Last year, Chrysler announced it would be offering more than 150 Mopar parts and accessories on the 2013 Dodge Dart, and we got a look at some of these parts firsthand at the Chicago Auto Show. Showing off all the optional parts at once would surely create a gaudy monstrosity, so Chrysler chose to equip this particular Dart GT with just a handful of Mopar goodies, which still gave the car a nice and tasteful custom look that is available straight from the dealership (and with a full warranty, too).

Decked out in a factory color called Header Orange Clear Coat - also a very appropriate show car hue - this car added exterior styling parts such as the vented, carbon fiber hood, the bolt-on front chin spoiler and a matte black decklid spoiler. Looking inside the car, you'd think the red-accented interior is part of the Mopar parts bin, too, but this is actually what the standard Dart GT cabin will look like when it goes on sale.
Continue reading 2013 Dodge Dart gets all Moparized

2013 Dodge Dart gets all Moparized originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 Feb 2013 18:31:00 EST.
For the fourth year in a row, Mopar is offering a limited-production car decked with a plenty of add-ons and a unique look. This year's black-and-blue car is the Mopar '13 Dart, which was unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show with the now-signature paint scheme. Like previous Mopar models, only 500 of the '13 Darts will be built. Past models include the Mopar '10 Challenger, Mopar '11 Charger and the Mopar '12 300.

The all-black Dart gets a brightly contrasting, offset blue stripe running the full length of the car, and other styling mods like the aero-tuned body kit, gloss black grille, wheels and mirror caps. Curiously, Mopar chose to stick with the Dart's standard headlights rather than the darker, smoked lights. The interior gets a similar black-and-blue treatment, but this unique cabin features a blue leather driver's seat to go along with the black leather seating for the rest of the passengers.

More than just a styling package, the Mopar '13 Dart also gets some performance and handling goodies to complement the Dart's turbocharged 1.4-liter engine, such as upgraded brakes with slotted rotors, a lowered suspension, retuned electric power steering and a "sport-tuned" exhaust system.

We think this officially counts as a tradition. Every year going back to 2010, Mopar has rolled out a limited edition version of a popular product from the Chrysler Group portfolio. First it was the Mopar '10 Challenger, then the Mopar '11 Charger, then last year's Mopar '12 300, and this year it will be the Mopar '13 Dart, which will make its official world debut next week at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show.

Limited in number to just 500 units, the Mopar '13 Dart is no mere appearance package, though the demeanor of the Dart will be murdered out with a gloss black finish, gloss black 18-inch wheels, a set of Mopar blue stripes and a mean-looking Mopar ground effects kit. Likewise, the interior is touched up with leather seats (a blue one for the driver and black hides for the passengers), gloss black and black chrome trim, blue accent stitching, a sport pedal kit and other Mopar interior accessories.

Turning our attention back to the mechanical bits, the Mopar '13 Dart comes with the car's most powerful engine, a turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir four (shared with Fiat 500 Abarth) that's paired with a manual transmission. Those big, black wheels get wrapped in low profile 225/40R18 performance tires, and keeping everything in check is an upgraded brake kit with slotted rotors. The steering has also been calibrated for performance, the suspension lowered seven millimeters, and the exhaust tuned for better engine breathing.

But no, dear customer, that's not all. The Mopar '13 Dart also gets Chrysler's wireless smartphone charging technology, and those 500 lucky souls who bring one home will receive a "personalized owner kit" in a custom black case that includes a personalized plate with vehicle specs, a unique number ID for their car and a limited edition sketch of the car signed by its designer, among other tchotchkes. Production for the Mopar '13 Dart will begin this spring at the company's plant in Belvidere, IL.

