Exotic automakers from Italy come and go, and some are missed more than others. But while names like Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini have remained constant throughout, others have risen and fallen. Bugatti was one such example - revived temporarily by Italian investors before Volkswagen stepped in to bring it back to Alsace - but another is De Tomaso.

Founded (not unlike Pagani) by an Argentine-Italian in Modena, but way back in 1959, De Tomaso produced legendary sports cars like the Vallelunga, Mangusta and of course the Pantera. It even owned Maserati and Moto Guzzi for a time, but it eventually petered off into bankruptcy. Along came a certain Gian Mario Rossignolo - a veteran auto exec in Italy - to scoop up what was left of the company in 2008.

The revival led to the debut of the Deauville concept at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, but a lack of interest and funds led to the program being sold to a Chinese automaker which appears to have done little with it. Meanwhile it looked for a time that Rossignolo was planning to continue development of a new Pantera, but those plans have reportedly lost momentum as the outfit struggled without enough capital to even pay its workers.

The most astute readers may recall Rossignolo's name coming up in the news about a month ago as well, when his other business - Prototipo SpA - sold the Nardo Technical Centre to Porsche. Whether the proceeds from that sale end up giving Rossignolo enough to pay his staff and possibly turn the Pantera program around, however, or if they'll only prove sufficient to repay his debts, remains to be seen.
De Tomaso down for the count originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 10 May 2012 18:01:00 EST.
The world would be a much happier place with a little more De Tomaso Mangusta. The Pantera predecessor featured sexy Italian styling, Ford V8 power and properly scary handling. Only 401 units were built between 1967 and 1971, making the gull-wing machine a proper unicorn for any collector of Italian absurdities.

One designer and illustrator has taken it upon himself to envision what a modern interpretation of the Mangusta might look like. The result is the Mangusta Legacy. Maxime de Keiser wanted to preserve the vehicle's low-slung, wide stance and give the Legacy an "impression of wild ferocity."

We like the sound of that.

The illustrator's design sketches and renderings look top notch. With its aggressive side air inlets, fiercely-raked windshield and pop-up rear wing, the machine looks like it could roll off of a production line any second. We dig it. Head over to CarBodyDesign for a closer look.
Mangusta Legacy Concept just as badass as the original originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 30 Dec 2011 11:01:00 EST.
We all got a little excited when news emerged that De Tomaso was being reborn. After all, what could it hurt to have another storied Italian exotic automaker in the world, right? But then came the Deauville.

Though the Pininfarina-penned shape wasn't exactly hate-worthy, the emergence of a crossover to revive the De Tomaso marque was rather disappointing. The architect of the company's revival, veteran auto exec Gian Mario Rossignolo, promised more exciting products to come, but nearly a year later we've yet to see anything more.

This latest development could come as good news, then, even if it seems bad at first. Rossignolo has reportedly sold the rights to the Deauville's production to a Chinese company. Considering that it has, for the time being, been the only product De Tomaso has shown, that would seem to mean the entire house of cards has come crashing down. But, looking at it another way, Rossignolo and company have just managed to raise some 12 million euros (over $15 million) to (hopefully) finance the production of the Pantera, all the while offloading the burden of the lackluster Deauville at the same time.
De Tomaso sells Deauville production rights to China originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 30 Dec 2011 07:59:00 EST.
Let us tell you how this works, De Tomaso: First you give us the supercar, then you dilute the brand with crossovers and city cars and such. Got it? Just ask Porsche or Aston Martin. Oh never mind - we'll just take the sportscar now.

Half a year after reviving the brand, inexplicably, with the Deauville concept, rumor has it that De Tomaso is getting ready to unveil a Pantera successor at September's upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show.

The new supercar - which revives the nameplate of the 70s classic pictured above - is said to weigh less than 1,200 kilograms (2,645 pounds), which, coupled to a 600-horsepower Chevrolet Corvette V8, ought to dial-in some blistering performance.

The spy video we brought you a couple of months ago certainly looked - and sounded - promising, but we'll have to wait until September to see how the finished product turns out.
De Tomaso to unveil new Pantera at Frankfurt originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 12 Jul 2011 10:31:00 EST.
There are some things in this world that, no matter how many there are, we can never get quite enough. Like sleep. Or Victoria's Secret lingerie models. (Or ideally, a combination of the two.) And of course, mid-engined Italian supercars.

