UPDATE: This Kickstarter campaign has been shut down due to copyright disputes over the original images used to create the Blackprints.

We enjoy highlighting artists who turn their brushes, lenses or whatever medium they fancy towards the four-wheeled things in life. San Francisco-based artist Sabrina Chun has done just that with her series called Blackprints: Car Designs Reimagined, which is currently enjoying an overabundance of funding on Kickstarter.

In the series, Chun has taken eight iconic autos and created inverse black-and-white profile views of each. The cars include the Porsche 911, '67 Mustang GT500, Shelby Cobra, Lamborghini Countach, Volkswagen Microbus, Ford Model T and pop culture icons like the Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters and the DeLorean from Back to the Future.

The prints will be available in two sizes, mini (6x9 inches) and jumbo (24x38 inches), and they're printed on 80-pound card stock made of recycled paper using environmentally friendly soybean-based ink and solvent. What's more, this is some very reasonably priced art; a pledge of just $34 or more will get you all eight mini prints, while a pledge of $139 or more scores you all eight jumbos.

If you'll indulge us donning our art critic hats for a moment, what we like about Chun's Blackprints is not only the fact that she's chosen eight excellent cars to feature, but the works will hang equally well on the wall of a garage or living room. They seem so simple, but you'll soon lose track of time staring at features you've never noticed before that only reveal themselves in the light of Chun's negative spaces.

Fans of the Back to the Future trilogy will be pleased to learn that Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown's modified 1981 DeLorean DMC-12, better known as a time machine, is on display at Universal Studios Hollywood in California after a painstaking museum-quality restoration over the past year. While Universal used a handful of cars during filming from 1985 to 1990, this particular vehicle is referred to as the "Hero A" car, as it was the only Delorean featured in all three films.

The Time Machine Restoration Team was tasked with bringing the car back to its original state during its first appearance in Back to the Future, complete with its plutonium-powered flux capacitor (later versions were modified to develop power for time travel from lightning and garbage). From what we can tell, the team's work appears flawless.

While we are still waiting for the official announcement from Universal regarding the project, the team has put up a slick teaser video that you can watch below and has posted a bunch of pictures on its Facebook page. Enthusiast of the films or not, both are worthy of a closer look.

Continue reading Restored Back to the Future DeLorean arrives at Universal Studios [w/video]

Restored Back to the Future DeLorean arrives at Universal Studios [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 17 Feb 2013 19:00:00 EST.
Our favorite DeLorean-turned-hovercraft is back. The Kickstarter-funded project was originally the brainchild of grad student Matthew Riese, and the last time we saw it, the floating car was busily hovering around McCovey Cove in San Francisco. This time, Riese's creation has taken to bombing beaches down by the Golden Gate Bridge. The video below shows the hand-built machine busting along the bay before taking to land for a quick flat spin. We can't convey how badly we want to operate this thing. We'd even find ourselves a Michael J. Fox-spec puffy vest for the occasion.

You mean to tell me you created a time machine... out of Lego bricks?

So, we may have taken a bit of poetic license with that line, but still - as a group of automotive-obsessed children of the '80s, there could hardly be a better toy with which to relive our childhoods than a Lego Back to the Future DeLorean Time Machine. Pay special attention to the mini Marty and Doc Brown figures, which include costumes from all three movies, a skateboard, hoverboard and <strike>life preserver</strike> red vest.

The BTTF kit, originally submitted at the Lego Cuusoo user-submitted design site, passed through a lengthy review process by Lego before being approved for production. One of the designers, Masashi Togami, is a part-time contractor for the Lego Cuuso site and will donate his one-percent royalty to a worthy cause: the Michael J. Fox foundation for Parkinson's Research.

Pricing and the date of availability aren't yet available, but a video detailing the Cuuso review process and the DeLorean time machine can be seen below.
Continue reading Lego will offer Back to the Future DeLorean set in 2013 [w/video]

Lego will offer Back to the Future DeLorean set in 2013 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 23 Dec 2012 12:57:00 EST.
Since first hearing about the restoration project to bring the Back to the Future DeLorean DMC-12 time machine back to life, we haven't heard that much about the progress. The project was supposed to be "concluded" over the summer, but it turns out finding original parts or creating all new ones for a fictional time machine isn't as easy as it sounds... actually, it doesn't even sound that easy.

