The Environmental Protection Agency hasn't released its evaluation data for the 2013 Dodge Dart just yet, but Chrysler says the compact should be capable of returning some impressive fuel economy figures, particularly with an available Aero package. When equipped with the turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine and a manual transmission, the standard Dart is good for an estimated 27 mpg city and 39 mpg highway, thanks in part to active aero shutters nestled in the grille of every model. Should buyers require a few extra miles per gallon, an optional Aero package will see the highway figure jump to 41 mpg. So far, there's no word on city or combined fuel economy for the package, but there's time before the trim becomes available, as it won't be in dealerships until the third quarter of this year.

Chrysler isn't mentioning how much the Aero package will add to the bottom line or what other tweaks consumers will get for their coin. We do know that with 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, the Dart Aero should be considerably more engaging to drive than the Chevrolet Cruze Eco. While that model is good for 42 mpg highway when equipped with a six-speed manual, it does the deed with 22 fewer horsepower and 36 fewer pound-feet of torque. Hit the jump for the complete Dart press release.
Continue reading Dodge Dart will hit 41 MPG with available Aero Package

Dodge Dart will hit 41 MPG with available Aero Package originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 30 Apr 2012 15:30:00 EST.

Chrysler has managed an impressive turnaround since the dark days of 2009. After carpet-bombing the market with a spate of new or refreshed models, the automaker saw its retail sales jump a whopping 43 percent in 2011, helping it report a modest $183 million profit in the process. Chrysler even managed to pay out profit-sharing checks for the first time since 2005. According to Richard Cox, director of the Dodge brand, that trend hasn't slacked up in 2012. Year-to-date sales are up in the neighborhood of 40 percent.

But those gains were made largely by fluffing the pillows on old platforms. New engines, new interiors and reworked sheetmetal aside, we've yet to see what "the new Chrysler" can pull off with a completely fresh model. At least, that was the case.

Behold the 2013 Dodge Dart: the first serious small-car effort from the automaker since the Neon rolled off into the sunset in 2005. As the first completely new machine from Chrysler since the automaker's bankruptcy and subsequent takeover by Fiat, there's plenty riding on the new compact.

While technically based on the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, American engineers have drawn and quartered the chassis while also reworking the suspension to suit domestic tastes. With eye-catching styling, an à la carte option system and a range of fuel-efficient and powerful engines, the 2013 Dart isn't just a step forward for Dodge, it might just be a step forward for the compact class.
Continue reading 2013 Dodge Dart [w/video]

2013 Dodge Dart [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 30 Apr 2012 11:57:00 EST.
The alliance between the Chrysler Group and Fiat SpA has been a two-way street: Auburn Hills has given Lancia a new lease on life, for example, while Alfa Romeo has given Dodge the underpinnings for the new Dart. And now Dodge can return the favor in the form of the vehicle you see here.

Called the Viaggio, it's essentially a Fiat-badged Dodge Dart with a few minor tweaks here and there. But don't expect a shipment of Fiat badges to be arriving at the assembly plant in Belvedere, Illinois, anytime soon: what you're seeing here is actually the first Fiat that will (starting in June) be built in China for China, through a joint venture with Guangzhou.

The resulting GAC Fiat enterprise unveiled the Viaggio at the Beijing Auto Show following teasers released a couple of weeks ago. The result looks like a Dart with some extra chrome. Buyers in China will be able to choose from 120- or 150-horsepower versions of Fiat's 1.4-liter T-Jet four with either a five-speed manual or six-speed DCT. Scroll down below for the full press blast and take a look at the high-res image gallery.
Continue reading Fiat darts into China with new Viaggio

Fiat darts into China with new Viaggio originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 17:32:00 EST.
With the compact segment becoming ever more crowded, Dodge is getting aggressive with its new Dart. As promised, pricing on the Italian-bred sedan will start at $15,995 (*before a $795 delivery charge). That undercuts key rivals like the $16,800 Chevrolet Cruze, $16,500 Ford Focus, and $16,130 Toyota Corolla. You can still buy a Honda Civic sedan cheaper, but by only $40.

Above the base Dart are four more trim levels. However, even the $15,995 SE gets Dodge's 160-hp, 2.0-liter Tigershark four-cylinder and a six-speed manual. Occupants get 10 airbags, a seats clad in "denim" cloth, power windows, LED taillights, a CD player with MP3 hookup and projector headlights.

Anyone living in warmer climates should definitely look at the SXT, though. An extra $2,000 gets the most-appreciated feature ever: air conditioning. We can't imagine living without it, but not every competitor offers A/C on their base models. The SXT also adds 17-inch alloys, power door locks, keyless entry, split rear seat, a security system and upgraded sound system. Options include navigation (natch), backup camera, sunroof and a 506-watt sound system.

