The Omnivore is a two-stroke direct-injected engine designed to take advantage of the latest in electronic engine management and run on just about any liquid fuel (hence the name). In the time since the initial announcement, the boffins at Lotus Engineering have been exercising their creation on the dyno stand to evaluate its performance. <br />
<br />
The single-cylinder engine uses an air-assisted direct injection system. A movable "puck" in the top of the cylinder head allows the compression ratio to be varied. <br />
<br />
The engine has so far been run on gasoline in both spark ignition and homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) modes. The <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/category/hcci/">HCCI</a> mode is of particular interest because it is capable of providing diesel engine-like efficiency without the particulate and NOx emissions that require expensive after-treatment systems in a standard diesel engine. Lotus is claiming the Omnivore can operate in HCCI mode in a wide variety of operating conditions and even from a cold start, something that has been problematic for previous HCCI engines. <br />
<br />
According to the initial test results, the Omnivore is achieving up to a 10 percent improvement in efficiency (as measured by Indicated Specific Fuel Consumption) compared to existing spark ignition direct-injected engines. <br />
<br />
There is clearly a lot of work yet to do, but the concept behind Omnivore shows significant promise. <br />

<br />
When <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/hyundai/">Hyundai</a>'s all new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/sonata">Sonata</a> goes on sale early in 2010, it will arrive in U.S. showrooms with only one available engine, a thoroughly revamped version of the 2.4-liter Theta-II four cylinder. The new engine is Hyundai's first production powerplant with gasoline direct injection, but John Juriga, director of powertrains at the Hyundai-Kia Technical Center (HATCI), promised it wouldn't be the last. Juriga told a media briefing at HATCI recently that Hyundai was planning to roll out GDI across its lineup in the coming years. <br />
<br />
For now though we have to be content with the new Sonata engine, which is now more powerful than the engine it replaces with 200 hp and 186 pound-feet of torque. The basic internal dimensions are carried over from the 2010 port-injected edition, with bore and stroke of 88 mm x 97 mm for a total displacement of 2,359 cc. The new fuel delivery system has allowed the engineering team to bump the compression ratio from 10.5:1 up to 11.3:1. Like other direct injected engines, the charge cooling effect of injecting the fuel in into the high temperature compressed aid allows the elevated compression without the risk of knock. Read on to learn more about the first GDI Hyundai engine. <br />

<br />
When the swoopy new 2011 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/sonata">Sonata</a> goes into production at Hyundai's plant in Alabama early next year, it won't offer a V6 engine anymore, but it will get the company's first ever direct-injected engine. This week in South Korea, Hyundai took the wraps off its 2.4-liter Theta II GDI four-cylinder. Like similar engines from other automakers, Hyundai's engineers have taken advantage of the charge cooling effect of direct injection by boosting the compression ratio to 11.3:1. As a result the engine produces 198 hp and 184 pound-feet of torque at 4,250 rpm in Korean spec. <br />
<br />
The direct injection system is setup to use a two-pulse strategy similar to modern common rail diesels. The initial smaller pulse is ignited by the spark plug and then followed by a second larger pulse as the piston begins its downward stroke. GM uses a similar strategy for its 2.4-liter DI Ecotec because it helps warm the engine faster, heating the catalytic converter and reducing emissions. The GDI Theta II produces from 7-12 percent more torque across its rev range than the port-injected version of the same engine. Efficiency should also improve by about 10 percent although the final certification figures aren't complete yet. The Theta II also gets continuously variable valve timing on both camshafts to round out its high tech upgrades. In addition to the regular Sonata sedan, this engine will likely also be used for the new Sonata hybrid when it debuts late in 2010. <br />

<div style="text-align: center;"><em><strong><small>Mazda Kiyora Concept set to debut at the Tokyo Motor Show - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em></div>
<br />
Mazda has just dropped off a bunch of info about their next-generation clean engines that will be officially unveiled at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Tokyo-Motor-Show/">Tokyo Motor Show</a> in October, and we have two words for you: Direct and Diesel. Along with its next-gen 'Mazda SKY Drive' high-efficiency automatic transmissions, visitors to the at 41st Tokyo Motor Show will get to see the 'Mazda SKY-G' direct injection gas engine and the 'Mazda SKY-D' clean diesel engine. The house of Zoom-Zoom is hoping to use these advanced technologies to boost their corporate average fuel economy by a whopping 30% between 2008 and 2015.<br />
<br />
