After spending some time roaming the Hill Country of central Texas with Mazda's new Mazda6 and CX-5 with the 2.5-liter Skyactiv engine, I got a round with the redesigned CX-9 back in Michigan. The three-row Mazda crossover comes to court in the 2013 model year with the same 3.7-liter V6 engine that we've sampled before (still making 273 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque), though the nose that wraps it has been updated with the same "Kodo" design language that marks out the CX-5 and friends.

I had quite recently spent time in our long-term Nissan Pathfinder, so I felt better equipped than usual to suss out the potential high and low points of Mazda's family-facing CUV.

Driving Notes

A combination of a responsive throttle pedal and a surprisingly lively exhaust note made the CX-9 feel immediately sportier than the CVT'd Pathfinder I had just stepped out of. The Mazda's six-speed automatic transmission was surprisingly willing to drop gears and pile on the revs when I put my foot to the floor for a pass on the highway, and I actually never really felt prodded to use the manual mode as a result. Don't get me wrong, the CX-9 isn't "fast" in an objective sense, but it definitely feels adequately powerful for a largish 4,500-pound crossover. (Those seeking real speed with three rows would still prefer the Ford Explorer Sport or Dodge Durango in V8 trim, I'd wager.)

True to form for Mazda, the CX-9 feels a shade sprightlier in terms of handling than does the bulk of its competitive set. Sitting in the drivers seat for the first time, I was actually a little shocked at how small in diameter the steering wheel is. Better yet, the front end of the large vehicle moves promptly when guided by this sporty wheel, turning in with a quickness that belies the long wheelbase, and offering a shade more road feedback than is typical of this class. I'm not sure how many buyers really care about a kind of "athletic" steering feel when selecting their next kid-wagon, but the Mazda would seem to be the top-of-class here.

Overall fit and finish of our CX-9 Grand Touring-spec interior felt nice - I particularly liked the kind of micro-suede door inserts - if a little bit simple. There's still more hard-plastic surfacing in the CX-9 than I'd gotten used to in our long-term Nissan, and far fewer enticing pieces of technology. Mazda is offering a new-for-2013, 5.8-inch display with which to negotiate the navigation and media controls, but the interface simply serves to make the CX-9 feel slightly less out of date than it would with the older setup. And the Mazda didn't have the near-luxury feeling that the plusher, gizmo-laden Pathfinder does.

There was more interruption from wind and tire noise in the CX-9 than in other similarly sized crossovers and SUVs I've been in lately, too. Just a shade louder, mind you, but there was enough wind noise at 70 miles per hour on the highway that I was forced to notice that I didn't like Mazda's stereo as much as I had the Pathfinder's. (Maybe because the Pathfinder's quieter cabin provided a better sound stage?)

While the third-row seating of the CX-9 is clearly not made for six-foot, five-inch guys like me, I did have a seat in the second row to see how it measured up. Beyond feeling a tiny bit lacking in headroom, I found the three-seat-wide second row a place that I wouldn't have a problem camping out in over goodly distances. My legs and knees had space to move around, and the seat bottoms weren't overly short or too stiff. In other words: Your tweenage kids should fit just fine.

My conclusion about the CX-9 in today's market is a little mixed. I feel as though most shoppers in this segment are going to want more content, a cushier ride or more interior volume than Mazda is offering us. On the other hand, I don't think that I've tested a three-row crossover that's quite so fun to drive as this one. That strikes me as a core competency that's not super valuable for the segment, though it might be more of a niche (driver-focused family haulers) than I understand.

Introduced in 2007, the Mazda CX-9 is a seven-passenger full-size crossover sharing its platform with the Ford Edge. Now entering its seventh year in showrooms, Mazda has again treated it to a mild mid-cycle facelift (it was also updated for the 2010 model year).