Go for the Rallye level for $18,995 if you want the Multiair turbocharged 1.4-liter engine that has more torque (184 pound-feet) but no additional horsepower. The force-fed powerplant is optional, but the Rallye's sportier body trim and wider selection of interior colors are standard.

The $19,995 Limited level adds a seven-inch "reconfigurable instrument cluster display," fog lamps, active grille shutters and premium accent stitching. Leather seats also become optional at this level.

At the top of the heap is the Dart R/T (shown above) starting at $22,495. In the third quarter of 2012, Dart buyers will be able to buy the R/T and get a 2.4-liter, Tigershark four-cylinder with 184 horses and 171 lb-ft yoked to either a six-speed manual or Autostick automatic. The R/T also comes with all the goodies on the Limited but adds 18-inch alloys, sport suspension, more aggressive front fascia, dual exhaust, unique seat leather and a heated steering wheel.

The first Dart shipments will hit dealers beginning in June.

Once Dodge announced its intent to race the SRT-built Dart in the U.S. season of Global RallyCross Championship with ESPN, the only logical thing to do next was hand it over to Travis Pastrana for brutal treatment around Chrysler's Chelsea Proving Grounds.

Sadly, the performance of the Dart you'll be able to buy soon is just a tiny bit down on the 600-horsepower, all-wheel-drive sedan in the video below. But knowing such a beast lurks inside the Dart is - kind of - entertaining enough.
Continue reading Dodge Dart Rallycross stars in first Ken Block-style vid

Dodge Dart Rallycross stars in first Ken Block-style vid originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 Apr 2012 11:56:00 EST.
Dodge is taking its new Dart to the races in the U.S. rounds of this year's Global RallyCross Championship with ESPN. Piloted by Travis Pastrana and built by SRT, the GRC challenger is a little different than the sedan you'd find at the dealership: it puts down 600 horsepower and more than 550 pound-feet from it's 2.0-liter, four-cylinder to all four wheels.

The 2012 RallyCross season comprises seven rounds, two of which will be the X Games in Los Angeles on June 30 and July 1. It's the second domestic season for the discipline that's considered to be "motorcross with cars," and the number of rounds has more than doubled from the three held last year. ESPN will be airing all of them, so follow the jump for the press release on Dodge's entry and race info, and click the picture above to enlarge.
Continue reading Dodge to race Dart in Rallycross

Dodge to race Dart in Rallycross originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Mar 2012 08:57:00 EST.
After the culture clash between the Americans at Chrysler and the Germans at Daimler during the bad old DCX days, there has been concern that the latest European occupation of Auburn Hills could lead to similar friction. Granted, Fiat is not Mercedes-Benz, but Italian sensibilities can be quite dissimilar from those of most Detroiters.

So count us doubly impressed to happen upon this video, featuring an Alfa Romeo Giulietta "playing hockey." Never mind that it was Alfa's U.K. group that put together this amusing video to highlight the Giulietta's All Weather traction mode. We'd like to think that somebody from Hockeytown weighed in with some encouragement for the idea.

In fact, now that we think about it, maybe this whole hockey-playing-car thing could be the next extension of Chrysler's "Imported from Detroit" campaign. The new Dodge Dart is all Giulietta underneath, and the Chrysler 300 SRT8 would make one heck of a goon...

Hyundai CEO John Krafcik has confirmed that the Korean automaker will supply Chrysler with transmissions for its new Dodge Dart, according to Car and Driver. While the two automakers may seem like odd dance partners, the tie-up makes plenty of sense. Both companies use engines born out of the now-defunct Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance with Mitsubishi. As a result, 2.0- and 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines found in the Dart share more than a few strands of DNA with the same displacement engines found under the hood of vehicles like the Hyundai Sonata. Needless to say, it shouldn't take too much effort to get the Hyundai gearbox and Chrysler engines to play nice.

We say "shouldn't" because according to Car and Driver, the American manufacturer is reportedly having issues getting the transmission properly calibrated to obtain the lofty fuel economy numbers necessary to satiate the powers that be in Washington. Chrysler hasn't confirmed the move as of yet, and Hyundai is keeping its lips sealed on which transmissions are headed to the Dart line. Even so, if Chrysler's engineers are struggling over calibration, chances are it's a six-speed automatic.

So... what about those lofty 40 miles per gallon claims claims Chrysler was bandying about at the Detroit Auto Show? C/D hypothesizes that figure may be reliant on a specific engine and transmission combination, be it turbocharged 1.4-liter turbo four-cylinder and a dual-clutch gearbox or a 2.0 and a six-speed manual. Curiouser and curiouser.
Dodge Dart to use transmission from Hyundai originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 19 Jan 2012 17:30:00 EST.
Chrysler is serving up an impressive smattering of Mopar accessories for the 2013 Dodge Dart, including a host of performance parts. All told, buyers will be able to chose from a total of 150 accessories that range from an integrated Wi-Fi system to aerodynamic additions.

