It's been a huge month, leading up to the Super Bowl of NASCAR, the Daytona 500. This is the first year of the new Car of Tomorrow, the "Gen Six" car, and all of the drivers have been trying to figure out its intricacies. The Ford Fusion and Chevrolet NASCAR SS has joined the field and its street-legal equivalent, the SS, was introduced. A huge wreck in the Nationwide Series race the day before the Daytona 500 tore a car in half, tore a hole in the fence, sent car parts flying into the crowd and injured some 33 spectators.

And then, of course, making just her 11th Sprint Cup Series start, there was Danica Patrick on pole position. She'd lead the way for the 43 cars on the grid to start the 200 laps of the 2.5-mile oval called the Daytona International Speedway, with its five-story-high turns banked at 31 degrees and the 3,000-foot front stretch banked at 18 degrees.

Perhaps all that excitement is why James Franco, the honorary race starter there to promote Disney's new film, Oz the Great and Powerful, yelled "Drivers, and Danica, start your engines!" to begin the 65th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship...
Continue reading Race Recap: 2013 Daytona 500 runs 200 laps, six of them count [spoilers]

Race Recap: 2013 Daytona 500 runs 200 laps, six of them count [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 24 Feb 2013 22:40:00 EST.
196.434 miles per hour. That's the top speed hit by Stewart-Haas racing driver Danica Patrick during Saturday's qualifying for the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. Not only was that speed good enough to earn Patrick pole position for the race on Sunday, February 24, it is the fastest speed recorded in qualifying for Daytona since 1990.

"You can do anything you want to do, and gender doesn't matter," said Patrick. And she's right: Danica Patrick can now claim to be the first woman to win pole position in NASCAR's top racing division. Since this will be her first full year in the Sprint Cup, she's also the first rookie driver to score pole since Jimmie Johnson managed the feat in 2002.

So, how do you celebrate winning pole position at Daytona? "I'm probably gonna grab some beers," said Patrick. Sounds like a winning plan to us. Scroll down below to watch a video from NASCAR highlighting the historic event.
Continue reading Danica Patrick becomes first woman to win Sprint Cup pole

Danica Patrick becomes first woman to win Sprint Cup pole originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 17 Feb 2013 20:50:00 EST.
Danica Patrick has been a lightning rod for both praise and criticism throughout her objectively successful, decade-long career as a racing driver. Putting to the side for a moment that it is still very rare for a woman to get a drive in a top-tier series, something that Patrick first managed back in the 2005 IRL season, her successes are still impressive. Patrick is the only woman to ever win an IndyCar race, hold the best finish ever by a woman at the Indy 500 (third) as well as being the only woman to lead the storied race in Indianapolis.

It's all of that background that has Slate writer (and racing aficionado) Laura Helmuth up in arms. Helmuth's basic claim is that Patrick's questionable sponsorship deals, and resultant lowest-common-denominator commercials, have not only undermined her credibility as a role model for woman and girls, but have even served to set back woman's rights and the place of woman in the sport of racing.

The argument is nuanced and interesting, and we encourage you to click through and read it in full on Slate. When you're done, come back and tell us what you think about the Patrick/Go Daddy relationship in our poll below.

There are undoubtedly many male NASCAR fans who have become smitten with Danica Patrick, but Kyle Petty might be one of the oldest. Petty, 52, serenaded Patrick, 30, on Speed Channel's NASCAR Trackside show before her appearance as a guest.

In the video, Petty is seen sitting on a bed wearing GoDaddy.com attire with other Patrick memorabilia in the room including a cardboard cutout of her face, and in stripped-down his country ditty, he sings "Danica, you're the girl that drives my dreams." Being a good sport to Petty's creepy antics, Patrick showed up on the show with a 1995 picture of a long, wavy-locked Petty (which he referred to as his "Yanni years") that she asked him to sign.

