This could be big. It looks like Coda Automotive's follow up to its Sedan might have an especially desirable quality: a low price tag. The California company's cooperative effort with Great Wall Motors has moved on from its LoI (Letter of Intent) status to the official we-are-really-going-forward-with-this stage. As well, the concept behind the vehicle itself has been fleshed out a bit and contracts have been signed, using the Beijing International Motor Show as backdrop.
Coda Electric Car
It's been a long time coming, but the $39,900 Coda Sedan will soon finally be available, and the place where it will be sold first, most likely, is the long-standing Marvin K. Brown Auto Center in San Diego. In a statement, the Chairman and CEO of the dealership, David Grundstrom, was quite optimistic about the car's prospects: "It's clear San Diegans are increasingly interested in zero-emission vehicles, and the Coda sedan will resonate with the local community." Just three days after Michael Jackson, Coda Automotive's senior vice president of global sales, marketing and distribution , resigned to start his own company, the company's CEO, Kevin Czinger, is also stepping down from his position. Czinger, who has pretty much been the public face of the Miles Electric Vehicles spin-off since he joined in 2008 – and a substantial shareholder – will adopt the role of senior strategic advisor.
Coda Holdings, the California-based company that will supply advanced battery systems for the upcoming Coda Sedan, has added former General Electric and HD Supply executive Mark Jamieson to its expanding team of employees. Jamieson was appointed as Coda's chief financial officer (CFO) and will oversea the company's finances, human resources department, information technology and recruiting efforts.
Earlier this month, Coda Automotive CEO Kevin Czinger spoke at the Moving Ahead 2010 conference at Ohio State University and the official word from the company at the time was that Ohio was being considered for the company's battery plant. Today, Coda announced that Ohio will indeed be where Coda will build "an automotive-grade lithium ion battery system manufacturing facility" – if government money comes through.