Chrysler says the Dart will feature the industry's first wireless charging system for phones and other battery-powered gadgets. Users simply install a device-specific case and lay the hardware in a specific charging zone. The device then gets its battery topped off without the hassle of plugging up wires. Handy. Of course, we're more interested in bits like the available 18-inch wheels and performance brake upgrade, which includes new calipers, rotors and performance pads.

In addition, Chrysler is hoping to thwart would-be thieves with a new electronic vehicle tracking system. The automaker partnered with Guidepoint Systmes, a leading company in GPS-based vehicle recovery systems, to provide tracking from coast to coast without a subscription. Hit the jump for the press release and head over to the Mopar site for a look at the full list of available options.
Continue reading Mopar to go full boat with 150 Dodge Dart accessories

Mopar to go full boat with 150 Dodge Dart accessories originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 15:30:00 EST.
How important is the forthcoming 2013 Dodge Dart to the future of Chrysler? Well, it allowed Fiat to boost its stake in Chrysler for the fifth time in the past year today, adding five percent to bring Fiat's total ownership to 58.5 percent.

That's because the new Dodge sedan scored a combined 40 miles per gallon in CAFE fuel economy testing, triggering the increase in ownership under the operating agreement reached following the Chrysler bankruptcy proceedings. (Note that the 40 mpg number is unadjusted, meaning that the actual EPA combined fuel economy, the one published on the window sticker, will be lower.) Chrysler sent the United States Treasury a letter stating that it was "irrevocably committed to begin assembly" of the Dart at its Belvidere plant in Illinois. Chrysler will take the wraps off the Dart on January 9 at the Detroit Auto Show.

Fiat's stake in Chrysler has grown considerably since it received its initial 20-percent share in the immediate aftermath of the automaker's bankruptcy. The Italian automaker has now met all the "performance events" of its agreement with the Treasury, and could buy out the United Auto Workers healthcare trust that owns the remaining 41.5 percent of the company, according to a report in Automotive News. However, that report indicates that Fiat's financial situation may not be solid enough to do so - at least not right away.
Dodge dropped even more teasers on the 2013 Dart early this morning and now comes a full view of the new compact's dashboard courtesy of the automaker's Facebook page.

Aside from the gauge cluster with the integrated TFT display we highlighted earlier, we get an eyeful of the rest of the dash, including the "racetrack" ambient lighting that coincides with the footwells, door handles, map pockets, center console and cup holders. By hitting 'enhance' in Photoshop, we can also get a glimpse of the red-rimmed HVAC controls and the uConnect touchscreen system mounted in the center of the dash. Expect more to follow in the coming weeks before the Dart debuts this January in Detroit.
Here's the rest of the 2013 Dodge Dart's dash originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Dec 2011 19:20:00 EST.
Chrysler left a few fans scratching their heads when the company chose to call its new compact car the Dart. Previous rumors had hinted to the possibility of the resurrection of the Hornet name, but the sporty moniker was nowhere to be found when Dodge showed off a few teaser photos of the Alfa Romeo-based sedan. According to Automotive News, the company built 3.3 million Dart models between 1960 and 1976, and there was a time when nearly every block in the country had at least one Dart sitting on the corner - that kind of hard-earned brand awareness is hard to pass up.

To its fans, Darts were known as affordable, tough-as-nails economical transportation. In many ways, they were some of the longest-lasting vehicles to roll out of Chrysler factories before the company's quality implosion of the late '70s and '80s. Of course, the automaker's naming decision has its detractors, too - those who think Chrysler is taking a risk by exhuming an old moniker that many associate with dowdy, frills-free motoring.

Dodge might have teased us with a few images and some initial powertrain details on the 2013 Dart, but Fiat and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has provided even more in an interview with Reuters.

According to Marchionne, the Dart is one piece of a larger puzzle for Chrysler in 2013, and the all-new Dart - based off a widened and stretched Alfa Romeo Giulietta - will hit 40 mpg thanks to a host of new engines and transmissions.

As previously reported, the turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir fitted to the Fiat 500 Abarth will grace the top of the Dart range, but Dodge also plans to fit modified versions of the 2.0 and 2.4-liter World Gas Engine, comically rebranded as the Tigershark.

When the Dart debuts, a Fiat-sourced six-speed dual-clutch transmission will feed the front wheels, but later in 2013 Dodge will reportedly offer a nine-speed automatic gearbox supplied by the ZF Group and manufactured in South Carolina. ZF officials claim fuel economy will be boosted between 10 to 16 percent over the dual-clutch 'box, and that should put it handily in the 40 mpg range.

