Just when we thought we were going to wait until the end of March to get our hands on Gran Turismo 5, our friends at Joystiq tell us that Polyphony Digital will release a demo version of hotly anticipated racing game on December 17. The demo will be available on the Playstation Network for download both in Europe and North America, giving long-patient fans a taste of what the full game will be like when it finally arrives in stores.

And as cool as it is that the demo arrives within two weeks time, even cooler is the fact that gamers will be given the opportunity to compete for some nifty prizes. All you have to do is post your best time trial by January 24, 2010. The best time from the U.S. and Canada wins a trip to the Indianapolis 500. A sweet prize, no doubt, but it doesn't come close to the top Euro prize. The best driver from select European countries gets to enter the GT Academy. After completing training the <strike>lucky</strike> skilled gamer will race in the European GT4 Cup in a non-virtual race-spec Nissan 370Z. How amazing is that?

It would be even better if GT5 actually shipped on December 17, but it looks like we won't be racing one of the world's best driving simulators until March at the earliest. Hit the jump to view a slick video that contains more information about the GT Academy.

In times like these some folks have retail therapy and some have donut therapy. But if you've got a tire-smoking car you still want to enjoy no matter what folks are saying about cars and the auto industry, then a contest called Performance Therapy could be for you.

Essentially an online auto show, participation is simple: take a picture of your car and upload. There are nine different categories of photos, from garage to family to action to racing and PhotoChops, and every time someone clicks on your photo you get a vote. More votes equals more chances of winning loot.

There are nine brands behind the contest: Hotchkis Suspensions, Baer Brakes, Rushforth Wheels, Yokohama, MSD Ignition, Flowmaster Exhaust, Red Line Synthetic Oil, Lifeline Fire & Safety Systems, and, of all folks, Hot Wheels. The grand prize winner gets performance parts from each of them, something like $40K worth of mods and goodies. If nothing else, at least it's a reason to have fun with your car and let the world know about it.

Maserati makes beautiful cars. In a contest they held with Architectural Digest, the home of the trident went looking for the best homes for those cars -- not the actual houses, but the garages that house their creations. Entries came in two categories, Existing and Concept, and were judged on "noted architectural element, uniqueness and individuality."

The winning existing garage could barely be considered a garage -- more like a living room where you park your car. The winning concept garage has three turntables that can place cars in three different positions depending on whether you're coming, showing off, or going. You can read the press release after jump and check out the stunning high-res images of the winners' designs below.

Gallery: Winning Garages of Maserati "Design Driven" Competition

[Source: Maserati]
Continue reading Maserati, Architectural Digest celebrate best real and concept garages

Maserati, Architectural Digest celebrate best real and concept garages originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Jul 2009 12:29:00 EST.
Click above for a high-res image gallery of the Ford Transit Connect

Ford is bringing its Transit Connect van to the US this summer with hopes of generating sales to businesses that need 143 cubic feet of cargo space and wouldn't mind car-like fuel economy. To drum up some interest in the Euro-sourced vans, the Blue Oval has just given away five of them to small business owners. One of the winners is a CPR instructor in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Jerry Buffman had been lugging her dummies around in a 2001 Toyota Sienna, but needed more space. Buffman travels to locations with her bags full of CPR equipment and practice dummies, and the soon to be released Transit should make lugging all of her props a bit easier.

To showcase the Transit Connect's flexibility, Ford also gave away the mini cargo vans to a kayak company, a cleaner, a dog care business, and a pet and baby safety company. Ford is looking to introduce the production version of the Transit Connect at the Chicago Auto Show in February, with sales beginning this summer.

Gallery: Ford Transit Connect

[Source: MLIVE]
No Dummies: CPR instructor, others win custom Ford Transit Connect vans originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 10 Jan 2009 08:58:00 EST. The loyal owners were participating in Scion's "United by Individuality" brand campaign, designed to put individuals' modified vehicles in magazines, on billboards, even projected onto movie screens. More than 300 cars made the cut, and they soon found themselves in the Nevada desert for a photo shoot that included racing, tuning events, and even music performances. Shown above is a stunning aerial shot of more than 200 cars parked - very well we might add - at the event. The ad campaign launches in movie theaters July 21, while the other media won't go live until August 4th.