Now we're wondering what vehicle Mopar will lay its hands upon next year. Any guesses?
Continue reading Mopar '13 Dart will roll into Chicago next week

Mopar '13 Dart will roll into Chicago next week originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 31 Jan 2013 00:01:00 EST. Episode #317 of the Autoblog Podcast is here, and this week, Dan Roth, Jeff Ross and Michael Harley bookend the other podcast topics with a pair from the Montreal Auto Show, the Mitsubishi Mirage and Honda Gear concept, and in between we talk about Toyota building all its US-market cars stateside, Hyundai building a Nurburgring test facility, Sergio Marchionne's latest words about Alfa Romeo, Dodge Dart powertrains and the future of Chrysler vans. Some chatter about the Ford Atlas concept finishes up the meat of the 'cast and then we wrap with your questions.
To be honest, we're surprised something like this didn't pop up sooner. Chrysler is riffing on gift registries for couples getting married or expecting babies and cross-pollinating it with a social media funding website like Kickstarter to help customers buy its 2013 Dodge Dart. The Dodge Dart Registry allows people to build and customize a new Dart exactly how they want it, then let other people purchase some or all of the components as gifts.

The registry lets you add features like dark headlights, dual exhaust, various wheels and even interior options without choosing a specific trim level. This sounds a lot like the system Scion uses to let its customers configure cars, and this could be a great idea for Dodge. Of course, this system has the added benefit of being a social media affair for you to share with your friends... you know, so they can help pay for some of the parts, too.

The best thing about the registry is that you can configure your dream Dart from the comfort of your home computer, which strikes us as much better than walking around Bed, Bath and Beyond for the better part of an afternoon with an electronic scanner. The one thing that Dodge doesn't offer? "Thank You" cards. Those are on you.

For more information about how to get your friends and family to help buy you a Dodge Dart, Chrysler has provided a video and press release, which we've posted below.
Continue reading Dodge Dart Registry helps you crowdsource money for your next ride [w/video]

Dodge Dart Registry helps you crowdsource money for your next ride [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 Jan 2013 14:15:00 EST.
Striving for improved fuel economy, we already knew that Chrysler will begin using a nine-speed automatic transmission in some of its new products this year, but what we haven't known is that volume at which this gearbox will be used. According to Bloomberg, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has been quoted as saying that the automaker expects to sell close to 200,000 units equipped with this new transmission in 2013. Those gear-rich trannies will be spread out across three models, consisting of the redesigned Chrysler 200, the still-unnamed Jeep Liberty replacement and the Dodge Dart.

This transmission should play a pivotal role in making Chrysler vehicles more competitive in their respective segments. Just for comparison, one of the Dart's key competitors, the Toyota Corolla, still uses a four-speed automatic, and a previous report indicates that the next-generation 200 could get up to 38 miles per gallon on the highway, which is better than most non-hybrid midsize sedans on the market. Marchionne says that the new Jeep model is expected during the second quarter of this year, but there is no word as to when the new 200 or nine-speed Dart will debut, but clearly Dodge would like to have the transmission in its compact yesterday. As for that volume figure, it definitely doesn't seem out of reach since the Dart, Liberty and 200 combined for a total of more than 225,000 units in 2012.

How many more gears can we expect in future cars? Probably not many more, since the CEO of transmission-builder ZF, Stefan Sommer, previously stated that nine speeds was the "natural limit" for transmissions.

Dodge has already shared all of the relevant information about its all-new 2013 Dart GT, but it wasn't until now that we've seen the car, live and in person. The slightly meaner front fascia and bigger wheels look great on the Dodge, and the red-on-black perforated seats are sporting in an aftermarket sort of way.

To recap: The Dart GT also gets a bit more power, using a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine to make 184 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. A starting price of $20,995 will get you LED taillights, dual exhaust, an 8.4-inch touchscreen and a 7.0-inch TFT display.

Since all of this tech comes attached to vehicles, that meant giving away another car!

With the Chrysler UConnect system having won the inaugural award this year, they decided the prize should be a brand new 2013 Dodge Dart equipped with the UConnect system.

The giveaway starts today and runs through January 25th, so make sure to enter here for your chance to win a new Dart valued at $23,820. If you want to know more about the new Dart, click here to read our review of it.
AOL Autos Giveaway: Win a 2013 Dodge Dart with UConnect! originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 09 Jan 2013 18:44:00 EST.
Dodge has just confirmed that it will be bringing its newest Dart variant, the Dart GT, to Detroit next week, but we're still in the dark about when we'll see a truly hotted-up SRT4 version. But now, by way of the rumormill anyway, we've got at least one proposed, potentially Dodge-based rendering to light our way.

