With multiple states legalizing marijuana, government agencies are scrambling to research the effect of the drug on drivers. CNN recently took a look at operating a motor vehicle under the influence of pot by subjecting three users in Washington state to a little driving test with the help of a local sheriff's department. The results are a little surprising, with even casual smokers able to safely operate a car with up to five times the state's new legal limit in their blood stream. At worst, the smokers were actually more cautious on the course than they were before partaking.

Once the levels increased, however, the story changed dramatically, with two participants showing obvious signs of impairment. Heavy user Addy, meanwhile, continued to perform admirably up until the very last stage of the study.
At fourteen years of age, Kathryn DiMaria has already done what many self-proclaimed gearheads won't even attempt in their lifetimes. The Dearborn, Michigan teen is rebuilding a car from the ground up.

The intrepid youngster asked her parents when she was just twelve to start a Pontiac Fiero project, even offering to pony up all the funds herself. Father, Jerry DiMaria only expected the project to last a few months, but two years later, Kathryn is still at it. In this CNN video, the two are at Maker Faire (a DIY festival) rebuilding a 3.4-liter V6 engine out of a Chevrolet Camaro to replace the 2.8-liter mill found in the Fiero.

The whole family hast pitched in, with Kathryn's mother teaching her how to sew in order to complete the interior, father Jerry providing much of the technical know-how, and even her sister is chronicling Kathryn's progress through photos. Jerry even started a thread in a Fiero forum which has been live for two years and is now 22 pages long. Of the project, one forum member wrote, "welcome to the madness."

Apparently math and science lessons are coming into play in her project, hopefully putting an end to the "Why do I need to learn this?" argument, at least among her classmates. The lessons will hopefully allow Kathryn to follow her dream to become an engineer. The target date for the project's completion is Kathryn's sweet 16. You can check out her progress in the video below.
Continue reading CNN chronicles young girl building Pontiac Fiero

CNN chronicles young girl building Pontiac Fiero originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 12:45:00 EST.
Detroit must be good SEO for CNN, as it continues to point to the Motor City and tell carmakers everything they're doing wrong. I imagine most manufacturing companies enjoy getting advice from the media. We're so good at it.

For the most part, the ideas just rehash things you probably already knew. Carmakers certainly do. Who doesn't want higher residual values? Who doesn't want to build and sell more luxury vehicles? Family sedans?

But what I find more upsetting are some idiotic statements, such as comparing the percentage of crossovers built by one company that doesn't have a full-size truck to one that does. It makes for some neat numbers, but unfairly so. I hate when any story makes me sound like an apologist for Detroit. Of course, no one in Detroit wants its key industry to do poorly again, and it is possible, but let Detroit win or lose on its own merits, not some made-up ones.

Anyway, much to my chagrin, CNN's list of eight reason for Detroit to still worry follows below:
Continue reading CNN outlines 8 reasons why Detroit automakers must improve

CNN outlines 8 reasons why Detroit automakers must improve originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 02 Jun 2012 17:02:00 EST.
CNN revealed a confidential memo written in Japanese on the Anderson Cooper 360 show last night that it contends shows Toyota engineers found an electrical problem that caused sudden unintended acceleration in a pre-production test vehicle. The news organization commissioned three separate translations of the documents, though Toyota has objected to the accuracy of each.

Findings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and National Research Council have both supported Toyota's original explanation of sudden unintended acceleration being caused by either sticky gas pedals, trapped floor mats or human error. Toyota has never admitted that electronic or software issues were to blame for any reported cases of SUA, and every investigation into the matter has failed to identify the automaker as responsible.

Toyota does admit the document in question was not provided to the federal government during their investigations, but explains that "the test and document had nothing to do with unintended acceleration, or a defect, or a safety flaw of any kind." Rather, Toyota insists the document refers to pre-production testing of the company's adaptive cruise control system on a version of the Lexus LS 460 sold in Japan and Europe. A Toyota electrical engineer told CNN that the cruise control system acted exactly as it should when they input an abnormal signal, and that the test resulted in further refinements to the system.

We've embedded the CNN video report after the jump, which also includes anecdotal testimony from one Lexus owner who claims that she has experienced SUA in the period since federal investigators released their findings. Toyota inspected her vehicle and provided data from sensors in her car that showed in her case, acceleration was caused by pedal misapplication. You can also read Toyota's official response just below the video.
Continue reading CNN reveals Toyota memo that purports to show sudden acceleration caused by electronics

CNN reveals Toyota memo that purports to show sudden acceleration caused by electronics originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Mar 2012 10:30:00 EST. Man buys Chevrolet Camaro SS for $5.28 - Click above to watch the video after the jump

Penny auction sites like QuiBids or Beezid that advertise $18 iPads and $15 laptops sound too good to be true, and some simple math shows that the sites end up winning big in the end. That isn't always the case, though - at least not when it comes to pony cars. CNN reports that Jonathan Mason of Michigan purchased a brand-new Bumblebee yellow Chevrolet Camaro SS for only $5.28 using the site Fastpennycars.com.

Amazing, right? Well, before you trip over your mouse on the way to the site, keep in mind that each bid of one penny costs 80 actual cents, and there were a total of 528 bids. Mason's Camaro only cost him $5.28 plus the cost of any bids, but the site collected $422.40 in overall bids. That's a far cry from a $31,000 Camaro, but keep in mind that Fast Penny Cars is a newer site, without a big following like QuiBids. On QuiBids, an iPod Touch will sell for $10, or 1,000 bids at 60 cents each, which is quite a deal for the website. Well, that was the case until this story broke. Fastpennycars.com is now so backed up with traffic, we couldn't even get to the homepage.