In typical Mazda fashion, they want everyone to know that they haven't given up on driving excitement in their move to more eco-friendly fare - the Japanese automaker is out to prove that 'fun' and 'green' don't have to be mutually exclusive terms. The Mazda SKY display area will be broken into "Technologies for Today, Tomorrow and The Future." The Today area will show off things like i-stop, the idle start-stop feature that debuted on the 2010 Mazda3. The Future area will host the rotary-powered Mazda Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid, among other things. But the one we're really waiting to see is the updated Mazda Kiyora concept.<br />
<br />
The Kiyora is a lightweight concept first shown in Paris last year. For Tokyo it's powered by a new 1.3-liter direct injection engine. It will travel 32 kilometers per liter of fuel (under Japan's 10-15 mode test cycle) - that's 75 mpg - and promises lots of smiles per gallon as well. Besides that new SKY engine, the Kiyora will also feature the new Mazda SKY-Drive six-speed automatic transmission, i-stop, regenerative braking, and super-slick aerodynamics. It also weighs at least 100 kg less than any other car in the company's current lineup. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/28/tokyo-2009-mazda-debuts-next-gen-sky-clean-engines-transmissio/">Follow the jump</a> for more details from the official press release and check out the high-res gallery below.<br />

How so? By both improving fuel efficiency and increasing horsepower. This being the case, it's not surprising that automakers from all ends of the world are embracing the tech and selling their resultant wares right here in the U.S. of A.<br /> <br /> While Ford has made lots of noise as of late with its so-called <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ecoboost">EcoBoost</a> power-adding system, the Blue Oval is hardly the first automaker to offer direct injection to the masses, even with forced induction. For a complete rundown of all current passenger cars sold in America with direct injection engines, our friends over at <em>Winding Road</em> have compiled what looks to be a pretty complete list in their latest issue. Expect this to be a rapidly expanding list as more and more engines are fitted with direct injection to yield greater fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and more power.<br /> <br /> [Source: <a href="http://wrmag.nextautos.com/issue/49/111">Winding Road</a> - <strong>NOTE: </strong>Link launches magazine e-reader]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/20/if-its-direct-injected-and-sold-in-america-its-on-this-list/">If it's direct-injected and sold in America, it's on this list</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 20 Aug 2009 16:20:00 EST. <div align="center"><em><strong><small>2011 Hyundai Sonata spy shots - Click above for image gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />Back in June, we <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/18/2010-hyundai-santa-fe-sonata-to-get-direct-inject-four-cylinder/">reported on a news story</a> in the <em>Montgomery Advertiser</em> saying that the 2011 Hyundai Sonata would be unveiled in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show. It appears that Hyundai may be holding off the introduction of its bread and butter sedan for a larger audience in Detroit. Inside Line is reporting that the Sonata will bow in the Motor City, giving Hyundai a big-league entry at the North American International Auto Show.<br /><br />When describing the design direction of the new Sonata, Hyundai USA CEO John Krafcik told IL the 2011 model would be "bold, so bold." Judging from the many <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/08/reader-spy-nearly-undisguised-next-gen-hyundai-sonata-snapped-i/">spy photos we've seen</a>, we're thinking that could be an apt description. We see well-sculpted sheetmetal punctuated with a four door coupe-like roof line, but we'll have to wait until the covers come off to hand down a verdict.. <br /><br />Hyundai is also rumored to be using direct injection technology to power the four cylinder Sonata. The mooted 2.2-liter powertrain is expected to produce in the neighborhood of 200 horsepower while also improving fuel economy versus the 2009 model by 5% to 10%. Hyundai has been on a roll of late with its successful launches of the Genesis Coupe and Sedan, and if it can pull off a showstopper at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Detroit-Auto-Show/">Detroit Auto Show</a> with the 2011 Sonata, the Korean automaker will officially be on fire.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-hyundai-sonata-spy-shots/low/">2011 Hyundai Sonata - spy shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-hyundai-sonata-spy-shots/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/djsammy_dsc00300hda_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-hyundai-sonata-spy-shots/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/djsammy_dsc00301y_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-hyundai-sonata-spy-shots/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/djsammy_dsc00302c_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-hyundai-sonata-spy-shots/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/djsammy_dsc00304_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-hyundai-sonata-spy-shots/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/djsammy_dsc00305c_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://blogs.edmunds.com/straightline/2009/07/2011-hyundai-sonata-will-debut-at-detroit-auto-show.html">Inside