As an update for the museum-quality restoration being given to the neglected "A car" from the original BTTF movie, Bob Gale, co-writer and producer of the movie trilogy, shows us some of the painstaking work that goes into bringing such an iconic movie car back to life.

Joe Walser and Terry Matalas have led the restoration team, which has completely disassembled Doc Brown's DeLorean, and are working to rebuild the car from the ground up. This includes redoing the interior, all of the electronics (with the critical flux capacitor) and even the car's signature stainless steel body parts. One of the remade pieces includes the metal receptacle in which plutonium was placed to get the required 1.21 "jiggawatts" of power to make time travel possible; this was the original time machine, so no Mr. Fusion here.

This is Cooper. Cooper has awesome parents. Cooper's parents made his stroller/push-car into the time-traveling DeLorean from Back to the Future. Yes, we are very jealous of this tot.

According to his mother Cory, who published pics of her son's awesome costume and matching car on Flickr, the inspiration was from a vest. From the gallery's description: "It all started with a red puffy vest Cooper already had and a side comment from my husband about Marty McFly in late September. I've always loved Back to the Future, and love cars since I was little and grew up going to car shows with my Dad"

The process started with a $25 Step2 push car. From there, Cory spent several weekends and weeknights throughout October creating a DeLorean out of cardboard, tape and paint. The final step was the application of electroluminescent wiring by Cory's husband, Jeremy, to create the DeLorean from Back to the Future: Part II (note the hover wheels and "Mr. Fusion").

He may be too young now to fully appreciate the unrivaled incredibleness of this Halloween costume, but hopefully Cooper will look back with fondness one day on the effort taken by his parents to build this terrific tribute to BTTF.
Parents create cardboard DeLorean for son's amazing Back to the Future Halloween costume originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 19:15:00 EST.
If you have a geeky bone in your body and haven't read Ready Player One, stop reading this right now and get your hands on a copy. Author Ernest Cline has created an amazing universe within the story by drawing on some of the best elements of both science fiction and fantasy genres, along with '80s pop culture. From Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica and Firefly to Dungeons and Dragons, Ladyhawke and classic Atari games, Cline leaves no stone unturned. The plot centers around an eccentric billionaire who creates a virtual reality, game-based version of the Internet.

When he dies, the billionaire leaves his entire fortune and a controlling stake in his company to one player who can find an Easter Egg hidden in the vast virtual universe. Cline wanted to do something similar in promoting Ready Player One, so he hid a URL within the text. That URL led to a specially created Atari game, which in turn allowed winners to participate in another game. Those who completed that challenge were met with one final task: set a new world record in one of a handful of classic '80s videogames.

Surprisingly enough, it took a player just eight days to set a new record on Joust (the first challenge in the novel) and win the keys to the grand prize: a DeLorean DMC-12. Cline himself is a big DeLorean fan, having purchased one himself as transportation on his nationwide book tour. He then turned around and bought a second example to give away in the contest. Scroll down to watch a video of Cline being interviewed on G4TV before handing over the keys to the winner.
Continue reading Author of Ready Player One gives away DeLorean via book 'Easter Egg' contest [w/video]

Author of Ready Player One gives away DeLorean via book 'Easter Egg' contest [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 12:45:00 EST.
There are an abundance of modifications available for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV, but few are excellent as the example found in the video below. A fan of both the car-thieving game series and the Back to the Future movie franchise managed to bring his two loves together by crafting a Marty McFly skin for game's Niko character. That's hardly impressive, but whipping up an accurate recreation of Doc Brown's time-travelling DeLorean DMC-12 in the game is something else entirely. YouTube user seedyrom34 has developed a detailed vehicle skin complete with an interior with a working flux capacitor.

That's not all, either. The car features a working keypad for punching in dates and times. When the car has plutonium and the time circuits are active, the player can "time travel" on command, laying down two streaks of fire and jumping into the future or past in the process. Please excuse our geekgasm.

If you like what you see and consider yourself a GTA modder of adequate skill, the YouTube description even gives you a few hints as to how you can execute similar work. Check out the video of the mod in action below.

Continue reading Rabid fan creates perfect Back to the Future mod for GTA IV

Rabid fan creates perfect Back to the Future mod for GTA IV originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 29 Aug 2012 16:58:00 EST.
What's better than any Back to the Future tribute DeLorean? This. Because hovercraft.

