With its styling based heavily on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/22/details-emerge-about-bmws-new-flagship-sedan/">BMW Concept CS</a> (pictured above), the platform for the new flagship will be shared with the new 7 Series. Under the hood, most expect to see a 6.0-liter V12 based on the current M5's V10, or a twin-turbocharged V8 like the one rumored for the next-gen M5. Even though both of those engines promise prodigious amounts of power, and the lightened chassis will be tuned for performance, BMW insists the new car will not be badged an M8. Regardless, we seem to recall that the lack of an M badge on the mid-90's BMW 850CSi didn't seem to deter enthusiasts.</p>

Okay, crossovers, not trucks. Whatever you want to call the tall, heavy wagons, that's your business. Within the next five years, BMW's planning on adding three new truck-type things to their lineup. The X6 will arrive next year, followed by the 4x4 version of the MINI in 2009, and the also-small X1 in 2010. The MINI 4x4 will run a Getrag-developed AWD system, and we'd expect the X1 to use the basic component set of the forthcoming 1-series. The Concept CS is also headed for production, and it will be positioned above the 7-series sedan carrying 8 and 12 cylinder powerplants. Imagine that, instead of the 7-series heading up the Ultimate Driving Machine lineup, there'd be a long-hooded GT-looker with a fastback roofline. Even the news that BMW is following the money into SUVs and committing bigtime with multiple new models, it could be worse. The X5 is handsome, and that general motif is present on the X6, and we'd expect it to scale down to the X1 decently, leaving only the hideous X3 as a pimple on the face of BMW's SAVs. <br /><br />[Source: Autocar]<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-cs-1/low/">BMW Concept CS</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-cs-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/conceptcs01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-cs-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/conceptcs02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-cs-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/conceptcs03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-cs-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/conceptcs04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-cs-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/conceptcs05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-live-from-frankfurt/low/">BMW X6 - Live from Frankfurt</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-live-from-frankfurt/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/x6_ah_concept_1280_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-live-from-frankfurt/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/x6_ah_concept_1280_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-live-from-frankfurt/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/x6_ah_concept_1280_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-live-from-frankfurt/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/x6_ah_concept_1280_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-live-from-frankfurt/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/x6_ah_concept_1280_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/11/08/more-details-on-bmws-future-4x4-lineup/">More details on BMW's future 4x4 lineup</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 08 Nov 2007 08:33:00 EST. But the real changes are likely to come from underneath.<br /><br />A longer wheelbase, partnered with a wider track, will be utilized to keep with BMW's handling ethos, while new engine choices, including a hybrid and twin-turbo V8 diesel will provide motivation. A new ZF eight-speed gearbox is almost certain, along with a revised iDrive system and several new safety features.<br /><br />Look out for the refresh in 2009, with a full redesign sometime next decade.<br /><br />[Source: Autogepot via <a href="http://www.motorauthority.com/news/sedans/spy-shots-2009-bmw-7-series-2/">Motor Authority</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/06/21/spy-shots-2009-bmw-7-series/">Spy Shots: 2009 BMW 7-series</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 21 Jun 2007 08:04:00 EST. This news comes from the mouth of BMW North America honcho Tom Purves, who told <em>Automotive News</em>, "We have a reasonable number of examples where we have built a concept car and relatively small examples where we have not built a concept car."<br /><br />Additionally, Purves noted that his US dealer network is already very excited about the concept. If the post-Shanghai market research brings positive news, it's pretty likely that a production 4-seater based on the CS would get the green light. The new car would be positioned <em>above </em>the 7-series in the automaker's lineup.<br /><br />[Source: Automotive News - sub. req'd]<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-cs/low/">BMW Concept CS</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-cs/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/6301162.w700_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-cs/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/6301168.w700_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-cs/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/6301177.w600_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-cs/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/6301189.w600_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-cs/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/6301201.w600_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/05/21/production-take-on-bmw-cs-concept-likely/">Production take on BMW CS Concept likely</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 21 May 2007 06:53:00 EST.
