As champions of both rear-wheel drive and the hand brake, we completely understand the compulsion to get sideways on occasion. Hell, there was a time when no vacant parking lot was safe from our hellion ways - but there's a difference between harming nothing but your own rear tires and putting an entire highway's worth of commuters in danger. That's exactly what a set of <strike>Orange County</strike> Oakland kids managed to do when they shut down what looks to be a six-lane interstate for the soul purpose of doing some donuts.

From what we can tell, there were a few Ford Mustang models, at least one Chevrolet Camaro and a few Nissan 240SX drivers in attendance, and while the act of spinning a car isn't necessarily dangerous in and of itself, asking traffic that was traveling at around 60 mph to come to a complete stop for your stupidity is the definition there of. Do us a favor, jokers: keep it off the street. Enjoy the shakiest of hand cams in the video below.
Continue reading Drifters shut down California highway while doing donuts

Drifters shut down California highway while doing donuts originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 29 Jan 2013 19:20:00 EST.
Ferrari is not an outfit that would miss out on the enormous opportunity presented by the Chinese market. Having won the grand prix there three times out of the first four it was held, the Prancing Horse marque launched a special-edition 599 there in 2009, followed by an even more exclusive porcelain-finish one-off.

For 2012, Ferrari created a special-edition 458 Italia to mark the year of the dragon, and to launch it, the local dealership in Nanjing rented out a section of the Great Wall. It's what they did with it, however, that has local authorities seeing red in more ways than one.

Apparently at some point during or after the demonstration, an employee of the dealership got behind the wheel of the limited-edition V8 supercar and pulled some smokey donuts. The problem is that the stunt left tire marks burnt into the ancient surface, leaving authorities understandably upset. What repercussions will ensue remains to be seen, but we certainly wouldn't want to be ticking off China's notoriously strict government.

Facebook is a big deal, even if you're an exotic car maker with one of the world's most powerful brands. In this case we're talking about Ferrari, which recently hit eight million followers on the social networking site.

How does an automaker with such a rich history celebrate a 21st century milestone? Scroll down to watch the good folks in Maranello, Italy throw down after gaining 8,000,000 followers. Hint: it involves a predictably red 458 Italia, plenty of open pavement and a knack for drifting and donuts. Of course, Ferrari would like us to believe that they wrote out "8,000,000" in rubber, but we're more interested in watching the 458 do its thing.
Continue reading Ferrari celebrates 8 million Facebook fans by taking 458 Italia for a spin

Ferrari celebrates 8 million Facebook fans by taking 458 Italia for a spin originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 May 2012 14:58:00 EST.
Ah, donuts - one of the automotive world's purest forms of hooliganism. We've all done 'em, simply because every once in a while, it's just plain fun to light up a car's back end and fling it around in a circle.

Fun as they may be, donuts aren't necessarily all that fun to watch. After all, one car spinning in circles certainly loses its charm after a while. But what about seventy cars spinning in smoke-filled circles? Now that's something.

Earlier this week, over 70 vehicles showed up at Infineon Raceway in order to break the Guinness World Record for the largest number of cars performing donuts successfully. Check out what ensued in the video after the break, complete with epic battle background music.
Continue reading Guinness Book of World Records spin-off shows it's time to make the donuts

Guinness Book of World Records spin-off shows it's time to make the donuts originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Mar 2012 20:01:00 EST. Guinness Book of World Records donuts attempt - Click above to view video after the jump

It's not clear from these videos who owns the world record for most simultaneous donuts, but it doesn't much matter. Both attempts were good for some sweet video of cruelty to tires. The first video shows a 2009 attempt in England, which set the record with a collection of 29 Skylines, Evos and a Caterham doing donuts simultaneously.

The second video chronicles an Australian attempt that appears to have shattered that record at 57. While the description for the Guinness Book of World Records video cites the Australian attempt as the new record, we can't find any other documentation to confirm it. Either way, the footage in both instances is incredible. Click past the jump to check out both videos.
Continue reading Brits and Australians make world-record donut flash mobs

Brits and Australians make world-record donut flash mobs originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 04 Jun 2011 20:03:00 EST. 1965 Pontiac GTO does donuts - Click above to watch the video after the break

We love ourselves some vintage muscle cars, and none more so than the one that started it all: the Pontiac GTO. It's 389-cubic-inch V8 engine burbling underhood, its paper-thin bias-ply tires at all four corners and its complete lack of any kind of safety equipment mean the old Goat is nothing if not a hoon's dream car.

But what does it have to do with boxers? Beats us. Whether you're talking about the kind you wear under your jeans (in this case from Camouflage) or the kind that licks you in the face, we're completely baffled as to why the donut-performing muscle car is being used to advertise boxers.

Oh well. The Pontiac GTO (1965 vintage, in this case) is always welcome on these pages, and boxer puppies are adorable. You'll find both of them in the video after the break. Enjoy! Thanks for the tip, Diland!
Continue reading 1965 Pontiac GTO does donuts, helps sell boxers [w/bonus boxer puppies]

1965 Pontiac GTO does donuts, helps sell boxers [w/bonus boxer puppies] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 May 2011 19:57:00 EST. Rhys Millen guides the Lexus LFA supercar around Rianne Ten Haken - Click above to watch video after the jump

Nissan may choose to use its Juke to square off with swimsuit-clad supermodels but Lexus takes a different route to interact with the pretty ladies... a circular one. Photographer Yu Tsai wanted a shot of a Lexus LFA performing a donut around model Rianne Ten Haken. He could've simply spent some time playing in Photoshop, but instead decided to capture the real thing.

