Clunkbucket.com's head wrench, the inimitable Mike Bumbeck, has posted a great photo feature on what might be motorsports' best new addition - Auto Soccer. Imagine taking everything you love about demolition derby and throwing in heaping handfuls of soccer, including a repurposed propane tank that now serves as a 400-pound ball. Needless to say, hilarity and carnage ensues.

As it happens, Auto Soccer recently descended upon Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, and Bumbeck was there to catch all the action. As you might have guessed, Auto Soccer is rife with collisions as player-drivers try to get the ball across the field and into the proper goal. Of course, in addition to the frequent contact between cars, that hefty ball does its fair share of damage to the participating vehicles itself. Head immediately to Clunckbucket for Mike's man-on-the-scene reporting and images of the aftermath. Looks like a quality Friday night to us.
What the government seems to have forgotten is that many cars, hobbling and sputtering as they near death, prefer to make one final trip to the local county fair (assuming they escape a 24 Hours of LeMons team). There, stripped of glass and with fuel tanks moved safely inward, the clunkers die an honorable death smashed gloriously to pieces in front of large (and often well-hydrated), cheering crowds.

"Obama is an anti-demo-derby guy," says Tory Schutte, head of the Demolition Derby Drivers Association. "He's targeting the cars we've been using." (But let's not just blame the President. Scrap metal prices have skyrocketed in the past two years, so many last-leg heaps are heading straight to the junkyard for recycling.) According to those who keep track of such things, there were 3,500 demolition derbies in the U.S. last year. The orchestrated pageantry of bent steel, blown radiators, and dislodged wheels is often the main draw at local county fairs... and the drivers prefer to keep it that way.

[Source: Time | Image: Illinois State Fair]
REPORT: Cash for Clunkers leads to shortage of destruction derby cars. You get the best freakin' demolition derby ever, in which the participants harvest record crops of awesome with every smash.

This, in a nutshell, is the thing of beauty otherwise known as the Washington Combine Demolition Derby. 2008's combine carnage is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, and we have never wanted to attend something more in our entire lives. Even if we don't go, at least we can still score ourselves a t-shirt or hat. How this hasn't yet been turned into a top-selling video game is beyond our comprehension -- we'd put down Prologue for this if it had online play.
