2012 Honda CR-V - front three-quarter view in front of decaying wall

There is no denying that the European auto market is taking its lumps right now - just ask Peugeot - but Honda might be taking this downturn on the chin a little harder than some of the other Japanese automakers doing business on the continent. Automotive News Europe is reporting that things have gotten so bad for Honda that it will be cutting 800 workers from Swindon, England plant that builds the CR-V, Civic and Jazz (a.k.a. Fit). This will be the first time Honda has made such cuts in more than 20 years.

Despite an increase in output last year over 2011 (165,607 units compared to 97,459), the Swindon plant is still running well below its full capacity (250,000/year), and its 66 percent capacity is less than the expected breakeven point of industry analysts (75 to 80 percent). Unlike in the US, however, Honda's new CR-V and Civic aren't selling well, and the similarly sized Nissan Qashqai is outselling the CR-V at a rate of more than five to one. Slow CR-V sales are blamed on a relatively high price and the crossover's conservative styling. On the complete opposite side of the spectrum, the report notes that Nissan continues to experience growth at its UK operations, leading analysts to suggest that Honda can't blame the sour economy for much of its woes.

Honda S2000 Modulo Climax

Honda has pulled back the covers on what we can expect to see at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon, including what looks to be an S2000 refresh some four years after the convertible left production. The S2000 Modulo Climax is an "exhibition model" based on the old roadster, but features updated front and rear fascias as well as an interior trimmed out in black and burgundy. Beyond that, details are scarce as hen's teeth.

Honda will also show off a number of vehicles based on the N-One mini, including the N-One Modulo Style, Mugen Racing N-One Concept and an N-One worked up by the Japan Nailist Association. That last creation features plenty of rhinestone decoration. (We wish we were joking.) Mugen will also display a tarted-up CR-V Design Study as well as the CR-Z Mugen RZ: a 300-unit specialty vehicle.

Meanwhile, the manufacturer's motorcycle arm will show off the Goldwing F6B, previously seen at EICMA 2012 as well as the CB1300 Super Four Special Edition and the NC700X. The automaker will also pepper its stand with a few of its racing machines for the public to enjoy. Check out the full press release below.

The 2013 Ford Fusion is probably the latest, greatest example of a completely redesigned car that has evoked widespread calls of "Look at that!" Above its buzzworthy looks, though, Ford will be concerned about how the 2013 Fusion sells and by how much - if at all - it beats sales of the previous version. Cars.com has run the sales numbers on 61 models that have been redesigned in the past four years, ranking them as Winners, Underperformers and Losers depending on how a new-generation model is selling compared to the one it replaces.

The rankings are sorted by sales class - small, medium and large sellers - so that the success of a niche sports car is weighted differently than the success of a popular midsize car. Compared to a four-year sales average for redesigned cars in each class, Winners were those who outsold the average, Underperformers didn't make the average but did outperform the previous year's (hence, the previous car's) sales, while Losers couldn't do any better anywhere.

Among the most recently introduced winners were the Toyota Camry and the Honda CR-V. The Camry beat the Four-Year Category Average Redesign Increase for large sellers by 2.2 percent, the CR-V managed 0.2 percent. Underperformers included the Audi A6/S6 which, even though it has outsold the previous generation by 58 percent, still isn't getting near the small seller category average of 79.2 percent. The new Hyundai Accent is also considered an underperformer, the new model boosting sales by 5.5 percent - nowhere near the 61.5 percent of the medium seller category average. The only Loser listed in the chart is the Honda Civic, taking one last thrashing before the "honed" 2013 redesign gets a chance to right the ship.

As for that Fusion, the 2013 model has strong numbers to follow: the 2010 Fusion was a huge winner, putting up a 55.1-percent increase in the large seller category, beating the average by 33 percent. It only trailed the redesigned 2011 Hyundai Sonata shown above, which pasted the average by 42.5 percent. 2002 Honda CR-V

Honda has issued a recall on certain CR-V crossovers from the 2002 to 2006 model years over faulty driver-side power window switches. According to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the window switches in these affected vehicles may fail and could possibly cause a fire.

A total of 268,655 vehicles are affected by this recall, all of which were built between February 19, 2002 and July 28, 2006.

NHTSA states that if the window switch fails, it could "overheat, smoke and cause a fire," and such an instance can even occur if the vehicle is not in use. That said, NHTSA is advising owners to park outside until the recall repair has been completed.

Honda will begin notifying owners in early November, and dealerships will inspect and repair the faulty window switches free of charge. Scroll down to read the official NHTSA report.

