On Thursday night's Autoline After Hours, SRT boss Ralph Gilles sat down with show hosts John McElroy and Peter DeLorenzo, along with Autoblog and AOL Autos staffers to talk all things Viper. Among the interesting tidbits disclosed about the 640-horsepower supercar are plans for a new dealer certification process designed to encourage the sort of purchasing, service and ownership experience that buyers of six-digit cars have come to expect.

According to Gilles:

"It's going to be a qualified dealer situation... The ones who do the dealer training in terms of the tech. I want a tech. I want a display car. I want all these things. There's going to be a list. It's not going to be impossible, it's just that someone has to put in the extra effort and say 'I'm an SRT dealer.'"

Off the air, Gilles told Autoblog that Chrysler officials have already approached a number of dealers with a strong record of Viper and SRT sales to discuss how the certification process will work, gaining valuable feedback in the process. A document outlining the new certification program will go out to Dodge dealers next month.

Chrysler has yet to announce official pricing and the Viper won't go on sale until sometime in the fourth quarter of the year, but that hasn't stopped a queue of customer deposits from piling up. According to Gilles, one particularly strong Viper dealer already has around 90 such deposits in-hand. Considering that Viper sales averaged about 1,600 units in past years, that's a substantial figure.

In other news, Chrysler officials have been making a big point of talking about the 2013 Viper's newfound refinements, from reduced NVH to nicer interior materials and improved drivability thanks to the institution of technologies like stability control and traction control. Gilles says that great care has been taken to ensure the model's core personality still shines through, but given that much of the Viper's mystique is centered on its raw, leg-burning, hairy-knuckled persona, we couldn't help but wonder aloud if the new model's refinements have left room for a stripped-out hardcore version for Viper purists and racers. With raised eyebrows, arms gesturing wildly and stifling a smile, Gilles wryly said: "I love how you think. Next subject!"

We've already seen the production-ready 2013 SRT Viper. In fact, we named it Best In Show after it officially debuted at the 2012 New York Auto Show earlier this month. But what we haven't seen is the full color palette that will be offered, and our spy photographers recently caught a Viper prototype out testing sporting a fresh coat of yellow paint, as well as some new, more sedate wheels.

As for that color, we aren't sure how we feel about it just yet, granted, we'll want to see it in person and without all of the hastily bolted-together panel gaps of this prototype. Moreover, we'd like to see how the new SRT looks in a proper GTS white/blue paint job. Be sure to let us know what you think of the new yellow paint in the comments.

The don't-call-it-a-Dodge Viper officially launches this year, boasting 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque from its monstrous 8.4-liter V10. We're eagerly awaiting our first stint behind the wheel, but for now, this new batch of high-res photos will have to suffice.
2013 SRT Viper looking fly in yellow? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 16:56:00 EST.
If you were confused when we chose the 2013 SRT Viper GTS-R ALMS race car as the second-best debut (behind the 2013 SRT Viper production car itself) at the 2012 New York Auto Show, then maybe you're not familiar with the Viper's racing pedigree. Fortunately, the American Le Mans Series has produced this excellent mini documentary that helps explain why the Viper's return to racing is a very big deal.

While the Viper had been racing in various series both domestic and international before entering the inaugural season of ALMS in 1999, it began a streak in this fledgeling North American motorsport that was, in a word, dominant. During the 1999 season, Team Oreca won six ALMS races in a row in the GTS class with their Viper GTS-R racecar. The only reason the team didn't sweep the eight-race season is because they missed the first two races. Team Oreca and the original Viper GTS-R came close to sweeping the 2000 season, though, winning eight of ten races, only falling twice to their arch rivals from Corvette Racing. Their winning streak spanned two seasons and 12 consecutive races. They also won their class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

