Despite filming at 2:00 AM and at an undisclosed location, BMW minders filming a commercial for the fast-approaching 4 Series coupe were unable to ward off the long lenses of spy photographers. The result, as you can see here, is our first-ever look at the production version of BMW's new coupe, completely uncovered.

The night shots may be a little bit grainy, but the fast-moving 4 Series still looks pretty good with its camo closeted, matching the svelte lines of the concept car we saw in Detroit this winter. Expect that the 4 coupe will come to market with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in 428i trim, and a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder in 435i spec.

Take your time looking through our gallery of movie-star 4 Series photographs, and tell us what you think about the uncovered Bimmer, in comments.
BMW 4 Series production coupe caught on commercial shoot originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 22 Mar 2013 18:58:00 EST.
Lincoln has released a new video teasing... something. In what looks to be an advertisement for more advertising, the company has worked up a clip featuring everything from a drum solo and a flying hawk to Abraham Lincoln himself. The video shows a few shots of what looks to be an MKZ and promises more news is coming on Monday.

What does the company have up its sleeves? Rumors are bouncing around the web like so many ill-informed ping-pong balls, and cover everything from an alternative powertrain for the MKZ to a new two-door model - noise that is underscored by the presence of a Ford Mustang chassis lurking in the background of the video around the 27-second mark (see screen capture above).

Could Lincoln be considering a rear-wheel drive luxury coupe built on the pony's bones? A move like that seems awfully unlikely, but it certainly wouldn't hurt our feelings. Either way, we'll find out more tomorrow. In the interim, check out the teaser video below for yourself.
Continue reading Lincoln video teases new things to come... but what?

Lincoln video teases new things to come... but what? originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 02 Dec 2012 19:02:00 EST.
Red Bull is one of those companies with its fingers in every corner of the sports world. It's easy to forget just how far those sponsorship dollars have spread since the brand's early days, but a clever new video showcasing some of the brightest stars of the Red Bull family is out to remind us there's nowhere the energy drink manufacturer won't advertise.

In what could very well be the world's oddest Rube Goldberg machine - Red Bull calls it a Kluge, which means a jury-rigged device or offbeat workaround - pro skaters Joey Brezinski and Ryan Sheckler, hurdler Lolo Jones, sky diver Sean MacCormac and motocross rider Robbie Maddison team up with one truck racer Bryce Menzies and Rhys Millen in his Hyundai Genesis Coupe drift car to free a can of Red Bull from a block of ice.

Excessive? Sure, but remember, this is the same company that put a man at the edge of space just so he could jump back down again. Other Red Bull-branded athletes make an appearance as well, including pro golfer Rickie Fowler and snowboarder Pat Moore. Check out the whole cast in the clip below.
Continue reading Red Bull Rube Goldberg machine uses Ram trophy truck, Hyundai Genesis

Red Bull Rube Goldberg machine uses Ram trophy truck, Hyundai Genesis originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Nov 2012 19:58:00 EST.
As had been speculated, the brief run of the Aston Martin Virage is over with the arrival of the 2013 Aston Martin DB9, shown above. You'll recall that the Virage was introduced as a bridge between the previous DB9 and the now-defunct DBS.

Coupled with the arrival of the new range-topping Vanquish, the '13 DB9 eliminates the middle man, so to speak, merging the Virage's styling elements (as evidenced by the DB9's front fascia) with powertrain and chassis tweaks developed for the Vanquish. You will doubtless note that the DB9 looks like nearly every recent Aston Martin preceding it. We'd agree, while allowing that the familial look is a feature, not a bug. As before, it's offered as a coupe or convertible (Volante).

Power in the new DB9 comes from the latest version of Aston Martin's 6.0-liter V12, making 510 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque in this application. Those are increases of 40 hp and 14 lb-ft over the old DB9, as well as 20 hp and 37 lb-ft over the Virage. Carbon-ceramic brakes are standard, and the car boasts 50/50 distribution of its 3,935-pound curb weight. If you want to shift for yourself, you'll have to make do with the Touchtronic 2's paddles, as there's no traditional manual gearbox offered.

Inside, you'll find the same familiar instrument and control layout featured in the current Vantage and the outgoing DB9 and Virage models. A backup camera is now standard. The new DB9 does not receive the updated interior design that premiered in the 2013 Vanquish, so there's now a clear differentiation between the flagship and the "mainstream" V12 car in that respect.