And thanks to the guys at Deadspin, we can present video of it frolicking in McCovey Cove outside last night's Giants/Rockies game. As Deadspin reports, the DeLorean hovercraft's build was Kickstarter-funded and previously covered by MAKE. The finished product, which you can watch in action below, is fantastic.
Continue reading DeLorean hovercraft shows up in McCovey Cove

DeLorean hovercraft shows up in McCovey Cove originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 11 Aug 2012 09:49:00 EST.
Police in Los Angeles have impounded rapper Will.i.am's custom car. The recording artist was reportedly driving the gullwing coupe around the city with no license plate. When officers stopped the Black Eyed Peas frontman and checked the registration, they found an issue and sent the car to lockup. Will.i.am was cited for both the registration issue and failing to display a license plate, but was otherwise cooperative. A friend drove him from the scene. Police say the vehicle will be held until the proper paperwork can be organized.

As you may recall, the car, shown above, is the first from Will.I.am's new company, IAMAUTO. The prototype creation is understood to use pieces borrowed a donor Delorean and a Dodge Challenger and was built by the team at West Coast Customs. Will.i.am hopes to start serial production of the car near where he grew up in Los Angeles as a way to give jobs back to his hard luck community.
Will.i.am gets his unplated "Delorean" impounded originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Jun 2012 17:31:00 EST.
A lot of things go down when a high-profile company is in high-profile trouble - unlikely entities can arrive with unexpected sums of money and take the company in unpredicatble directions. Such was the case with DeLorean Motor Car - which is still in business in Texas - when the business, headquartered in Detroit and building cars in Ireland, was taken over by the Russian emigrant who founded discount retail stores Big Lots and Odd Lots.

Hemmings Blog has the tale of how Sol Shenk rescued a bankrupt DMC from the banks in 1982 after John Z. DeLorean's arrest. Shenk already had experience in the specialty car business having bought the bankrupt hulk of Malcolm Bricklin's car company and taken over the parts distribution business. Shenk set DMC and its inventory up in a Columbus, Ohio building on Dublin Avenue that had housed turn-of-the-century carmakers, hoping to make the most of a brand that still had clout.

Obviously, that didn't happen. From his corn-belt HQ, Shenk was able to have more cars built in Ireland and sell most of them and the inventory, as well as offering a gold-plated DMC-12 for a Big Lots giveaway. But he couldn't run the company and sell the cars at a profit, which led to him selling what remained and all the rights to the owners of the new Texas DeLorean Motor Company.

Said the VP of that company of the Columbus address, "When the BlueJackets [hockey team -ed.] came to Columbus, the Dublin Avenue address became much more expensive, and we moved all the inventory to a new facility in our hometown just outside Houston." Head over to Hemmings to read the whole story.
The story of when DeLorean moved to Columbus, OH originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 21 May 2012 08:28:00 EST.
First announced last October, the reborn, all-electric Delorean has made a surprise appearance at the New York Auto Show this year. It's a surprise because not even Delorean Motor Company president Stephen Wynne knew he was going to be here until a few weeks ago, when show organizers called with an invite.

With a prime spot near the EV ride along track - the DMCev is sadly not involved - Wynne said he's been getting good attention, even though said track is in the basement. We asked Wynne what's been going on with the car since last fall's announcement and the short answer is that this is one EV concept that's going into production.

The target date for fans to buy the DMCev is early 2013, but a lot has to happen between now and then. Right now, all the company has is the converted DMC-12 to show off the technology. To create this, the designers had to add 200 pounds of stuff, and the production version is going to be either the same weight as the gas version, or a few pounds less, in order to improve both performance and range. The car is powered by a 32-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack and has a 125 mile per hour top speed with a range of 100 miles. Published specs claim a 0-60 time of 4.9 seconds, but Wynne said the target is now under six seconds. Price for all this fun? $95,000.

