a turn and which direction to go. But lack of visualcues, either maps or text, could make things confusing. And if the driver misunderstood the directions and had to turnaround, OnStar would notify them, for example, to turn 'south' and leave it to the driver to figure out where 'south'was.

General Motors, which owns OnStar, plans to roll out the Turn-by-Turn option for all its 2007 vehicles.Pricing has not been announced thought it's expected to match a similar feature available on cellphones.

[Source: TechnoRide]
Taking OnStar for a test drive originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Apr 2006 20:03:00 EST.