Unfortunately, factory support for the program ended in 2001 and the Viper's dominance quickly evaporated as private teams could not match Team Oreca's OEM-backed success. Still, under the wing of Team Oreca and backed by Dodge, the Viper GTS-R amassed an impressive record of 16 race wins in 18 starts. And that's why the car's return to ALMS' GT class is a very big deal. Check out the video after the jump.
Continue reading Watch this mini-documentary about Viper's domination of early ALMS

Watch this mini-documentary about Viper's domination of early ALMS originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Apr 2012 16:57:00 EST.
Arguably the biggest news of the New York Auto Show for enthusiasts is the debut of the new SRT Viper. But as the high-performance arm of Chrysler has pointed out, the street-legal Viper "isn't the only high-performance snake making a triumphant return" here at Javitz.

No, Auburn Hills hasn't missed a beat in releasing the new super-musclecar's racing counterpart, the SRT Viper GTS-R, alongside the production version. Picking up where previous competition-spec Vipers left off - including three successive GTS class one-two victories at Le Mans, a landmark win in the Rolex 24 at Daytona and numerous international GT championships - the new Viper GTS-R is gearing up to take on the American Le Mans Series already this year.

Two of these bad boys will be fielded in ALMS, driven by Indy race winner Ryan Hunter-Reay, German driver and Rolex 24 veteran Dominik Farnbacher, Le Mans vet Marc Goossens of Belgium and Viper racer Kuno Wittmer of the great racing town of Montreal. But before these guys get to turn a wheel in anger, their new ride is on show here in New York, and we've got the gallery of high-resolution photos for your viewing pleasure.
The wait is finally over. Dodge... excuse us, SRT has officially pulled the wraps off the 2013 Viper, and it's everything we were hoping it would be. Let's discuss numbers: 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque from a front/mid-mounted 8.4-liter V10 and the best power-to-weight ratio of any Viper ever built.

In fact, the 2013 SRT Viper's 4.9 pounds per horsepower puts it just behind the Bugatti Veyron and Ferrari F12 and ahead of such performance stalwarts as the Lamborghini Aventador and Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. What's more, this engine has no turbocharger or supercharger, and those 600 lb-ft make this V10 the most torque-rich naturally aspirated production engine in the world.

Two models will be available, the standard high-performance SRT and GTS. The SRT is meant to "offer a perfect blend of extreme performance and a deliberate preservation of what has become the iconic DNA of the Viper," says Ralph Gilles, President and CEO of the Street and Racing Technology Brand and Motorsports. Buyers looking for a little more technology can opt for the GTS, which adds such niceties as a two-mode active suspension and interior creature comforts not normally associated with the Viper.

The 2013 Viper isn't just about power, either. Chassis updates are plentiful and include a beautiful X-brace up front that helps the new platform boast a 50-percent increase in rigidity over the last Viper. To help the driver maintain control, the 2013 Viper is fitted with stability and traction control (both fully defeatable, says Gilles) along with Pirelli P Zero Z-rated tires that were designed specifically for the Viper in massive 355 sizes in back and 295 up front. Three different wheels will be available, with five or six spokes in polished, matte black or gloss black finishes, along with a special lightweight set as part of the SRT Track Package.

Inside, the Viper is more luxurious than ever before, with seats from Sabelt (the same supplier used by Ferrari) and a seven-inch LCD screen directly in front of the driver that's configurable with a whole slew of custom operations. Chrysler's stellar 8.4-inch Uconnect Media Center is also included, as is a Harmon Kardon sound system. Oh, and for the first time ever, cruise control is standard.

Though first and foremost a street car, SRT fully intends to establish the 2013 Viper's racing credentials early and often. Viper will return to the American Le Mans Series in 2012, fielding a two-car team driven by Dominik Farnbacher, Marc Goossens, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Kuno Wittmer. And gaming fans aren't left out, either - SRT has worked with the Forza Motorsport 4 crew to make sure the 2013 SRT Viper is available soon as DLC.