Line</a> | Images: Sammy_R-Gti of <a href="http://www.assayyarat.com/">assayyarat.com</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/15/report-2011-hyundai-sonata-coming-to-detroit-auto-show/">REPORT: 2011 Hyundai Sonata coming to Detroit Auto Show</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 15 Jul 2009 16:26:00 EST. <div style="text-align: center;"><em><strong><small>2010 BMW 1-Series - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />The BMW 1-Series is a much bigger deal in Europe than it is here in the States. In the US, we can choose among the 128 and 135, and both options come standard with a six-cylinder engine. Overseas, you can pick up the 1 with two, three, four or five doors, and with a wide variety of four cylinder gasoline and diesel powertrains. <br /><br />To keep the good times rolling, team Bimmer is again expanding the 1-Series lineup for 2010. Two new models, the Lifestyle and Sport models, will offer RWD performance in a three- or five-door package beginning this September. The Lifestyle model offers special edition Marrakesh Brown Metallic paint, unique brown body color interior components, chrome-tipped exhaust and 17-inch light aluminum rims. The Sport model includes the M Sports Package, with a sports tuned suspension, unique dual spoke aluminum rims, stainless steel pedals, and an M steering wheel and gearshift lever. <br /><br />On the engine front, a pair of 2.0-liter engines find their way under the bonnet of a 1-Series. The petrol engine utilizes direct injection tech and packs 170 ponies to go along with 155 lb-ft. With the gas-powered 2.0-liter engine, the 1-Series can hit 60 in 7.8 seconds, and it carries a top speed of 149 mph. <br /><br />The diesel variant packs 143 hp and 221 lb-ft, helping to propel the 118d to 60 in nine seconds. The story of merit is fuel economy and CO2 emissions, where where it achieves 4.5 liters/100 kilometers (about 52 mpg US) and a CO2 emission rating of 119 grams per kilometer. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/25/2010-bmw-1-series-gets-two-new-engines-abroad-additional-trim-l/">Hit the jump</a> for more info from BMW's painfully detailed press release.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-1-series-sport-lifestyle/low/">2010 1-Series Sport, Lifestyle</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-1-series-sport-lifestyle/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/1-series031280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-1-series-sport-lifestyle/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/1-series041280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-1-series-sport-lifestyle/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/1-series011280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-1-series-sport-lifestyle/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/1-series021280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/25/2010-bmw-1-series-gets-two-new-engines-abroad-additional-trim-l/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>2010 BMW 1 Series gets two new engines abroad, additional trim levels</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/25/2010-bmw-1-series-gets-two-new-engines-abroad-additional-trim-l/">2010 BMW 1 Series gets two new engines abroad, additional trim levels</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 25 Jun 2009 10:00:00 EST. <br />Hyundai's Montgomery, AL factory added production of four-cylinder engines last year, but recently the engine line has been getting some upgrades. Evidently, Hyundai is getting ready to add direct injection to its 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. Like other DI engines, the revised version gets increased power along with lower fuel consumption. The DI four cylinder will debut in the refreshed 2010 Santa Fe this fall. Next year, when the completely redesigned Sonata goes into production, it will also get the DI engine. <br /><br />Power from the DI four cylinder gets bumped from 176 to 200 hp, and it will likely get around 5-10% better gas mileage. The all-new Sonata will be unveiled at the <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/category/LA-Auto-Show/">LA Auto Show</a> in November. Next year a hybrid model will join the lineup, as well. <br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/article/20090614/NEWS01/906140302/Changes+planned+for+Hyundai+models">Montgomery Advertiser</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/18/2010-hyundai-santa-fe-sonata-to-get-direct-inject-four-cylinder/">2010 Hyundai Santa Fe, Sonata to get direct-inject four-cylinder engines</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 18 Jun 2009 17:31:00 EST. After all, the company only has one main factory that produces a few thousand cars a year. While those cars are high-powered and consume a lot of fuel per mile driven, Lamborghini owners tend to drive those cars far fewer miles than the mainstream autos the rest of us hop into on a daily basis. As such, the Lambos' total emissions don't add up to much. <br /><br />Nonetheless, Lamborghini is still somewhat sensitive to both social and regulatory concerns and has an ambitious plan to reduce CO2 emissions. The automaker is in the process of installing a 17,000 square meter solar array to its factory roof that, when completed later this year, will generate 1,582 MWh of electricity annually. In addition to that, changes are being made inside the plant to improve insulation, lighting, and climate control as part of a broader effort to lower factory-related CO2 emissions 30 percent by 2010. <br /><br />As for the products coming <em>out </em>of the factory, Lamborghini is pursuing several paths towards a goal of 35-percent CO2 reduction by 2015. In addition to expanding the use of technology like the direct injection that debuted on the Gallardo LP560-4 last year, the engineers are working on improved combustion, weight reduction, auto start/stop systems, hybrid drive and biofuel use.