While we all know that a 16-cylinder Bugatti Veyron would leave a 12-cylinder Ferrari 599 GTB choking in its own emissions, two blokes in the UK apparently wanted to check it out for themselves. After witnesses reported the two supercars jockeying for position at high speeds on public highways, police took pursuit in a BMW patrol car. Following velocities of nearly 140 mph in the chase, the Bugatti respectfully pulled over while the Ferrari got away scott free. Fortunately for the Bugatti driver, police officially clocked the 253-mph Veyron going a mere 97 mph. The resulting citation was three points on his license and a fine of just £60 (about $120). We think the outcome would have been much, much uglier in the States. Thanks for the tip, Paul!

First prize was a 2008 Buick Enclave CXL courtesy car used by Tiger during December's 2007 Target World Challenge golf tournament. Tiger won the tournament, finishing seven strokes ahead of '07 Masters champ Zach Johnson. Well, the contest is over and the winner has apparently taken delivery of the Buick, which came complete with a certificate of authenticity signed by Tiger himself. This might well be the only Buick Enclave in circulation that's Upper Deck authenticated.

Naturally, the car's new owner is looking to see if the Tiger connection is something that can be capitalized on, and the ride has been listed on eBay. Fully loaded, finished in Cocoa Metallic over Cocoa Cashmere, and showing just 220 miles on the clock, it's a really nice vehicle. As for the $100,000 Buy It Now price, well, that's ridiculous even with its certified, touched-by-Tiger history. According to the auction listing, eleven people have made offers, but there's no telling if they're anywhere near the asking price. We can't imagine they would be. Our advice: exercise some patience. Garage the Enclave, put the certificate of authenticity in a safe, and offer the whole package at Barrett-Jackson in January. As if by magic, a mundane, dealer-supplied courtesy vehicle becomes a "celebrity car". In B-J's massively hyped, more-money-than-sense environment, a hundred grand seems entirely feasible. Do we hear two hundred? Thanks for the tip, Steve.

Gallery: Buick Enclave touched by Tiger

[Source: eBay]
$100K for a Tiger Woods-used Enclave?

What do you do with a Porsche GT2, a Corvette Z06, and an abandoned aircraft runway? That's obvious: you line both cars up, nail the throttle and crown the victor. Thankfully, that's exactly what the chaps at Autocar did when they pitted the new GT2 against the Z06 on a long piece of straight pavement. No timing lights, no start/finish line, just two guys with heavy right feet and a camera crew to capture the action.

To refresh your memory, the GT2 is the hottest car currently in Porsche's inventory. Under its decklid, a 3.6-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder powerplant pumps out an impressive 530 hp and 500 lb.-ft. of torque. The Chevrolet Z06 has been in showrooms a bit longer, but nothing holds back its 7.0-liter eight-cylinder engine packing a 505 hp punch with 470 lb.-ft. of torque. Oh yeah, we should mention (before you all point it out) the German costs about twice as much as the American.

We won't tell you who wins the Porsche vs. Chevrolet battle, but we will say the contest will be significantly more "balanced" when the blokes can bring the upcoming 620 hp 2009 Corvette ZR1 to the tarmac. Thanks for the tip Mike!

That's what the new hatchback from Alfa Romeo will be called, by virtue of an international competition to choose the car's name.

The Italian automaker is getting farther away from the Alfa-numeric (pun intended) nomenclature and giving its models more emotive nameplates instead. The web contest offered online voters a choice of twelve names, and Furiosa got the most votes, beating out Agea, Enos, Everson, Fira, Milo, Mod, Nevo, Solea, Sparvo, Velvetta and Ventura. While some proposals had merit, some of the rejected names were a little cheesy (try to figure out which).

So we can stop calling it the Alfa Junior. The Furiosa is anticipated to make its debut at the Geneva show in March.
Volvo has one of the coolest contests going right now: the Volvo for Life campaign. The grand prize winner gets a brand new, Swedish-built, rolling tribute to safety every three years for the rest of his or her life. In our book, the coolest part of the contest is how one actually wins the prize. Friends and family nominate potential winners based on their contributions in the fields of safety, quality of life, or environment, and now Volvo is rewarding these pioneers with additional cash to distribute to their favorite charities. The three grand prize winners (one from each category) now get $100,000 for the charity of their choice, and the 2nd and 3rd runners up in each category receive $25,000. That's a lot of cash, which can help a lot of people.