This video stands in stark contrast to Petty's December, 2009 video about Patrick where he sarcastically congratulates her and says she will be taking a seat away from someone who "potentially coulda been a great race car driver." We've posted that video, as well as Petty's ballad, for you below.
Continue reading Watch Kyle Petty sing a ballad about Danica Patrick

Watch Kyle Petty sing a ballad about Danica Patrick originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 17 Sep 2012 15:31:00 EST.
NASCAR officials have made the call to postpone the Daytona 500 until Monday, February 27 at 12:00PM EST on account of rain. This marks the first time that the 53-year-old race has been pushed back a day due to weather. The start of the race today was delayed by heavy rains, and while the weather did clear up long enough for track officials to break out their extensive fleet of track-drying trucks, the window didn't stay open long enough to run The Great American race. Carl Edwards will start on the pole when the race begins at noon tomorrow. Joining him and the rest of the field will be Danica Patrick, who garnered most of the attention the week prior to the race. This year's season opening race also marks the long-awaited debut of electronic fuel injection to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
Daytona 500 postponed until Monday on account of rain originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 26 Feb 2012 17:43:00 EST.
If "rubbin is racin'!", an incident during the Gatorade Duel races to determine starting spots for this weekend's Daytona 500 NASCAR race also proves that rubbin' is wreckin'. With just two corners to go, Danica Patrick was running near tenth place down on the inside of a tightly packed field. Above her, Jaime McMurray bumped Aric Almirola, who then bumped Patrick and sent her careening into the infield wall at about 200 miles per hour.

Patrick emerged on her own and was declared fine. Her No. 10 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet wasn't: it was totaled, and by having to use the backup she'll start at the back of the pack for the Daytona 500. Patrick was philosophical about it, though, and provided one of the best descriptions of meeting a wall at the double-ton: "kind of hug it in and let it rip." According to USA Today, before the incident, Patrick had run a solid race and stayed out of trouble. Despite the incident (which wasn't her fault), the way Patrick ran the race gained her some respect among others in the field.

There are two videos of the crash after the jump, the first is better quality, the second includes Patrick's comments after the incident.
Continue reading Danica Patrick walks away from big crack-up in Daytona

Danica Patrick walks away from big crack-up in Daytona originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 24 Feb 2012 09:02:00 EST.
As Danica Patrick prepares for her first NASCAR Sprint Cup race next weekend in the Daytona 500, she's apparently taking advantage of the publicity to try to remediate her image. After seven years of promoting her attractiveness with nearly equal billing to her race driving acumen, Patrick has asked the media to quit calling her "sexy."

According to USA Today, Patrick said "If there is a pretty girl, (reporters) don't know how to describe her other than being sexy. It has such a negative connotation to it ... Why can't there be other words for it? Why does it have to be somewhat negatively twisted?"

Patrick was featured in the 2008 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, and has appeared in racy ads for her sponsor GoDaddy.com that also played up her looks. She has also made several "sexiest" lists, including one compiled by Victoria's Secret and two by FHM magazine.

Patrick's big break came in her first Indy 500 appearance, when she became the first woman to lead the race. She finished fourth that year, in the same position she qualified. Patrick raced in the Indy Racing League for seven years, while also competing in ARCA and NASCAR's Nationwide Series in 2010 and 2011 in preparation for this year's transition to Sprint Cup.
PSA: Danica Patrick prefers being called "pretty" rather than "sexy" originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Feb 2012 11:30:00 EST.
It's official, ladies and gents: IndyCar starlet Danica Patrick is moving up to the big leagues in NASCAR. The official announcement came in over the weekend that Patrick will be making her Spring Cup debut at no less lofty a race than the Daytona 500 come February 26, where she'll be driving for Stewart-Haas Racing.

The move to America's premier closed-wheel series comes after several lower-level stock car races in the ARCA and Nationwide series, efforts that saw Danica leading five times at the Subway Jalapeno 250 back in July.

In starting the Daytona 500, Danica will be only the third woman to contest the iconic race, joining the likes of Janet Guthrie (who finished 12th in 1977 and 11th in 1980) and Shawna Robinson (24th in 2002). You'll find more details in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Danica Patrick making NASCAR Sprint Cup debut at Daytona 500

Danica Patrick making NASCAR Sprint Cup debut at Daytona 500 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 07 Nov 2011 10:30:00 EST.
Danica Patrick is no stranger to NASCAR, but her regular ride is in the IndyCar series. That looks like it could be about to change, however, as Dale Earnhardt Jr. wants Patrick to join his JR Motorsports team as a full-time member. Running the entire 2012 Nationwide series will certainly take up the majority of her time, but it appears Danica will still be able to schedule seat time in her IndyCar racer.

