Hagerty Insurance, which specializes in covering cars already deemed classics, is out with its annual Hot List predicting this year's ten cars that will be future collectibles. Even though it stays under $100,000, it spans almost $74,000 in MSRPs starting with the $23,700 Ford Focus ST on the affordable end and peaking with the $97,395 SRT Viper.

Other notables include the Chevrolet Corvette Convertible 427, what with 2013 being both the 60th anniversary of the brand and the last year of the C6, the 505-horsepower 427 special edition being a send-off to the sports car that always does well in the last model year of a particular generation. The Tesla Model S collects yet another award for delivering a welcome and overdue shock to the electric-car game and is the only sedan to make the list, and the Subaru BRZ also adds to its trophy chest, the lightweight coupe doing so much with so little that it might be worth a packet after Father Time has waved his staff a few times.

You can check out the rest of Hagerty's picks in the press release below.
Continue reading Hagerty predicts this year's future classics

Hagerty predicts this year's future classics originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 31 Jan 2013 17:59:00 EST.
The next stop on the Petrolicious tour of the nation's car stories is Savannah, Georgia. The crew sat down with restorer Andy Greene of Andy Greene's Sports and Vintage Race Cars, and he waxed poetic about his love of Ferraris. See, the shop will work on vintage models and classic road racing cars from other brands, but when it comes to Ferrari, any model from any year can find a place in Greene's garage.

And we'll admit that the yellow Ferrari 250 SWB helps make Greene's case. You can see for yourself what he's talking about in the video below.
Continue reading Petrolicious highlights Andy Greene's love of Ferrari in "The Caretaker"

Petrolicious highlights Andy Greene's love of Ferrari in "The Caretaker" originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 09 Jan 2013 17:13:00 EST.
Like in the UK, California's license plates follow the vehicles they originate on, not the owner, so residents can easily pick out cars that have been in continuous California circulation since way back in the last millennium. A car with yellow tags with black lettering was registered between 1956 and 1962, one with yellow tags with black lettering is from circa 1963 to 1969, and one with blue tags with yellow lettering got them sometime from 1970 to 1982.

State Governor Jerry Brown has signed a bill allowing for the return of those plate styles. If the Department of Motor Vehicles receives 7,500 pre-orders between January 1, 2013 and January 1, 2015 for the vintage replica plates, it will begin issuing them for any vehicle for a personalized plate fee of $50. If fewer than 7,500 pre-orders are received in that two-year span, those who submitted $50 payments will have their money refunded. According to the Los Angeles Times, if the program goes through, buyers of the plates will also have to spend a further $40 every time they renew their registrations.

Hemmings has a little history on why the color of one's plate is such a big deal in The Golden State. For those who don't need the lesson, you can check out the press release below for more information on the program and how to order.

Despite some classic car enthusiasts who apparently only want original vintage plates and not these new, so-called "legacy license plates," we have a feeling this one is a done deal.
Continue reading California DMV opens door to reissuing classic license plates

California DMV opens door to reissuing classic license plates originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 Jan 2013 10:01:00 EST.
Two years ago we went to the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles to meet one of the original Black Beauty Chrysler Imperials from The Green Hornet television show. When the work was done, we were asked if we wanted a tour of the underground vault, to which we of course consented. We were instructed, however, "You can't mention this to anyone." And we didn't.

Now it's a secret that won't need to be kept if you're in LA from December 15 to January 6. The Petersen is opening its vault to the public for the holidays, offering guided tours of the roughly 250 cars in the stash to groups of 10 or fewer. You'll need an additional $25 ticket on top of the $12 museum ticket, but the metal in the photo above will immediately prove its worth. If you haven't seen the "Round Door" Rolls-Royce Phantom I Aerodynamic Coupe, that is worth the price of entry by itself.

Each tour will last for more than an hour, so you won't worry about being rushed. You won't be able to take photos, however, and those under 12 will not be allowed. The press release below will tell you how to get into the automotive safe, and the high-res pics above will help you figure out where you want you want to focus your eyeballs when you get there.
Continue reading Petersen Automotive Museum open its vault to public for first time

Petersen Automotive Museum open its vault to public for first time originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 15 Dec 2012 13:59:00 EST.
If you've ever owned and classic vehicle, you know that keeping one on the road requires a number of untold sacrifices. Of time, of money, and of parts cars.

