You just never know what your dash cam is going to capture on an average day in Russia. Take these drivers, who were motoring along in the Russian city of Dyatkovo, minding their own business, when out of nowhere, an Opel Zafira took off like a 747 leaving LaGuardia.

Reports stemming from the incident claim that the driver lost control of his vehicle after its front-left tire blew. He then drove into oncoming traffic and crashed into a fence where the vehicle was launched high into the air, a rapidly escalating series of events caught on the video available below.

Unfortunately, we can't tell you that the driver miraculously escaped this remarkable accident with just cuts and bruises. The report translated from Russian tells us the 30-year-old driver died at the scene from his injuries, and his passenger is still being treated for life-threatening injuries at the Central Regional Hospital in Dyatkovo.
Continue reading Russian dash cam catches horrific high-flying accident

Russian dash cam catches horrific high-flying accident originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 20 May 2013 12:45:00 EST.
One driver in Portland, OR should make a hefty donation to his or her local wildlife conservation group after a family of ducks got the person out of a speeding ticket. A Portland police officer clocked a car going 52 miles per hour in a 35-mph zone, but when the officer went to pursue the speeder, a mother duck and her two ducklings ran some unintended interference.

Rather than just going around the ducks, the officer blocks the street to usher the waterfowl from the road. While the speeder got away, it's nice to see some compassion from the authorities. Besides, the gesture might've saved more than just the ducks from an unfortunate accident on the rain-slicked road. Scroll down to watch the video taken from the patrol car's dash cam.
Continue reading Portland police pursuit quack down caught on dash cam

Portland police pursuit quack down caught on dash cam originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 May 2013 16:58:00 EST.
After the Good-Samaritan-fest that was the last Russian dash cam video, it's back to our regularly scheduled program of scamming and madness. This time, it's a woman who attempts to pretend she's been hit by a car and rendered unconscious, the same tired con-job that happens to be one of the primary reasons that Russians probably perform more surveillance on themselves than the state does.

It's a remarkably bad job of method acting on the woman's part (is she drunk?), but we'll give her credit for persistence. The worst acting job you'll see all day is on video just below.
Continue reading Pedestrian fakes hilariously bad hit, foiled by Russian dash cam

Pedestrian fakes hilariously bad hit, foiled by Russian dash cam originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 May 2013 19:58:00 EST.
We aren't entirely sure what happened here, but we do know this is one of the luckiest bus drivers we've ever seen. This guy's bus struck what looks to be a light pole while he was driving his passengers around in China. The pole came crashing through the windscreen, knocking him out of the driver's seat in the process. While getting batted around by a big steel tube is no great day at work, the driver narrowly avoids getting his head taken off by the fixture. What's more, he manages to pick himself up off the bus floor and bring the vehicle to a stop before anyone else got seriously injured. Atta boy.

Here's hoping this guy got the chance to stop by a hospital for a quick check up on his way home. You can take a look at the scary video below for yourself.

Continue reading Chinese bus driver barely cheats death by pole

Chinese bus driver barely cheats death by pole originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 28 Mar 2013 12:27:00 EST.
What you see above is a pedestrian crossing the road at a red light while an out-of-control car transporter approaches the intersection at full speed. Caught by a dashcam in an unknown location, it looks like the truck driver saw the red light too late and the icy road prevented him from even having a chance to stop at the light.

We don't want to spoil the ending for you, but we will point out that had the pedestrian crossing the street been paying as little attention as the truck driver, this story would have had a much worse ending. Scroll down to watch the video.
Continue reading Watch this shocking car transporter crash captured on dashcam

Watch this shocking car transporter crash captured on dashcam originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Feb 2013 20:02:00 EST.
The streaking meteor event in Siberia last week has led Jon Stewart to spare a few minutes on The Daily Show to examine footage of the explosion 20 miles high and said to be equal to 300 kilotons of TNT.

But his real interest is asking why so many Russians were able to get the footage in the first place, i.e., why are there so many dashcams? Coincidentally, Wired asked the same question just a few days ago. Using plenty of examples to illustrate his point - akin to this, and this, and this, that we have become oh so used to - Stewart surmises that Russian roads are "A live-action Grand Theft Auto" and that "Russians in their daily lives see so much amazing [expletive] that they have become unfazeable."

They say that wearing a pink tie is a power move, but so is stopping your car in the middle of an entrance ramp and giving a tailgater a good, old-fashioned stare down. If all that's true, that makes the unidentified man in this video Mr. Powermove.

