Summers in Michigan are little more than a series of car shows, with events ranging from the Woodward Dream Cruise to the Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance. While we love Woodward's tribute to American Muscle, only the Concours could deliver on genuine luxury exotics. And what supercar display would be complete without the father of all exotics, Ferrari.

The Meadow Brook Concours didn't disappoint with Ferraris ranging from a pristine 1953 Tipo 166mm Competizione Spider with its intricate 2.0-liter V12 engine, to the new for 2010 Ferrari California. Other Maranello-sourced supercars include the 612 Scaglietti, the 1967 330 Spyder with its three valve, 450 hp mill, and the Concours award-winning 1967 Dino Competizione driven by none other than movie director/car nut Jim Glickenhaus. Click the gallery below to take a tour of the best the Prancing Horse had to offer at Concours 2009.

Dino Roso design study- Click above for a high-res image gallery

Good or bad, everybody's got an opinion on the styling of contemporary Ferrari offerings - a fact that could go a long way toward explaining why everybody and their cousin wants to have a go at designing the Italian stallions themselves. The latest to join the fold is Paolo Roso, an apparently aspiring automotive designer. His project? The Dino Roso, a project that aims to reinterpret the classic 1967 Dino 246 GT in a radically different form.

While we have to admit we're not big fans of the front end (and we have to wonder how the driver is supposed to see around those enormous pillars - rollover protection isn't an issue in fantasy) - there are certain attractive elements to the design. If you care to see for yourself, it's on display through October in 1:10 scale model form at the "Sognando l'automobile" (Dreaming the Automobile) exhibit at the Museo dell'Automobile Bonfanti-Vimar in northern Italy. Today, the automaker launched www.ferrarigtcountdown.com where the car will be gradually revealed during the runup to the Paris Motor Show this September. Ferrari promises to feed us technical details, sound files and photos of the car between now and Paris. Right now you can see a few teaser images and hear the engine sing its sweet, sweet song as it starts up, runs up and down through the gears, and screams by at full tilt. The countdown timer on the site currently shows 10 days and 22 hours until something else is revealed. Looks like we can put those Dino-branded rumors to rest for good; whatever this car is officially named, it is most definitely a Ferrari. See you in ten days, when the next puzzle piece hits the web.

[Source: Ferrari]
Continue reading Ferrari GT heading to Paris, teaser site launched

Ferrari GT heading to Paris, teaser site launched originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 09 May 2008 16:02:00 EST. Widely anticipated to be the oft-refuted new "entry-level" Ferrari, dubbed tentatively as the Dino or 430 GT California, the test mule has been spotted repeatedly making its way around any of the three circuits that the company owns in Italy.

These new spy shots reveal a nose as long as the 599 GTB Fiorano's or the 612 Scaglietti's, but while those models have to accommodate a long V12 under the hood, the new model is expected to carry a front-mounted V8 based on the architecture shared by the Ferrari F430, Maserati GranTurismo and Quattroporte and Alfa 8C Competizione. While the former is built by Ferrari at its factory in Maranello, the fact that the plant is already at capacity while demand continues to grow and the company continues to expand into new markets leads to speculation that the new model could be built alongside the others at Maserati's factory in nearby Modena. We're also interested to see whether the headlights reminiscent of the classic Daytona (like the one Ferrari also showed in Geneva) are just part of the camouflage, or if they will make it to production. One way or another, we'll see after the summer in the French capital.

Gallery: Ferrari at Geneva 2008

[Source: CarAdvice.com.au]
Spy Shots: baby Ferrari at it again originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 Apr 2008 12:28:00 EST. The new model's name is still open to speculation, but The Car Connection is reporting that a "GT" moniker will likely be used, something along the lines of GT420 or GT470. Pricing is expected to be set so that the Ferrari will slot in between the Maserati Gran Turismo and the Ferrari F430.

[Source: The Car Connection]
Don't call it "Dino": Ferrari bringing new model to Paris originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 17 Mar 2008 13:25:00 EST. All the while, Ferrari has continuously thrown cold water on the idea, saying that such a new model would push production volumes beyond where the company wants to go. Never content to let official denials ruin the party, auto writers continue to press ahead.