DMC will assemble the car in Houston, TX with a lot of help from Louisiana's Epic EV, the company working on the Torq and Amp vehicles (not the Amp conversions). These two companies are testing different motor/inverter combinations for the electric Delorean, and Wynne said they are looking for a "proven product" from a company that has at least "several hundred" units on the road. The current prototype also uses a DC motor, but the production will use AC for better range, performance and regenerative braking ability. The old-school dashboard is also due for an upgrade

Those are the details we could glean in New York. Can you believe we made it through this entire post without a Back To The Future reference? The DMCev can't do it, though, with a license plate that reads "Gas? Where we're going we don't need gas" and a battery that carries the "Flux Power" nickname. For more, you can watch a video of Translogic going for a ride in the DMCev down below, where you'll also find a related press release.
Continue reading Delorean Electric surprises in New York, will cost $95,000 in 2013

Delorean Electric surprises in New York, will cost $95,000 in 2013 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 Apr 2012 11:01:00 EST.
The mantra of the builder of this R/C DeLorean replica from Back to the Future is: "куда мы идем, нам не нужны дороги." According to Google Translate, that's Russian for, "Where we're going, we don't need roads." Appropriate, eh?

With a painted foamcore body and blue LEDs, this Mr. Fusion-equipped DMC-12 sits on a quadrotor platform and is powered by a distinctly non-nuclear lithium-polymer battery juicing four motors, a speed controller and stabilizer. While no plutonium is required, this homebuilt's cool is practically radioactive. Check it out after the jump.
Continue reading R/C flying DeLorean drone doesn't need roads

R/C flying DeLorean drone doesn't need roads originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Mar 2012 12:30:00 EST. We've seen plenty of Back to the Future DeLorean DMC-12 replicas pass through the halls of the internet. In that time, we've always assumed the original movie car was tucked away safely in a museum somewhere. As it turns out, that wasn't the case. Of all the vehicles created for the three films, the most detailed hero car, otherwise known as the A Car, was left on display outside. The ensuing years of suffering in the elements weren't kind to the DMC-12, and Bob Gale, co-writer for the BTTF saga, is now working to have the vehicle completely restored to its original condition.

Joe Walser, J Ryan and Terry Matalas are currently working to get the car back to its former glory, but the project needs help. The craftsmen may not need roads where they're going, but they do need anyone with photos of the original A Car or parts from any of the movie DeLorean models to reach out via TimeMachineRestoration@gmail.com or the restoration's Facebook page. This electric DeLorean is just a prototype, but our sister publication, Translogic got to take it for a spin and found that a 260-horsepower electric motor finally makes the DMC-12 the sports car everyone has always wanted it to be. While we get to see plenty of footage of the car lapping Houston Motorsports Park, this episode also includes an interview with DeLorean Motor Company CEO Stephen Wynne.

While we don't want to give too much away, Wynne discusses future plans for the Texas-based DeLorean restorer and remanufacturer, which include bringing the electric DeLorean to market. Wynne tells Translogic that the car is expected to sell for between $95,000-$100,000. The car is said to have a 100-mile range, which would make it roughly equivalent to the Nissan Leaf, but with far more performance - not to mention its iconic time machine looks.

With all the negative publicity some pundits have heaped upon electric vehicles as of late, we wonder if perhaps this is the car to change their minds about EVs? See Translogic's full experience with the electric DeLorean in the video after the jump.
Continue reading Translogic takes DeLorean DMC-EV for a spin

Translogic takes DeLorean DMC-EV for a spin originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Jan 2012 11:30:00 EST.
Two bits of automotive movie history at a Profiles in History auction held earlier this month have drawn massive bids from collectors. As you may recall, Steve McQueen's racing suit costume from Le Mans was poised to go under the gavel with the auction house estimating the Gulf Oil suit would fetch between $200,000 and $300,000. Hemmings says that by the time the last bid came in, the suit had fetched a staggering $984,000, thereby proving that when it comes to celebrity auctions, few names can draw dollar bills quite like McQueen. The actor's Porsche 911, which he drove in the film, recently sold for $1.25 million.

McQueen's Le Mans suit wasn't the only big draw, however. The same auction also saw a DeLorean DMC-12 used in the filming of Back to the Future III pull sizable bids of its own. The flux-capacitor-equipped gullwing met the auction house's estimates with a towering final bid of $541,200. Great Scot, indeed.
Steve McQueen's Le Mans suit fetches nearly $1M, BTTF DeLorean $541k originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Dec 2011 10:30:00 EST.
There are reported to be just three surviving Back to the Future Delorean DMC-12 movie cars left in existence, and only one of those is held in a private collection. Next month, you'll have a chance to take it home. One of the stainless-steel wonders used in Back to the Future III is headed to the Profiles in History auction block. The Icons of Hollywood auction will feature a litany of items from the trilogy, including the vest worn by Michael J. Fox's character Marty McFly and a remote-control hoverboard. This has the makings of the best Halloween costume ever.