2012 Honda CR-V - front three-quarter view

On the verge of launching an all-new 2013 Accord, Honda has significantly upped its expected sales figures for 2012. Riding on the success of both the new Honda Civic and the 2012 Honda CR-V, the automaker says its forecast of 2012 sales have increased by more than 25 percent from the original 1.2 million units projected earlier in the year up to 1.3 million units. This all despite having to recover from natural disasters in Asia that crippled its production and inventory.

This bullish estimate can directly be attributed to strong sales of the new CR-V and Civic, two models which account for almost half of all Honda's 732,165 units through July. In fact, the CR-V is on pace to "demolish" its 2007 sales record of 219,000 units. Compared to last year, CR-V sales are up 33.9 percent, and with five months left, Honda is well on its way of not only breaking this record but also beating out the CR-Vs closest rival - and last year's top-selling crossover - the Ford Escape. As for the Civic, despite its cold critical reception, it remains Honda's best-selling model as well as the best-selling car in its class. Things should get even better for Honda with the Accord coming out this year and an emergency-refresh Civic due out next year.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Honda Fit subcompact is down 26.4 percent for the year while the company's CR-Z and Insight hybrids have combined to sell just 7,194 units all year.

Overall, Honda's sales are up 18.5 through the first seven months of 2012.

2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Perhaps the most frustrating thing about being mired in the 99% is that due to the prevalence of reality-distorting TV and the booming personal security business, we really have no idea what it's like to be Mitt Romney, Donald Trump or one of the Koch brothers. At least in the olden days, we plebs could point and stare, mouths agape as the robber barons rode through city streets in their jewel-encrusted carriages. But today? Good luck catching a glimpse of Trump's platinum-dipped Maybach or the plutonium-burning hovercrafts that the Koch's use to fly to their secret Tea Party Illuminati meetings.

What's that? Rich people buy their cars at dealerships just like we do?

Yep, and according to a new study from TrueCar, Mr. and Mrs. Moneybags don't go in for luxury models nearly as completely as you'd think. TrueCar has released a list of the top 10 most popular cars in the wealthiest zip codes in the U.S. and, shockingly enough, half the vehicles on it are mainstream models from Toyota, Honda and Volkswagen.

As you would expect, a Mercedes-Benz is indeed at the top of the list, but note that it's the E-Class rather than the S-Class. Runner-up was the BMW 3 Series, just ahead of the C-Class. Fourth place went to the Lexus RX, and fifth to the Toyota Prius. Then the real commonplace models take over, with the Volkswagen Jetta in sixth, the Honda CR-V and Accord in seventh and eighth, and the Toyota Camry taking ninth. The BMW X5 wraps up the list in 10th place.

What this tells us is that the rich are clearly not stupid, choosing to buy the same sorts of vehicles that the rest of us do, models with good reputations for quality and value. Either that or they're paying their servants in cars.

2013 Honda Accord prototype - camouflaged front 3/4 view

Honda is set to unveil its new "Earth Dreams" family of engines, and while the lineup will make its debut in the all-new Accord, the more efficient powertrains are poised to spread throughout the lineup.

According to an Automotive News report, the direct-injected, dual overhead cam powerplant range is said to be good for a 10-percent increase in fuel economy over the current lineup.

Also mentioned in the story is the possibility of getting a 1.6-liter diesel with 220 pound feet of torque here in the States, and possibly a large-car hybrid setup. Will Honda renew the short-lived Accord Hybrid?

The report is not limited to engine technology, as Automotive News says Honda will move to Continuously Variable Transmissions in a much larger way. We've known for some time that the Japanese automaker is poised to go the belt and pulley route, but it hasn't been clear what vehicles will receive the transmission. Not every vehicle will get a CVT, as the report states that "performance models and off-road vehicles will retain geared transmissions."

AN also provided a breakdown of future product plans, which include a redesigned Fit in summer of 2014, with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder paired with a CVT. Europe will get a hybrid Fit, but American plans for the hybrid version have reportedly been nixed. Honda's smallest offering, may also spawn a compact crossover, slotted below the CR-V, but it's not expected until Spring, 2015.

In other portfolio news, the aging Pilot three-row crossover will receive a new 3.5-liter Earth Dreams V6 when the model is redesigned for 2014. Power is expected to be on the order of 310 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, and a CVT is also part of the program, but only on front-drive models. Also included is additional confirmation that the Civic will get an emergency refresh, a mere 18 months after its launch triggered a lackluster response from critics.

Finally, the AN report also dangles the possibility of reviving the S2000 to compete with the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ, but then dashes hopes by saying that its not a priority for the Japanese automaker.