If you want to order a new DB9, you may do so immediately. Pricing starts at $185,400 and it hits showrooms in November. For the full rundown, you can view the entire PR blast from Aston Martin below.
Continue reading Aston Martin vanquishes Virage, unveils 2013 DB9

Aston Martin vanquishes Virage, unveils 2013 DB9 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 18 Sep 2012 19:00:00 EST.
In most cases, when a car is leaked by a manufacturer, it is done by accident. Say, a toy manufacturer gets ahold of schematics to make a replica, or perhaps it is inadvertently placed in the background of a promotional video. Either way, seldom does an automaker intentionally leak photos of an upcoming product on its own. But when it comes to the Paceman, it looks like Mini has been going in the other direction.

According to a MotoringFile.com report, Mini's own fan magazine, cleverly-named Mini Space, was responsible for leaking fully uncloaked images of the new crossover-coupe in a story about a pair of foodies eating their way through London's gastro scene. Not your typical product release to say the least.

From what we can see, the Paceman has elements of the Countryman crossover, including the tall front end, higher ground clearance and chrome signal accent at the base of the A-pillar. There are also visual cues that point to the all-new Mini Cooper Coupe, in the form of the raked rear window and elongated roof spoiler- though thankfully not as large as that of the Coupe.

Be sure to sift through our gallery of images, which appear to be scanned from the print version of the magazine. The online post which contained these images appears to have since been taken down. We will have more on the Mini Paceman when it officially bows in Paris later this month.
Mini Paceman photos leaked ahead of debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 10:57:00 EST.
In 1939, Jean Bugatti was hard at work on the Type 64 Coupe. A total of three examples were started, but only one received completed bodywork before the designer's death during a Type 57 road test. Now the Mullin Automotive Museum is out to finish what Bugatti started all those years ago. Using many of the same coachbuilding techniques employed by the French automaker in the late '30s, the museum has all but finished constructing the body.

Naked of paint and lounging under the California sun, the Type 64 looks as if it has just rolled out of our ancestors' vision for the future. Its papillion doors and dramatic, reaching front fenders are as elegant now as they were when Bugatti first sketched them 73 years ago. Take a closer look for yourself by clicking through the photo gallery.

And if you missed the Quail Motorsports Gathering, don't sweat it. The Mullin Automotive Museum plans to display the car at its Oxnard, California facility starting this fall.
1939 Bugatti Type 64 Coupe is incomplete perfection originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 18 Aug 2012 19:24:00 EST.
Audi has introduced an S Line Competition version of the TT that dresses things up with the S Line sport and exterior packages, plus a few extra features at reduced cost. Globally, it can be fitted to any TT with up to 211 horsepower, which for us means the standard 2.0 TFSI coupe since we don't get the diesel or smaller gas engines.

New bumpers, sills, badging, Xenon headlights, rear diffuser, matte black trim and exhaust finishers are among the kit, capped at the back by a spoiler that calls to mind the TT RS. The package sits 10 millimeters lower on the S Line suspension on black, 19-inch Rotor wheels. Inside, the S Line shout-out continues with the logoed sills, aluminum-look bits, leather and Alcantara with contrasting stitching, a reshaped steering wheel and a short shifter on models equipped with manual transmissions.

It's available now in four colors, Samoa Orange metallic, Glacier White metallic, Daytona Gray pearl effect and Misano Red pearl effect, and adds €4,300 ($5,410 U.S.) to the price in Europe. We're still awaiting U.S. pricing, but it probably won't be far off $4,300 in dollars since package prices are numerically close here and in Europe; the S Line pack is €1,400 in Germany and $1,200 here.

It's an interesting time for the compact car class. On one hand, we're seeing the rise of the hatchback. On the other, we're seeing the compact coupe market dwindle. Think about it: When the Chevrolet Cobalt became the Cruze, the coupe bodystyle went away. And when the Ford Focus was redesigned for 2012, the two-door died, but the five-door returned.

That said, it came as no surprise that when Hyundai replaced its Elantra Touring with the stylish new GT, it took on a more traditional five-door shape. But that isn't the only new addition to the model range for 2013. We now have this, the Elantra Coupe, which the Korean automaker hopes will appeal to a younger set of buyers desiring something that's more fashionable than all-around useful. Call it, "cheerleader chic."

With its attractive design and affordable price point, the Elantra Coupe certainly appears to be a hit with that younger, more style-conscious demographic. We donned our best sunglasses and hit the coast of California to see what's what.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Elantra Coupe

2013 Hyundai Elantra Coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 Jul 2012 11:57:00 EST.
Don't be surprised. This isn't the first time we've heard talk of Cadillac looking to expand its ATS lineup beyond the new-for-2013 sedan. Earlier this year, we reported that the automaker may be looking to move its CTS Coupe and Sport Wagon models down to the ATS line, and before that, our intrepid spy photographers had caught what appears to be a high-power ATS-V out testing.