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/lamborghini-co-sub-2-sub-reductions/low/">Lamborghini CO2 reductions</a></strong></p><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/lamborghini-co-sub-2-sub-reductions/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/06/864_n_98_1_solar_energy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/lamborghini-co-sub-2-sub-reductions/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/06/864_n_99_2_guido_sacconi_e_stephan_winkelmann_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/lamborghini-co-sub-2-sub-reductions/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/06/864_n_97_0_laboratorio_emissioni_e_cella_clima_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br />[Source: Lamborghini]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/07/lamborghini-adding-solar-power-to-factory-vows-to-cut-range-co/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Lamborghini adding solar power to factory, vows to cut range CO2 35% by 2015</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/07/lamborghini-adding-solar-power-to-factory-vows-to-cut-range-co/">Lamborghini adding solar power to factory, vows to cut range CO2 35% by 2015</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 07 Jun 2009 12:04:00 EST. <br />Last October, it seems that Mazda quietly filed a patent for a twin-spark, direct injection version of the automaker's iconic rotary engine. It's taken this long for anyone to actually notice <a href="http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&amp;Sect2=HITOFF&amp;p=1&amp;u=/netahtml/PTO/search-bool.html&amp;r=1&amp;f=G&amp;l=50&amp;co1=AND&amp;d=PG01&amp;s1=20090101103&amp;OS=20090101103&amp;RS=20090101103">application 20090101103</a>, which appears to have been approved just last month, but it's still an interesting development in the ongoing saga of pistonless engine.<br /><br />First developed and patented by German engineer Felix Wankel way back in the early 1950s, the rotary engine has always been able to make lots of power relative to its small size, but it has also proven extremely difficult to keep emissions and fuel consumption at acceptable levels. Adding direct injection may be one effective way to manage the fuel consumption issue, and it's long been assumed Mazda would go this route on the next version of its Renesis rotary.<br /><br />Further, it seems the automaker is working to slightly change the dimensions of the rotor housing (increased displacement?) and the distance between the twin spark plugs, which may have desirable effects on the engine's tailpipe emissions. It's certainly no sure-thing that this engine is going into production, but it shows the Japanese automaker is intent on improving its rotary technology. <a href="http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&amp;Sect2=HITOFF&amp;p=1&amp;u=/netahtml/PTO/search-bool.html&amp;r=1&amp;f=G&amp;l=50&amp;co1=AND&amp;d=PG01&amp;s1=20090101103&amp;OS=20090101103&amp;RS=20090101103">Click here</a> to see the actual patent application, and check out all seventeen diagrams in our gallery below.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mazda-rotary-engine-patent-drawings/low/">Mazda rotary engine patent drawings</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mazda-rotary-engine-patent-drawings/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/mazdarotarypatent---03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mazda-rotary-engine-patent-drawings/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/mazdarotarypatent---04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mazda-rotary-engine-patent-drawings/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/mazdarotarypatent---05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mazda-rotary-engine-patent-drawings/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/mazdarotarypatent---06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mazda-rotary-engine-patent-drawings/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/mazdarotarypatent---07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&amp;Sect2=HITOFF&amp;p=1&amp;u=/netahtml/PTO/search-bool.html&amp;r=1&amp;f=G&amp;l=50&amp;co1=AND&amp;d=PG01&amp;s1=20090101103&amp;OS=20090101103&amp;RS=20090101103">U.S. Patent &amp; Trademark Office</a> via <a href="http://swdelaw.blogspot.com/2009/05/mazdas-next-gen-rotary-engine.html">SWDELAW</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/22/is-the-next-mazda-renesis-rotary-set-to-get-direct-injection/">Is the next Mazda Renesis rotary set to get direct-injection?