And that last bit is important, as Fiat will receive its final five percent of Chrysler stock from the feds when it produces a vehicle with a 40-mpg rating.
Marchionne: 2013 Dodge Dart will have optional 9-speed auto, hit 40 mpg originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Dec 2011 18:57:00 EST.
Don't call it a Hornet. Dodge has released a slew of shadowy teasers for its new compact sedan, the 2013 Dodge Dart. The company is planning a slow reveal, with snippets of the four-door's exterior and interior trickling out between now and the vehicle's full unveil at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. Specifics are still murky at the moment, though we do know Dodge will grace the 2013 Dart with a variety of engine options, including a turbocharged version of the 1.4-liter four-cylinder Multiair engine found in the Fiat 500. If the Fiat 500 Abarth is any indication, that means we're looking at somewhere around 160 horsepower.

The 2013 Dodge Dart makes use of the same bones as the beautiful Alfa Romeo Giulietta, though the chassis has been both stretched and widened to accommodate the wider britches of American buyers. Chrysler says that a full 68 percent of the vehicle's architecture is comprised of high-strength steel, which means the 2013 Dart should retain much of the rigidity that's made the Giulietta a favorite among buyers and critics alike in the EU.

We're plenty excited to get our hands on the 2013 Dodge Dart to see how it stacks up against the likes of the Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Focus, Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra among other winners in the segment. Hit the jump for the full press release and then mosey on over to the car's official teaser site.
Continue reading 2013 Dodge Dart aims for center of compact sedan segment

2013 Dodge Dart aims for center of compact sedan segment originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Dec 2011 10:15:00 EST.
Conan O'Brien is getting ready to launch his new late-night talk show. "Conan" premieres November 8th at 11pm on TBS. He wants to show everyone just how bad-ass this new television show will be. Ditching his beloved 1992 Ford Taurus SHO, O'Brien jumps behind the wheel of a '69 Dodge Dart that is pointed straight at a cliff. He ups the stunt-ante by packing the car with C4 explosives, fireworks from New Hampshire (which technically are not illegal if you fire them off in the Granite state) and un-popped popcorn kernels.

Having the Dart loaded with stuff that explodes and ceremoniously removing his stunt man from the equation, Conan nails the accelerator towards the cliff then Thelma and Louises it over the edge. The result is a loud, explosion-filled wreck that O'Brien walks away from while putting out his flaming hair and leather jacket. It's epic.

Are you still here? Seriously already, check it out after the jump.

Ah, the '70s. Few decades are quite so easily identifiable by its products than the era that brought us disco music and... not much else. For proof, we need look no further than the cherry 1974 Dodge Dart Hang Ten you see above. While the car has gone through a mild restoration to return it to its former glory, the previous owner took pains to keep it as close to its original form as possible. As a result, the Mopar still wears the original Hang Ten graphics, including the ever-cool waves with surf rider on the rear quarter, and the interior is doused in enough multi-color pin stripes and orange carpet to have you pining for your long-lost pet rock.

According to the seller, there were only 500 Darts ever built with the Hang Ten package, making this particular example a rare breed indeed. With a 318 V8 under the hood, the car probably scoots along just fine, and the mountain of paperwork and dealer propaganda that comes along with the sale would probably make you a show circuit hero in no time flat. You can find it on eBay Motors with a Buy It Now price of $22,950, and they'll even throw in a matching surf board.

1962 Dodge Dart limo 'Nunrunner' - Click above for high-res image gallery

And now for something completely different. We can't recall ever seeing another vehicle quite like this 1962 Dodge Dart, which was converted into a limo wagon that was supposedly intended for the Vatican and later sold to a Catholic Church in Kentucky - and that's probably for the best.

As scary as the beast may be to look at, the team from Wicked Rides Inc. reports that it's actually a trouble-free driver thanks to the modern V10 engine yanked from a Dodge Ram and T56 six-speed manual transmission from a Viper it was blessed with when converted into The Nunrunner - reliable enough, in fact, to have taken part in the last Hot Rod Power Tour with nary a breakdown.

Underneath the rusty outer shell sits a chassis that's been fortified with the K-frame and suspension bits from a 2004 Corvette Z06, though we doubt it handles anything like the pilfered sportscar from which those bits came. To fully take in all that the Nunrunner has to offer, we suggest you amble through our photo gallery below and click past the break for a couple of drag racing videos where the eight-door contraption lines up against a Shelby Cobra (real or knockoff, we're not sure) for a trip down the 'ole 1320.

Interested in making this unique vehicle your own? Click here for the actual eBay auction.
