The 2012 Toyota Camry and 2012 Cadillac CTS have joined the ranks of vehicles that have earned the coveted five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The vehicles mark the 15th and 16th models to nab the top rating under the tougher NHTSA crash test standards enacted for 2011 models. Last year, the 2011 Camry took home four stars in the evaluations. Toyota reminds us that the 2012 Camry is built with high-strength steel to help protect the passenger cell against deflection in the event of an accident, and that the vehicle comes standard with 10 airbags, all of which contribute to the new model's superior score.

The Fiat 500, meanwhile, didn't fare so well under the range of crash evaluations. The tiny hatchback collected just three stars overall. The side-impact test was particularly cruel to the Italian compact, with NHTSA awarding the vehicle two stars in that category - a somewhat surprising result considering that Fiat went to the trouble of redesigning the 500 for U.S. crash test compatibility. The 500 finds itself in the company of the Dodge Caliber and outgoing Ford Escape as the only models tested so far to receive the three-star designation.
Fiat 500 nets three-star NHTSA safety rating; Toyota Camry and Cadillac CTS get five originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Dec 2011 18:00:00 EST.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has released a list of 74 vehicles for the 2012 model year that it plans on crash testing. The vehicles include 42 passengers cars, 22 SUVs, eight trucks and two vans. NHTSA claims the list represents about 81 percent of the 2012 model year vehicles that will be on sold in the U.S., and further claims it will be performing rollover tests on 92 percent of the 2012 fleet.

You may remember that NHTSA released the first round of results from its new, tougher crash tests in October 2010, and that first batch of vehicles didn't fare too well. It's been almost one year exactly, which has given automakers ample time to tweak their vehicles in the hopes of achieving that coveted overall score of five stars.

Of the 74 vehicles being tested this year, we're particularly interested in a few like the Ford Transit Connect (we expect a fun crash video from that one) and a number of EVs including the 2012 Coda Sedan we just took for a Quick Spin, the Ford Focus BEV, little Mitsubishi i and Toyota Prius V. Other notable crash candidates are the Toyota Camry, which as a 2011 model could only manage a best overall score of four stars after some mid-model year tweaks raised it from three stars, and the 2012 Passat, which needs five stars to become the volume seller that Volkswagen hopes it will be after a complete redesign and significantly lower price.

Thirteen enter, six leave ... with Top Safety Pick awards. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety spent some time driving (and smashing) a big group of small cars. Six of those cars received top honors from the IIHS by scoring a rating of "Good" across the board. The 2012 Ford Focus, 2012 Honda Civic sedan, 2011 Hyunda Elantra, 2011 Lexus CT200h, 2011 Nissan Juke and 2011 Toyota Prius are all the small-car place to be in the event of an accident.

This crop of small cars are also quite fuel efficient. All vehicles in the top six offer a version that gets at least 40 miles per gallon on the highway.

The rest of the vehicles tested faired well. Only the older Suzuki SX4 and Dodge Caliber received "Mediocre" ratings in some categories. Every car tested, however, received multiple "Good" ratings. Click past the jump to watch the IIHS talk about about the small car crash tests.
2011 Chevrolet Cruze Crash Testing - Click above for high-res image gallery

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is set to debut a new testing procedure for the 2011 model year that will make it more difficult for new cars and trucks to earn the government agency's coveted five-star safety rating. Just as interestingly, the recent influx of electronic safety gadgets, such as lane departure and collision warning, will be included in the testing regiment as well.

NHTSA will calculate one simple-to-understand grade for each vehicle based on how it manages to perform throughout the agency's testing. While the revised parameters promise to make safety-minded comparison shopping between new automobiles a bit easier, it also means that pre-2011 ratings will not be directly comparable to the new ones.

A total of 55 new 2011 cars, trucks and minivans (including the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze seen above undergoing GM's internal safety testing) will be tested by NHTSA with the new procedures, and the list is made up of both brand new models and some of the more popular nameplates Americans seem most likely to purchase in large numbers next year. You can check out NHTSA's official release and the initial list of what cars will be subjected to this new testing regime after the jump.
Say you and three of your closest buddies find yourselves out for a leisurely Sunday cruise on your motorbikes, when you stumble upon the old schoolyard merry-go-round. Following an intense session of cerebral activity, and the obligatory drawing of straws, it is decided that all the necessary ingredients are on hand for a primitive recreation of the Gravitron. We know, it can feel like so long between carnival visits sometimes.

Moral of the story: First, if you are the guy in the red pants, it's officially time to begin the new friend hunt. Second, if you haven't yet found a use for motorcycles, open your mind, they really are very multifaceted. When was the last time you utilized your car to create a backyard, makeshift carnival ride? Wait, don't answer that, just hit the jump to watch the complete Moto-Go-Round experience. Thanks for the tip, Duy.

Over the course of Bob Lutz' tenure at General Motors, one of his major goals was globalizing the production process. As Lutz tells it, the Pontiac GTO was the first global vehicle born of his labors, with development work being done in both Australia and North America. But the GTO, and its follow-up, the Pontiac G8/Holden Commodore, were niche products sold in limited numbers in limited markets. The real test of global product development comes when it's applied to high-volume mainstream products.