Autoweek is reporting that the new sub-F430 model is code-named F149 internally at Ferarri and that it may break out into the open as early as the Paris Motor Show in September. The speculation is that the F149 will be the first Ferrari (if it even carries that badge) to feature a direct-injected engine -- a 4.3L V-8 based on the F430 block -- and a folding hardtop. The new model is expected to be based on the Maserati GranTurismo platform. If the F149 joins the party as a new model, it could push Ferrari volumes up from the current 6,000 to 10,000 annually.

[Source: AutoWeek]
Paris '08 Preview: New small Ferrari F149 to debut? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Mar 2008 19:10:00 EST.
Like a family of cockroaches living behind your kitchen cabinets, some rumors just won't die. No matter how ridiculous, they just won't go away. And so we waste our cyber-space reassuring our loyal readership of that they're nothing more than smoke and mirrors.

Here we're talking about the prospect of a sport-utility vehicle from Ferrari. We've seen different renderings and projections, and although we're not sold, apparently some people still think it could happen. Leave it to the Dutch, then, to get it right from the source. Holland's automotive magazine AutoWeek spoke with Ferrari's general manager Amadeo Felisa, who firmly denied that the company is developing - or even considering - an SUV. And we'll take him at his word, even if we have our doubts when they continue to refute the development of an entry-level model.

On that front, in lieu of the usual mantra that the company is not building a successor to the Dino, Felisa specified that Ferrari was not developing a six-cylinder model, which doesn't rule out the possibility of a new model to slot in below the F430 with any other type of powertrain configuration... say, a V8 for example.

It arose from a stillborn Maserati that was to be a companion to the Granturismo. Maserati couldn't afford to make it, so the project became the Dino.

Internally known as the F149, the Dino will be a comfy, front-engined GT with a retractable hardtop. Car doesn't know what the Dino will look like, and oddly, they wonder if the Freitas exercise is an actual styling buck (don't they read Autoblog?). We just hope it doesn't look like Car's rendering, which is the 'shroomed-out offspring of a 612 and 599 wearing cheesy aftermarket rims. Production is slated for next summer.

The next F430 will be all new, not a continuing evolution of the current body style that began with the 360. It will be smaller, faster, lighter, harder, and come as a hardtop only. Instead of more bore, it will get the small displacement, direct injection, turbocharged V8 that's been rumored. Add to that some active aero, brake energy capture, pushrod suspension, and a ballistic valvetrain. It will bow in 2009 or 2010, for a hefty premium over the F430.

Ferrari's getting in on the environmental game. Well, relatively speaking. The next supercar from the home of the prancing horse will be lighter and use a lower-displacement engine, but still have at least 500 HP. Thoughts are that such a car would derive its powerplant from the one mooted for the Millechili concept shown earlier this year. Though the car shown was nothing more than cardboard, the powerplant spoken of was a twin-turbocharged, direct-injection, 550-hp, 3.0-liter V-8.

The other big news is more information on Ferrari's No-It's-Not-A-Dino. Instead, what will be revealed early next year is a 2+2 V8 with a 4.3L V8 mounted up front. Other changes to the rest of Ferrari's line have taken a back seat due to the marque's growing popularity. The 599 hardtop convertible has been put on hold in light of the coupe's 18-month waiting list. The 612 will remain unchanged until its replaced in 2010.

We're no closer to figuring out what this car will actually be, but thanks to some cameramen lurking in bushes, we know more about how it sounds. The Ferrari "Dino"/possible Maserati Ghibli has been caught on tape during what appears to be a field trip from the Alfa Romeo factory to the 'Ring and back again. The video speaks for itself, and from the way the car does its work, we think it will, too. And no matter what it's called, Dino, Ghibli, or anything else, it certainly sounds vicious. The guys at Winding Road are claiming it'll be available as a either a 2+2 or a strict two-seater and its chassis will be constructed with aluminum by Alcoa. Apparently you'll be able to option the car with two seats in the back or a storage shelf, which could also potentially reduce weight.