Although we can't tell exactly what happened before the dashcam started recording, the well-dressed driver apparently felt he was being followed too closely, so he stopped his car in the roadway, calmly got out and gave our dashcam-wielding driver a stare that will probably help him or her avoid tailgating in the future. Now there are plenty of methods get someone to stop tailgating you, but this could be one of the gutsiest moves we've even seen.

We wouldn't exactly recommend pulling this move (unless you plan on getting run over or provoking a fight), but you can see what transpires in the video below.
UPDATE: As there usually is with these types of events, there's more to the story. Thankfully, there's also a pre-altercation video to go with it.
Chicken Little would have lost his cookies, yet the Russian driver in this video appears to have kept his wits about him despite the unannounced arrival of a massive fireball falling from the early morning sky - a spectacular event caught by an automotive dash cam - that injured nearly 1,000 people in Siberia.

While scientists estimate that tens of thousands of meteoroids fall from the sky each year, most are just tiny particles that burn up unseen. Only about five thousand are large enough to be really visible (at this point called a "fireball") and then break up and explode to earn the name "bolide." The bolide in the video left an impressive smoke trail of particulate during its ablation, but it also sent nearly a thousand Russians to the hospital for injuries suffered when its sonic blast blew out windows.

In case you are wondering, meteoroids enter the atmosphere at speeds between 25,000 and 160,000 mph. However, like a bullet hitting water, the earth's thick air quickly slows them (rapid compression of the air in front of the rock creates the familiar fiery glow) to a more palatable 200 to 400 mph before they impact the surface. The good news, especially for those who are worried about such events, is that most burn up and never make it all the way down. Check out the video below.
Continue reading Spectacular meteor strike captured in Russian dash cam footage

Spectacular meteor strike captured in Russian dash cam footage originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 15 Feb 2013 16:29:00 EST.
Let the dashcam navel-gazing continue. As the story goes, Australia's National Film and Sound Archive dug up some camera footage in 2008 originally thought to hail from Hobart, Australia. A closer look revealed the images were actually of Vancouver, Canada. In 1907, Seattle filmmaker William Harbeck took his hand-cranked camera aboard one of the city's streetcars and began capturing life as viewed from the streets. The 106-year-old film shows bustling neighborhoods filled with pedestrians, stray dogs and men on bicycles all darting around town. The clip is an interesting glimpse at a life gone by, and predates the claimed oldest dashcam video we showed you before by an impressive 19 years (although obviously it's using a streetcar and not a conventional automobile).

Sadly, chronicler Harbeck met an untimely end. When he was 44 years old, he was commissioned to document the launch of a world-famous ocean liner, a ship that wound up on the bottom of the Atlantic. The name of the vessel? The Titanic. Take a look at Hartbeck's look at Vancouver below.
Continue reading Even older dashcam footage from 1907

Even older dashcam footage from 1907 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 08 Jan 2013 20:00:00 EST.
The archives of the Fire Department of New York has released footage of a borough department responding to a fire in 1926. In the first of two silent videos, the camera is mounted on the car transporting Fire Chief John Kenlon from the Brooklyn Fire Department to a storage warehouse fire on East 123rd Street. Kenlon's name comes up frequently in the rise of the FDNY during the early part of the 20th century. The date of the video is given as April 24, 1926, and it was not only a remarkably snowy spring day, it could be the first dashcam video ever.

The second video takes us through the entire process of a fire call, from the fire alarm - placed in a box on the street - to the call going to the Manhattan Fire Alarm Telegraph Bureau and then being sent to the stations, and the department fighting the fire.

The low-res screencap above shows the hood of Kenlon's vehicle, with a clanging bell at the front, driving on the sidewalk among pedestrians to get to the fire. As you'll see in the videos below, the situation on the actual roads was just as chaotic as the driving. So is the footage playback itself, which repeats and plays upside down and backwards at times, but we think is worth every second.
Continue reading Watch what might be the world's oldest dashcam footage from 1926

Watch what might be the world's oldest dashcam footage from 1926 originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 05 Jan 2013 19:01:00 EST.
A passenger plane attempting to land at the Vnukovo International Airport in Moscow, Russia crashed on Saturday, December 29, killing four of its eight crew members on board, according to CNN. The flight, arriving from the Czech Republic, reportedly overshot the runway and crashed through a fence, sending debris scattering across an adjacent highway. While it's too early for officials to determine the cause of the incident, authorities say pilot error, weather or a technical malfunction could be to blame.