What about operating a shop that caters only to one specific vintage model? Ask Tim Mings. As a devotee to the Honda N600 and the world's only full-time N600 mechanic, he's owned over 300 of the little hatchbacks and bought out a slew of new old stock inventory to keep as many of the cars on the road as possible. Currently, his collection include the very first Honda N600 sold on American shores: serial No. 1.

Mings says that if you own or have owned an N600 in the greater Los Angeles area, there's a good chance he either has worked on it or will work on it in the near future. We admire his devotion. Check out the quick clip of Mings' exploits below.
Continue reading No one loves the Honda N600 more than Tim Mings

No one loves the Honda N600 more than Tim Mings originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 19:59:00 EST.
In the second part of its coverage of the LeMay Museum in Tacoma, Washington (part one is here), we get even more visual representation of why it bills itself as "America's Museum." There are few places where you can wander through a single collection and see the vintage Rolls-Royce pictured sharing floor space with a Ferrari 308 GTB, an original Mini, a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster and a Ducati.

With 3,500 cars of its own, plus 350 cars donated by private collectors and companies, it might lay claim to being the Smithsonian of American automobilia. There's a short video with more of the goodness below.
Continue reading eGarage looks into the man behind America's Car Museum

eGarage looks into the man behind America's Car Museum originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 30 Aug 2012 19:58:00 EST.
It's a bold step for an institution to brand itself as "America's Car Museum." As a nation obsessed with anything and everything automotive, our tastes are about as varied as they could possibly be. The curators behind the LeMay Museum in Tacoma, Washington seem to understand that, and have collected a rotating stable of machines that include everything from the mighty Ferrari F40 to over-the-top lowriders. Nearly every era and nation of automotive engineering shows its face in one form or another, resulting in a melting pot of cardom. Very cool.

The guys from eGarage recently stopped by to give the museum a once over, focusing their well-trained lenses on the rash of classic metal found inside. If you can't make it to the Pacific Northwest to see the LeMay Museum for yourself, this is probably the next best thing. Check out the quick video below to have a look.
Continue reading Amazing LeMay Museum gets the eGarage treatment

Amazing LeMay Museum gets the eGarage treatment originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Jul 2012 16:58:00 EST. Just when we thought the classic vehicles owned by Saab were safe from the gavel, tragedy strikes. According to Hemmings, the vehicles held in the Saab Cars North America Heritage Collection will be auctioned in an 10-car lot on Friday, February 10. Vehicles like the gorgeous and painfully rare 1956 Type 94 Sonett Super Sport pictured above will join a host of other iconic Saab models for bid in Stearling Heights, Michigan. According to Hemmings, interested parties may submit their bids before noon on Friday to McTevia & Associates, the law firm Saab hired to handle the company's creditors here in the States. A 25 percent cash deposit is required.

The collection includes notable hardware such as a 1967 fastback with 25,353 miles on its triple-carb three-cylinder engine as well as the 1960 96 that won the Royal Automobile Club Rally with Erik Carlsson behind the wheel. There's plenty of history wrapped up in the 11 vehicles up for auction. Head over to Hemmings for more information.
Saab collection to be sold after all - the one in America originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 18:26:00 EST.
Classic cars have been getting all kinds of love and money lately. Classic wheels, not so much. HRE has introduced a new line called the Vintage Series that puts old rims in a new light.

There are three in the range for now. The 454 "five-window" you'll recognize from old Lamborghini Countach posters, the 505 "thick five-spoke" reminscent of the Ferrari 288 GTO and F40, and the 501 "mesh lace" worn to terrific effect by racing Porsches from decades past.

Sized from 18- to 20-inch diameters and from seven to 14 inches wide, all are forged of aerospace-grade alloys and are hand-finished to the customer's order. They just might make it all right to work backwards on your next car project: get the wheels first, add the Countach LP5000 QV later. There's a press release with more info after the jump and, of course, a high-res image gallery.
Continue reading HRE introduces the Vintage Series, modern versions of retro supercar wheels

HRE introduces the Vintage Series, modern versions of retro supercar wheels originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 Feb 2012 14:29:00 EST.
This year marks the fifth anniversary of Mercedes-Benz Classic, the official U.S. restoration arm of the Stuttgart firm. Although it sits on an easy-to-miss corner of yet another ochre-hued industrial complex in Irvine, California, what is inside is anything but common

The technicians who refurbish Benz history believe it is their job to make everyone else believe that no such job has been done. Mercedes Classic isn't where old is made new, but where old is made as-new. And that means that, yes, they will turn down certain requests that go too much against the grain of the brand. You can get a brief look at the men and their machines in the video after the jump, and if you're a fan of the Silver Arrow, then a trip to the Classic Center is highly recommended.
Continue reading Step inside Mercedes-Benz Classic

Step inside Mercedes-Benz Classic originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Oct 2011 16:57:00 EST.
If the muscle car era started in 1964, only to be reinvigorated in the last decade or so, we need a tidy way to label all those memorable cars that came before or don't have the massive cubic inch engines needed to qualify for the muscle category. We'll just call 'em classics.