According to the auction house, the DMC-12 was used in 1955 drive-in move scene where Marty heads off into the Old West. The vehicle was built specifically for off-road use, though the auction doesn't specify exactly what sort of modifications were made to the gullwing machine to handle bouncing through the desert sand. The auction house expects the vehicle to roll away with a winning bid between $400,000 and $600,000. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading On the Block: Back to the Future III DeLorean up for auction

On the Block: Back to the Future III DeLorean up for auction originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 Nov 2011 18:31:00 EST.
The electric DeLorean DMC-12 is coming 2013, so says Humble, Texas' reborn DeLorean Motor Company. That was the shocking announcement made by DeLorean in mid-October at the DMC Texas Open House.

But what else occurred on that mid-October day? Well, apparently a handful of DeLorean enthusiasts got to test drive DMC's electric prototype. Now, we can't say for certain whether this clip shows DMC's own electric version of the DMC-12 or the work of some shadetree mechanic, but we can say with confidence that DMC's Cameron Wynne (son of Stephen Wynne, owner of DeLorean) is the one who is driving the electric vehicle around the track.

Dubbed the DMCEV-12, DeLorean claims this electric time machine hits 60 miles per hour in a quick 4.9 seconds and warps to a top speed of 125 mph, though we'll have to wait to hear more about total range. Reports suggest the limited production DMCEV-12 will retail for approximately $100,000.

Given the car's iconic classic/futuristic status, it's no surprise that the DeLorean DMC-12 is a popular car for DIY electric car conversions. That an honest-to-goodness official DeLorean EV is coming from Humble, Texas' reborn DeLorean Motor Company itself, though? That we did not see coming. It makes sense, though. If you're gonna build a <strike>time machine</strike> electric car, why not do it with some style?

Announced Friday night at the DMC Texas Open House, DMC said it plans to work with electric car startup Epic EV to get an all-electric DMC-12 into production by 2013. Epic is the company started by Aptera co-founder Chris Anthony that is working on the Torq and Amp vehicles (and some rather clever videos). Early reports say the Electric DeLorean will have a maximum speed of 125 miles per hour and offer 260 horsepower for something like $90,000-100,000. The gullwing doors should remain, but we're not sure where the motor will go (the original DeLorean used a rear-mounted engine), let alone the battery pack. This isn't the first time a DeLorean with an alternative powertrain has been talked about. Before his death in 2005, John DeLorean hinted that a hydraulic hybrid drivetrain might find a home in a relaunched DMC-12. That never happened, of course.

Specific technical details on the upcoming DeLorean Electric are sparse, but we're pretty sure it will be able to recharge its 1.21 gigawatt-hour battery instantly when connected to the right power source. You know, until the inevitable Mr. Fusion model gets the green light.

Get out your lightning rods and Sony Walkmans, this is going to be fun to watch.
Great Scot!
Our favorite cars from when we were younger aren't always the exciting machines we expect them to be. Matt Farah and Dan Neil decided to explore this idea on a recent episode of The Car Show. Neil picked a Ferrari 308 GTS while Farah went with the gullwing-wearing DeLorean DMC-12. Both are sports cars from an older era, and serve as perfect examples of misplaced idolatry.

Each host provided a modern machine to use in a drag race against the older vehicles. Lining up at the strip in his 308, Neil faced down Farah who piloted a 2010 Toyota Camry SE. To combat Farah's DeLorean, Neil called a 2010 Toyota Sienna SE into action.

We won't spoil the results, but you can probably guess which vehicles wound up victorious. Still, it makes for an amusing video, which you can watch after the jump.
Continue reading The Car Show pits Ferrari 308 vs. Toyota Camry, DeLorean vs. Toyota Sienna

The Car Show pits Ferrari 308 vs. Toyota Camry, DeLorean vs. Toyota Sienna originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 09 Sep 2011 19:59:00 EST.
