After more than two years of design and development work, the new GT2 class Corvette C6.R made its racing debut on Saturday at Mid-Ohio. For an all-new race ca,r it proved remarkably free of teething pains. In fact, it seems the biggest hurdle was for the drivers, Johnny O'Connell, Jan Magnussen, Olivier Berretta and Oliver Gavin, who had to deal with running in the GT pack rather than racing in the top of the pack amongst themselves.

After two hours and 45 minutes of action, O'Connell and Magnussen ended up finishing second in the GT1 class to Patrick Long and Joerg Bergmeister in one of the Flying Lizard Porsches. Their teammates suffered a bout of bad timing when the safety car was out during a full course yellow and causing the duo to lose a lap. Nonetheless, they still finished fourth behind the BMW M3 of Tom Milner and Dirk Mueller. Next weekend it's off to Road America in Elkhart Lake WI.

While the 24 Hours of Le Mans was the swan song for the GT1-class Corvette C6.R, the fellas at Corvette Racing will unveil the next chapter of the story this coming Tuesday, August 4th. According to the crew at BadBoyVettes.com, that's the day we'll see the new GT2-class Chevy Corvette racer, which will allegedly wear "ZR1-influenced" styling. Beyond that, well, we're waiting along with the rest of you. We can't imagine Corvette Racing would abandon the Jake-emblazoned Velocity Yellow-and-Black livery that has become synonymous with success over the years. They'll need all that mojo and then some in GT2, where the competition is fierce and Porsche and Ferrari rule. And that's fine. Consistent, healthy competition has been sorely lacking for the Vettes, which have essentially just raced each other recent years, so this ought to be fun. The GT2 Vettes spring into real action on August 8, when ALMS visits Mid-Ohio. To the GT2 field: Check your mirrors. They're coming. To the rest of you in readerland: Check your local listings and set those DVRs.

Gallery: Corvette Racing GT1 Mega Gallery

[Source: BadBoyVettes.com]
Corvette Racing GT2 car to be unveiled on Tuesday originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 01 Aug 2009 18:06:00 EST.
Following the 2008 American Le Mans Series, Chevrolet announced that its Corvette Racing team would abandon the largely uncontested ranks of GT1 and take on the challenge of GT2. As General Motors careened toward bankruptcy court this spring, the team competed in its final GT1 races at Sebring, Long Beach and Le Mans - but the big question was whether the GT2 program would be still-born.

Well, Corvette fans can now breath a sigh of relief - the news has just come from the American Le Mans Series that GM has filed official entry forms to compete in the GT2 class at Mid-Ohio in August. The existing driver pairings of Johnny O'Connell/Jan Magnussen and Olivier Beretta/Oliver Gavin will pilot the new Vettes, which will feature bodywork inspired by the ZR1 - including double side vents. We're certainly looking forward to seeing Chevrolets take on Ferrari, Porsche and Aston next month as they take to the roadcourse the weekend of Aug. 6-8.

Gallery: Corvette Racing GT1 Mega Gallery

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Drew Phillips / Weblogs, Inc.
[Source: American Le Mans Series]
Corvette C6R GT2 cars officially entered for Mid-Ohio ALMS race originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 14 Jul 2009 08:29:00 EST.
Here's to you, Corvette Racing. The car has evolved, the livery has changed, drivers have come and gone, competitors have challenged and fallen away, and even the type of fuel is new, but one thing remains the same -- a winning formula. Starting with a second-place finish at its inaugural race at the 1999 24 Hours of Daytona, Corvette Racing went on to become one of the most dominant teams in motorsports history. The easily recognizable yellow paint scheme and the deep sound of the V8 have made the Corvettes a fan favorite, as have drivers like Ron Fellows, Johnny O'Connell, Oliver Gavin, and Olivier Beretta. The first couple of times Corvette Racing took the GT1 title in the American Le Mans Series, it must have been exciting. But after dominating the class every year since 2001, they're starting to look for a new fight, and the Porsches and Ferraris duking it out in GT2 must have started to look mighty tasty. Aching for a fight, Chevrolet's racing partner Pratt & Miller have started teasing what their latest challenger will look like, and it's pretty badass.

For 2009, the Corvette C6.R GT2 will take its cues from the new king of the roadgoing Corvette castle, the all-conquering ZR1. Don't expect a window into the race-engine compartment, but the design promises to look unmistakably like a track-bound version of the supercharged 'Vette flagship. Under the hood in 2009 will be a downsized 6.0-liter LS7 to meet the new ALMS regulations, to be replaced by a 5.5-liter race-tuned LS3 with 500 horsepower for 2010. The rendering above gives us a good idea of what the C6.R GT2 will look like, so F430 and 911 pilots had better get used to it.