Chrysler will be showing the all-new 2013 SRT Viper at the New York Auto Show on Wednesday, in what will undoubtedly be one of the biggest reveals of the show. While we've already seen spy shots, teasers, renderings, Hot Wheels cars, and unfinished parts from the forthcoming Viper, this new teaser is our best official look yet.

Too bad then, that it's not so good - just a blurry, poorly lit image that seems like it's more Photoshop than photo. So we went ahead and tried to enhance the image we plucked off of SRT's Facebook page ourselves. If there's one thing we can see for certain from these pixels, it's that the new hood design - with two front-mounted, rear-facing scoops - is confirmed.

While we eagerly await the rest of the picture, the good news is that there's just two more days to go.

Instead of letting everyone else leak shots and scale models of the 2013 Viper, SRT has gone insider trading and released its own teaser shot of the upcoming snake's interior. What we can see of the overall layout appears familiar from the second-generation car, but the materials look to have been significantly upgraded: ornately bezeled vents, soft-touch trim, cross-stitching and aggressive two-tone accents.

There's been some bother about the evolutionary exterior design of the 2013 Viper, but for a car that had just two generations in 20 years, it can still stand up to anything from Italy for badass presence. What it really needed was an interior and chassis that could deliver on its looks, and it appears the new 2013 model will be getting just that.

We'll continue to wait on its official appearance at the New York Auto Show next week to judge, but based on this shot, we like the look of where things are headed. Click on the photo above for a high-res version and stay tuned for the full debut live from New York next week.
SRT teases 2013 Viper interior on Facebook originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 30 Mar 2012 09:58:00 EST.
There seems to be an endless stream of spy shots scrolling across out digital desktops here at Autoblog, and some will invariably be more interesting than others. But few are as hotly anticipated as the new Viper that's coming roaring around the corner.

So far, all Chrysler has given us is a shadowy sketch, a close-up detail shot, and the new badge that will represent the model, joining the test mule spy shots we've been seeing for the past several months and the Hot Wheels leak we brought you yesterday. But this latest batch of spy shots appears the clearest yet - despite the best efforts of the SRT development team (including a Dukes of Hazzard-style hood slide that compelled KGP Photography to do a quick bit of wry image manipulation).

So what can we see from these pics? Ventilation, and lots of it. There is a pair of massive hood vents that pass air through the grille over the hood like you'd expect to see on a Le Mans race car. And through the mesh on Dolly Parton-size hood bra you can see a pair of uprights in the grille forming a V shape that's a slight departure from the crosshair grille of the previous Vipers. (Remember, this is technically an SRT product and - like the Ram trucks - no longer a Dodge.)

We're also seeing the clearest shots yet of the interior, with what looks like a full digital dashboard (complete with 220 mph speedo) instead of analog instruments. With each passing day, we hope to see a little more, but for now you can check out the full batch of spy shots in the gallery for a closer look.
2013 SRT Viper is starting to vent originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Feb 2012 12:29:00 EST.
As is the way these days, Chrysler has begun an achingly slow striptease for the 2013 SRT Viper, with zoomed-in closeups and shadowy shots that are difficult to glean much from. But just as they did during your childhood, Hot Wheels may have a quicker way for you to get your hands on the Pentastar's super coupe. The hyper-pixelated image shown above appears to be the 2013 Viper wrought in diecast 1/43 scale. Reportedly from a poster showing the toymaker's 2012 line of vehicles, this could just be our best look at the big snake yet.

While the wheels appear to be exaggerated in typical Hot Wheels fashion, the greenhouse and the long hood all seem to fit what we would expect for a new Viper, including an aggressive hood that appears to have at least three vents. The gaping lower fascia and headlamps look to be new forms as well, and if we squint a little, the roof looks like it could be a double-bubble. If this image is correct, it would seem to be clear that Chrysler has not forgotten about the car's heritage. Will it be modern enough while retaining the Viper's stock-in-trade rawness? We hope to know more soon.
Are you the 2013 SRT Viper? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Feb 2012 21:44:00 EST. When Chrysler showed off the new SRT Viper logo earlier this week, something struck us as odd. It looked familiar. A little too familiar. And not just in the Cobra Command way.