In the gallery after the break, you'll see a smattering of old Fords, some turned lovingly into hot rods, along with old Cadillacs, Corvairs and convertibles. There's the scattered Studebaker and even a few surprises... like The Most Interesting Man in the World.

We've gone ahead and labeled our classics gallery to the best of our abilities, but a few of these could be off by a year or two and some are pretty much identifiable due to their extreme modifications. No matter, each one is a certified classic - we hope you enjoy the gallery, and we'll see you next year in Woodward!
Classic American cars collect to Cruise originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Aug 2011 19:30:00 EST.
This compilation of racing crashes in the 1930s, '40s, and '50s is a jarring reminder of when auto racing really was a life-or-death venture. Put simply, if you drove a race car during this period, you were as likely to be killed as you were to retire.

Thanks to ever-increasing speeds and no regard for driver and spectator safety, it was common for races to turn deadly. Because of the sacrifices these drivers made, racers, teams and sanctioning bodies have since come together to make racing safer than ever.

If "Killed Myself When I Was Young" interests you, check out the hour-long YouTube video "Grand Prix: The Killer Years," detailing the fight for even basic safety measures in Formula 1. Be advised that neither video is for the faint of heart; both are embedded after the jump.
Continue reading Vintage crash compilation shows how far racing has come

Vintage crash compilation shows how far racing has come originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 22 May 2011 20:02:00 EST.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year was one of our favorite smaller concours, the Huntington Beach Concours d'Elegance in Southern California. Not quite as prestigious as some of the other concours we cover - like Greenwich, happening on the opposite coast on the very same weekend - it's always an eclectic show, featuring everything ranging from hot rods to supercars, pre-war classics and motorcycles. One of the things that makes this show extra special is what makes some real estate worth a lot more than others - location, location, location. Within spitting distance of some of the biggest and best automotive collections in the world, this laid-back exhibition always manages to bring out some huge surprises.

Split over two days, the Saturday show is billed as Hot Rods in the Park, and focuses mainly on American iron, while Sunday is the Concours d'Elegance proper, with more European makes represented. Sunday was the day to see Corvettes, Ferraris, Alfas, Minis, Nimbuses and Ducatis if you're into those kinds of things. We stopped in for a spell on both days, fully prepared to be wowed, and the entrants still blew us away. Sure the muscle cars and classics were cool as usual, but check out the lead sleds, customs and bikes that turned out this year! Highlights included the vintage custom Harleys, '57 "Scraped" Caddy, '61 409 Impala SS and a '42 Willys Americar Coupe Altered drag car. As nice as those were, the standout vehicles of the weekend were even more impressive.

Randy Simmons brought a 1947 Hudson pickup powered by a 7.3-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel. It's an A/DT class SCTA land speed record truck that has run over 135 miles per hour and looks like it could hold a place of honor in just about any museum in the world. Ducati got our attention when we noticed an aluminum paint job on the tank of one of its display bikes. Yep, it was the new limited-edition 1198R Corse - the updated-for-2010 1098R replacement. And then there was a streamlined red motorcycle that stopped us in our tracks. Have you seen The World's Fastest Indian yet? If not, go rent now. The late Burt Munro's highly-modified Indian Scout has been resurrected and brought to a level of finish that would have left him dumbfounded. The bike just emerged from a massive restoration project and was being shown in anticipation of its official coming-out party at Pebble Beach in August. That's when the engine will be re-fired for the first time in 21 years. Even standing still, it's a mighty impressive bike, as well as a bit of motoring and movie history.

Owners and lovers of classic BMWs have what to be thankful for. The Bavarian automaker estimates that roughly one in ten units it produced through the 1980s are still on the road, accounting for some 600,000 classic cars and another 70,000 motorbikes... that it knows of. In order to service and repair all those vintage vehicles, BMW has expanded its Classic Center and opened it up to the public.

Previously known as the Historic Workshop, the classics department has until now been responsible for maintaining the factory's own collection of classics. Now the enlarged division is opening up its doors for privately-owned vehicles, with services extending from re-manufacturing discontinued parts to factory certification and even sales.