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 22 May 2009 10:26:00 EST. <br />On the surface, it would be difficult to find two machines that share less in common than the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/21/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-porsche-911-carrera-4s/">2009 Porsche 911</a> and the latest <a href="http://www.ski-doo.com/en-US/Snowmobiles/MXZ/Overview.htm?Sled=MXZX">Ski-Doo MX Z X</a> snowmobile. But dig a little deeper (into their engine bays) and things start to show a few similarities, most notably the use of direct injection. After taking a little detour explaining how direct injection came about in Germany during World War II, the scribes at <em>Winding Road</em> put the two DI machines up against each other for some impromptu non-instrumented drag racing. <br /><br />In one lane, we have the twin-cylinder, two-stroke engine in the Ski-Doo that displaces 600cc and sends 120 horsepower to the single studded rear track. Across the aisle sits a 3.8-liter flat-six engine from Porsche that puts out 385 raging ponies and sends power to all four wheels. Surprisingly, the two heavyweights proved to be evenly matched in straight-line acceleration when each was placed in its proper element. <br />Mercedes-Benz' in-house tuning arm, AMG, has <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/14/amg-boss-the-horsepower-wars-are-over/">announced the horsepower wars are over</a>, and the automaker is gearing up to implement a new range of technologies that will help reduce fuel consumption by 2012.<br /><br />According to AutoTelegraaf, M-B will introduce start-stop technology on AMG models as early as next year, along with launching a direct-injection system based of the second-generation currently employed on the <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/10/23/c-350-cgi-blueefficiency-28-mpg-in-a-large-petrol-sedan/">C350 CGI BlueEfficiency</a>. The automaker has set an internal goal of reducing fuel consumption across its line-up by 30% in the next three years. While diesels and new engine technologies will go a long way to achieving that goal, Mercedes plans to begin reducing the weight of its vehicles through the use of more composite materials and other weight-saving assembly procedures.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-sl65-amg-black-series/low/">2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-sl65-amg-black-series/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/sl65amgblackseries01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-sl65-amg-black-series/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/sl65amgblackseries02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-sl65-amg-black-series/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/sl65amgblackseries03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-sl65-amg-black-series/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/sl65amgblackseries04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-sl65-amg-black-series/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/sl65amgblackseries05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=nl&amp;u=http://autotelegraaf.nl/&amp;ei=BYqKSZXQNJj8MsaMqNYH&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=translate&amp;resnum=1&amp;ct=result&amp;prev=/search%3Fq%3Dautotelegraaf%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26hs%3DMrI%26pwst%3D1">AutoTelegraaf</a> via <a href="http://www.motorauthority.com/amg-introducing-direct-injection-and-stop-start-tech-by-2012.html">Motor Authority</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/05/start-stop-direct-injection-coming-to-amg-models-next-year/">Start-stop, direct-injection coming to AMG models next year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 05 Feb 2009 08:58:00 EST. <br />The current Buick LaCrosse is one of those cars that passes you on the road and you don't even notice it. GM and the Buick design team are looking to remedy that situation with the 2010 LaCrosse. Classy sheet metal, vastly improved interior materials, and an all-new powertrain will help the new LaCrosse compete with the likes of the Lexus ES350 and the Lincoln MKS. A 260 hp, 3.0L direct injected V6 and a 3.6L powerplant that outputs 280 ponies means the new LaCrosse will also be able to compete on performance and efficiency as well.<br /><br />We had the opportunity to talk with several of the people responsible for the new LaCrosse, and we had cameras rolling so you could get in on the conversation. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/08/video-2010-buick-lacrosse-inside-and-out/">Hit the jump</a> to view the video for yourself, and if you'd like to read our extensive preview of Buick's newest sedan, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/08/detroit-preview-2010-buick-lacrosse-breaks-cover/">click here</a>.