It took until this morning and a tip from our friend John to make the connection. Look at the new Viper logo, then look at the Flying Lizard Motorsports on the right. Coincidence? Surely. But still, there's got to be more than one way to draw a nice asp...
That new SRT Viper logo looks awfully familiar... originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Feb 2012 11:31:00 EST.
Chrysler made a huge splash when it put the Viper into production way back in 1992. But over the course of some eighteen years and 22,000 units of production, we all became used to the idea of having the Viper around. Then it was discontinued about a year and a half ago, and we started missing America's gnarliest of sports cars.

Fortunately the Viper is coming back, and coming back to the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant. The factory had been home to Viper assembly since it was moved there in 1995, but has laid dormant since July 2010. Now that the next-generation Viper is coming 'round the mountain, Chrysler is re-opening Conner Avenue to the tune of some 150 jobs. The re-opening of the facility makes Chrysler, in its own words, the only automaker with multiple assembly plants in Detroit proper.

Intriguingly, the press release after the jump refers to the upcoming new Viper not as a Dodge, but rather as an SRT product. The performance division was recently spun off by Chrysler into its own unit (much like the Ram truck brand was separated from Dodge), with Chrysler's chief designer and former Dodge chief Ralph Gilles at its helm, and the language seems to indicate that the new Viper could be the brand's first product. Color us officially excited.
Continue reading Chrysler confirms next-gen SRT Viper for Conner Avenue assembly

Chrysler confirms next-gen SRT Viper for Conner Avenue assembly originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Dec 2011 13:58:00 EST.
It may be another year or two before the next-generation Dodge Viper comes rumbling in, all 8.7 liters of it. But even though there is no Viper currently on offer, that doesn't mean there isn't some V10 power to be had. If you're a drag racer, anyway.

The Chrysler Group's performance catalog division Mopar has just announced the availability of a V10 crate engine designed for drag racers, and the figures are positively mind-blowing. The Competition crate engine - hand-built and ordered up as Part Number P5144872 - offers a staggering 800 horsepower and 695 lb-ft of torque. Mind you, that's coming out of 512 cubic inches (8.4 liters) of displacement, which is staggering in and of itself, but amounts to 95 horsepower per liter. Which is a lot, but not by racing standards.

Those who enjoy their ten cylinders of power away from the drag strip can opt for a 150-horsepower upgrade kit for the MkIII Viper that takes output up to 650 hp. There's also a new high-output, aluminum-block 426 Hemi V8 available with 590 horsepower, an adapter kit that allows the Hemi to drive the front wheels(!) and a Challenger body-in-white for race teams. Check out the full details in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Mopar announces 800-hp V10 crate engine at SEMA

Mopar announces 800-hp V10 crate engine at SEMA originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 01 Nov 2011 11:30:00 EST.
Word has it that Chrysler may be planning an increase in displacement for the 2013 Dodge Viper. According to the Dodge-obsessed crew at Allpar, the vehicle's V10 engine may jump from 8.4 liters to 8.7, making it the largest lump Chrysler has ever placed in a passenger car. Allpar doesn't say exactly where the report originates from, though upping the vehicle's displacement certainly fits the brash character of the Viper. We have to wonder what sort of tricks the company will employ to keep fuel consumption and emissions at reasonable levels, however.