The car won't feature the latest in Ferrari go-fast gear, but it'll still get a V8 powerplant with around 400hp on offer. Though many have suggested the new model will be called the Dino, one of Winding Road's sources has revealed the car won't in fact be named after the son of Enzo Ferrari.

The test-mule seen here may look like a regular 599 GTB with some camo gear but from certain angles the panels seem to be out of shape, suggesting the car's internals are different in size to the current Ferrari flagship. We can also gather that the car's engine will likely sit up front and its wheelbase will be significantly shorter than the 599's.

[Source: Winding Road]

Gallery: Ferrari Dino - spy shots

More details on Ferrari's "Dino" prototype originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Aug 2007 14:32:00 EST. The car is wearing 599 bodywork, but from certain angles it looks like a kid wearing its dad suit, possibly suggesting a smaller platform underneath. Priddy says the real tell tale sign that this is the Dino was its engine sound, or lack of it. Apparently the motor did not possess the sharp rasp of, say, an F430 or any other Ferrari model currently on the market.

Though Ferrari continues to deny plans of producing the Dino, no one believes them. It is thought Pininfarina will do the design work for the car, and it will be built at the Maserati factory in Modena, the city of Enzo Ferrari's birth. Production of the Dino could amount to 4,000 units annually, which would instantly double Ferrari's yearly production according to Priddy, as well as open up the brand to a new set of customers. Pricing should start around 100,000 to 110,000 Euro, which converts to $134,000 to $148,000 USD.

[Source: Brenda Priddy & Co.]

Gallery: Ferrari Dino - spy shots

Spy Shots: Ferrari Dino caught! originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Aug 2007 13:16:00 EST.
Manufacturers testing development mules for upcoming models go to great lengths to camouflage their prototypes in order to hide from the public what they're working on. That never stops the motoring press, in print and in cyberspace, from speculating on what that the camouflage is disguising, usually with considerable accuracy. A certain set of spy shots, however, have been enigmatic, resulting in a number of different theories.

The spy shots in question show a two-door sports car being developed by Ferrari. We've speculated that the shots in question show an "entry level" Ferrari model, possibly to be labeled as a new Dino, despite Maranello's repeated denials with which, by now, we're all familiar. Our friends over at Motor Authority say it's a new model from sister-company Maserati, to be positioned below the new GranTurismo. The folks at Carscoop, meanwhile, insist that the prototype is more simply a convertible version of the aforementioned GT.

Continue reading Speculazione: Is this a new Maserati or the Ferrari Dino?

Speculazione: Is this a new Maserati or the Ferrari Dino? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Jul 2007 15:28:00 EST.
So many designers are getting in on Dino action these days, we can only hope the car doesn't turn into the automotive equivalent of Snakes on a Plane. Ferrari's consistent disavowals regarding any plans to make "a cheap Ferrari" is not stopping those with pens and intricate rendering software from making their own. Next into the breach is Ernesto Freitas, a Portuguese designer and engineer who has not only drafted a mock-up Dino, he then made a foam model. It's not as elegant as some of the other randomly generated Dinos we've seen -- things get quite busy aft of the doors -- but there is a healthy dose of Dino language to be had throughout. No matter what, though, full marks to Mr. Freitas for commitment to his vision. As for you, Ferrari, we'll see you in Frankfurt with The Car That Isn't A Cheap Ferrari...

"We are not developing a cheap Ferrari" is the oft-repeated party line in Maranello. "Just don't look over there," might as well be the next, as spy shots have turned up yet again suggesting that Ferrari is indeed developing an "entry-level" model to slot in the company's line-up below the F430.

The latest photos show a developmental test mule on the dynamometer wearing what appears to be disguised bodywork from the recently launched Maserati GranTurismo. Sources suggest, however, that the baby Ferrari would share more in common with the achingly gorgeous and limited production Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, but with even more power. When that car was being developed, original speculation suggested it was for Ferrari, but that the project was passed over to Alfa Romeo instead.