Shockingly, a driver captured the tragic event on video via a dash cam. The clip shows the aircraft bouncing through a barrier before sending dirt, snow and pieces of the plane careening across the roadway and damaging cars.
We come across a lot of dash-cam videos, and while we may have become desensitized to the highway altercations or raceday crashes, this video left us speechless. Simply titled, "well that was 2012," it is a stunning video, chronicling the journey of a handful of Porsche 911s throughout Europe.

The poster of this video explains on his website that he and seven other 911 owners took to an amazing week-long, 2,000-mile journey through seven European countries. The video was shot from the dash of his modified Porsche 993. The tandem movements of the Porsches through traffic has the feeling of a group of friends skiing or snowboarding together, flying past the novices. Oh yeah, and they get pulled over, more than once.

In describing the impression that the trip left, he confesses, "Within a few days of getting home I found it very hard to get back to normal life." Umm... yeah, we can understand that.

Sometimes becoming too wrapped up in the automotive news cycle, we risk losing sight of the big picture. This video serves as a reminder of why we obsessively cover this industry. It stems from a love of the open road, complemented by car worthy of carving it up. We may not all be able to cross Europe in a Porsche 911, but thankfully for videos like this, we can at least get a taste.
Continue reading Seven days with eight Porsches in Europe looks how you would expect

Seven days with eight Porsches in Europe looks how you would expect originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Dec 2012 12:44:00 EST.
When we thought we'd make it to the end of the month before we saw another video from the roads of Russia, we were wrong. Just after the video of the truck driver dismounting from the windshield of his cab, we have of a bolt of lightning saying hello to a Toyota Landcruiser.

It's brief but spectacular, and sadly, nothing like what happened in Back to the Future follows. You can watch it happen in slo-mo in the dashcam video below.
Continue reading Watch lightning strike a hapless Toyota Landcruiser

Watch lightning strike a hapless Toyota Landcruiser originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 19:59:00 EST.
Augusto Farfus isn't even 30 years old yet, but he already has a certain commanding precision on many of the world's greatest racetracks, including Germany's famed Nürburgring. In the latest installment of the "Scare Your Wife At The Track" internet video meme, the BMW DTM driver takes his wife, Liri, for a high-speed tour of the Nürburgring in a BMW M3 Coupe.

When Liri agreed to hop in the passenger seat for a hot lap with her husband, we have a feeling the two had different meanings of "slow" and "exciting" driving. While most of us would have a hard enough time just staying on the challenging track, Farfus tackles the Green Hell while explaining elements of the track and dealing with his wife screaming in fear for most of the nearly 10-minute video. At one point (around the 5:02 mark) it looks as if Mrs. Farfus even starts to pass out a little just before saying that she's going to be sick, but she still handles the ordeal better than the respective wives of Riccardo Patrese and João Barbosa, the reigning queens of the Scare Your Wife meme.

Farfus, who we learn early in the video has a nickname of "Ninho" from his wife, is having fun the entire video commenting on a classic Mercedes-Benz as they blow past it, an Audi driver who Farfus comments "probably thinks he knows the track" as they pass it in a turn and numerous other cars and motorcycles.

Check out the video below to see whether or not Ninho will end up in the dog house for his antics.
Continue reading Today's 'Race Car Driver Freaking Out His Wife On A Track' is BMW's Augusto Farfus

Today's 'Race Car Driver Freaking Out His Wife On A Track' is BMW's Augusto Farfus originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 12:46:00 EST.
After an accident, most of us are left scratching our heads as to what we do next, but the guy pictured above is probably scratching his head wondering how he's still alive. Captured from the dashcam of this Russian driver, a massive collision between two big rigs shows that while seatbelts definitely save lives, sometimes it doesn't hurt to have luck (make that a lot of luck) on your side, too.

It isn't clear if the truck in front of our camera was trying to squeeze into a left turn, execute a passing maneuver or simply or simply trying to avoid a stopped truck in the road, but either way, there wasn't enough room. The result was this blue truck slamming into the side of the turning truck at a pretty good clip. This truck driver, obviously not wearing his seatbelt, was ejected out of the cab through the windshield, but more impressive/amazing is the fact that ends up sticking the landing in a way that might leave Gabby Douglas or Aly Raisman feeling a little jealous.

While we can't say for sure whether or not this driver suffered any injuries, we sure hope he learned his lesson and buckles up in the future.