The big question for Patrick is whether she can compete in the Indianapolis 500. It's a time-consuming event that would require Danica to give up most of her May, yet the Nationwide series runs three races over the course of that month. Still, it seems that Earnhardt and his team are looking to accommodate Patrick's desire to run at Indy, which would make her decision to sign on for a full NASCAR season a bit easier.
Danica Patrick switching to NASCAR, keeping Indy 500 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 03 Aug 2011 16:00:00 EST.
The IndyCar Series made a major announcement since the last race at Watkins Glen, deciding to stick with Dallara as its chassis supplier, but opening the game up a bit by allowing other manufacturers the option to supply aero packages and engines. Many think this will boil down to more of the same in IndyCar, but at least on paper, it has the potential to get more companies involved. Some of the bigger nuggets to drop from the official announcement were the new, lower prices of these 2012 IndyCar chassis and the fact that Dallara is building a plant right near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to generate a few more jobs for the state's residents and to make it quicker and easier to make chassis changes during the season. But all of that is still a couple of years off and they still had a race to run this weekend.

The 2010 Honda Indy Toronto is the second race run on this particular 1.755-mile street circuit around the Canadian city of Toronto, although there has been a major open-wheel street race in Toronto since 1967, and CART/IRL races have been held there ever since 1986. Dario Franchitti won the race in 2009 and went on to win the championship last year as well. This year, Franchitti trails Team Penske's Will Power for the points lead and after Saturday's qualifying for Toronto, the Target Chip Ganassi driver found himself fifth on the grid behind Ryan Hunter-Reay (Team IZOD Andretti Autosport) in fourth, Helio Castroneves (Team Penske) in third, Power in second and polesitter Justin Wilson of Team Z-Line Designs/DRR Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, who has posted some impressive results this year and currently stands eighth in the championship standings. Could Wilson stay out front for his first win of the season? Could Franchitti repeat from last year and possibly take the points lead for 2010? Or would Will Power place high enough to retain his lead?

Sometimes referred to as America's Monaco, the Izod IndyCar Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach typically means sun, surf, stargazing and sensational street racing action in one weekend-long party. The 2010 edition looked to be no exception as the weather was beautiful and there were plenty of stars in attendance. Some were competing in the weekend's well-known Pro/Celebrity race while others were competing or managing in other series, and others were just there as fans.

Going into this, the fourth round of the 2010 IndyCar Series, Will Power was coming off his first loss of the season in Alabama and looking to regain his invincible status. Several other drivers were glad to see Power falter, giving them some hope that they could claw their way back into contention. After all, the season is far from over. After the first practice session, however, Power was once again on top. The question would be whether or not he could stay there through qualifying and in Sunday's featured event.

Follow the jump to see if Power could make it three-for-four in Long Beach or whether Alabama-winner Helio Castroneves could continue his winning ways, or if maybe, just maybe, somebody else could step up and beat these Penske boys.

Danica Patrick at the 2010 Nationwide 300 - Click above for high-res image gallery

Despite a rather positive performance in her first outing in competition behind the wheel of stock car racer, Danica Patrick failed to wow the crowds at Daytona International Speedway last weekend after starting the race on the 15th spot on the grid. The disappointing 35th position she managed wasn't entirely her fault - Danica was unable to avoid a twelve-car pile-up on Lap 67 that was caused when Josh Wise was clipped by Colin Braun. Said Patrick after the race:

"The disappointing part is that I missed out getting the rest of my laps in - I think I had 50 laps to go - and the car was settling in and I was getting comfortable. I'm glad I got that second stint in but it's never fun to crash up a perfectly good car when it's not your fault."

The good news is that Danica was uninjured after her number seven car slammed into the outside wall. In fact, she was able to pilot the mangled machine back into the pits. The bad news, though, was that Danica's crew was unable to repair the damage and send her back out on track.