In addition to the reborn BMW Classic Center, the company has launched a dedicated motorsport division for vintage Bimmers and Minis, offering race support services and even complete restoration of racing models for such events as the Oldtimer Grand Prix, Goodwood Festival of Speed, Mille Miglia and Le Mans Classic.

With the worldwide count of classic BMWs expanding each year, the Classic Center and Motorsport divisions promise to keep vintage models on the road and track for years to come. Full details are available in the pair of press releases after the jump, and photos in the twin galleries below.

BMW has a treat planned for this year's Villa d'Este on Italy's Lake Como to celebrate the 70th anniversary year of the Munich firm winning the Mille Miglia - and it's not the 328 Mille Miglia Concept Coupé. Instead, the swoopy steel form of the 328 Kamm Coupé will grace the sun's rays after 40 years in obscurity and a rebuild in the works since the last millennium.

Once a representation of the finest in BMW's aero and construction ideas, the Kamm was owned by the German gent Ernst Loof, who founded Veritas (yes, that Veritas), but fell in shambles on the scrap pile in the fifties. BMW resurrected it and has been piecing the racer together for more than a decade, all for this moment. Follow the jump for a press release on the Kamm Coupé's return, and check it out in the gallery of high-res historical pics below.
The crop circles were found in the grass at the West Sussex circuit during final preparations for the Revival, which runs today through Sunday. The Goodwood Revival features vehicles from the 50s and 60s in a retro race, along with period dress and a variety of festivities.

Several aircraft from many different decades have flown safely above the Goodwood course in past years, but in 2003 there was a reported UFO siting at the race and the photographs of the sighting were the talk of the Internets after the alleged incident. We're pretty skeptical about the crop circles, so we're guessing the marketing types over at Goodwood wanted to get one more media push in advance of the 10th anniversary of a very cool weekend event. We would like to see the event in person, but short of little green men beaming us over there, we'll have to sit this one out.

[Source: World Car Fans]
Crop circles appear at Goodwood before race originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 19 Sep 2008 17:31:00 EST. Something about those models seems to compel their owners to preserve them and then bring them out for cruise nights all these decades later. Auto Shows

The Woodward Dream Cruise is one of the biggest events in Michigan all year, with 1.2 million people attending and over 40,000 hot rods, exotics, antiques and oddities coming from near and far to one of the world's most storied roads. Yet each year businesses on the cruise route complain that the annual event actually hurts their bottom line. It isn't so much the weekend that kills profits as it is the fact that cruisers plug up Woodward for the entire week before the big cruise on Saturday.

Organizers of the big event may have helped these businesses by transforming the Woodward-centric cruise into a nine day mega-event that spans into the city of Detroit and other surrounding areas. Some of the new events includes a low-rider competition to kick off the event on August 8 to an AutoblogGreen-friendly green car show, motorcycle show, and a Model T event. Sprinkling cruise events around southeast Michigan will give traveling cruisers a better reason to turn their long cruise weekend into a week-long vacation, which will be great for the ailing Michigan economy, as well. With an event as popular as the Dream Cruise, it's a wonder that it took nearly 15 years for local business leaders to capitalize on the event in any meaningful way. We'll be sure to hit as many events as we possibly can, with plenty of pictures and videos for those of you that don't plan on heading into the mitten state.

Gallery: Woodward Dream Cruise 2007: The Details

[Source: Detroit News]
Woodward Dream Cruise expands to nine-day autothon originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 18 Apr 2008 08:59:00 EST.
Click on the above picture to view the entire Autorama photo gallery

If you went to the Autorama in Detroit, you saw a lot of hot-rods with big-time blowers, some of the best paint-jobs ever, and lots of expensive memorabilia. What you didn't see were Hondas and Toyotas (except one Avalon) because Autorama is all about Motor City Metal with Plymouths, Fords, and Chevys as far as the eye can see. There were hundreds of cars and trucks filling up Cobo Arena and many of the automotive artworks were built by regular folks, which makes it way cooler than when the big corporations fix up our favorite hotrods.

Each year the organizers of Autorama pull in some celebrity talent to bolster attendance, and this year they had pro wrestlers, Sponge Bob, "Overhaulin's" Chris Jacobs, and the legendary mod-master Chip Foose. The line to get an autograph was longer than the checkout at Best Buy the day after Thanksgiving, and Chip gave his fans something worth standing in line for. One lucky kid got an autograph and a hand-drawn sketch from Chip himself.