It's nice to see a contest that doesn't rely solely on ridiculous odds to pick a winner. A Volvo every three years and $100,000 for charity is proof that sometimes it pays to do for others. Between this and the quest for buried treasure, the marketing folks at Volvo sure can whip up a contest.

But yesterday it hit me again that we're actually giving away a vehicle, a monumental feat considering that last year we could barely find the funds to offer you guys and gals an iPod for being such good readers.

So please, take advantage of our success and win this 2007 Dodge Nitro R/T. We want you to have it (we're not eligible to win, doh!). Enter the Sweepstakes by clicking here, and then enter tomorrow and every day after (I'll remind you, don't worry) until the giveaway concludes at midnight on June 14th.

Much thanks to The Car Blogger, iamhoff.com and Auto Concourse for hosting permanent banners promoting the Sweeps on their homepages, as well as The Garage Blog and Automotive Addicts for posting on the giveaway.

If you post about the Autoblog Nitro Sweepstakes on your own website or add a permanet banner (available after the jump), please make sure you link it here and drop us a line at abresearch at gmail dot com to let us know so we can include your site in the list below.

Permanent Banner
For today only, you can win a black 30GB iPod Video and Harman Kardon Drive + Play kit from Autoblog Latino by visiting this post and leaving a comment. Don't you love how simple sweepstakes are on a blog? Only one comment/entry is allowed per person and the sweepstakes ends tonight, May 15th, at 11:59PM EST. A link to the official rules can be found here. Since summer is here and the open road has begun calling out to us all, we couldn't think of a more perfect prize as an iPod outfitted for your car with a Harman Kardon Drive + Play kit to get things rolling. So hurry over to Autoblog Latino to leave your comment and enter, as time is running out.
Win an iPod Video and Harman Kardon Drive + Play kit from Autoblog Latino originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 15 May 2007 13:33:00 EST.
Carmakers pay their ad agencies a great deal of money to come up with concepts that will bring buyers to the brand. We hope they kept the receipt for this one. But for those of you who want to win a new Sebring, and we know you are out there, here is what you have to do: 1. Be at least 18 years old. 2. Have a baby exactly at 2:03:04 AM on 5/6/07, or be the adopted parents or guardians of a baby born at that exact moment. 3. Send the birth certificate in to enter the random drawing. Ready for this? It's called the "Chrysler Sebring Bundle of Joy" promotion.

For some reason Chrysler wants to celebrate the birth of a baby born on the twice-every-century 2-3-4-5-6-7 date combination, and thinks a free Sebring is the way to do that. Even though it happens two times -- am and pm -- only the early birds will get the... Sebring. No word on how much of the baby has to be "born" at the time. We also wonder if there will be enough babies magically born at the chosen hour to create a Sebring Generation.

It's a trick we learned here at Autoblog long ago, and it's something we love to do. Supplying your readers with free stuff is a small price to pay for exposure, and so our new sister site, Autoblog Latino, has launched its first ever sweepstakes. There are three prizes that have as their theme the Nissan 350Z.

Nissan 350Z: Behind the Resurrection of a Legend by John Lamm, a hardcover book detailing the birth of the modern 350Z, worthy successor to the Datsun 240Z.

Z: 35 Years of Nissan's Sports Car by Pete Evanow: a hardcover book covering the introduction of the popular Datsun 240Z and the evolution to the re-introduction of the 350Z.

Nissan Datsun Z/Zx Ads: From the Beginning, 1970-2004 by Harry W. Ilaria: a CD-ROM with ads in convenient multimedia formats, accessible through a special custom interface.

In the truest tradition of the blog sweepstakes, entering is super simple. Just visit this post on Autoblog Latino and leave a comment. Don't forget to confirm your comment and click here to see the official rules. One entry per person is allowed and the sweepstakes is limited to residents in the 50 United States.

This is Autoblog Latino's first stab at giving stuff away, and we're told there will likely be more opportunities to win free stuff in the future. We'll keep you posted on those, but for now head on over and score yourself an easy win.