Physically speaking, the front and rear fascia receive familiar Kodo design enhancements that better align the CUV with its siblings (namely, the CX-5 and Mazda6). Inside, the cabin is the automaker's next-generation infotainment and audio package with a 5.8-inch touch-screen display, Bluetooth connectivity (audio and phone) and navigation (based on TomTom technology). Other audio enhancements include HD Radio, a Pandora interface and SMS audio receipt and delivery.

The 2013 Mazda CX-9 is in showrooms today. Scroll down for the official press blast.
Continue reading 2013 Mazda CX-9 gets all Kodo-fied

2013 Mazda CX-9 gets all Kodo-fied originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 29 Nov 2012 18:21:00 EST.
Mazda is slowly but surely wiping its smiley Nagare design language from the faces of its automobiles, and it appears that the seven-passenger CX-9 is the next to get the bolder Kodo-influenced treatment. The 2013 CX-9 you see here will officially bow at the Australian International Motor Show in mid-October, but Mazda has released a few preliminary images and details regarding the big CUV's refresh.

Now, as much as we like the design of the new CX-5 crossover and Mazda6 sedan, we aren't quite sure if we love the way the new Kodo lines flow onto the CX-9's larger body. The more we stare at the images in the gallery above, the more we start to like it, but this is indeed a case where we'll need to see the finished product in person before making any final judgments. We can't yet see what sort of changes have been applied to the rear end or the interior, but new details up front include LED running lights in the headlamp clusters and bolder, more pronounced lines around the foglamp housings.

Mum's the word about any other new-for-2013 changes, and Mazda states that the current CX-9's 3.7-liter V6 and six-speed automatic will carry over, likely mated to both front- and all-wheel drive.

We'll no doubt receive more details closer to the car's official unveiling in Australia next month, but for now, scroll down to read the official press blast and scroll through the high-res image gallery to take in the Niner's new schnoz for yourself.
Continue reading 2013 Mazda CX-9 unveiled ahead of Aussie debut

2013 Mazda CX-9 unveiled ahead of Aussie debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 18 Sep 2012 09:27:00 EST.

All of the auto industry's big-time players are making large three-row crossovers these days, so the segment has become extremely competitive. With stalwarts like the Honda Pilot, Chevrolet Traverse and Ford Explorer at the top of the sales charts, how does a smaller automaker like Mazda compete? Two oft-repeated words: Zoom-Zoom.

The Mazda CX-9 checks the same boxes as its competition: a beefy V6 engine, seating for up to seven, available all-wheel drive and a bevy of technology options. Those features are all part of the price of admission, but to make headway in this crowded field, that's not enough to cut it. On the market since 2007, we wanted to find out the 4,546-pound CX-9 still has the engineering mojo to dance to the head of the pack, so we grabbed the keys to a loaded Grand Touring AWD and headed for the floor.
Continue reading 2012 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring AWD [w/video]

2012 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring AWD [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 30 Jan 2012 11:57:00 EST.
Cars.com recently lined up seven new vehicles for a $37,000 SUV shootout. The 2012 Chevrolet Traverse, 2012 Dodge Durango, 2012 Ford Explorer, 2012 Honda Pilot, 2012 Kia Sorento, 2011 Mazda CX-9 and 2011 Toyota Highlander all squared off against one another in a range of evaluations, including a one-day highway drive and family testing.

If you happen to be the deductive type, you may have noticed that the list above includes a fair number of genuine crossovers. Vehicles like the Chevrolet Traverse and Mazda CX-9 bear little resemblance to the body-on-frame bruisers of old, and even models like the 2012 Explorer and 2012 Durango have evolved out of their traditional shells.

But when the dust settled, it was Honda's 2012 Pilot that took top honors thanks to its high level of amenities, spacious interior and clever storage solutions, despite the fact that reviewers found issue with road noise and exterior styling. Perhaps most surprising is the fact that the 2012 Explorer tied for sixth place with the 2012 Sorento. Ouch. Head over to Cars.com to see the full evaluation, and vote for your favorite in our poll.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation (read: not a recall) into the braking effectiveness of 2008 Mazda CX-9 crossovers. The reason? NHTSA received data from Mazda indicating a "high number" of warranty claims and reports related to the vehicle's braking system.