Performing a perfect donut without bumping into the scanitly clad star of the photo shoot requires serious skill. Rhys Millen, son of Rod and nephew of Steve, lends his talented hands and feet so this stunt goes off without a hitch. You can tell that Millen has serious skills because they say a car will follow your eyes... and somehow Rhys was able to avert his gaze from Ten Haken. You, on the other hand, can stare wherever you like when you watch the clip posted after the jump.

Of course, we should also mention you can view the super-sized version of the pic above right here. Do the right thing.

Lucky Lexus owners across the globe are eager to receive their new LFA supercars. Javier Quirós of Costa Rica is one such person, and decided to celebrate the delivery of his red LFA in a manner befitting such a vehicle... by doing a few donuts.

Don't worry about Javier losing control of the 552-horsepower, 10-cylinder two-door. Quirós is a race driver with Gazoo Racing and president of Purdy Motor, the Costa Rican distributor for Toyota products. Javier has competed around the globe at tracks like Daytona and the Nürburgring.

You can't see it in the video but we imagine Mr. Quirós' smile is wider than the grille on the front of his new LFA. This is LFA #0014, which Quirós specially requested from Akio Toyoda because 14 is his usual racing number. Click past the jump for the clip.

To some, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is a demure looking beast, but don't let the classy lines fool you. Beneath that long, elegant nose is a 6.2-liter, 563 horsepower AMG V8 that propels the top Benz to supercar status. But while the SLS can hold its own on the race track against some of the world's finest automobiles, it also has the punch to take on low-brow muscle cars at their own game.

While the folks at Car and Driver no doubt have the resources to hit the track, they instead opted to take the SLS AMG out for some donuts. We're not talking polite, single turn donuts, either. This is the kind of donut that leads to a fast trip to the tire store for some very expensive Continental ContiSportContact rubber. And just for kicks (and visual flair), the C/D gang has left its gullwing doors ajar for maximum tire smoke inhalation. Hit the jump to watch the tire-shredding action for yourself.

You know what's wrong with kids today? We don't either, but one thing we're sure of is that they just don't read enough P.J. O'Rourke. True, Republicanism has fallen totally out of favor among today's youngsters, but that stuff is cyclical. Like when Nixon swept into the 80th Congress -- the GOP was all the rage then. And the Newt Gingrich led 104th Congress was pretty popular for a few minutes back in the Lewinkski-charged Nineties.

Anyhow, O'Rourke is a great Republican. Our favorite, in fact. You all should sit down and read P.J. to your children as bedtime stories. Might we suggest a passage from his 1978 classic, "How to Drive Fast On Drugs While Getting Your Wing-Wang Squeezed and Not Spill Your Drink." Here's a taste:

Even more important than being drunk, however, is having the right car. You have to get a car that handles really well. This is extremely important, and there's a lot of debate on this subject - about what kind of car handles best. Some say a front-engined car; some say a rear-engined car. I say a rented car. Nothing handles better than a rented car. You can go faster, turn corners sharper, and put the transmission into reverse while going forward at a higher rate of speed in a rented car than in any other kind. You can also park without looking, and can use the trunk as an ice chest. Another thing about a rented car is that it's an all-terrain vehicle. Mud, snow, water, woods - you can take a rented car anywhere. True, you can't always get it back - but that's not your problem, is it?

See? As for why we dug this old chestnut up, may we suggest you make the jump and watch the video? P.J. would be so proud.
They will make it positively rain police on you. Frank Alvarado found this out the hard way when he stole a donut van from a Donut Delite driver on his rounds, and ended up on a five-and-a-half-hour run from the law.

Alvarado stole the van from Rock Island Hospital in Illinois, and then took off into Iowa, getting to Tama County before he was spotted. Before he could say "Sprinkles!", the donut thief was being pursued by five Tama County sheriff's deputies, plus four more officers from three other police agencies. And get this: one of those other officers came in his personal vehicle. As we said, you don' t mess with the donuts in Tama County. Their reward for catching this criminal: all the donuts in the van.

Actually, we really want to get Mr. Alvarado's side of the story in this, because who steals a donut (!) truck and then hauls tail hundreds of miles west? Sounds like a Cannonball Run... or something... But we feel like Franky "The Donuts" Alvarado is the key to a story even better than this one. Thanks for the tip, Alberto!

[Source: WCF Courier]
Stolen donut van chased by cops, LOTS of cops originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 26 Mar 2008 16:22:00 EST.
One might associate a Bentley with, say...caviar and filet mignon. But donuts? Heavens, no! Well, this is what happens when the nouveau riche get their hands on the motor carriages that rightfully belong to the aristocracy.

Seriously though, as posh as it is, and as much heritage as its Winged-B badge might confer, the Bentley Arnage is, after all, just a big old sedan with a monster V8 pumping out torque by the ton through the rear wheels. So here's a bunch of guys who saw through the clout, put 1 and 2 together, and decided to take their big, six-figure limo to the local parking lot for some good old fashioned donuts. There's something refreshingly brutal about that.

Video after the jump.