TheDetroitBureau.com points out that the biggest challenge Cadillac faces in coming up with an ATS coupe is how to create something that doesn't just resemble a smaller version of the larger CTS two-door. Of course, the larger model could just be ditched altogether in favor of a rakish new ATS variant, and while Cadillac (as usual) cannot confirm future product plans, spokespeople within the automaker were a bit ruffled when rumors of the ATS coupe's demise were greatly exaggerated.

An ATS-V is indeed more likely to show up first, though at this point, there's still apparently some back-and-forth about whether or not to throw a big V8 or turbocharged V6 under the hood. We've heard rumors of everything from a 380-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 to a 470-horsepower 6.2-liter V8, so at this point, your guess is as good as ours.

Finally, TheDetroitBureau.com reports that future ATS models aren't the only thing spinning through the Cadillac rumormill right now. Apparently, several sources within the automaker have discussed the possibility of adding a convertible to the lineup - something that has been absent since the XLR was killed off a few years ago. Something giant and grandiose like the Ciel concept is certainly an option, but who knows, maybe there's a droptop ATS variant in the works, too.
Cadillac ATS-V, Coupe talks resurface, new convertible model in the works? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 13:28:00 EST.
A week ago, Aston Martin showed off the new AM310 concept at Villa d'Este. Now we know what the DBS replacement will be called when the production version arrives, thanks to the snoops at CAR magazine: Vanquish.

The resurrected moniker, last used on the V12 GT flagship that Aston retired in 2007, is plainly visible on the decklid of the car shown above, whose rear-end styling exactly matches that of the AM310 Concept.

Whether the transporter carrying the new Vanquish was left open by genuine mistake or "accidentally" by design, CAR's video of the discovery, posted below, leaves no doubt as to the next Aston Martin's identity. And we have some tidbits of our own to add to the developing story.

We've heard some rumblings that more concrete information will become available later this month, and that if you want to see the Vanquish in person, you should keep Pebble Beach weekend open. As indicated by the AM310, the Vanquish looks to the ultra-exotic One-77 for some styling cues, but that's not all. Expect the Vanquish to outperform the DBS, with more power from the latest version of Aston's familiar 6.0-liter V12 and less weight thanks to carbon fiber bodywork. Lighter, quicker and faster? Our attention is piqued. U.S. buyers should be able to get their hands on the Vanquish sometime in early 2013.

Volvo has its heart set on a new, larger luxury coupe, according to Inside Line. The Swedish automaker aims to build a model slotted above the current C70. Dubbed the C90, the model will compete directly against hardware like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, which means a convertible version will likely follow as well. The news comes via unnamed insiders.

The C90 will be built on the same Scalable Platform Architecture as the upcoming C80. As such, we can probably expect the new two-door to share the C80's gasoline and diesel drivetrain options. Given Volvo's affinity for plug-in hybrids, we wouldn't be surprised to see a battery pack show up eventually as well.

Unfortunately, none of this is written in stone. The C90 still hasn't made it into the Volvo model cycle plan, meaning the luxe two-door won't see the light of day until 2015 at the earliest. Still, the news underscores Volvo's intention to move upmarket and fight head to head with entrenched European luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW.
Volvo contemplating C90 luxury coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 03 Jun 2012 16:04:00 EST.
The SC 430 wasn't exactly a hot ticket item, but it was the only Lexus model available with two doors until the model was discontinued in 2010. That could change for the 2014 model year, as Inside Line reports that Lexus is primed to unleash a coupe version of the all-new GS.

While Lexus hasn't officially announced that a two-door GS is forthcoming, IL points out that there are plenty of signs that point towards a performance coupe. For instance, Lexus Boss Mark Templin reportedly stated that he was interested in a sport coupe in the $60,000 to $70,000 range. Further, Lexus planning chief Karl Schlicht reportedly told Automotive News earlier in the year that the brand needed a coupe to round out its lineup of sedans and utility vehicles. Certainly not a confirmation of a sleek new coupe, but the puzzle pieces appear to be coming together.

One small glitch is that the GS sedan starts out at $46,900, which is a far cry from $60,000. The pricing difference could come in the form of a high-performance F-Sport engine or perhaps a more performance-oriented hybrid.

Chances are if Lexus does add a sporty coupe to its lineup, we're going to hear about it by the time the Los Angeles Auto Show rolls around this fall. We're more than okay with more GS variants, and a performance coupe always sounds like a good idea to us.
Lexus GS coupe slated to arrive in 2013 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 30 May 2012 09:58:00 EST.
Hyundai has once again partnered up with Rhys Millen, this time to create a new 2013 Genesis Coupe fit to take on Formula Drift. The specially prepared two-door boasts more then 600 horsepower thanks to careful tweaking by the minds at RMR. That's a far cry from the 274 hp served up by the stock 2.0-liter turbo four, and so far, Millen is keeping the secret of how he pulled that much grunt from the four-pot to himself. We're guessing this machine has been touched by the gods of forced-induction in all the right ways.

