<br />
French director Claude LeLouch made a film called <em>C'etait un Rendezvous</em> that featured a car being driven through the streets of Paris at dawn, by someone who would not stop for any reason - not lights, not cars, nothing. And the whole thing was done in one take. When it was shown in 1976 the public outrage caused it to be banned. Those are the facts. The rest, 36 years later - since LeLouch wouldn't ever reveal who drove or what he (or she) was driving - is still myth, legend and Wikipedia supposition.<br />
<br />
The mythology is still so potent that a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=c%27etait+un+rendezvous&amp;oq=c%27eta&amp;gs_l=youtube.3.0.0l10.243.1850.0.2954.7.5.1.1.2.0.159.440.3j2.5.0...0.0...1ac.1.nTIr-5hMrP0">search on YouTube</a> will bring up the movie itself, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDXFvtVlYcM">the making of</a>, and a ton of videos about the movie or made in homage to it, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBbqrHQKOQc">like this one</a> by Lamborghini. Fitting that it is no longer relegated to the small screen with a Blu-ray release courtesy of the UK's Spirit Level Film.<br />
<br />
The launch of the home version is accompanied by a contest that will see someone getting a Ferrari for a weekend and a driving club membership. If you watch it, you'll find the film itself is almost just as entertaining, and <em><a href="http://www.hungertv.com/film/feature/film-cetait-un-rendezvous/">Hunger TV</a></em> has a longer piece on its background. There's a trailer for it just <a href="/2013/01/02/c-e-tait-un-rendezvous-coming-to-blu-ray-w-video/#continued">below</a> along with a press release announcing the Blu-ray edition.<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/01/04/c-etait-un-rendezvous-coming-to-blu-ray-w-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em><em>Cʼétait un Rendezvous</em> coming to Blu-ray [w/video]</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/01/04/c-etait-un-rendezvous-coming-to-blu-ray-w-video/"><em>Cʼétait un Rendezvous</em> coming to Blu-ray [w/video]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 04 Jan 2013 10:44:00 EST. <br /> "Every major city must have a great race track hidden in it somewhere." So starts <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/jay+leno">Jay Leno's</a> first car mini-film, <em>The Fast and the Famous</em>. The conceit is this: like <em>all</em> car guys (and gals), Leno acknowledges that the greatest car movie ever made is <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/rendezvous">Claude Lelouch's <em>C'etait un Rendez-Vous</em></a>. With that in mind, Jay gets half-a-dozen cameras mounted up to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/08/video-jay-leno-gets-behind-the-wheel-of-the-mercedes-benz-sls-a/">same red SLS AMG he had in his garage</a> and goes semi-hooning through the streets of Los Angeles in a fun homage to Lelouch's Seventies masterpiece. <br /> <br /> Of course, not just any streets. Leno comes up with the hypothesis that LA's hidden circuit is Mulholland east to Laurel Canyon south to Sunset Boulevard west to Coldwater Canyon north back to Mulholland. Interestingly, not only is this route about 13 miles long - similar in length to Germany's famed N&uuml;rburgring Nordschleife - but it's also somewhat shaped like the Nordschleife. A very cool coincidence if you ask us. <br /> <br /> Is he right? As a near-lifelong Angleno this particular writer agrees, sorta. If there was a way to magically ban all traffic from Laurel and Coldwater Canyons then yeah, totally. Especially as Sunset and Mulholland are usually alright if you pick the right time of day. But as you'll see in the making of, this ten minute clip took three days to shoot. However, we think we know of a hidden race track laying just <em>outside</em> the city of angels, but we'll save that for another day. Until then, jump to <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/29/video-jay-leno-recreates-cetait-un-rendez-vous-on-las/#continued">watch both videos</a>.<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/29/video-jay-leno-recreates-cetait-un-rendez-vous-on-las/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>VIDEO: Jay Leno recreates <i>C'etait un Rendez-Vous</i> on LA's "Nürburgring"</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/29/video-jay-leno-recreates-cetait-un-rendez-vous-on-las/">VIDEO: Jay Leno recreates <i>C'etait un Rendez-Vous</i> on LA's "Nürburgring"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 29 Dec 2009 14:56:00 EST. <br />