Watch how this truck driver miraculously survives his ejection in the video below.
Continue reading Russian trucks crash into each other, one driver nails the dismount

Russian trucks crash into each other, one driver nails the dismount originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 24 Sep 2012 19:58:00 EST. In this month's installment of From Russia with OMG, dashcam footage reveals another reason why local drivers should receive hazard pay. The black Ford Focus in the picture above is just about to run over a street trolley wire that has come undone and fallen onto the road. Or rather, that's what you'd expect to happen, but the trolley wire had a different idea that could be captioned with the line, "You shall not pass."

Unfortunately it appears the driver did not emerge entirely unscathed from the ensuing accident. But he did emerge, and in Russia, that looks to be a triumph. You can see watch it all happen in the video below.
Continue reading Ford Focus hits downed trolley wire, spectacular accident ensues

Ford Focus hits downed trolley wire, spectacular accident ensues originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 24 Sep 2012 12:45:00 EST.
Just a little word of advice: if a friend needs your help to back up while trying to park, it would probably be wise not to stand behind her while she does so. Such is the lesson we learn from today's frightening dash cam video.

As the driver of this Renault Sandero Stepway has problems navigating a tight parking area, her passenger gets out in an attempt to help out. She helps out alright - as a human buffer.

It seems as though the driver unknowingly left her car in reverse and then got startled by the results. So what did our driving-challenged motorist do after the initial impact that nearly killed her friend? She finally figures out how to put her car in drive and takes off.

Not only is this woman one of the worst drivers ever, she will definitely be up for "Worst Friend of the Year" award for leaving her seemingly injured passenger behind.

Most states have some sort of "Move Over" law requiring drivers to change lanes or slow down when passing emergency vehicles that are stopped on the side of the road, and the reason for these laws is to prevent what happened to Maryland state trooper David Avila. He had just pulled over a Hyundai Santa Fe when a semi truck veered onto the shoulder, hit the parked police car and clipped Avila, who was standing next to the pulled-over vehicle.

The incident happened on June 14, and it was all captured on the cruiser's dash camera. After being hit by the truck, Avila staggered over to the guard rail before collapsing. There is no audio in the YouTube video, but you can hear what happened in the video on the Today Show by scrolling down. Just seconds before he was hit, you can hear the truck running over the rumble strips, and even after he was injured, Avila remained aware of the situation by telling the motorist to remain in his vehicle. He had injuries to his shoulder, back and leg, and the patrolman remains in physical therapy.

On top of the failure of the semi truck to move over, the motorist in the Hyundai also stopped on a part of the shoulder that was very narrow, making the situation even more dangerous for Avila. As for the truck driver, he has been identified as William Riegel, Jr. of Pennsylvania. Riegel was subsequently fined $100 for negligent driving and failing to obey the move over law.

While we're not completely sure on the specifics of this video, two things we know for sure are that (1) this dashcam owner really needs to learn how to edit a video and (2) the driver of this car will likely stay in his or her lane during future turns.

After spending a minute and a half of staring at what has to be one of the worst-designed intersections in the world, the driver of this dashcam-equipped car starts to make a left-hand turn and attempts to go around a Toyota minivan that is slowing down for a large truck. In doing so, the car ends up behind a crane being hauled on a lowboy trailer, and at some point the crane hooks to the car. What we can't see is how the car gets hooked to the crane, but it's enough to pick the car up, turn it 90 degrees and drag it down the street at a 45-degree angle with horns blaring and tires screeching. The unknowing truck driver is only made aware of the situation thanks to a moped rider who speeds by the entangled vehicles and gets the truck to stop.

If you live in certain parts of the world, it's probably best just to own a dashcam and leave it running at all times. Luckily, this Taiwanese driver had is camera rolling and was able to prevent himself from becoming a scam victim. He is not alone in this fight.

In the video, a girl is seen standing in the street before she runs at the car and lunges onto the hood, acting as if she had been hit. The intrepid driver, knowing that he has the upper hand in this ruse, exits his vehicle and begins chiding the would-be scammer for her failed attempts. One would assume that in taking the phone out of its holster, he was alerting the authorities of this incident - except for the fact that he appears to be a law enforcement officer himself (so says the video's YouTube description).

This type of scam is rampant throughout various parts of the world, usually involving other vehicles, but in this case it was a human being. It has prompted many drivers to leave dashcams rolling constantly. An unexpected byproduct of this self-preservation effort is an abundance of documented automotive chicanery. Russia alone has to be the world leader in absurd dashcam videos.