[Source: BadBoyVettes via Jalopnik]
A Wolf in Wolf's Clothing: New Corvette GT2 racer takes cues from ZR1 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 01 Apr 2009 18:30:00 EST.
While the Corvette Stingray Concept (a.k.a. Autobot Sideswipe) introduced at the Chicago Auto Show earlier this month sports heritage-inspired cues, its futuristic styling could also hint at the design of the next-generation model. GM made no comment on whether any of the concept would find make its way into the C7 Corvette, but there will doubtless be plenty of people willing to speculate. The gang at BadBoyVettes.com have taken it one step further and have come up with what the C7.R would look like if the Stingray went to production as-is. Using one of our live shots from the show, they've added the Corvette Racing livery, complete with the "Jake" skull mascot featured prominently on the hood. We think they did a good job, which is to be expected, since BBV helped put together the design schemes for the actual C6.R racers. In full race livery, the Stingray looks like it'd be equally adept at chasing down Gulf-liveried Aston Martins or battling giant evil robots. After all, Jake plays no favorites; he's an equal-opportunity intimidator.

[Source: BadBoyVettes.com]
Rendered Speculation: Corvette Stingray C7.R originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 21 Feb 2009 09:02:00 EST.
Back at the Nürburgring, the hot Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 has just ripped four seconds off its claimed 7:26 lap. The new time, with Jan Magnussen at the wheel, is a claimed 7:22.4 for the full 12.93-mile loop. While the number is pretty bloody fast, it is still .3 seconds off the time earned by the Dodge Viper ACR (ouch, those three tenths really have to hurt!). We take these lap times with a grain of salt, as we've yet to see everyone on the 73-turn course under the same conditions, and with officially certified timing equipment. Again, so you don't have to Google the competition's best-claimed Ring times yourself, here they are: Porsche GT2 - 7:32, Nissan GT-R - 7:29, Corvette ZR1 - 7:22.4 and the Dodge Viper ACR - 7:22.1. Thanks for the tip, Xeyad!

The Corvette Racing team announced a few weeks ago that it will switch from GT1 to the GT2 class. In an ALMS conference call, program manager Dough Fehan revealed that the engineering work on the new car is done and assembly of the first car will start in the next 7-10 days. Visually, the new car will be almost indistinguishable from the GT1 racer, with the biggest difference being a smaller rear wing. Underneath the skin, the carbon brakes will have to go as they aren't allowed in GT2 so steel rotors will have to dissipate the kinetic energy. Creating kinetic energy will be a new, smaller, 6.0L version of the engine currently used. The GT2 engine will continue to run on cellulosic E85.

The GT2 cars will likely make their competition debut at the Mid-Ohio ALMS race in early August. Before that happens, the GT1 cars will make three final runs at Sebring, Long Beach and of course Le Mans to try and win one more time.

Gallery: Detroit Sports Car Challenge 08

[Source: American Le Mans Series]
Corvette Racing just about ready to start building GT2 C6.R originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 26 Oct 2008 17:32:00 EST.
This streetable Corvette parked outside of the convention center at SEMA had us doing a double take. It looks so much like the real thing that we half expected to see Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta signing autographs next to the car. The Corvette C6R replica is spot on with a carbon fiber front spoiler, rear wing, all the right stickers and even the factory drivers' names of the #4 car above the door. It's probably one of the biggest cop magnets ever, but driving this thing around on the street would be worth a ticket or two.

We have been tracking the progress of Bad Boy Vette's new livery for the C6R in its final race of the ALMS season with great anticipation. The finished product was finally revealed last night at a pre-race party in Monterey hosted by BBV. The new graphics look downright menacing, with the "Take No Prisoners" skull featured prominently on the hood and sides. A handful of photos have been posted on the web site, and hopefully more are to come. Both C6Rs will hit the track at Laguna Seca today for practice sessions, and they can be seen live on Speed TV on Saturday, October 20 at 2:30pm PDT. Now if only there were some other GT1 contenders to scare off...

Yesterday, BBV shot us a few pics of the #4 car in progress, and no surprise -- we like what we see. The final product will be unveiled at a big shindig on Wednesday, and when the cars ultimately take to the track, they'll look as every bit as menacing as they sound. Skulls on race cars are like, totally underrated. The little Michelin man on the front fender just wet himself out of fear.

[Source: Bad Boy Vettes]

Gallery: Bad Boy Vettes C6.R

All photos Copyright (C)2007 BadBoyVettes.com
Bad Boy Vettes C6.R in progress... originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 13 Oct 2007 12:33:00 EST. Take BadBoyVettes.com, for example. Dedicated to covering and rooting for Corvette Racing, this band of supporters has already achieved a great deal. The Bad Boy Vettes skull logo serves as Corvette Racing's unofficial mascot, and it has adorned the race cars' b-pillars since the 2005 24 Hours of Le Mans. That in itself is cool beyond description, but it's nothing compared to what the BBV crew got Corvette Racing to agree to for the final round of the ALMS at Laguna Seca the weekend of October 20.

Bad Boy Vettes has convinced Corvette Racing to let it design the race livery for the pair of C6.Rs that weekend. The #4 car will be revealed at a party on October 17th, and in the image above, you can catch a glimpse of the paint scheme under the spray cans. As if the C6.Rs weren't badass enough to begin with, now they're going to be adorned with giant skulls. Evil FTW!