The next expected to join the fold is De Tomaso. The long-dormant marque has been revived by former Fiat executive Gian Mario Rossignolo, but as for its first debut - the Deauville crossover - let's just say it's not what we were looking forward to most. No, that role will be filled by the revival of De Tomaso's most iconic model: the Pantera.

The new supercar is expected to debut in the fall at the Los Angeles Auto Show, which means development must be well under way by now. Exhibit A: the video after the jump, which shows a barely-disguised prototype rolling out of De Tomaso's headquarters in Modena, Italy. It looks the part and certainly sounds it, as well. But don't take our word for it - follow the jump to watch the short spy clip for yourself.
Continue reading De Tomaso's new Pantera spied leaving Modena factory

De Tomaso's new Pantera spied leaving Modena factory originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 May 2011 13:59:00 EST.
The De Tomaso Deauville concept debuted at the Geneva Motor Show to mostly disappointed reactions. Even if it wasn't a re-dressed Cadillac SRX, it would be tough for anything to live up to the spectacular and long-running Pantera that DeTomaso is most commonly known for.

If you're concerned that the new De Tomaso will descend the rat hole of unattractive milquetoast cars, fear not! The Pantera will be back. According to Pistonheads, De Tomaso will bring a new Pantera to the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. No further details are forthcoming, but it's a glimmer of hope for enthusiasts.
SLS or SLC? Neither. De Tomaso has pulled back the Geneva Motor Show wraps on its all-new model, and the four-door shall be known, officially, as the Deauville. If you're experiencing a bit of déjà vu, that's because the Italian automaker is resurrecting that particular moniker from its 1970s catalog, when it was attached to a much svelter creature than this rather odd looking sedan.

The five-passenger aluminum chassis'd sedan features a 2.8-liter turbocharged V6 under the hood producing 300-horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque from 2,000 to 5,000 rpm. Gear shifts are handled courtesy of a six-speed automatic transmission and power is sent out to all four wheels. The powertrain combination propels the Deauville to a limited top speed of 155 miles per hour, and helps it make the run from 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds. Not too shabby for a sedan that weighs 4,078 pounds.

Here we are, just days before the doors open at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, and De Tomaso has unleashed a series of images along with a few more salient details of its new SLC concept car. Well, actually, De Tomaso is now referring to the machine as the SLS (and no, it has nothing to do with the Mercedes-Benz of the same name), which stands for Sport Luxury Sedan, as opposed to SLC, or Sport Luxury Crossover.

Fret not, Benz fans (and trademark lawyers). De Tomaso says it will give its future production model a new name that will be announced in Geneva.

Irrational naming conventions aside, what we have here is a somewhat high-riding humpback machine not unlike the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo. According to the company, two engines are planned at launch, a 300-horsepower V6 and a 550-horsepower V8. Power is sent to all four wheels, and a diesel engine option is planned for a later time.

De Tomaso plans to build two more vehicles on the same architecture with the goal of selling a total of 8,000 units per year. We're hoping to hear more about the marque's future plans after we hit the ground in Geneva. In the meantime, feel free to peruse our high-res image gallery below and read the awkwardly translated press release after the break.

Now here's a question worth racking your precious brain over. If you were asked to choose between the recently unveiled De Tomaso SLC Concept and a BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo, which would you park in your driveway? If you chose a used Audi RS6 Avant, congratulations, you just made our holiday card list.

Still, it's difficult not to draw comparisons between the recently unveiled De Tomaso and the awkwardly-proportioned 5-Series family hauler. Both vehicles have managed to meld the crossover and sedan realms in a way that few other vehicles have.

While we've already been privy to a few photos of the De Tomaso SLC Concept, a video of the vehicle has now made its way to the internets. The quick clip gives us a slightly better look at what the vehicle will bring to the table when it gets an official unveil early next month at the Geneva Motor Show. Here's hoping it looks better in the flesh. Hit the jump to have a look-see of your very own.

Behold, the De Tomaso SLC Concept in all of its, um, glory. If you're like us, this probably wasn't the first thing that leapt to mind when you heard that De Tomaso was being resurrected (again) from the ashes of bankruptcy for a triumphant return to the world stage. The company says that the SLC is a luxury sports crossover.

Despite its stubby and somewhat odd proportions, this thing should be a blast to drive. According to reports, under the hood sits a 524-horsepower V8 engine, though buyers should be able to also opt for either a 296-horsepower V6 or a 247-horsepower turbodiesel six-pot should their hearts - or wallets - so desire.