While Millen and his track-bred heathen are out vaporizing tires, Hyundai fans will have a chance to pour over the company's other wares and compete for race gifts while at the track. This marks the fourth consecutive year Hyundai and Millen have partnered up, and this year, he'll be the exclusive driver for the company at all Formula Drift events. Last year, the RMR team took first place in Las Vegas and runner up at Irwindale. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Hyundai shows Millen's updated-for-2013 Genesis Coupe drift car

Hyundai shows Millen's updated-for-2013 Genesis Coupe drift car originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 09 Apr 2012 13:01:00 EST.
It's pretty obvious that automakers' definition of the word 'coupe' these days is a far cry from the traditional meaning. (We do live in the world of the "four-door coupe," after all.) That said, Car and Driver reports that Mini will call the company's two-door Paceman Concept the Countryman Coupe once it hits production.

While it's true that both the Paceman Concept and most coupes have two doors, the vehicle is more of a CUV/hatchback/crossover, at least to our eyes. Even so, the fact that the vehicle will reportedly share the Countryman moniker is no shock. Both vehicles wear the same nose front fascia, grille, headlights, fenders and hood. Even so, based on the automaker's current naming convention, that means we'll have to get used to saying something like "Mini Cooper S Countryman Coupe." Because that won't get confusing or anything.

Last we heard, the three-door Countryman will go on sale in 2013 as a 2014 model, and rumor has it that the production model will debut at the Paris Motor Show later this year. A few patent drawings have already made their way to the web, indicating the final version will be remarkably similar to the concept we've already seen.
Mini changing Paceman name to Countryman Coupe for production originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Mar 2012 18:30:00 EST.
You've soaked in the details. You've seen the pictures. You may even have set one as the wallpaper on your desktop or smartphone. But the new BMW M6 isn't the ultimate ogling machine. It's the ultimate driving machine. So the best we can advise is that you go out and drive one. But short of that, you'll want at least to see it in motion.

Fortunately, BMW has released a pair of clips showing the new coupe and cabrio doing what they do best in a setting that, to our eyes, looks like it must be in the Persian Gulf. Follow the jump to check them out, and try not to mind the soundtrack that's dubbed dramatic music over what we all really want to hear: the engine note.
Continue reading Check out the new BMW M6 duo in action

Check out the new BMW M6 duo in action originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Feb 2012 19:59:00 EST.
With 2012 now upon us, BMW has released a series of updates across its ever-expanding range, but the most noteworthy among them are a pair of special editions in the 1 Series.

First up is the Edition Exclusive, which packages a chrome grille, exhaust tips and window frames to contrast with the special grey metallic paint (or one of five standard colors), along with unique wheels and an interior decked out in special black or grey top-stitched leather with aluminum trim, anthracite headliner, chrome-trimmed steering wheel and handbrake and special sill plates and floor mats.

The Edition Sport, meanwhile, includes the M Sports suspension, wheels and aero kit, offset by high-gloss black exterior trim. The interior likewise benefits from some M touches, and grippy textile upholstery with contrasting blue stitching and aluminum trim.

Both packages are available on either the 1 Series Coupe or Convertible, and with a broad range of engines, with deliveries beginning in March. Follow the jump for the full press release and check out the high-res images in the gallery for a closer look.
Continue reading BMW adds Exclusive and Sport editions to 1 Series coupe/convertible range

BMW adds Exclusive and Sport editions to 1 Series coupe/convertible range originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 16:29:00 EST.
In true Honda fashion, we're once again presented with a "concept" car that's only a set of wheels and a de-Bedazzling away from being production-ready. What you're looking at here is the concept that previews the next-generation Accord that will be dropping later this year, ready to compete with a full slate of redesigned mid-size sedans.

Honda has once again taken a conservative approach to design, and while it's certainly handsome (except for those gaudy air intakes that flank both sides of the front fascia), we can't help but think that it already looks one or two generations old. (2009 Kia Optima, anyone?) We'll have to wait until we see the car in its production spec before making final judgments, but with sexy new mid-size offerings like the 2013 Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima, the Accord doesn't look to be gunning for shoppers who want a whole lot of style with their substance.

