<br />
Happy Valentine's Day, diesel lovers! <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chrysler/">Chrysler</a> announced today that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ram/1500/">Ram 1500</a> will offer a light-duty diesel engine when it goes into production this fall. Using the same turbocharged 3.0-liter <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ecodiesel/">EcoDiesel</a> V6 recently introduced in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/jeep/grand+cherokee/">2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee</a>, the Ram 1500 is expected to get even better fuel economy than the current 2013 model's best-in-class 25 miles per gallon on the highway.<br />
<br />
Power output has not been released for the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, but in the Grand Cherokee, this engine produces 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, and it will be paired with Chrysler's eight-speed automatic transmission. This has definitely been a busy and exciting year for the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ram/">Ram</a> division, bringing home major awards such as the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/01/14/cadillac-ats-ram-1500-named-2013-north-american-car-and-truck-u/">2013 North American Truck of the Year</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/12/07/2013-ram-1500-tows-away-motor-trend-truck-of-the-year-lau/">2013 Motor Trend Truck of the Year</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/10/23/2013-ram-1500-earns-truck-of-texas-honors/">2013 Truck of Texas</a> not to mention the recent announcement that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ram/hd/">Ram HD</a> models will offer a best-in-class <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/01/09/2013-ram-heavy-duty-seeks-to-obliterate-rivals-with-claimed-30-0/">towing capacity of 30,000 pounds</a> - all of which is pointed out in the press release, <a href="/2013/02/14/ram-1500-to-get-v6-turbodiesel-engine-later-this-year/#continued">below</a>.<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/02/14/ram-1500-to-get-v6-turbodiesel-engine-later-this-year/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ram 1500 to get V6 diesel engine later this year</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/02/14/ram-1500-to-get-v6-turbodiesel-engine-later-this-year/">Ram 1500 to get V6 diesel engine later this year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 14 Feb 2013 10:15:00 EST. <br />
<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mahindra-pik-up/#3"><img hspace="0" vspace="4" align="right" border="1" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/11/mahindra-pick-large_250.jpg" /></a>No, you're not looking at yet another voting map, or even a topographical depiction of the WalMarting of America (trust us, you <a href="http://www.walmartstoremap.com/">don't want to see that</a>). The image seen above is that of Mahindra's "dealership network." We're putting quotes on that because the Indian automaker says on its website that the dots represent only "potential" outlets for their <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/07/u-s-mahindra-pickup-reportedly-stalled-until-february/?extpar=autob">forthcoming small diesel pickup trucks</a>.<br />
<br />
Even if the map hasn't been finalized (and doesn't have an associated time frame for each franchise coming on-line), the map is interesting because it illustrates widespread interest in the brand. Credit for that in part should go to the promise of a robust, cheap, and fuel-efficient small truck from a major global player - but it should be equally predictable because there are lots of showrooms sitting empty (or on their way to doing so) thanks to the downsizing of dealer networks associated with General Motors, Chrysler and other automakers. <br />
<br />
We could have predicted widespread traction for the brand in regions like the Midwest and even the Northeast, but the concentration of likely franchises in Florida surprises us. Either way, we'll have to wait a bit longer to see just who finally ends up selling the automaker's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/10/appalachian-breakdown-mahindra-reportedly-dumps-regional-pickup/">TR20 and TR40 models</a> - they are expected to go on sale in the first quarter of next year. <em>Hat tip to Sunny B!</em><br />

<div align="center"><em><strong><small>2009 BMW 335d - Click above for high-res gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />Just the other day, Volkswagen revealed that it is having <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/04/13/vw-forecasts-30-of-2010-golf-sales-in-u-s-will-be-for-tdi/">little trouble selling diesel versions of the Jetta</a> here in the United States. Fellow German automakers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz, however, apparently aren't finding the oil-burning road quite so easy to traverse. A new study by PACE might have some answers as to why. It seems that only 35% of those surveyed are willing to consider today's latest clean diesel powerplants, and that figure is made up mostly of expensive luxury car and full-size pickup truck owners. Why? We'd say it's mostly a perception problem.<br /><br />According to Bryan Krulikowski, the man who authored the PACE study, "While the perceptions of diesel have changed for the better, consideration of clean diesel vehicles is hampered by the high cost of diesel fuel compared to gasoline." Further, "some consumers recall diesels of the past and have not yet experienced or accepted the improved diesel technology available today," he said. As a final nail in the consumer consideration coffin, many new car buyers aren't yet convinced that exhaust aftertreatment systems that rely on urea will be a foolproof way to control emissions.<br /><br />From where we sit, that's something of a shame. As we've found in our own tests of modern vehicles like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/09/in-the-autobloggreen-garage-2009-volkswagen-jetta-tdi/">Jetta TDI</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/10/review-2009-bmw-335d-proves-efficient-dynamics-is-more-entert/">BMW 335d</a>, the diesel engine has completely shed its old rough-idling, smoky and stinky ways in favor of smooth running, plateau-like torque curves and class-leading fuel efficiency.<br /><br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/15/study-diesel-sales-still-limited-in-u-s-by-buyer-perceptions/#poll29169">View Poll</a></p><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-2009-bmw-335d">Review: 2009 BMW 335d</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-2009-bmw-335d/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/000_bmw335d_review_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-2009-bmw-335d/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/002_bmw335d_review_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-2009-bmw-335d/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/001_bmw335d_review_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-2009-bmw-335d/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/003_bmw335d_review_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-2009-bmw-335d/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/004_bmw335d_review_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.thedetroitbureau.com/2009/04/diesel-engine-growth-in-the-united-states-remains-constrained-by-buyer-perceptions/">The Detroit Bureau</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/15/study-diesel-sales-still-limited-in-u-s-by-buyer-perceptions/">STUDY: Diesel sales still limited in U.S. by buyer perceptions [w/POLL]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 15 Apr 2009 12:30:00 EST. Up until today, we've been referring to the new truck as the Appalachian, though <a href="http://www.pickuptrucks.com/html/news/mahindra/mahindra-pickup-spied-looking-for-new-name.html">reports</a> now indicate that it will drop that moniker. Apparently, the Indian company wants to highlight its own name in an effort to build some much-needed brand recognition in a market it has never played in before. For that reason, some sort of nondescript name made from numbers and/or letters is to be expected.<br /><br />Mahindra's newly un-named truck will feature a new four-cylinder diesel engine produced just for the States with help from Bosch and AVL. Power output should hover around 150 horses, though torque is expected to be a massive 300 lb-ft. Coupled with what should be reasonable fuel economy from just 2.2 liters of displacement, we think that Mahindra's new pickup could re-ignite the compact pickup market in no time at all. At least one domestic brand might be thinking the same thing, as this spy shot indicates that one of Detroit's finest brought one over for testing. <br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.pickuptrucks.com/html/news/mahindra/mahindra-pickup-spied-looking-for-new-name.html">PickupTrucks.com</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/14/mahindras-diesel-pickup-drops-appalachian-name/">Mahindra's diesel pickup drops 'Appalachian' name</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sat, 14 Jun 2008 17:22:00 EST.