Ah yes. Now that you've read the press release on the new and improved <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/2010PorscheTurbo/">2010 Porsche Turbo</a>, wouldn't you like to watch the <em>video</em> press release? Sure you would! Warning: if Claude Lelouch's <em>C'&eacute;tait un Rendezvous</em> is the automotive video equivalent of bacon wrapped <em>pate de foie gras</em>, the three videos we got <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/07/video-2010-porsche-911-turbo-takes-to-the-streets/">after the jump</a> are a rice cake, a sprig of parsley and a can of Tab, respectively. Still, they are videos of the new 997.5 Turbo and in one of them the car is actually moving. That's got to count for something, right?<br />

(See our previous post <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2005/08/04/the-most-reckless-irresponsible-film-youll-ever-see/">here</a>.) Now, thanks to the coding efforts of blogger Brian Hendrix, those of us unfamiliar with the streets of Paris (OK, I recognized the Arc de Triomphe, but that's about it) can follow Lelouche's drive in an animated Google Earth map, synchronized with the video!<br /><br />The animation is <a href="http://bhendrix.com/wall/Gmaps_GVideo_Mashup_Rendezvous.html">here</a>. Syncing the video to the map animation may take a bit of fiddling - I found the video got ahead of the map a couple of times - but pausing the video for a moment fixed it.<br /><br />With Hendrix' brilliant mashup making the rounds of automotive blogs at the moment (Thanks for the tip, Alberto!), a post on <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.leblogauto.com%2F2006%2F08%2Flitinraire_dun_.html&amp;langpair=fr%7Cen&amp;hl=en&amp;safe=off&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;prev=%2Flanguage_tools">Le Blog Auto</a> took us to <a href="http://64.233.179.104/translate_c?hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;langpair=fr%7Cen&amp;u=http://memoiresdestands.hautetfort.com/archive/2006/03/24/c-etait-un-rendez-vous-priorite-3.html&amp;prev=/language_tools">another post</a> that dispels the myths around the making of the film. (Did Lelouch drive, or did he enlist a Grand Prix driver? Was it a Ferrari? A Mercedes? Was it staged?) Well, it turns out it was Lelouche himself, driving his Mercedes 300 (with two passengers!), on the open streets of Paris. The film was made in one take (that's all the film they had). Oh, and the Ferrari rumor? The soundtrack is pure Ferrari, dubbed in after filming.<br /><br />But wait, there's more! Here's a <a href="http://64.233.179.104/translate_c?hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;langpair=fr%7Cen&amp;u=http://video.google.fr/videoplay%3Fdocid%3D-3509399108602105578&amp;prev=/language_tools">video </a>made earlier this year, on the 30th anniversary of the original drive, in which Claude Lelouche returns to the scene and describes how the film was made (in French).<br /><br />[Sources: <a href="http://bhendrix.com/wall/Gmaps_GVideo_Mashup_Rendezvous.html">bhendrix.com</a>, <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.leblogauto.com%2F2006%2F08%2Flitinraire_dun_.html&amp;langpair=fr%7Cen&amp;hl=en&amp;safe=off&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;prev=%2Flanguage_tools">leblogauto</a>, <a href="http://64.233.179.104/translate_c?hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;langpair=fr%7Cen&amp;u=http://memoiresdestands.hautetfort.com/archive/2006/03/24/c-etait-un-rendez-vous-priorite-3.html&amp;prev=/language_tools">memoiresdestands</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/08/15/video-mashup-it-was-an-appointment/">VIDEO + Google Earth: "It was an Appointment"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 15 Aug 2006 16:25:00 EST.