2012 Honda CR-V - Maroon - front three-quarter view

2013 Acura ILX - front three-quarter driving viewFord isn't the only one having recall trouble with its crossovers this week. Honda has just announced a voluntary recall for its 2012 CR-V, as well as the 2013 Acura ILX, to correct an issue with their front door latches. According to Honda, operating the front driver or passenger inner door handle and the door locks simultaneously could disengage the handle's release cable, which in turn may result in the door not latching when closed or popping open when the door locks are used.

No accidents or injuries have been reported, but the recall casts a wide net over vehicles sold in North America and elsewhere around the world. Honda says 166,000 CR-V models and 6,200 ILX models are affected in the U.S., but Automotive News reports those numbers swell to 321,453 affected vehicles when the rest of Honda's markets around the world are taken into account.

To fix the problem, Honda will begin notifying customers in August by mail to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer where both front door latches, as well as the interior door handles in some CR-Vs, will be replaced.

We value their opinions, not because we necessarily agree or disagree, but because CR plays it straight. And sometimes, amidst all the folderol spewed about new models in the pages of car magazines and on the myriad websites devoted to automotive minutiae, it helps to read someone write things like this:

Overall, CR's testers found the CR-V is functional and easy to live with, if not particularly exciting to drive. The CX-5 Touring... is more athletic and engaging to drive, thanks to its agile handling, taut cornering, and responsive steering.

Now this may strike most of you as nothing more than CR displaying its usually astute command of the obvious. But it reads that way for a reason - call it art imitating life. So when the mainstreamers read that the CR-V narrowly beat out the CX-5, it will not just reflect the reality of a market in which the Mazda brand lags well behind Honda, but confirm their worldview. The Honda CR-V will continue to appear on the magazine's "Recommended" list, while the jury will await reliability reports before nominating the Mazda CX-5.

The sun will rise in the east and set in the west.

Do you spend a lot of time pinning your favorite things on Pinterest? Honda may be looking to hand you $500 as part of the company's first campaign on the social outlet. Honda is singling out active Pinterest users and handing some of them $500 to indulge in a "Pintermission" to make a visit to the places they've been pinning or pick up some of the retail items they've highlighted.

Honda is making its CR-V the focus of its first foray into Pinterest because it's a vehicle with a lot of appeal to women, much like Pinterest itself. So far, two of the women that have been handed a big, shiny check by Honda are putting the funds toward travel. One's going to London, the other is headed to Hawaii, according to Lauren Ebner, American Honda Motor Company's assistant manager of social media. We're watching Honda's board waiting to see what kind of artisanal luxury goods the CR-V inspires.

2002 Honda CR-V

Honda is recalling 554,000 crossovers to repair the low-beam headlights. The models affected are the 2002-2004 Honda CR-V (pictured above) and 2003 Pilot. A possible fault with in the headlight switch wiring could cause the low beams not to work.

We don't need to tell you why that's hazardous.

Honda will notify owners beginning in late April, at which time they can take their vehicles to dealers for repairs free of charge. The company has set up a website where owners can check if their vehicle is part of the recall, and customers can reach out to Honda directly by calling 1-800-999-1009 (select option 4), as well. European 2012 Honda CR-V

Honda has unveiled a prototype version of the upcoming European CR-V ahead of the model's debut at this year's Geneva Motor Show. As with most prototypes from Honda, the vehicle is a thinly veiled version of the production CUV set to hit dealerships later this year. If the 2012 CR-V looks familiar, it certainly should. At first glance, the tall-riding five door looks to be a carbon-copy of the U.S. market vehicle. Peer a bit closer, however, and you're likely to notice the Euro prototype wears a grille with a slightly different finish compared to its American cousin.

Our eyes also spot a mildly tweaked lower front fascia with different fog lamp openings and different - dare we say more attractive - headlights to match. Honda isn't saying much about what sort of drivetrain options European buyers will be able to enjoy once the 2012 CR-V lands. Odds are we'll have to wait until the official debut next month. Matthew Broderick Super Bowl Ad

Honda isn't typically one to dive into the Super Bowl advertising fracus with splashy spots, so when the company anonymously teased us with a quick clip of Matthew Broderick reprising his role from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, our eyebrows did a little dance. Now the company has dropped a full-length ad on the web, and it features Broderick skipping his acting duties for a little frolicking about in the city. The spot features more than a few classic Ferris Bueller lines (though nitpickers will note that some of them are a little off), and while it's well put-together, seeing the star take to the wheel of a 2012 CR-V instead of a 1961 Ferrari 250GT California Spyder is a crushing reminder of our own mortality.