It should be noted, however, that this undesirable finish doesn't mean Danica has no future in NASCAR. After all, eventual race winner Tony Stewart - 2010 marks Stewart's third consecutive season-opening race win and his fifth in the last six years - didn't do all that much better in his first race when he finished 21st at Daytona way back in 1996. In other words, there's still plenty of racing ahead. We wish her luck.
Danica Patrick at the unveiling of the Hot Wheels "Danicar" design - Click above for high-res image gallery

Hot Wheels has jumped on board the Danica Patrick NASCAR sponsor train. What does it all mean? Well, other than an TV camera-height embroidered logo on her Nomex suit, it means that Danica's getting a Hot Wheels car of her own. The "Danicar" is apparently Hot Wheels' first celeb-designed car (she's credited as a co-designer along with the HW design team in El Segundo, a group of people who may well have the greatest jobs ever.) It's one of those pie-in-the-sky Hot Wheels originals, featuring an Indy-style nose section and cockpit that leads to a big rear-mounted engine and quad, jumbo-sized drive wheels in back.

We figured it might be a positioned as a more collectible or special-edition car (the kinds that usually retail in the $2 to $3 range), but a Hot Wheels spokesperson set us straight: When it eventually ships, the Danicar will be part of the basic 1:64-scale assortment that tempts you from the toy aisle pegs at around 99 cents a pop. It won't be limited in quantity for collectability's sake, so anyone who wants it should be able to snag one. PR from Mattel (featuring an absolutely cringe-inducing Danica sponsor-speak quote) is pasted after the jump.

Kyle Busch, reigning NASCAR Nationwide Series champ and the polesitter for today's 2010 season opener in Daytona, has a bone to pick with the media. Busch is irked that the overwhelming majority of the Nationwide Series TV coverage during the runup to the 2010 season kickoff has focused primarily (and not at all unexpectedly) on Danica Patrick's impending stock car debut. He calls the lopsided coverage "horrible," according to SceneDaily.com.

Busch has no issue with Danica herself; in fact, he's quoted as saying she's doing well. The problem, as he sees it, is that the avalanche of attention being given to Patrick is wildly disproportionate to what her actual participation in the series will be. Remember that despite all the media noise surrounding her arrival in NASCAR, Danica Patrick is a part-time driver who will appear in fewer than half the races on the 2010 Nationwide Series calendar. IndyCar remains her first priority, and she's racing that full schedule. Busch feels the media is doing the other full-time Nationwide drivers a great disservice by not affording them some of the giant spotlight that the series finds itself under this week.

While some will doubtless view Busch's comments as sour grapes, he makes a valid point in that there are surely other drivers who would stand to benefit from some media love, particularly given all the extra attention that has followed Danica to Daytona. It's also a prime opportunity for casual observers to potentially learn more about the Nationwide Series itself, which puts on an entertaining show and offers up some interesting differences from the top-tier Sprint Cup series. (Did you know that the Nationwide teams bring rain tires and windshield wipers to the dates at Mexico City and Montreal? Now you do.)

Now, Busch's media criticism may be well-intentioned, but he shouldn't look this gift horse in the mouth. The gigantic amount of press that Danica Patrick has generated for the Nationwide Series this week can only be viewed as a good thing for everyone involved. It's likely to carry over to her second race in Las Vegas two weeks from now as well. After that, Danica vanishes from NASCAR until late June in order to focus on IndyCar.

So here's the deal: Danica Patrick (and the media swarm that's following her) brings fresh sets of eyes to the NASCAR Nationwide Series this month. Eyes that might not otherwise tune in on Saturdays. What's the single best thing that Kyle Busch and all the other every-week series regulars can do? Once March rolls around and Danica heads back to her day job: keep 'em.

Danica qualified 12th for her first NASCAR race, the ARCA Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 held at Daytona Raceway. After a lot of bumping, a few runs through the infield, a skid or two, a race stoppage, a lot of time in the pits and a lot of running on the outside line, she finished the race in sixth.