That's were the Epsilon II and Delta II architectures come into play. Epsilon is GM's mid-large platform (D/E segment) while Delta is the compact (C segment) platform. We've already seen the Epsilon II here in America, underpinning the Buick LaCrosse, but the Chevrolet Cruze proved to be a tougher nut to crack. One of the most difficult challenges in the global production strategy is the differing safety standards around the world, along with the guidelines imposed by non-governmental bodies like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Creating a platform that can live up to all of these standards without being absurdly heavy is a problem. Find out how GM tackled the problem and found a solution after the jump.

NHTSA side-impact pole test - click above to watch the video

Not satisfied with cars that manage crash forces well enough to avoid spilling your drink, and engines that run so clean they'll barely asphyxiate ants, a new crash test is reportedly coming in the works from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Along with the test will come new dummies and new testing equipment, all of which means it's likely to have a big impact on future car designs. The side-impact pole test will simulate side collisions with objects like trees or telephone poles, a type of accident that current side-impact tests don't accurately simulate.

According to The New York Times, the new test will use a 10-inch round pole that will collide with the car at speeds of up to 20 mph. A 75-degree angle will be used, and the point of impact will be just aft of the A-pillar. Naturally, automakers won't have to pass the test all at once, the standard will be phased in. For 2011, 20 percent of an automaker's fleet will have to meet the standard and by 2014, the pole crash standard will be at 100 percent - all new cars will have to comply.

It's a change that could potentially change the face of auto design, the same way pedestrian impact standards in Europe have led to some peculiar front sheetmetal. Materials changes may also be employed to meet the regulation, with additional high-strength steel being substituted. The more conventional metals currently used are easier to form, while stronger metals require all sorts of hot pressing and tempering to be put into shape. Manufacturing cost will go up, which means prices will probably also increase, or profit will decrease while prices hold steady. Safe cars are a laudable goal, but how safe is safe enough? Follow the jump to see a video of how Ford's 2010 Mustang GT convertible and coupe models fare, then let us know what you think by leaving a comment.
Vehicle safety is still largely a question of the loose nut behind the wheel, but the F-150 does come with a raft of safety gear. Acronyms and names abound, from RSC (Roll Stability Control), to K-bags and Safety Canopy curtain airbags, it all helps the pickup earn five stars in front- and side-impact crash testing. We'd expect no less from Ford, considering the F-Series is a perennial sales champ, and probably the most pivotal vehicle Dearborn makes. The '09 F-series has been racking up accolades and these safety ratings are yet another feather in its cap. With competitors nipping at its heels, the F-Series cannot be anything other than stellar, and for now, with the long list of huzzahs, it appears to have met the challenge. Press release after the jump.

[Source: Ford]
Continue reading 5 Stars for '09 Ford F-150

5 Stars for '09 Ford F-150 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 08:28:00 EST.
Reminding us once again that there's more than meets the eye when shopping for a vehicle are recent impact tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety that measure how much it costs to fix a vehicle after after a low-speed accident. Sure, we're all interested in safety and styling, but we should also be concerned with how much these low-speed impacts will cost to repair. The winner of the testing was the Ford Focus, which scored light damage all the way around. The IIHS heaped praise on Ford for designing a bumper that can truly take a bump -- a novel idea.

Amazingly, some small cars like the Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Prius and VW Rabbit cost up to a third of the car's worth to fix from damage resulting from a minor impact. That's a big problem for any car, but especially so for those sold on the merits of economy. To prove that it's not too difficult for auto manufacturers to design a better bumper, the IIHS made a few simple changes to a Prius that didn't affect the looks of the car. After retesting, it made it through the impact tests with a fraction of the damage. For the complete rundown on the testing procedures and results, click past the break.

Gallery: 2008 Ford Focus SES Coupe

[Source: IIHS]
Continue reading IIHS praises Ford Focus for cheap crash repairs

IIHS praises Ford Focus for cheap crash repairs originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 09 Sep 2008 12:59:00 EST.
Small, fuel efficient vehicles are all the rage right now, and many SUV owners are willing to do just about anything to get out of their gas guzzling transportation. Problem is, if you do get a new MINI or Yaris, you still have to drive it out into the automotive wilderness. SUVs and big pickup trucks are still omnipresent, and driving a vehicle that barely comes up to the bumper on an F-150 just doesn't look that safe. Automakers will tell you that their new go-karts get five stars in crash tests and that they're as safe as ever, but wouldn't you like to see what would happen if a three-ton SUV hit one of these miniature motor vehicles?

The good news is that there is just such a video that resides on YouTube, and it pits the massive Audi Q7 against the cute and tiny Fiat 500. While we would desperately like the folks at Fiat to send the 500 State-side, watching the video doesn't exactly make us want to drive one ourselves. Hit the jump to see how the Fiat fared, but if you have a strong affinity for crash test dummies, you may want to take a pass on this one. Thanks for the tip, JC!