So has Ferrari been blatantly lying? A few possibilities could explain the discrepancy. First is that the car spotted is not a Dino as speculated by the motoring press, but actually a test mule for the upcoming new Maserati convertible; however, based as closely as it will be on the existing GranTurismo, extensive drivetrain testing would seem unnecessary. It could, however, be testing a new transmission for the Maserati range. Another explanation about the seeming chasm between what we see and what Ferrari says could be drawn from the example of the original Dinos, which were not badged as Ferraris but as a separate brand. If the photos are accurate, the new model could be front-engined like the 599 GTB instead of mid-engined like the F430 as originally thought. One way or another, we look forward to finding out.

You have Turkish designer Ugur Sahin to thank for the Ferrari Dino Concept you see above. Sahin has nothing to do with Ferrari, and the car above is sprung from his imagination ... but if the actual Dino unveiled in Frankfurt happened to look just like this, we wouldn't be at all disappointed. His goal was to update the Dino while keeping the rounded styling language of and trademark rear window of the original. From our view, it's mission accomplished. The most interesting thing about the concept is that Sahin is actually studying international hotel management -- he only designs on the side. May we suggest a change of major, Mr. Sahin?

Ferrari Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo basically told reporters as much at the Geneva auto show. The model that will debut in Frankfurt is an evolution of the F430, which is expected to be more powerful and lighter than the current coupe through the use of F1 engineering and technology. This will follow the pattern Ferrari set with the 360 series, when a Challenge racecar was built off that platform, then a street version of that racecar sold to the public. We still aren't sure whether the F430 version will wear the Challenge Stradale moniker, but we do suspect that power will be around 525 (up from 489) and that weight should drop by a couple hundred pounds to keep it on par with Lamborghini's recent Gallardo Superleggera and Porsche's 911 GT3 RS. Whatever they call it, we will officially go on record as saying it will be our new favorite Ferrari. Until the 599 Barchetta pops up, that is.

[Source: Automotive News, sub. req'd]
Continue reading Ferrari to debut new model in Frankfurt, not the Dino

Ferrari to debut new model in Frankfurt, not the Dino originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Mar 2007 16:29:00 EST. The return of the Dino has been rumored far and wide, and we'd all love to see a Ferrari that may be a little more obtainable for us plebians. Andrea Rosati has dreamed up a car that looks an awful lot like what we've already seen in the form of the 420 Dino. One welcome change from 99% of Ferrari pictures out there is Rosati's use of giallo instead of the ubiquitous rosso. Speculative minds churning feverishly, Infomotori goes on to imagine a 300hp V6 displacing 3.0 liters offering up performance on par with the Porsche Boxster.

True or not, the idea of an entry-level Ferrari never fails to excite. It's not the flat-out performance, but the entire package. Sumptuous old-world interiors, unabashed style (sometimes good, sometimes bad, always engaging), glorious sounds from the machinery -- these cars are not about shuttling you around from chore to chore. Ferraris are about the the goods under the skin. We have no doubt that the new Dino will be the bottom of the range should it ever emerge, but there will be nothing cheap or second-rate about it. Every marque needs to have an entry point, and a Dino would likely be in $100,000 territory. Still, it'd be cheaper than its stablemates - and there is no such thing as a cheap Ferrari. A "project car" Mondial will still run you 10 grand.

[Source: Infomotori]

Gallery: Ferrari Dino (renderings) - By Andrea Rosati for InfoMotori.com

More rendered speculation: Dino originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 25 Feb 2007 08:09:00 EST. The body will likely begin as a hardtop, with a targa or cabrio due within the first two years of the Dino's initial launch. However, AutoExpress reports that there's been some infighting between Ferrari and Pininfarina, regarding making the Dino a coupe-cabrio with a folding hardtop option.

Pricing will be set in the £82,000 to £90,000 range and sales are expected to begin in 2010. Ferrari hopes to produce between 3,500 and 5,000 cars annually, with their aim set on would-be buyers of the 911 Turbo and AM V8 Vantage.

Additionally, AutoExpress was able to confirm that this new addition to the Ferrari lineup would allow the F430 to move further upmarket (as if it could), by coming equipped with a new, 5-liter, 550 HP, V10 in 2008, then undergoing a full redesign by 2010.

[Source: AutoExpress]

UPDATE: For the record, we saw this on Winding Road's January issue and when we finally decided to post on it, they're intitial article slipped our mind.
