Cadillac's CTS Coupe and Sport Wagon are two of the most distinctive designs to come out of a mass-market brand in some time, and we're big devotees to both here at Autoblog. Predictably, the two models attract a much smaller slice of the North American market than the four-door sedan, but Cadillac says it remains committed to offering both a two-door and a load-lugger in its lineup. However, that doesn't mean such future models will wear CTS badging.

According to Car and Driver, Cadillac is undecided, but one or both bodystyles could migrate to the smaller ATS platform. While neither of the two CTS variants has been any great shakes sales-wise (Cadillac does say the wagon has outsold its BMW 3 Series equivalent), the models are seen as important tools to woo shoppers - conquest sales in particular.

We might add that since General Motors remains committed to the idea of making Cadillac a global brand, a smaller coupe and wagon model could give the marque entry into larger volume segments in Europe. For its part, C/D expects Cadillac to position a coupe between the ATS and next CTS, mimicking pricing and hierarchy strategies at Audi and soon, BMW. The publication also predicts that a wagon will stay in the CTS family, as it "better meets the needs of older, richer luxo-wagon buyers," noting that ATS wagon intenders could likely be wooed into the SRX anyhow.

Cadillac has just spilled the beans on how it plans to keep its MVP fresh for the 2012 model year. The recipe for the 2012 CTS lineup hinges on a new Touring package (from $2,065) that adds many of the features of the high-performance CTS-V range without adding any actual power.

Offered on all three bodystyles, the CTS Touring pack includes such niceties as a buttoned-up suspension (presumably not the actual magnetic ride control setup at the CTS-V given the price), faux suede inserts on the seats and steering wheel, Sapele wood trim and metal pedal pads. The extensive package also includes exterior touches like HID headlamps, dual exhaust, a darker grille finish, different wheel packages and a decklid spoiler cribbed from the V.

There are some equipment differences with the Touring Package depending on whether you stick with the base 3.0-liter V6 or opt for the 3.6-liter. The 3.0-liter package costs less at $2,065, but the 3.6-liter Touring group ($2,810) also includes grippy Recaro seats and larger 19-inch wheels shod in either summer or all-season tires. While we'd much rather have the 556-horsepower, 6.2-liter V8 of the real-deal CTS-V, either package seems like a screaming deal for all of the extra equipment.

For 2012, General Motors has also updated the entire CTS range with Bluetooth as standard fit and added blind spot assist and rain-sensing wipers to the options list. New paint colors include Opulent Blue Metallic, Black Diamond Tri-Coat and Mocha Steel Metallic. Pricing starts at $36,790 for the sedan, $39,590 for the rakish coupe and $39,890 for the Sport Wagon.
Continue reading 2012 Cadillac CTS gets new V-Series-like Touring option

2012 Cadillac CTS gets new V-Series-like Touring option originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Dec 2011 15:59:00 EST.

What you see here is a list of the cars most often purchased by senior citizens, and thus, the fact that the Lincoln Town Car, Buick Lucerne and Cadillac DTS are the top three spots should come as no shock whatsoever. But look at the fourth place listing - the Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon. That's right, General Motors' Art & Science cargo-hauler accounted for a whopping 74.2 percent of <strike>all senior citizen car sales</strike> CTS Sport Wagon sales between 2009 and 2010. That's a whole lot of cool grandpas.

Scan further down the list and you'll see other no-surprise entries like the Chevrolet Impala, Buick LaCrosse and Toyota Avalon. But then there's the Porsche Panamera, which takes the 11th place spot, <strike>accounting for 53.3 percent of sales to these 65+ drivers</strike> meaning that 53.3 percent of all Panameras sold were to the 65+ crowd. Even more cool grandpas.

The TrueCar.com study also ranked the top brands for senior citizen buyers during 2009 and 2010, with Buick, Lincoln, Cadillac and Chrysler taking the top spots with 57.5, 47.7, 44.0 and 36.1 percent of total sales going to senior citizens, respectively. Only 29.5 percent of Porsche sales are to the older crowd, putting it in seventh place. See the full results of this study in our image gallery below.

What Would Grandpa Drive? In fact, it is now a world-class luxury sports sedan. We've also been blessed (yes, blessed) by the arrival of the Cadillac CTS Wagon, which is available in both the enjoyable 3.6-liter flavor and the downright orgasmic V-for-Vendetta edition.

The current wagon is a brand-new varietal of the CTS family. There was no first generation CTS Wagon. Or was there?

Evan McCausland of Automobile fame ambled across a General Motors-owned parking lot that serves as a final resting place of discarded project vehicles. Parked amongst the unwanted heaps of GM iron was a wagon that caught McCausland's eye. More specifically, it appeared to be a first-generation Cadillac CTS Wagon.

Clearly, the engineers at GM have had a wagon on the brains for years. We, however, are thankful they waited for the current model to bring this plan to fruition.

2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe - Click above for high-res image gallery

At this morning's XTS Platinum and CTS-V Coupe debut here at the Detroit Motor Show, newly appointed brand manager Bryan Nesbitt announced to the media that that all Cadillac models will receive V-Series and Platinum models. However, during the media scrum that followed the conference, we sought clarification from Cadillac spokesman David Caldwell, and he stated that future Cadillacs will receive a V-Series or a Platinum model. Thus, if you had visions of an Escalade-V dancing in your head, well... don't.

The prevailing logic behind which models will get a V or a P will depend on the model's market segment and inherent sportiness. As Caldwell explained it to us, a model like the CTS has a foot in both worlds (and could probably pull off both), but models like the SRX or Escalade lend themselves more to the heightened creature comforts of the Platinum experience. Some Autobloggers remain a bit foggy on why General Motors' luxury brand needs what is effectively a double-prestige trim level (shouldn't all Cadillacs be posh by definition?), but we do appreciate the added accouterments all the same.

And as to the possibility of a CTS-V Sport Wagon? Well, we got a wink-wink, nudge-nudge when we suggested to Cadillac that we'd like to see it, and judging by the smiles all 'round, it's all but certain that we'll be seeing its debut on the show circuit later this year.

The Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon represents a whole new direction for the Cadillac brand, as the Wreath and Crest begins selling its first production wagon in the States. General Motors is crossing its fingers and hoping for the best with the CTS Sport Wagon, since Americans have shunned wagons over the past couple decades. But with good looking proportions and the soul of a CTS, it has a fighting chance to make a name for itself.

Cadillac is readying the marketing blitz for the CTS Sportwagon as we speak, and the beautiful Kate Walsh is back behind the wheel, hawking the Caddywagon in high heels. Hit the jump to view the first commercial for the CTS Sport Wagon where Walsh compares the newest Cadillac to the perfect dress.
Few icons are as synonymous with the American automobile as Cadillac and the station wagon, so it may come as a surprise that Cadillac has never officially offered a station wagon to American customers in its 106-year long history. Sure, there was the SRX crossover that came rather close, and the enormous Escalade SUV, as well. Cadillac even offers the BLS as a wagon, but that's only for overseas customers. Depending on which way you look at it, the new Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon may not be it either. Even with its edgy styling, the extended-roof CTS blurs the line between wagon and hatchback.

The initial trio of CTS Sport Wagon shots released last month may not have shown the new Caddy's best side, but Cadillac has now put out a whole slew of new images which, in our opinion at least, better portray the sharp lines we took in at Pebble Beach and are sure to catch people's attention in mall parking lots and soccer fields of America after it goes on sale here next spring. Check out the new images in the gallery below, and our live shots from Monterey in the gallery below that to see for yourself.