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-buick-lacrosse-live/low/">2010 Buick LaCrosse - LIVE</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-buick-lacrosse-live/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/00_lacrosselive_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-buick-lacrosse-live/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/01_lacrosselive_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-buick-lacrosse-live/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/02_lacrosselive_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-buick-lacrosse-live/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/03_lacrosselive_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-buick-lacrosse-live/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/04_lacrosselive_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/08/video-2010-buick-lacrosse-inside-and-out/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>VIDEO: 2010 Buick LaCrosse inside and out</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/08/video-2010-buick-lacrosse-inside-and-out/">VIDEO: 2010 Buick LaCrosse inside and out</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 12:30:00 EST. <br />The 2010 Chevy Equinox looks to be a far more sophisticated vehicle than the crossover it replaces. It will be powered by a choice of two direct injection engines, with the four-cylinder model able to crest 30 mpg on the highway and the new 3.0L V6 packing 255 horsepower. Chevy's new crossover also adds upgraded aesthetics with expressive, modern headlamps and tail lights, the new corporate Chevy grille and a more muscular stance. On the inside, the Equinox also looks very Malibu with a sweeping, double cockpit and a center stack that looks as good as any in the segment.<br /><br /> We had a chance to get down and dirty with the all-new Equinox at the GM Design Center last week, and the video evidence of our trip is available <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/22/video-2010-chevy-equinox-inside-and-out/">after the jump</a> for your high-def, widescreen viewing pleasure. <br />Now that General Motors will be getting a cash infusion to stay in business at least through January, the automaker plans to unveil some new products at next month's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Detroit-Auto-Show/">Detroit Auto Show</a>. The first one we can show you is the second-generation 2010 Chevy Equinox. You might recognize the greenhouse from spy photos we published earlier this year in which which the CUV was <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/18/spy-shots-production-provoq-a-k-a-the-cadillac-brx/">misidentified as the Cadillac BRX</a>. While the Equinox gets a complete re-skin for 2010, the new CUV's dimensions are within an inch of the current model in all directions. <br /><br />The Equinox remains a unibody crossover with either front- or all-wheel drive and the same basic suspension layout as before. The platform is an evolution of the current Theta architecture shared with the Saturn Vue. The Equinox's new styling looks more contemporary with prominent wheel arches and the obligatory Chevy twin-port grille. Inside, a new dual cockpit setup looks very similar to the one in the larger Traverse. As expected of any new model these days, the full array of USB audio, Bluetooth and DVD entertainment systems are also now available. Read about the new engines powering the Equinox after the jump. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-chevrolet-equinox/low/">2010 Chevrolet Equinox</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-chevrolet-equinox/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/x10ct_eq006-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-chevrolet-equinox/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/x10ct_eq001-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-chevrolet-equinox/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/x10ct_eq007-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-chevrolet-equinox/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/x10ct_eq004-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-chevrolet-equinox/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/x10ct_eq005-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/live-2010-chevrolet-equinox/low/">LIVE: 2010 Chevrolet Equinox</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/live-2010-chevrolet-equinox/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010-equinox-1920-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/live-2010-chevrolet-equinox/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010-equinox-1920-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/live-2010-chevrolet-equinox/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010-equinox-1920-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/live-2010-chevrolet-equinox/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010-equinox-1920-9_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/live-2010-chevrolet-equinox/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010-equinox-1920-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Chevrolet]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/21/detroit-preview-2010-chevrolet-equinox-debuts-with-direct-injec/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Detroit Preview: 2010 Chevrolet Equinox debuts with direct injection</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/21/detroit-preview-2010-chevrolet-equinox-debuts-with-direct-injec/">Detroit Preview: 2010 Chevrolet Equinox debuts with direct injection</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 21 Dec 2008 01:01:00 EST. <div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"><small>Click above for high-res image gallery of Hyundai HED-5 i-Mode</small></span><br /></div>