The NHTSA probe will examine reports that leaking brake fluid could degrade braking effectiveness of approximately 37,000 Mazda CX-9s. NHTSA says no injuries or accidents have been reported in connection with the CX-9's braking system, but the Agency has released this statement: "When brake fluid leaks into the vacuum booster the driver can experience reduced brake effectiveness which can result in extended stopping distance."

This preliminary investigation by NHTSA is the first step in a process that could lead to a recall if regulators determine the safety-related issue needs to be addressed by the automaker.
Mazda CX-9 being investigated for brake fluid leak originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 15 Aug 2011 14:01:00 EST.
We here at Autoblog love seat warmers, and we're glad to see that more and more automakers are fitting this lovely amenity as either standard or optional equipment across their full range of vehicles. However, like all electrical gadgets, occasional glitches are known to pop up every so often, and Mazda is now recalling many of its 2010 model year CX-9 crossovers due to faulty seat heater units.

According to NHTSA, the front seat heater units in the CX-9 can overheat in extremely cold conditions due to insufficient electrical grounding, which can cause the seat cushions to burn or even catch fire. (Yikes!) To fix this potential hazard, dealers will install additional ground harnesses to the heater control system, and may even replace the seat heater control unit, if necessary.

Owners can contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500 for more information. The official safety recall will begin around March 9, 2010. Follow the jump to read the full details in NHTSA's press release.

Mazda's new CEO introduced the CX-9 and its raft of changes to a U.S. audience at the New York Auto Show today. The swoopy lines picked up from the Nagare are said to be "the embodiment of emotion." And that's right, if you get can worked up for the new 20-inch wheels, bigger side mirrors and "red garnish, which compliments the look of the front fascia." Inside there's new fabric, new stitched leather, piano black inserts and no shortage of chrome accents. Power to haul your loads remains at 273 hp and 250 lb-ft from the CUV's 3.7-liter V6. You can read about all it and more in the press release after the jump, and see it in the gallery of high-res photos below.

Gallery: New York: 2010 Mazda CX-9

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Jonathon Ramsey, Alex Núñez / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading New York: Mazda CX-9 gets "bolder"

New York: Mazda CX-9 gets "bolder" originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 Apr 2009 16:57:00 EST.
In addition to U.S. premieres for its new Mazdaspeed3 and reworked CX-7, Mazda will have a global debut in the form of a "heavily revised" CX-9 at next month's New York Auto Show.

For 2010, the three-row crossover will receive a riff on the controversial "smiley face" front graphic that has already been shown for 2010 on the Mazda3, MX-5 Miata, and CX-7. Judging by the supplied image, changes include a new front fascia integrating the aforementioned five-point grille, along with different lighting units and exterior mirrors. In addition to the exterior fettling, Mazda is promising new options and safety features, along with improved driving dynamics (already a CX-9 strong suit).

We'll likely have to wait until press days to learn further specifics, but for now, check out Mazda's official NY preview press release after the jump.
All Smiles: Updated 2010 Mazda CX-9 headed for New York originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Mar 2009 11:28:00 EST.
Nearly 31,000 Mazda CX-9 crossovers are being recalled to repair an issue with the driver's seat. Models affected were built during the 2007-2009 model years. According to Mazda North American Operations, improper routing of wires under the driver's seat cushion can lead to a short-circuit that activates the power-adjustment mechanism. This could lead to an inadvertent change in the seating position, height adjustment, or seat back recline while the vehicle is in motion. According to Mazda, dealers will be able to fix the potential problem with cable ties and replacement parts. If you are a late-model CX-9 owner, check your mailbox after the notices go out on March 9.

Gallery: 2009 Mazda CX-9

[Source: Automotive News, subs. req'd]
REPORT: Mazda recalling almost 31,000 CX-9s over faulty seats originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 Feb 2009 11:28:00 EST. While it has aged gracefully, the Japanese automaker is readying a facelift for 2010, and some early mules have just been caught by spy shooters roaming in wintery Michigan.