[Source: Autoblog Latino]
Autoblog Latino giving away free stuff! originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 25 Apr 2007 14:20:00 EST. Scion appears to have a lock on who their fans are and what they want, and then constantly works on new ways to give it to them. Now they're doing it again with The Prospect: Rise of an Unsigned Emcee.

Now in its third year, the just-launched Prospect is Scion's latest search for an unsigned rapper. Submit your lyrics to the Prospect site, and if you're the fairest one of them all, you'll get $5,000, a track made with producer Hi-Tek, a video shoot, and inclusion on a Scion-sponsored mini-tour. You'll also get to talk a lot about Scion.

The contest's website is here, complete with all the rules and requirements. You have until August. Now what rhymes with "Rollin' in my xB. . . ."

[Source: Brandweek]<shapetype id="_x0000_t75" stroked="f" filled="f" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" o:preferrelative="t" o:spt="75" coordsize="21600,21600"><stroke joinstyle="miter"></stroke>

Dodge announced two new contests today, the grand prizes of which are a Dodge Ram 1500 and Dodge Avenger sedan.

The first is called the Dodge Ram Rock'em Sock'em Challenge (Official Rules), which is obviously inspired by those Ram commercials in which the Dodge truck socks the block off of its toy challenger. In the game, you have to hit your arrow keys in a particular sequence, which correspond to punches on the screen. If you pop the noggin of your competitor fast enough, you'll be entered in the Tier 1 Heavyweight prize division for a chance to win a Ram of our own.

The second contest is called the Dodge Avenger - Avenge Your Commute. To enter, you need to compose a 250-word essay about the trials and tribulations of your daily commute, and why the new Dodge Avenger would your daily slog that much better. If your essay is the best, you'll be flown to L.A. on April 16th, which happens to be National Stress Awareness Day, and get to demolish a "replica" of your own car and drive home in a new Avenger.

[Source: Dodge]
Dodge launches two new contests to win cars originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Mar 2007 18:56:00 EST. The online clue board is located here, and with a new installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise set to debut May 25th, the Disney website is a part of the hunt, as well. At World's End isn't just the name of the new Pirates movie, it just might also be the location of this year's dig as well.

This bit from the current contest entry leads us to wonder what will be at the end of your shovel when you finally strike gold: "The treasure this year will shock even the toughest swashbucklers out there." Could it be one of the SEMA C30s? All of them? We can only hope and pray, though last year's XC90 was hardly a bad prize in its own right. As we said in our post on last year's contest (one of the most commented on Autoblog posts of all time with 1,271 comments), tying into a hit movie franchise, giving away a vehicle or two and doing it in such a fun and different way is a refreshing change for Volvo. Now, all for one and... that's it, go get your car.

[Source: Volvo via GTChannel.com]
Volvo embarking on new treasure hunt adventure originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Mar 2007 17:01:00 EST. The prize at stake in our final celebration of the new Autoblog Podcast is an 80GB iPod Video valued at $349. So far we've received more votes quicker than any of the other three sweepstakes, which is to be expected considering the carrott at the end of this stick.

If you haven't entered yet, doing so is simple. Just download and listen to the Autoblog Podcast #53, our latest (you can subscribe to it in iTunes so you won't miss future episodes by clicking here). This year's theme is "P.L.E.A.S.E. Innovate", which corresponds to six features the winning entry should exhibit: Pleasurable (to drive), Lively, Efficient, Accessible, Simple, and Ecological. This year there are 30 projects that are in the running and we've assembled them all for your perusal in high-res galleries after the jump. If you like wild concepts that have no respect for reality, then you'll be in heaven below the fold. You can also vote for your favorite concept here.

Since the whole challenge is being sponsored by the XBOX 360, the winning project will not only be on display in full scale at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show, it will also be playable in a yet-to-be-named video game for the XBOX 360.

Follow the jump to see high-resolution galleries of each entry.

[Source: Peugeot Concours Design]
Continue reading Galleries of the 2007 Peugeot Design Contest entries

Galleries of the 2007 Peugeot Design Contest entries originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 26 Dec 2006 20:05:00 EST.