<br />We first saw Hyundai's rolling CUV shapeship, the <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/11/19/la-2008-hyundai-announces-production-approval-for-hed-5-i-mode/">HED-5 i-Mode</a>, back <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/05/geneva-2008-hyundai-hed-5-i-mode-aims-to-isolate/">in Geneva</a>, but today at the <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/category/la-auto-show/">LA Auto Show</a> is the first time the Korean automaker has shown the car in the States. New to the crossover is a 2.0L gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine that Hyundai plans to roll out in production machines shortly. The new <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/la-2008-hyundai-hed-5-i-mode/1172053/">Theta Turbo GDI engine</a> puts out 286 horsepower, which is very impressive for such a small powerplant. Hyundai puts its direct injection and turbo technology to good effect and combines these new features with its Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) to allow for a 15-20 percent fuel economy increase compared with a standard 2.0L four-banger. Expect to see this new engine make its way into a production car sometime in 2010.<br /><br />According to Hyundai, the HED-5 has been approved for production and a new six-seat production CUV will hit the market in 2010 that's inspired by its design. Of course, don't expect to see its far-out future-spec interior make it to production, but the GDI engine and general look of the concept is a lock. <br /><br /><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/la-2008-hyundai-hed-5-i-mode/">Hyundai HED-5 i-Mode</a></strong><br /><br />

The Smart Idle Stop System (SISS) uses only direct injection and combustion to restart your vehicle, while most start-stop systems use an electric motor and traditional engine start-up process. SISS stops the pistons in the optimal position for an engine restart, and then injects fuel into the cylinders before the engine begins to rotate and lets the power of combustion turn the engine over to start. This enables an SISS-equipped Mazda petrol engine to restart in 0.35 seconds, or half the time of start-stop systems using an electric motor. The catch: SISS only works with automatic transmissions.<br /><br />Mazda's SISS system will be available in 2009, but the Japanese automaker hasn't yet announced which models will receive the fuel-saving technology, nor has it disclosed whether SISS will be available in the States at launch. With Americans becoming increasingly sensitive to fuel economy and petrol prices, we hope we're not left out in the cold. Hit the jump to review Mazda's press release. <br /><br />[Source: Mazda]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/09/mazda-introduces-clever-start-stop-system-with-direct-injection/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mazda introduces clever start-stop system with direct injection</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/09/mazda-introduces-clever-start-stop-system-with-direct-injection/">Mazda introduces clever start-stop system with direct injection</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 09 Sep 2008 13:59:00 EST. Edmunds <em>Inside Line</em> quotes an anonymous senior engineer at the General saying that the unique sport ute will receive automaker's 3.6L V6, as well. That's good news for fuel economy, but the better news is that the 3.6L V6 of choice will be the direct injection versoin. That will likely give the G8 ST the same 300+hp as the 2010 Camaro and Cadillac CTS. That should also make the base ST more appealing to enthusiasts and the average Joe, with more power at the pedal and a healthier torque curve. The DI version of GM's 3.6L V6 will also likely be available in the base G8 sedan for the 2010 model year, as well.<br /><br />It makes sense that GM would go with direct injection for the G8 ST, as the General has already promised the powerful V6 for the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/27/2009-chevy-traverse-priced-from-28-990/">Chevy Traverse</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/21/2010-chevy-camaro-official-details-and-images/">Camaro</a>. Putting DI in more vehicles will help drive down the cost of producing these more high-tech engines economy of scale while also giving customers V8ish performance with V6ish fuel economy. Keep in mind, however, that though a GM engineer was quoted, none of this is official word from GM, so plans could change. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-pontiac-g8-st/low/">2010 Pontiac G8 ST</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-pontiac-g8-st/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/x10pn_g8001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-pontiac-g8-st/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/x10pn_g8002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-pontiac-g8-st/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/x10pn_g8003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-pontiac-g8-st/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/x10pn_g8004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-pontiac-g8-st/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/x10pn_g8005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/News/articleId=130949"><em>Inside Line</em></a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/20/2010-pontiac-g8-st-may-get-direct-inject-v6/">2010 Pontiac G8 ST may get direct-inject V6</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 12:59:00 EST. While it's normal for most automakers to take the lessons learned from motorsports and apply them to their road cars, Porsche is doing it the other way around.