Seen here is what would appear to be a design sketch of the SRT4 Dart. Obviously the image that has surfaced is of rather low-resolution, but there's at least some evidence to support that it may be legitimate. In the original picture, one can just make out the name Tim Doyle in the lower right corner. As it turns out, Tim Doyle's name is also watermarked on the final design image for the 2011 Dodge Durango Citadel Black & Tan, a model that was shown at SEMA in 2010.

Of course, even if this really is the work of Doyle, there's nothing to say that this image isn't one of a great many potential looks for the future SRT4. In fact, the departure of the cross-hair grille from the Dodge's nose seems like it could be a hard sell, though we do, naturally, dig the sleek hood scoop and the bulked up wheel/tire combination.

Whether or not a much-rumored Dart SRT4 materializes (let alone looks like this) is an open question, but we're still holding out hope that the car is fitted with the nearly 300-horsepower four-cylinder that has been rumored in the past.
Are you the Dodge Dart SRT4? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 08 Jan 2013 16:01:00 EST.
No, this isn't quite the Dart SRT4 we've been waiting for - and still believe is coming - but as part of its 2013 Detroit Auto Show lineup, Dodge will be showing off the slightly sportier Dart GT seen here.

Building on the already well-equipped Limited model, the GT adds performance enhancements including a more powerful engine, 18-inch aluminum wheels, sport suspension calibration, unique front fascia and dual exhaust. Inside, you'll find perforated Nappa leather seats, a heated steering wheel and front seats, dual-zone climate control, remote start (if you spec the automatic transmission), Chrysler's 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen, a seven-inch TFT display in the gauge cluster, and a whole lot more. Optional goodies include hyper black aluminum wheels, a technology group (pushbutton start, keyless go, rain-sensing wipers, blind spot monitoring and smart-beam headlamps), power sunroof, Sirius radio, Garmin navigation, Alpine premium sound and high-intensity discharge headlamps.

Powering the Dart GT is Chrysler's 2.4-liter MultiAir2 four-cylinder engine producing 184 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. That grunt is sent to the front wheels via a standard six-speed manual transmission, but a six-speed automatic 'box is optional.

That's a whole lot of kit, and for a starting price of $20,995 (excluding destination charges), on the surface, the Dart GT strikes us as quite a bargain for the compact class. Look for production to start in the second quarter of 2013, and while you're waiting, scroll down for the full smattering of details in Chrysler's official press release.
Continue reading 2013 Dart GT will hold us over until SRT stokes Dodge's handsome compact

2013 Dart GT will hold us over until SRT stokes Dodge's handsome compact originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 08 Jan 2013 09:00:00 EST.
November was a rough month for the Dodge Dart. All told, Chrysler managed to deliver 4,489 units, down from 5,455 in October, but perhaps more telling is the sizable inventory Dodge now has on hand. Chrysler added a third shift to the Belvidere, Illinois plant that produces the new compact in order to satiate projected demand, and as a result, Dodge now has a 112-day supply of Dart models. That equates to 23,446 units waiting for a new home. Automakers typically average a supply of around 73 days. But the news wasn't so grim for the rest of the Chrysler stable.

Ward's Auto reports the Chrysler 200 saw particularly good sales through November, with the four-door seeing a 49.6 percent increase through the first 11 months of 2012 compared to the same time period on 2011. Likewise, the genetic sibling to the 200, the Dodge Avenger, saw sales jump 54.8 percent year over year through the same 11 months.
Dodge Dart misses sales targets as inventory mounts originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Dec 2012 09:14:00 EST.

The 2013 Dodge Dart is the most visible manifestation of the still-new monogamous relationship between Chrysler and Fiat, the Pentastar's savior from the depths of government-sponsored bankruptcy (or worse). If you'll recall, one of the big problems pundits, management and government officials identified with Chrysler's US lineup was its complete lack of competitive small cars.

Now would be a good time to mention that Dodge had a good thing with the original Neon. Not only did the little subcompact sell in conspicuously high numbers, it was also pretty fun to drive, especially in 150-horsepower ACR Coupe trim. In fact, so entertaining was the little two-door coupe, powered as it was by a dual-overhead-cam version of Chrysler's 2.0-liter four cylinder, that it spawned its very own racing series.