The fortwo racked up a rating of "good" on both the frontal and side-impact tests, while rear impacts were scored as "acceptable." IIHS President, Adrian Lund, made it clear that normally bigger and heavier vehicles are the safer choice, "but among the smallest cars, the engineers of the Smart did their homework and designed a high level of safety into a very small package."

Make the jump to read all the details of the IIHS' findings.

Gallery: smart fortwo IIHS Crash Test

[Source: IIHS]
Continue reading IIHS releases official results on the smart fortwo

IIHS releases official results on the smart fortwo originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 May 2008 09:02:00 EST. The Dodge Avenger and Chrysler Sebring, along with the Infiniti G35, Nissan Altima, Chevrolet Malibu, Saturn Aura, Mitsubishi Galant and Kia Optima all received a grade of "Good" for front and side impacts, with the exception of the Optima, which ranked "Acceptable" during the side impact evaluation. However, problems arose in the rear crash test, where the G35, Altima, Malibu, and Aura were all rated as "Marginal," while the Avenger/Sebring received an "Average" score and the Optima walked away with a gold star and a "Good" rating. The only vehicle that received a "Poor" rating on any of the tests was the Mitsubishi Galant, which didn't hold up as well during the rear-impact test.

All the details from the IIHS are available in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading IIHS midsize smack down: Side impact ratings better, rear crashes, not so much

IIHS midsize smack down: Side impact ratings better, rear crashes, not so much originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 10 Apr 2008 09:29:00 EST. While there will certainly be a number of Taurus models waxed, polished and placed just so in Ford's display at the Jacob Javits Center, one in particular will be a mess. Ford will display a crash-tested Taurus in New York to show off the big car's five-star rating for frontal and side crash tests from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Unlike the mangled Celica that used to sit outside your highschool at prom time, the crash-tested Taurus on display in New York will be interactive. Show goers will be allowed to sit in the post-crash Taurus to see what a crash test dummy sees after a 35-mph meet up with an offset concrete barrier. Looking at the pic above, it is pretty impressive that the passenger compartment remains untouched after such an event. We're looking forward to our seat time with this one, though any trip to the Autoblog Garage might necessitate a tow truck.

Gallery: Ford Taurus Crash Test Car

[Source: Ford]
Continue reading New York '08 Preview: Ford featuring crash-tested Taurus

New York '08 Preview: Ford featuring crash-tested Taurus originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 18 Mar 2008 10:35:00 EST. Shot in what looks like ABC Super Slo Mo, you get a pretty good idea of how you'll fare in a Genesis should you encounter another large object at speed. During the frontal impact test the passenger cabin remained virtually unaffected, and after seeing the side impact test all we can say is thank goodness for side airbags. Who knows, if the Genesis keeps turning in these kinds of performances, it could one day be a star. Recognizing the 9 out of 10 vehicles routinely score either four- or five-stars on the administration's tests, she's seeking to increase the standards for front- and side-impacts, along with more stringent testing of rollover protection.

The move is due to what some feel are antiquated testing measures, as well as the assertion that automakers engineer vehicles specifically to perform well on the current tests. Increased rollover protection is apparently one of the major goals of the administration, and Nason is planning on rewriting a 2005 proposal that would increase roof strength. However, she concedes that it will only save approximately 100 lives per year.

Automakers have contended for some time that the technological saturation point for crash protection is getting closer, and that driver behavior needs to be addressed. Nason maintains that vehicles should be able to overcome mistakes by the user, saying, "The future of automotive safety is crash avoidance technology." Why these two goals can't be addressed simultaneously is anyone's guess.

[Source: Automotive News - Sub. Until now. Consumer Reports has put hours of crash-test video from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety online, free for anyone to see.

We've already lost hours of productivity to CR's new Crash-In Theater and we're sure you will too. We highly recommend watching the frontal offset test of the 2000 Dodge Neon. It's just amazing how bent out of shape the door frame gets and surprising how much air the rear tires achieve. Oh, and the narrator says the steering wheel actually snapped off from the steering column. That can't be good.

While we found the videos highly entertaining, used- and new-car shoppers will surely find the videos and accompanying analysis beneficial. For those shopping for a used Pontiac Transport, you really, really should watch that video. For those squeamish about seeing a crash-test dummy pretty much destroyed, you really, really shouldn't.

[Source: Consumer Reports]
Consumer Reports debuts crash-in theater originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Aug 2007 11:35:00 EST. Nine vehicles for2006, including the Buick Lucerne (pictured), Hyundai Azera, and the Toyota RAV4, have already received good ratingsbased on submitted data from their automakers.

The IIHS instituted the new policy based on automakers'improvements in frontal crash protection. Note: only redesigned vehicles are eligible for this policy. The institutewill still test 'substantially redesigned' models, and will also perform audits on eligible vehicles to verifyautomakers' data.

The IIHS plans to use resources freed from the new policy towards side-impact crash testsand avoidance technologies.

[Source: Associated Press via Houston Chronicle]

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety alters crash test practices originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 01 Apr 2006 12:01:00 EST.