Conversely, at Autoblog Decentralized World Headquarters, we have had no say whatsoever in the paint scheme of the LeMons entry Damon's preparing.

[Source: Bad Boy Vettes]
Break out the Krylon: Bad Boy Vettes designing C6.R livery for season-ender at Laguna Seca originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2007 15:57:00 EST. Before we get to the story of the race -- the jaw-dropping GT2 finish -- we need to fill you in on the rest of the action. Audi, as expected, took the overall win as Marco Werner drove the #2 car across the finish line, giving Audi its 8th consecutive win at the event. Emanuele Pirro and Frank Biela were the co drivers on the winning machine. The defending champion #1 Audi, which was essentilly rebuilt following a practice crash Thursday night finished fourth overall with Tom Kristensen, Dindo Capello, Allan MacNish, and Le Mans god Tom Kristensen behind the wheel.

In P2, Acura made a smashing debut, taking the first two spots in the class and second and third place overall. The Andretti Green Racing team of bryan Herta, Dario Franchitti, and Tony Kanaan took the class win (2nd overall) in their Acura ARX-01a. They were followed by the Fernandez Racing Acura (3rd overall), with the #7 Penske Porsche taking the final P2 podium spot and fifth place overall.

GT1, as expected, was an all-Corvette affair, with the #4 car piloted by Oliver Gavin, Olivier Beretta, and Max Papis edging its sister, the striking white #3 car helmed by Ron Fellows (in whose honor the car wore its new finish), Johnny O'Connell, and Jan Magnussen. 17 seconds separated the two 'Vette C6.Rs.

That leaves the epic GT2 finish, which we'll detail for you after the jump.

[Sources: ALMS, Motorsport.com]
Continue reading 12 Hours of Sebring ends with Audi win, nail-biting GT2 finish

12 Hours of Sebring ends with Audi win, nail-biting GT2 finish originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 18 Mar 2007 07:19:00 EST. Ron Fellows, making his final Sebring appearance as one of the #3 car's co-drivers, has a similarly liveried limited-production Corvette Z06 named for him. The change to the race car is an obvious tie-in to the production machine, as it's identical in scheme right down to the red fender stripes.

GM points out that this is the first time since Le Mans 2003 that one of Corvette Racing's cars have run in a color other than yellow. Their press release does not point out that 2003 was the year that the Vettes, in their navy blue anniversary livery, were bested by Prodrive's 550 Maranello at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. As of Sebring's 10-hour mark, it looked as if running in a non-yellow color might not the luckiest thing for the C6.R. The O'Connell/Magnussen/Fellows #3 car was running second in GT1 behind the still-yellow #4. The #3 led early in the race, however, and the cars were on the same lap as of the last posted standings, so there's still time left for it go out and bust that color jinx.

UPDATE: #4 car wins GT1 (7th overall), followed by the #3 (8th overall). Now the postseason awards are beginning to pile up as well. Ron Fellows, who co-drives the #3 C6.R with Johnny O'Connell, won his third straight ALMS Driver of the Year award, while his crew chief, Dan Binks was recognized for his efforts and named GT1 Crew Chief of the Year.

And it doesn't end there. This week in Germany, the heart of the C6.R, it's LS7.R motor, was recognized as Global Motorsport Engine of the Year by a jury of 50 race engine engineers. When you consider the breadth of global motorsport and the number of outstanding engines competing on circuits week in and week out, the award becomes even more significant. You don't even need to leave ALMS to find another high-profile powerplant that garnered quite a few headlines of its own this past season.

The C6.R's relentless success and reliability stems largely from the excellence of the LS7.R that lives under its long hood -- a trait that is matched or exceeded by the dedication of its drivers and crew. If history is any indication, we can expect more of the same come March when the 2007 season kicks off at Sebring.

[Source: ALMS]
Corvette Racing's LS7.R named Race Engine of the Year originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Nov 2006 07:58:00 EST. The diesel sports cars started the race from rows two and three after IMSA enacted a late rules-change that allowed Dyson Racing to reduce the weight of its two Lola-AERs. The Dysons secured the pole and second grid positions and were running first and third when an incident involving one of the Penske Spyders and the Highcroft Racing LMP1 car brought out the yellow. On the restart the Audis took the lead and kept it. Dindo Capello and Alan McNish took the overall win in the #2 R10 TDI.

Follow the jump for more action-packed racing pics and to find out how the Corvettes fared in the GT1 Class, and whether or not the Porsche Spyders could pull out another victory in the LMP2 class.

[Various Sources via Motorsport.com and AmericanLeMans.com]
Continue reading ALMS Wrap: Audi, Corvette, Intersport, Risi win in Portland

ALMS Wrap: Audi, Corvette, Intersport, Risi win in Portland originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 24 Jul 2006 11:02:00 EST.