Substance, though, it definitely has. The base engine is a new Earth Dreams 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder with direct injection, putting 181 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque to the ground via a continuously variable transmission. Honda will continue to offer a V6 in the Accord - a dying trend in this segment - measuring 3.5 liters, mated to either a manual or automatic transmission, both with six gears.

The Accord Hybrid will use an all-new two-motor plug-in hybrid system with three drive modes - all-electric, gasoline-electric and "direct-drive."

What's really interesting, though, is that the 2013 model marks the return of the Accord Hybrid - a vehicle that died after the 2007 model year. This time, however, the Accord will use an all-new two-motor plug-in hybrid system with three drive modes - all-electric, gasoline-electric and "direct-drive" - with a 6-kWh lithium-ion battery and a 120-kilowatt electric motor mated to a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle inline four-cylinder engine. Honda says that the Accord Plug-In will have a pure electric range of 10-15 miles with a top speed of 62 miles per hour, and that recharging the battery will take less than four hours with a 120-volt charger, or less than 1.5 hours with a 240-volt setup. Not bad, Honda.

Naturally, Honda will pack the 2013 Accord with all of its latest safety technologies, including lane departure warning, forward collision warning, blind-spot detection and a multi-angle rear-view camera. We expect to see the production car debut in the not-too-distant future (New York Auto Show, perhaps?) with the 2013 model officially hitting dealerships this fall. The Accord Plug-In will arrive a little later, in winter.

We see the form versus function fight played out on a daily basis in the automotive realm. Designers, engineers and accountants lock horns on every model that ever makes its way to the street in order to come up with a suitable compromise that will successfully appease their respective masters. More often than not, a vehicle's more stylish aspects are left by the wayside as aerodynamics, packaging and economics hammer automotive forms into the same uninspired mold. Anyone who remembers the muscular form of the Chevrolet Volt concept need only look to the limp lines of the production model to see the process in action.

It's something special when an automaker cries "Damn the torpedoes!" and drives an undiluted concept design off of the auto show stage and straight into production. Pupils dilate, cheeks flush and hearts flutter with primordial do-want. Such is the case with the 2012 Range Rover Evoque Coupe. In an era when most automakers wouldn't waste firing a single synapse on the personal utility segment, Land Rover has kicked open the doors on an arena long thought forgotten. With its heart-stopping styling, powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine and surprising off-road chops, the Evoque is exactly what we've been missing from this segment. But who's going to buy it?
Continue reading 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Coupe

2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Dec 2011 11:57:00 EST.
In just a few weeks, we'll be feasting our eyes on the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe under the bright lights of the Detroit Auto Show. And while the endless spy shots and leaked images have done a good job of showing us exactly what the new coupe looks like, this in-person video gives us a glimpse of what the new Hyundai sports cars looks like in the wild - inside and out.

We're slowly warming to the new Veloster-inspired front fascia, and the other visual changes for 2013 have been easier to appreciate. The revised taillamps look nice, and we dig the wheel design of the 3.8 R-Spec model shown in this video. V6-equipped Genesis Coupes will now be good for 345 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, routed to the ground via a six-speed manual or optional eight-speed automatic. Turbocharged four-cylinder models will still produce a more than respectable 271 hp and 275 lb-ft with the same transmission choices.

The videos, available after the jump, give us a glimpse inside the new Genesis Coupe, and though we can't see much more than the gauge cluster and steering wheel, it doesn't appear that too much has changed inside. More interesting is a brief second video clip with a first-person acceleration run, though in truth, it doesn't reveal much more than the engine sound because of the way it's shot.

We'll be sure to give you a closer look when the Hyundai makes its debut in Detroit next month, so stay tuned.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe gets the real-life walkaround treatment

2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe gets the real-life walkaround treatment originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Dec 2011 13:59:00 EST.
The web has fired up an interesting bit of rumor concerning the next-generation Mazda6. British auto magazine WhatCar? reports that a shadowy senior official within the Japanese automaker has confirmed that a coupe version will bow after the current sedan's successor debuts in a little over a year.

The 2013 Mazda6 is set to hit the market in January 2013, and WhatCar? reports that the coupe version may not touch down until 2014 or later. That's a long, long way off, and there's no guarantee that, even if the model becomes a reality, it will be sold in the States. All of which means we're taking this one with a Mazda6-sized grain of salt.

Still, WhatCar? reports the coupe version of the Mazda6 will make use of the same SkyActiv tech found in the four-door, including a weight-saving design, small displacement engines with forced-induction and new transmissions. Still, we like the sound of an attractive two-door designed to give the Honda Accord Coupe and Nissan Altima two-door some competition, especially if it comes packing excellent fuel economy.
Mazda6 coupe coming? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Dec 2011 09:57:00 EST.