The successful Neon got a redesign in the year 2000, and as has so often been the case, the Pentastar Crew didn't do nearly enough to keep it competitive amidst a sea of Civics and Corollas, save the way-too-quick-for-its-own-good Neon SRT4, that is. The response to lagging market share? The Dodge Caliber, introduced in 2007. Suffice it to say that the Caliber was not the answer small-car buyers were looking for.

Enter the Dart. Is this compact the small-car savior Chrysler envisioned when it paired with Italy's Fiat? Let's take a closer look.

2013 Dodge Dart originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Dec 2012 11:57:00 EST.
The Dodge Dart, Cadillac XTS and Lincoln MKS all failed to earn a "Recommended" rating from Consumer Reports. When it came to the compact Dart, the organization's testers thought the vehicle offered a quiet cabin, solid-feeling chassis and nimble suspension, but the new model ultimately fell short of the coveted rating due to powertrain issues. The institute's reviewers found the base 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to be underpowered and noted "drivability issues" when the available turbocharged 1.4-liter four was paired with the optional dual-clutch transmission (some of our editors disliked it paired with the six-speed manual). CR also dinged the latter powerplant for sounding "raspy." For what it's worth, we think the forced-induction engine offers an excellent and playful exhaust note, but that's just us.

As for the XTS, CR lauded the car for its luxurious cabin, but the vehicle's experience was dulled by its finicky CUE infotainment interface. Overall, the big Cadillac scored much higher than its cross-town rival from Lincoln. While testers found the American luxury sedan to offer a quiet ride and quality fit and finish, they felt the MKS delivered a "cramped driving position, ungainly handling, uncomposed ride, and limited visibility." Ouch. At the end of the day, both cars fell short of rivals from Japan, Germany and Korea. Check out the full press release below with more details, along with CR's musings on the Chevrolet Spark and Lexus ES.
Continue reading Dodge Dart falls short of Consumer Reports Recommended, Caddy XTS and Lincoln MKS, too

Dodge Dart falls short of Consumer Reports Recommended, Caddy XTS and Lincoln MKS, too originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Nov 2012 18:28:00 EST.
Chrysler is taking on the 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas in a big way, with a sprawling 15,300 square-foot display encompassing a total of 24 modified vehicles. We got a chance to preview some of those creations, including the plucky little Fiat 500C you see above. Designers decided to take a page from the West Coast custom scene with unique widebody fender flares. The 500 Beach Cruiser sits a full foot wider front and rear thanks in part to a set of prototype aluminum wheels. We dig on the louvers and the wooden surfboard rack, too (though with the canvas lid slid back, we're guessing it'd make for some interesting tan lines).

Of course, it wouldn't be a Mopar booth without at least one outrageous engine swap. The Dodge Charger Juiced fills that role this year with a Viper V10 crate engine worth a full 650 horsepower. Other stars include the Chrysler 300 Luxury, with its unique True Blue Pearl paint and Katzkin leather interior, as well as the 392-powered Urban Ram and carbon-fiber laden Dodge Dart Carbon Fire (which appears to be nearly identical to the car we showed you in spy shots last week). You can check out the full press release below for more information.
Continue reading Chrysler previews SEMA showcars

Chrysler previews SEMA showcars originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 12 Oct 2012 12:45:00 EST.
Our spy photographers have caught something interesting rolling around Auburn Hills. This Dodge Dart R/T wears some interesting matte gray paint as well as a set of 19-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero performance rubber. It's difficult to tell from this vantage, but the sedan may sit slightly lower than other models we've seen as well. Of course, it's difficult to miss the aggressive hood scoop planted front and center. Don't get too excited, though. Odds are this is not the much-rumored SRT-4, but rather a special one-off whipped up for the 2012 SEMA show next month. That hood, for example, comes straight from the Mopar catalog.