While the prototypes have been quite heavily disguised, it is still possible to see that beneath their anti-spy cloaks, changes are taking shape. Significantly upsized air intakes have taken up residence up front, and tape around the rear lenses could indicate that the taillamp clusters may be altered as well.
If you keep up with the print mags, it would be easy to think that every journalist, PR flack and blogger loves Mazda's CX-9. Automobile Magazine made a spot for it on their All-Stars list, Motor Trend named it Sport Utility of the Year, Car & Driver thinks its one of the 5 Best Trucks of 2008, SEAMO crowned it their Family Car of the Year and USA TODAY even went as far as calling it "about perfect." We put 380 miles on the 7-seater in our best attempt to debunk the CX-9's mythical aura of SUV perfection and found most of the legend true.

Gallery: Review: 2008 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring

All photos Copyright (C)2008 Chris Tutor / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Review: 2008 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring

Review: 2008 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 Aug 2008 12:00:00 EST.
The current Mazdaspeed6 has good performance, an attainable price point, and aggressive (if slightly homely) looks, but it hasn't exactly set the world on fire on the showroom floor. Part of the problem is that car buyers can get 268 hp Camrys and Accords with near-equal performance and superior fuel economy. The Speed6 weighs as much as a Sherman tank, too. We were hoping that the next edition of the Speed6 would succeed where the current generation didn't, but it doesn't look like there will be a next time. Mazda6 program manager Ryuichi Umeshita points out that the next 6 will be larger in the US than in other regions, which means Mazda would be paying for two different development programs. Any Speed6 would play for a smaller audience too, since the US edition would need different tuning than Europe/Australia and vice-versa. In the end, Umeshita basically said that he doesn't see big enough potential demand to make a Speed edition worth Mazda's time and money.

On the bright side, even though the next Mazda6 will be roomier and more refined than the model it replaces, it will also likely keep its zoom zoom character. The brilliant engineers at Mazda took an MPS minivan platform and created the large yet fun to drive CX-9, so it's fairly safe to expect good things of the next 6. Besides, if Mazda can wrestle from Ford the same 273 hp 3.7L V6 used in the CX-9, then any turbo talk will likely be in-material anyway.
Out of a possible 100 points, journalists at the event gave the SUV a score of 91, putting it way ahead of the 32 other vehicles from which to choose.

The contenders were rated on attributes that included safety, capacity, accessibility, value, amenities, ergonomics, NVH and styling. Personally, as both a family man and a member of the automotive media, my vote went to the new Dodge Caravan overall. It definitely loses out to the CX-9 on looks, but as a kid-hauler, it obviously ruled in all other categories. So how does a minivan with dual DVD players, seating for seven, a fold-away table, hookups for video games and wireless headphones lose to an SUV with many of the same options, but costs as much as $8,000 more?

After driving each car at the event, journalists were asked to submit their ratings for the vehicle on all the above attributes. We were told by someone in the know that Autoblog's rating sheet was one of very few submitted for the Caravan. Which means it didn't get driven a whole lot. We're not suggesting any wrongdoing, just saying that a bunch of automotive journalists with limited time and miles of twisty roads to drive will rarely choose a relatively slow and ugly minivan over a sleek, luxury-like SUV. Unless their boss, (that's you, John) asks them to.

Hey, John, next time, dang it, I'm driving the R32 instead of the Rogue and the CX-9 instead of the Caravan.

[Source: Mazda]
Continue reading CX-9 wins again: SEAMO Family Car of the Year

CX-9 wins again: SEAMO Family Car of the Year originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Nov 2007 19:35:00 EST. Mazda helped explain the decision by saying that minivan marketing practices put too much downward pressure on prices and therefore limit profits for automakers. We think Mazda could reverse that trend by doing what we called for years ago: adding some "Zoom-Zoom" to the segment with a better handling, lighter-on-its-feet shuttle like the new MPV. Mazda has instead decided to focus on crossovers, much like every other manufacturer with the exception of Chrysler. Apparently SUV/CUV buyers will still accept the premium pricing that nets higher profitability for the automakers. There may be a fly in that ointment, however.