Still, we like Honda's crack at half-time advertising a good bit more than the previously released Audi vampire-fest (though not more than the clever Ahab spot that's presently circulating televisions nationwide). 2012 Honda CR-V ad

The 2012 Honda CR-V went on sale last month, and in case you weren't sure what to do with yours, two new ads want you to know that the $22,295 crossover is for getting your overdue dreams accomplished before 'settling down.' And that's not just some dreams, that's all of them, from seeing the Northern Lights to making a movie to lugging around a homemade, fighting robot. Presumably you can then put the same, robot-scarred vehicle into service for bride and baby.

When you get more, you usually expect to pay more. But that's hardly the case with the latest Honda CR-V. Despite representing a comprehensive revision of the previous model and packing more features, American Honda has only increased the popular CUV's base price by an average of $181. Models equipped with the navigation system have actually dropped by $300, on average.

In the grander scheme of things, the base CR-V LX 2WD starts at $22,295 (*not including $810 for destination), while the top-of-the-line EX-L AWD model with navigation comes within spitting distance of the $30k mark. The finalists for the 2012 North American Car and Truck of the Year have just been announced, and this year, the three candidates in each category are as follows:

Car: Truck: The above finalists are the result of voting by a 50-member jury of full-time automotive journalists and broadcasters from a longer "short list" composed of 30 cars and seven trucks (an award category that also includes sport utility and crossover utility vehicles). Eligibility requirements dictate that the vehicles up for consideration must be new or substantially revised for the model year.

The jury will now vote again on these shorter lists, and the winners will be named on the opening morning of the Detroit Auto Show, with this year's press conference falling on January 9.

Last year's hardware was awarded to the 2011 Chevrolet Volt and the 2011 Ford Explorer.

Honda is still looking for a few needles in its haystack of 2001-2003 models, as it expands a recall that dates back to 2008. The recall concerns defective driver's airbag inflators, and it's a serious issue, one that has already resulted in a dozen injuries and at least one death.

The recall covers the 2001 and 2002 Accord, 2001 to 2003 Civic, 2001 to 2003 Odyssey, 2002 and 2003 CR-V, 2003 Pilot, 2002 and 2003 Acura 3.2 TL and 2003 Acura 3.2 CL. This latest expansion of the recall is necessary because Honda still hasn't found all the defective parts, with 640 of the inflators still unaccounted for. Some were sold as service parts, meaning that their whereabouts cannot be easily traced.

"Because Honda is unable to determine the specific vehicles that may have received the affected service parts through existing information," said Honda's statement, "Honda will inspect an additional approximately 603,000 vehicles and replace those parts as necessary."

Honda will be contacting affected owners by mail later in the month, and the information will also be available on the Honda and Acura websites at www.recalls.honda.com and www.recalls.acura.com. The automaker's official press release is available after the jump.

Honda U.S. plant

Honda has experienced a very challenging 2011. The devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan and the flooding in Thailand have conspired to badly damage Honda's ability to build vehicles here in North America. That should change soon, though, as Automotive News reports that North American Honda plants will be running at full steam by the beginning of December.

Honda's challenges during the Japan earthquake included a badly damaged development center and several plants that were unable to produce the parts needed to build vehicles here in the States. Just as production began to normalize, the Thailand floods caused a shutdown of the automaker's Ayutthaya plant, which reportedly led to a 4.7-percent reduction in output.

With Honda's plants running at full steam, the automaker should be able to satiate demand for new models like the Civic and the 2012 CR-V.

How To Not Screw Up A Good Thing



We Lavrincs are unabashed Honda CR-V fans. So much so that both my wife and father have one parked in their respective garages. When it comes to practicality, ideal ride height, fuel economy and ingress and egress, the CR-V is hard to beat. All of which helps to explain why it's placed either first or second in the compact CUV sales race since it was first introduced to the U.S. back in 1996.

The CR-V allows my wife to shlep a dog, a few cases of wine and untold amounts of catering supplies with room to spare. For my dad, the CR-V means that he can get in and out with ease and drive with the "command view" seating that Boomers are always after. And when asked what they'd like to see changed or improved, their list was remarkably small. Dad wanted softer seats and less road noise, while the wife wanted more cubbies and a bit more connectivity. Without directly conferring with my immediate family, Honda has managed to addressed all of these issues and more with the 2012 model, and it's thrown in better fuel economy and a host of new features to boot.

Despite all of these improvements, with every automaker pouring hundreds of millions into crossover development and scads of new entrants appearing each year, Honda simply couldn't afford to take it easy on this model - especially in light of its recent struggles. So with some trepidation, I flew to San Diego, California recently to see if the 2012 Honda CR-V is still good enough to retain its status as my go-to recommendation for the anti-wagon crowd.