A lot of emails arrive in our inbox every day, as you might imagine. We're not able to respond to all of them, sadly, and besides, we don't know why the bed of your 1993 GMC Sierra squeaks and we apologize in advance for not looking at your blog chronicling the hottest auto trends of Belarus. That said, we do respond to as many as possible, and we appreciate all of your tips. Every now and then, we receive very special emails that we take to heart and help out in any way we can. One such electronic letter arrived the other day from an Autoblog reader named Josh.

Josh says that he's a fanatical reader of the site (never hurts...), the owner of a 2005 Chevrolet Corvette and he even works for General Motors in Flint, Michigan. Josh is also a man looking to adopt a child with his wife, Wendy. The couple has gone through the process of applying for an adoption, passed with flying colors and now have been told they must simply wait.

Well, they've been waiting... and waiting, with no calls from the adoption authorities. Rather than dismiss the process or wait for years, the two have taken to marketing themselves. First, they printed up t-shirts and business cards. Now, Josh and Wendy have decided to go even bigger - as in billboard big. Alongside Michigan's Interstate 75 in Grand Blanc, you might see their smiling faces as well as a phone number to call and get in touch with them. The billboard in question looks like the one above (okay, so we've taken the CBS Outdoor art and touched it up a bit so you can see the information a bit more clearly).

It's a sad state of affairs when an approved and eager couple aren't able to find a baby waiting to go to real home. Their extraordinary promotion efforts says a lot about how much Josh and Wendy are eager to raise a bundle of joy, and we wish them luck. It's not just Autoblog trying to lend a helping hand, CNN caught up with Josh and Wendy and you can view the clip after the jump.
Take one Chattanooga, Tennessee police cruiser, add a dog named Winston, and subtract one bumper. That's the math caught on video when Winston decided for reasons only he knows to completely tear off the bumper of the moving police car.

Kudos go to the officer driving the patrol car, who showed marvelous restraint in not simply making a Winston pancake. Following a stint in an animal shelter (where he was a model of good behavior), Winston has been sentenced to obedience school and his owner has bought him a Peterbilt for a chew toy when he gets out. Follow the jump for the action in both a CNN new package and via unedited police dashboard camera footage. Thanks for the tip, Peter!

Both the second- and third-generation Prius are part of Toyota's massive recall - the former for floormat problems, the latter for braking issues - but a new incident from California has the automaker looking into more potential issues with the second-generation car.

As CNN tells it, Jim Sikes was driving his Prius on Interstate 8 in San Diego County when he pushed the gas pedal to pass a slow-moving car, but then, as Sikes says, "[the pedal] did something kind of funny ... it jumped and it just stuck there." Sikes called 911 for assistance, but a California Highway Patrol officer caught up to the car, and the officer used a loudspeaker to give Sikes instructions on how to safely stop the vehicle with the emergency brake. "As it was going, I was trying the brakes... it wasn't stopping," Sikes recounts. The highway patrol officer said that Sikes had reached speeds of over 90 miles per hour.

Neither Sikes or any other drivers were hurt during this alleged unintended acceleration incident. In a statement issued Monday night, Toyota says that it has dispatched a field technical specialist to investigate the case. Click through the jump to watch the CNN video and you can read more about it in Los Angeles Times link below. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

It looks like Wales hired Danny Boyle or Quentin Tarantino to create a PSA to showcase the dangers of texting while driving (it was actually Peter Watkins-Hughes). As these things do, it starts off with a couple of teenagers doing what teenagers do -- in this case, sending text messages from behind the wheel. The accident is cinematic in its graphic detail, trauma, and blood. Just when you think it's over... well, we won't spoil it, but let's just say it ain't short and it ain't pretty. Even as Ford applauded the White House, saying "One of the things we've never had in the past is an administration that wants to pull all the parties together and figure out an energy policy and how to make a strong automotive industry and he is doing that," he also told CNN's Larry King: "I guess I never thought I'd live to see the day where the CEO of General Motors was dismissed by the President of the United States."

Of course, Ford isn't alone in being shocked, but there is quite a range of opinion on the matter: Some say GM taking government loans (as opposed to private sector loans) changed the rules, and the government needed to protect its investment; others say it was government interference. Regardless, the way things are going, we would be surprised if that were the last "shocking" development in the car industry saga.

[Source: The Detroit Free Press]
REPORT: Bill Ford, Jr. "shocked" at Wagoner's ousting originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Apr 2009 18:00:00 EST. Flying cars are big, naturally, as are semi-automated machines like the Lexus Tom Cruise drives in Minority Report (on sale at eBay Motors for a Buy it Now price of $76,000) or the Audi featured in I, Robot. CNN is running a cool interactive poll where readers can rank ten pre-selected "future cars" in the order they feel best represents what the car of the future should be like. Personally, I lean more towards Rick Deckard's ride than that of, say, George Jetson. Bruce Willis' cab from The Fifth Element is up there on my list, too. But that's just me. Check out the poll, get your votes in, and feel free to tell us what your faves are in the comments.

[Source: CNN.com]
Geek Alert! To make the list, each car had to have a base price of under $16,000, be fuel-efficient, and offer good utility.

Without further ado, here's what they came up with. We've listed them from lowest to highest base price:

Nissan Versa - $12, 450

Scion xA - $12, 780

Dodge Caliber - $13,425

Ford Focus - $13,450

Mazda3 -$13, 710

Honda Fit - $13,850

Kia Sportage - $15,900

In effect, they're running out of gas in order to save some.

In many cases, roadside assist services provide just one free gallon of fuel, which means that people arehanging out on shoulders of many California roadways for hours (a less-than-safe practice) in order to save afew bucks.