Ironically her biggest off came courtesy of the also-new-to-NASCAR Nelson Piquet, Jr.. He qualified seventh and climbed up to sixth at one point, but bumped Danica and sent her down to 24th when she rejoined after having her car repaired. Piquet would find more ways to get in trouble before the chequered flag and finish in 27th.

Patrick was lauded by her entire team and a few others as well. It is said that part of the reason she spent so much time on the outside line was being nervous about such close racing, but sixth place is still sixth place. Based on that performance, the only female driver ever to win an IRL race confirmed that she will make her official NASCAR debut next weekend in the Nationwide Series race - that's the race just before the Daytona 500. There she'll get much more intense instruction that "rubbing is racing."

Breaking news! Your favorite female Indycar driver and mine, Danica Patrick, will be appearing on television February 10 sans her entire racing getup on the hit CBS show CSI: NY. Patrick will be playing - shocking, we know - a race car driver who is considered the top competitor to another star racing driver who dies under "suspicious circumstances."

Patrick's rival will be played - until he dies in an amazing car explosion in Manhattan two days before a major race, of course - by Antonio Sabato Jr. We can only assume that the resulting investigation will center around any involvement by the character played by Patrick.

Riveting television, we're sure... but we'll be a bit more interested to see if she is back on TV come February 13th for the official start of the NASCAR Nationwide Series opener in Daytona.

Danica is doing the dozen - NASCAR races, that is. The only question now is which dozen she'll be doing. While she's slated to run a pre-season ARCA race on February 6, it isn't clear whether she'll do the season opener at Daytona the following week. The concern is that she might not be ready for one of the most challenging races in the series for her first outing, and the decision will be made after the ARCA race.

Automobile says Danica will be focused on IndyCar from February to June and is expected to sit out most of the 15 races that follow Daytona, through June 26. With 35 races in total this year, Danica will have room to fit those 12 in among the 19 remaining, beginning with Daytona again on July 2.

However, according to an Associated Press report Danica's 12 races have already been selected, and they'll include marquee tracks like Dover, Charlotte, New Hampshire, and Homestead-Miami. Danica said she wants "quality seat time at a variety of facilities," which could be a way of saying she wants to properly prep herself for campaigning in 2011.

The "Will she, won't she" debate is over - Danica Patrick is headed for closed-wheel racing in 2010. Patrick will race a partial schedule in next year's National Nationwide series in the No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet, and she will also participate in one ARCA race. As a driver on the No. 7 team, she will be signed through 2011 to the JR Motorsports team that's owned by Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Rick Hendrick, Kelley Earnhardt and Tony Eury, Jr. through 2011.

This bit of news is not to say that Danica is eschewing her open-wheel career - she will also continue to race her similarly day-glo green Andretti Autosport IndyCar, also in full GoDaddy.com regalia. The NASCAR events that she will race in will be interlaced with her IndyCar schedule, before, during, and after the open-wheel season.

Danica's first stock car race will be a February 6 ARCA race in Daytona, the day before the Super Bowl. As usual, her primary sponsors will feature Patrick in a slate of new commercials during the big NFL game, and we're willing to bet that they'll have a bit of NASCAR flavor. High-res gallery of her new ride below, official press release after the jump.

Gallery: Danica Patrick NASCAR

[Source: GoDaddy.com]
Continue reading Officially Official: Danica Patrick joining NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2010

Officially Official: Danica Patrick joining NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2010 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 08 Dec 2009 13:29:00 EST.
More Danica Patrick news and this time, it's actually racing related. Last week came a report that Ms. Patrick had inked a multi-year deal with the recently restructured Andretti Autosport, putting to rest the rumors that the sometime-swimsuit model was headed to NASCAR. Well, Sporting News is now reporting that the gun might have been jumped on that conclusion. It seems that the GoDaddy pitchwoman is about to announce a deal to drive for Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s NASCAR Nationwide Series team in 2010.

SN is reporting that Danica will run the full IndyCar calendar and a limited Nationwide schedule, with GoDaddy sponsoring her stock car. According to the GoDaddy website, the formal announcement will come at 1 PM ET Tuesday, December 8. We'll be sure to watch for that announcement and update as needed.