De Tomaso says that the SLC Concept will bow at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show next month and that we can expect a production run of around 3,000 units starting next year. The price tag for this fine piece of machinery is expected to sit at a cool €85,000 - around $115k Yankee bucks. Better start saving your milk money.

If you were hoping to see something more along the lines of the infamous Pantera, never fear. Word is that the company is also hard at work on a spiritual successor to that beast along with a four-door sedan designed to tango with the Porsche Panamera. Check out the link below for more images.

We've heard the rumors, and now we have a small series of spy photos that seem to corroborate the hearsay. Looks like De Tomaso is indeed readying at least one concept car to show off at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

We can't say for certain that the machine seen in these photos is the BMW X6-like crossover that has been talked about - in fact, it looks more sedan or wagon-like, but at least it appears to be proof that something is in the works. Current conjecture has this car will be called SLC.

Whatever the case, we can clearly see De Tomaso's new logo, along with some sensuous, flowing curves that piques our curiousity. See for yourself in our image gallery below.

For those who may not have noticed, Italy is ready to get a new automaker... back. The name's De Tomaso, and if you're up on your car history, you'll recognize it as the father of classics such as the Pantera and Mangusta. But after lying dormant for decades, the company has been rescued by Italian automotive industrialist Gian Mario Rossignolo. Under his direction, De Tomaso is expected to launch a new lineup. It's the dawn of a new era for the brand, and it has launched a new logo for its bright new future.

Replacing the old badge with the abstract T (far left) is a new icon (far right) that more clearly encompasses the D and the T in a more modern, muscular shape. It's the work of branding guru Peter Arnell, who recently took up the position of Chief Innovation Officer for the resurgent automaker. We're looking forward to seeing what it'll eventually adorn, with sources tipping a sports car, a luxury sedan, a sport 'ute, and most recently, a Mini rival. Whatever it is, expect a new De Tomaso to be unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

1974 De Tomaso Pantera L - Click above for image gallery

It's hard to imagine the automotive landscape without the wonder that is eBay Motors. Yes, we would probably be a little more productive without the ever-present temptation of thousands of rare and unique listings leading our web browsers astray, but we'd also never hear about cars like the 1974 De Tomaso Pantera L you see above. While any car with a 351 Cleveland V8 mounted amidships is usually enough to get our blood pumping, this particular example is something truly special. Why? It has a mere 135 miles on the clock.

Now, usually, a car that's traveled less than four miles a year since it was built would have all sorts of issues to contend with, but the seller claims to have taken care of most of those. The wheel bearings have all been broken down and repacked with new grease, the brake lines have been replaced, the carburetor has been rebuilt and the oil-pan gasket has been swapped for a new piece, and a slew of other services have been performed. There's no word on whether or not the fuel tank was dropped and cleaned, though.

Sound good? The 'Buy It Now' price is a lofty $139,500, and the car is located in Scotts Valley, California. We're not entirely sure we'd personally pony up that kind of cash (if we had it), but it's likely the best original Pantera that will ever be seen again. Check the auction here.

Between the Fiat 500 and the Alfa MiTo (to say nothing of the Lancia Ypsilon), Italy's got plenty of Mini rivals on the road. But it could gain another, if emerging reports prove accurate in the long run.

The rumors center around the revived De Tomaso. The dormant sportscar marque was recently acquired by one Gianmario Rossignolo, a former chief executive of Lancia who was previously linked to a take-over of Bertone. Rossignolo has some ambitious plans in place for his new company, acquiring a former Pininfarina factory in the Piedmont region of Italy, where he reportedly plans on building a line of sportscars, luxury sedans and sport-utes. Now reports suggest a premium hatchback to rival the Mini could be in the cards as well.

Any truth to it? Too soon to tell, but Rossignolo's De Tomaso is expected to debut something new in Geneva next year, so if we sit tight, we just might find out.

1996 DeTomaso Guarà - Click above for high-res image gallery

The DeTomaso Guarà was the last project of company founder and namesake, Alejandro de Tomaso. First shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 1993, the Guarà could be had as a closed-roof coupe or open-top barchetta. A more practical canvas-roof Spider was eventually added as well, but only five were ever made. The Guarà was based on the 1991 Maserati Barchetta Stradale concept and was built from 1993 through 2004, when the struggling Italian automaker went into liquidation.