Still, we wouldn't rule out Dodge offering a matte paint on the Dart option sheet. If Hyundai can make the coating viable on a large volume model like the Veloster, there's certainly nothing stopping Chrysler from doing the same. Keep your ear to the ground for more information.
Dodge Dart spotted in matte paint wearing 19-inch Pirelli P-Zeros originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 08 Oct 2012 16:31:00 EST.
Hitting at least 40 miles per gallon is practically a necessity to compete in the compact car segment these days, and the 2013 Dodge Dart has hit this mark with the all-new Aero package. The Dart Aero is Dodge's fuel economy package for the car that starts at $19,295 (not including the $795 destination charge), and while Hyundai has been saving the asterisks since 2010, many other automakers use a similar method to get that magic 40-mpg rating onto the Monroney label.

The Dart Aero receives Fiat's 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo I4 and numerous other changes to hit up to 41 mpg highway with the manual transmission which is an improvement of 2 mpg alone over Chrysler's initial estimates for the car. Opting for the new dual dry clutch transmission will drop the highway number to an even 40 mpg - cars with either transmission are rated at 28 mpg city and 32 mpg combined. These are significant gains over initial Dart models with the 2.0-liter engine that were rated at up to 25 mpg city/36 mpg highway/29 mpg combined. This new engine also delivers the same 160 horsepower as the base engine, but it adds an extra 36 pound-feet of torque rated at 184 lb-ft.

Other than the new engine and the advanced DDCT gearbox, the Dart Aero was able to deliver such an improvement in fuel economy courtesy of a lower profile, active grille shutters, underbody aero kit and low-rolling resistance tires.

Compared to the base 2013 Dart, the Aero package is a $3,300 premium, but cars like the Focus SFE, Civic HF, Cruze Eco, Mazda3 Skyactiv and Jetta TDI all charge a premium for playing in the 40-mpg sandbox. Included in this higher price, the Dart Aero comes standard with some of the Dart's unique features like the 8.4-inch media center, the Dart's seven-inch TFT gauge cluster and one of the car's most stylish elements, the LED "racetrack" taillights.

It isn't clear when the Dart Aero will be on sale, but Chrysler says that the car went into production over the summer. Scroll down to read the full press release on this car.
Continue reading 2013 Dodge Dart Aero fuel miser priced from $19,295*

2013 Dodge Dart Aero fuel miser priced from $19,295* originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 14:29:00 EST.
Dodge has released a second smash-cut "How to..." ad for the new Dart. Just like the last one, its full of a whole lot of stuff coming at you at once.

Dodge would like you to think that its R&D department constructed a time machine, and brought a man back from the future to construct the thin film transistor (TFT) display that can be ordered to replace traditional analog gauges on the Dart, as well as the massive-for-a-small-car 8.4-inch Uconnect touch screen display. Apparently after using Minority Report-style technology, he creates these two devices, is sent back to the future, and the time machine is destroyed. How did the spy photographers not catch this?

OK, but seriously, Dodge is making the point that the TFT screen and Uconnect 8.4 are seriously high tech and especially rare in a compact car. Oh yeah, and there's more Tom Brady.

Check out the video and accompanying press release below. This ad will air during a commercial break tonight on a special Wednesday edition of Sunday Night Football (that last bit only makes sense if you watch football regularly.)
Continue reading Dodge debuts second 'How to build a...'
Travis Pastrana has had a tough start to 2012, wrecking out of nearly every race he's entered. The Global RallyCross Championship has been particularly frustrating, with the Red Bull Motorsports driver finishing 8th and 15th in the first two events of the season and failing to make its past the first round of the X Games after getting smashed into the wall in the first turn.

Pastrana hopes his fortunes have turned around, though, after managing to give the Dodge Dart its first RallyCross win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway this past weekend. He qualified third overall and managed to win his heat, giving him a spot on the front row for the final race. Pastrana took advantage of his position, jumping out to a first lap lead after passing Tanner Foust in a hairpin and eventually finishing just ahead of Samuel Hubinette. Brian Deegan rounded out the podium in third place, with Foust finishing in fourth and Ken Block in fifth.

"It's been so long, I almost forgot what it's like to win," said Pastrana after the race. "It is absolutely awesome to get out here and get on top. It has been a rough season."

The next and final race of the 2012 Global RallyCross season will be at Las Vegas Motor Speedway over the weekend of September 28-29.