The same report also repeats the fact that the vehicle will be manufactured in 2012 as 2013 model. That certainly runs contrary to those whispers we heard about the 2013 Viper receiving a clandestine unveil at a Florida charity event.
Next-gen Viper may get 8.7-liter V10 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 27 Oct 2011 14:29:00 EST.
Here's an odd rumor floating around the cyberether: Despite the fact that Dodge has previously said that the next-generation Viper won't arrive until late 2012 as a 2013 model, reports are surfacing indicating that the automaker may display the vehicle at a charity event in Miami next month. According to Top Speed, Dodge will pay a visit to Ride and Smiles at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The charity allows children who suffer from chronic illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, Crohn's disease and Colitis to ride along with current NASCAR drivers around the 2.3-mile road course in some of the hottest cars on the market right now.

Top Speed reports that one of the vehicles in attendance will be the next-generation Viper, though no source has been given for that information.

Far be it from us to rain on that parade, but a small charity event in Florida seems like an unlikely spot to unveil the new face of the Dodge halo car. Perhaps they'll show a teaser image or a mule? Earlier reports have indicated that the 2013 Viper would first be seen at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, which would seem to be a more fitting venue.
When Dodge first made waves about the company's Viper ACR whipping around the Nürburgring in 7:12, the world immediately began clamoring to see video of the lap in action. Well, clamor no more. SRT has officially released a video of the mighty Mopar doing the deed around the infamous German track. As you may recall, Tomball Dodge in Texas provided a set of brand-new 2010 Viper ACR models just for the task, as the Viper has been discontinued, and the trio was prepared for Nürburgring duty by the minds at Mintgen Motorsports.

With driver Dominik Farnbacher behind the wheel, team SRT was able to see the Viper around one of the world's most challenging road courses in blistering time, beating out the unofficial record set by the Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition by nearly two seconds. Farnbacher knows his way around a race car thanks to his extensive experience in the American Le Mans Series, Rolex Grand Am Series and the European Le Mans Series, among others. Hit the jump to check out the video.
Continue reading Dodge releases official video of Viper ACR reclaiming 'Ring title

Dodge releases official video of Viper ACR reclaiming 'Ring title originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Sep 2011 12:28:00 EST.
As you may already be aware, there is no official production car record at the Nürburgring. That hasn't stopped well-meaning automakers from warming up the great German marketing machine in an attempt to outdo previous marks set by their competitors, and that includes the fine folks at Dodge.

Way back in 2008, Dodge shipped one of its Viper ACR coupes to the 'Ring with the goal of setting a blistering time. Suffice it to say, the outing was a complete success. For quite some time, Dodge claimed with a time of 7:22.1 that it held the fastest lap time of any production car around the famous circuit.

Since then, a number of manufacturers and machines have bested that still-stellar time, notably the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (7:19.63) and more recently the Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition (7:14). Now, according to a new forum post by Viper Club of America president Marv Spatz, Dodge Viper owners can cheer the return of the crown, because a Viper ACR has reportedly just reclaimed the title with an unofficial time of "7:12 and change."

Keen enthusiasts will note that the Dodge Viper is no longer in production, so SRT sourced a pair of brand-new 2010 models from Tomball Dodge of Texas before having them prepped for action by Mintgen Motorsports, a shop just down the road from the Nordschleife.

No word yet on who was behind the wheel or how many shots at the record they took, but we have a feeling that once the results are certified, all that information will be released in a hail of press releases, in-car videos and so on. For now, check out our exclusive gallery of the two Vipers making their attempts.

While Keith and Janel Tanner took Friday to hash out setting the odometer on the Targa Miata, Brandon Fitch and I continued on with our education with the Open Road Motorsports Targa School in our trusty Supercharged NC. The day's instruction orbited around two simulated stages on Bell Island just a short ferry ride from St. John's. With our notes prepped, our own Terratrip rally computer properly calibrated, and a closed course through the winding roads of the island ahead of us, we were understandably enthusiastic about putting our freshly-gleaned skills to use.

We arrived early, took the first spot in the queue just ahead of a vicious-sounding Ferrari Enzo and waited for the stage lights to go green. When the time came, Fitch dropped the hammer and I immediately began rattling off instructions.

