Cadillac's CTS Coupe and Sport Wagon are two of the most distinctive designs to come out of a mass-market brand in some time, and we're big devotees to both here at Autoblog. Predictably, the two models attract a much smaller slice of the North American market than the four-door sedan, but Cadillac says it remains committed to offering both a two-door and a load-lugger in its lineup. However, that doesn't mean such future models will wear CTS badging.

According to Car and Driver, Cadillac is undecided, but one or both bodystyles could migrate to the smaller ATS platform. While neither of the two CTS variants has been any great shakes sales-wise (Cadillac does say the wagon has outsold its BMW 3 Series equivalent), the models are seen as important tools to woo shoppers - conquest sales in particular.

We might add that since General Motors remains committed to the idea of making Cadillac a global brand, a smaller coupe and wagon model could give the marque entry into larger volume segments in Europe. For its part, C/D expects Cadillac to position a coupe between the ATS and next CTS, mimicking pricing and hierarchy strategies at Audi and soon, BMW. The publication also predicts that a wagon will stay in the CTS family, as it "better meets the needs of older, richer luxo-wagon buyers," noting that ATS wagon intenders could likely be wooed into the SRX anyhow.

From the second we laid eyes on the production CTS Sportwagon, we dreamed of a V-badged 556 horsepower, supercharged V8 variant. While the move makes sense to us based on awesomeness alone, General Motors has to come up with one of those dreaded business cases to make the anabolic wagon happen. Bob Lutz has been a vocal proponent for the CTS-V wagon, but even the Maximum one didn't seem to have much faith that the Supersportwagon would happen. Lutz did, however, say that if there were significant demand, the CTS-V wagon could see the light of day. If a report from Straightline is to believed, the General may be encouraged enough based on initial interest in the Sportwagon to build the V variant of our dreams.

Straightline quotes GM sources who say the super wagon has been given the green-light for production, and Inside Line reiterated as much on Twitter. However, GM hasn't announced anything official as of right now, so we'll refrain from picturing ourselves doing grocery hauling powerslides in what could be hottest wagon since... well... ever.

In Europe, the humble station wagon holds a big-time slice of the family driver demographic, partly because ridiculous petrol prices make big SUVs and crossovers far too uneconomical. Americans, on the other hand, have a fundamental problem with the station wagon. We're not sure if the wagon is uncool because it was our parents' preferred family vehicle or if the aesthetics of it are just too boxy for our fashion forward culture. The only subset of the American public who has consistently called for more wagons are automotive enthusiasts, though even we seldom seem to vote for the Griswald Family Truckster with our pocketbooks.

Cadillac is all too aware of America's disdain for the wagon, as evidenced by the fact that General Motors' luxury brand has never built a squat two box for the U.S. market. That changes for 2010 as the Wreath and Crest begins production of its 2010 Cadillac CTS Sportwagon. This Caddy begins life with hot-to-trot sheetmetal and the underpinnings of the excellent CTS sedan, but does it have the chutzpah to change our less than flattering opinions about the station wagon? We gave the CTS Sportwagon some time in the Autoblog Garage to see if the first-ever U.S.-market Caddy wagon has the goods to make Americans stop their loathing and get to loading. Click on the jump to find out.

Gallery: Review: 2010 Cadillac CTS Sportwagon

Photos copyright (C)2009 Chris Shunk / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Review: 2010 Cadillac CTS Sportwagon eats up cargo, swallows open road

Review: 2010 Cadillac CTS Sportwagon eats up cargo, swallows open road originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 03 Sep 2009 11:58:00 EST.
With the tagline "America, we have re-ignition," Cadillac is out to reintroduce itself to buyers. After bursting out of their underground bunker, the spot showcases all of the models in the line - and at least one to come. The ad has begun to hit the airwaves, and it features what appears to be the production version of Cadillac's much-anticipated CTS Coupe.