Story continues after the jump.

[Source: Automotive News, sub req]
Continue reading Mazda dealers: CX-9 sales don't need Zoom-Zoom push

Mazda dealers: CX-9 sales don't need Zoom-Zoom push originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Feb 2007 15:32:00 EST. According to the boys and girls from Auburn Hills, the market for Soccer Mom-mobiles will likely hold steady, and they hope to enjoy an even larger piece of the pie with their new Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country. But many automakers are picking up their ball and leaving the minivan market, and this interview with Robert Davis, Mazda North America's senior VP lays out the reasons why most automakers aren't willing to fight Chrysler in the segment.

Davis cites the fact that domestic automakers market minivans in such a way that it puts downward pressure on prices, which in turn hurts resale value and decreases the amount of money they can make for a company. CUVs like the CX-9, however, can command premium prices, retain their resale value better and are able to be sold with fewer incentives. Despite the fact that a new Mazda MPV was being developed for the Japanese domestic market (see the new model above, which happens to look great), Mazda officials decided against engineering a version for the U.S. market in favor of the CX-9, which is largely built using components shared with the Ford Edge CUV. The fact that Davis reveals the Edge and CX-9 have so much in common yet look nothing alike gives us hope that Ford can indeed produce two cars using the same mechanicals that aren't badge-engineered versions of each other.

[Source: AutoWeek]
Why did Mazda axe the MPV with this in the wings? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Feb 2007 18:18:00 EST.
Back in January, we were among the first to leak that Mazda was piggybacking on General Motors' "GooglePontiac" campaign to clandestinely swipe some of the latter's advertising buying power. Buying Pontiac AdWords wasa brilliantly cost-effective move, though critics derided the practice as deceitful.

Well, Mazda is now working up-front and directly with the Internet search engine meisters, this time promotingtheir new CX-7 crossover via Google Earth with the "Mazda CX-7 EarthSearch Sweepstakes Game." Via the pressrelease, we learn that the CX-7's catchphrase will be: 'The SUV You Never Saw Coming[TM].'

The contest asks consumers to visit www.NeverSawItComing.com, wherethey will view a brief video that will give the their first clue as to the CX-7's mystery location. Would-be winnerswill then use Google Earth to figure out how to locate the CX-7 via a series of progressively difficult clues.

The Grand Prize is obviously the keys to a CX-7, but contestants will also have a shot at taking home prizes likean Apple Powerbook, a Magellan Roadmate 800 Sat-Nav, or a 30-gig Video iPod.

In related news, Mazda has now opened the books on its CX-7 configurator here.

Set to go onsale in early 2007, the CX-9 has the largest third-row seat in its class and a lot of room for ingress into theback-back seat.

The CX-9 will also feature Ford's new six-speed auto and a derivation of the BlueOval's new 3.5L V6, which Mazda is giving a preliminary power rating of 250 hp. That's a conservativeestimate, expect that number to rise before the CX-9 hits the street. Available in Sport, Touring and Grand Touringtrim, the CX-9 will offer some degree of Zoom-Zoom at each level. All models gets Dynamic Stability Control, RollStability Control and ABS with brakeforce distribution.

GM is now making inroads into the large unibody SUVmarket with the Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave, and now Mazda is adding its CX-9 to the mix. We'veshown you both the Outlook and CX-9 at theshow... so which would you choose if you needed three rows and preferred a V6?

After the jumpthere's more pics and a press release for you viewing pleasure...
Continue reading New York Auto Show: Mazda CX-9 - Zoom with a view

New York Auto Show: Mazda CX-9 - Zoom with a view originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Apr 2006 11:58:00 EST.