It's one thing to quietly anticipate the arrival of something exciting. It's quite another when you can actually see it coming, so here's a batch of spy shots showing the next-generation Dodge Viper under development.

Don't get too excited, though, because there's little to see from this early test mule. It's largely wearing the bodywork from the last Viper, and what's new is heavily disguised. What we can tell is that the headlights stretch back farther over the hood than the previous model, above the updated crosshair grille now in use across the Dodge model range. The placement of the air scoops and hood louvers appear different, and from what we can see at least, the front end seems to be more refined than its brutish predecessors.

Of course, it's what's behind that new front end that counts. It may be too early to say if the V10 will return of whether regulatory restrictions will force Chrysler to go with something slightly more "responsible," but you can bet it'll have more electronic nannies in place, and if the rapidly-integrating Fiat/Chrysler empire plays its cards right, Dodge's Italian sisters could bring some experience to bear. And that can't be a bad thing.
Next-gen Dodge Viper mule caught wearing new front end originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 14 Aug 2011 11:58:00 EST.
Mending a rift in motor racing is good for everybody. It was good for American open-wheel racing when the Champ Car and IndyCar Series put aside their differences to rejoin forces. And it will be good for sports car racing now that the FIA and the ACO are in the same corner.

Just as Indy is set to grow with new manufacturers participating, so is it expected of the new FIA World Endurance Championship. Toyota is one of the major automakers reportedly working on a new LMP1 program, and now reports indicate that the Chrysler Group could be preparing to rejoin endurance racing with a competition version of the upcoming next-generation Viper.

As you may recall, the original Viper bred the GTS-R that claimed overall wins in the Nürburgring 24 Hours and Rolex 24 at Daytona. It also scored back-to-back class wins at Le Mans in 1998, '99 and 2000, Sebring in 2000 and numerous others, including several titles in the FIA GT Championship and American Le Mans Series.

In bringing the next Viper back into the fold, Chrysler would look to challenge the likes of the Chevrolet Corvette C6.R, BMW M3 GT2 and Ferrari 458 GTC in the GTE category. That last bit would be particularly interesting, as the two companies are now corporate cousins under the Fiat umbrella.

The automaker has reportedly brought Riley Technologies, the chassis manufacturer behind eight years running of Grand Am champions, to evaluate the new Viper for competition potential. We'll be watching to see how this development unfolds.
Chrysler to take next-gen Viper back to Le Mans? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 29 Jun 2011 13:32:00 EST.
Over the years, Chrysler has built some awesome cars, and some... less than awesome. In one corner sits the Dodge Viper, that V10-powered beast of a car that arguably more aptly demonstrated the blue blood running through Auburn Hills' veins more than anything else in the company's history. In the other, the rather unfortunate Chrysler PT Cruiser, a retro hatch that may have demonstrated some originality when it first came out, but by its demise had long since outworn whatever charm it may have had in the first place.

The solution? Why, a marriage of the two, of course! One of only two reportedly built, this PT Cruiser featured some rather extensive modifications. For one, it did away with the rear doors and hatch back in favor of an enclosed pickup bed to give it a similar profile to the Chevrolet SSR. But as you might have guessed, that wasn't the end of it. Not by a longshot.

The builders also replaced the PT's four-banger with a V10 engine from a Dodge Viper. Now, the 500-horsepower 8.3-liter engine didn't come along until the 2003MY Viper, but given that this vehicle was said to have been built in 2000, we'll have to assume it's the original 8.0 tuned up a little. Although the notion that it was built more recently - say, after 2005 when the PT Cruiser convertible was introduced - seems a distinct possibility.

Along with the engine, the builders also transplanted the Viper's six-speed gearbox, rear suspension, steering rack and more. It's up for grabs now on eBay Motors, with bids standing - reserve unmet - at $12,322 as we went to press.
eBay Find of the Day: Chrysler PT Cruiser RT/10 pickup originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 Jun 2011 19:25:00 EST.