<br /><br />The 3.4-liter V8 in the Porsche RS Spyder campaigning in the ALMS LMP2 class will be fitted with direct injection, bringing power levels up while reducing fuel consumption. While the old mill put out 476 hp at 10,000 RPM and 273 lb.-ft. of torque beginning at 7,500 RPM, the new engine gets a 27 hp bump, to bring levels up to 503 hp at 10k RPM and 284 lb.-ft. of twist at 8,500 rpm. That, combined with the decreased in fuel consumption should make the Spyder even more competitive in a class it's continuing to dominate.<br /><br /><em>Full details are posted in the press release below the fold.</em><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-rs-spyder-with-di/low/">Porsche RS Spyder with DI</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-rs-spyder-with-di/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/01_porsche_rs_spyder_di_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-rs-spyder-with-di/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/02_porsche_rs_spyder_di_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-rs-spyder-with-di/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/03_porsche_rs_spyder_di_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/31/road-to-race-porsche-rs-spyder-gets-direct-injection/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Road to Race: Porsche RS Spyder gets direct injection</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/31/road-to-race-porsche-rs-spyder-gets-direct-injection/">Road to Race: Porsche RS Spyder gets direct injection</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 31 Jul 2008 17:58:00 EST. All three models will dispatch with the legendary M97 powerplant in favor of the new, direct-injected A91 flat-six that's equipped on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/06/officially-official-2009-porsche-911-gets-direct-injection-and/">recently updated 911 Carrera</a>.<br /><br />The two turbocharged 911s will be packing 3.6-liters of displacement, with a 97 mm bore and an 81.5 mm stroke (the outgoing engine was sized 100 mm x 76.4 mm), along with revised turbochargers and intercoolers. <em>Autocar</em>'s sources suggest that output on both models will rise by around 20 hp, with the Turbo producing 500 hp and the GT2 pushing out approximately 550 hp. Torque figures should also increase by around four percent.<br /><br />The GT3 will remain naturally aspirated, with a 3.8-liter version of the A91 with a 102 mm bore and a 77.5 mm stroke. The same internal changes from the Carrera S will carry over to the GT3, including lightweight pistons, valves and springs. Output should increase from around 415 to 430 hp. And all of these changes will also increase fuel efficiency and decrease C02 output. 'Cause that's what <em>really</em> matters... right?<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/spy-shots-porsche-998-911-mule/low/">Spy Shots: Porsche 998 911 mule</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/spy-shots-porsche-998-911-mule/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/01_998_spy_kgp_mule_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/spy-shots-porsche-998-911-mule/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/02_998_spy_kgp_mule_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/spy-shots-porsche-998-911-mule/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/03_998_spy_kgp_mule_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/spy-shots-porsche-998-911-mule/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/04_998_spy_kgp_mule_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/spy-shots-porsche-998-911-mule/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/05_998_spy_kgp_mule_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-porsche-911-carrera-and-carrera-s/low/">2009 Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-porsche-911-carrera-and-carrera-s/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/09_porsche997_hi_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-porsche-911-carrera-and-carrera-s/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/09_porsche997_hi_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-porsche-911-carrera-and-carrera-s/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/09_porsche997_hi_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-porsche-911-carrera-and-carrera-s/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/09_porsche997_hi_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-porsche-911-carrera-and-carrera-s/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/09_porsche997_hi_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/Porsche-Concepts/234258/">Autocar</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/30/no-surprise-porsche-911-turbo-gt2-and-gt3-getting-direct-injec/">No Surprise: Porsche 911 Turbo, GT2 and GT3 getting direct-injection</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 30 Jul 2008 14:26:00 EST.