During its production run, 10 to 12 Barchettas and about 50 Coupés were built, along with the handful of Spiders. The early cars, including all of the Spiders, were powered by a BMW 4.0-liter V8 putting out a modest 272 horsepower. Later cars, and all, um, two of the cars that have somehow found their way into America are powered by a 320-hp version of the Ford 4.6-liter V8 from the Mustang Cobra. The Guarà was made of fiberglass, Kevlar and other composites on an aluminum backbone, making it fairly light. Performance was decent with a 0-60 dash of about five seconds flat and a top speed quoted between 168 and 171 miles per hour for this 2,500-pound mid-engined sportscar.

The car's racecar-like pushrod suspension made it a bit of a handful to drive on city streets, but its handling limits were pretty high by all accounts. This particular car is in Woodland Hills, California, and is painted a perfect Modenese yellow. It has just 10,000 miles on the clock and is being offered at the princely sum of $100,000. That might seem like a lot of coin for a fairly anonymous exotic with a Mustang engine, but considering its rarity and its association with the name DeTomaso, it could be a fun addition to someone's collection. Are you listening Jay?

We're working off a machine-translated web page, so bear with us, but it looks like legendary Seventies marque De Tomaso is being resurrected once again. This time by a wealthy Italian industrialist named Gian Mario Rossingnolo. Looks like Signor Rossingnolo has already purchased a Pininfarina factory in which to build the new De Tomaso, and tried (unsuccessfully) to rescue Bertone earlier this year.

The big question is what are they going to build. Well, the ambitious-sounding-to-our-ears plan is to build 8,000 aluminum-bodied cars per year. And they are to be prestige cars, to better take advantage of the De Tomaso brand. As for specifics, Rossingnolo is planning on a luxury sedan, a coupe and an SUV. The cars should make an appearance at the Geneva Motor Show the year after next. Here's hoping one named Pantera shows up with Ford's supercharged 5.4-liter V8 mounted behind the driver.

American muscle. Italian design. Cadillac Allanté notwithstanding, that right there is a recipe for success. And few were ever as capable of straddling that divide with one foot in each of the best of both worlds as De Tomaso. Like modern-day Pagani, De Tomaso was founded by an Argentinean based in Modena, and the small automaker created some of the most exotic machinery of its day. Chief among them was the Mangusta - its Italian name means 'mongoose,' which might not seem as ferocious an animal to name a sportscar after as, say, a jaguar, viper or stingray, until you realize that the little rodents are known for eating cobras. Then the Mangusta's mission statement becomes a little clearer.

Like the later revival (which was subsequently sold under Qvale and then MG badges), to say nothing of its prey, the original Mangusta packed Ford V8 power: From 1967 through 1971, 400 Mangustas rolled out of the De Tomaso factory with 289s or 302s installed, out of which fewer than 200 are believed to still be around.

So it's not every day that one goes up for sale. And what you see here is no ordinary Mangusta, either. Its Boss 302 engine was retrofitted with race-spec cylinder heads and intake manifold sourced from Dan Gurney's legendary Eagle racer. The body, which comes on an original chassis separate from the engine in this eBay auction lot, has a touch of rust despite a restoration by celebrity garage Pino's Auto Body and it's painted Ferrari red. The stunning rosso exterior is complimented by a tan leather interior that even has a sterling-silver nameplate. This particular Mangusta once belonged to cosmetics heir and noted car collector Jack Nethercutt before passing into the hands of Vector founder Gerard Wiegert, giving this exceptional exotic an even more interesting pedigree. We could deal with the idea that the name might have to be changed to Panthera instead of Pantera, but basing the once Ford-powered classic on Lamborghini architecture as our source suggests would surely price the vehicle far out of reach for most of us. The Lamborghini Gallardo and the Audi R8 share similar underpinnings already, and these new rumors suggest that the Pantera re-dux would be based on the same platform and also pilfer the German-Italian V10 engine, which makes us wonder if the market is willing to accept three similar super cars, all with similar running gear and similar performance. Still, if the new car were to look as amazing as the renderings seen in our gallery, we wouldn't kick it out of our dream-garage.

Gallery: Panthera rendering

Gallery: DeTomaso Pantera at SEMA 2007

[Source: World Car Fans]
De Tomaso Pantera revival could be based on the Gallardo originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 31 Mar 2008 12:59:00 EST.
