4Ford, Smith Electric prepping ten Transit vans for test fleet in Germany

The U.S. will be getting Ford's small, all-electric Transit Connect Electric utility van by the end of this year. Over in Germany, ten units of the larger Transit van will be converted to run on electric power by Smith Electric Vehicles for Ford's colognE-mobil project, which is already underway.

Ford of Europe has its headquarters in the German city of Cologne (Köln), so an electric vehicle partnership between the city and the automaker doesn't come as a surprise. Ford has announced that the company's plant in Cologne, Germany is going to use electricity that comes exclusively from renewable sources. The energy comes from three hydro-power plants in Norway and Sweden that are owned by Vannkraft AS (Norway) and Fortum AB (Sweden), respectively, and provided to Ford through Rhein Energie AG.
