During a product briefing earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz told us that 2013 would be the "year of the S-Class." Makes sense, too, since the flagship Mercedes is so very close to finally showing its production-ready face. But the high-tech saloon isn't the only S-Class to talk about this year - quite the contrary. Seen here in decidedly revealing camouflage, the new S-Class Coupe will be joining its four-door compadre in the not-too-distant future, as well.

When it launches, the S-Class Coupe will officially do away with the CL-Class nomenclature. This doesn't come as a huge shock. After all, when the new E-Class coupe and convertible were launched, it officially marked the end of the long-running CLK-Class designation.

Thanks to the interesting camouflage seen here, we have a very good glimpse at how the S-Class Coupe will look when all of the molding and swirly paper are peeled off. Rakish body lines pulled from the CLS-Class meet a much more dynamic front fascia. Out back, there are horizontal taillamps rather than the vertical units used on the current car, and the whole package seems very svelte. Our spy photographer even posits that this will be "the best-looking car from Mercedes-Benz in ages."

But while 2013 may be the year of the S-Class, that could just be limited to spy shots of the new coupe. The production car may not be shown until sometime in 2014, likely in Geneva.
New Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe spied in revealing state of dress originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 19 Feb 2013 14:01:00 EST.
It turns out Ford isn't the only automaker worried about car fire recalls these days. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today issuing a recall for potential fires on various 2011 and 2012 model year Mercedes-Benz vehicles, occurring from a fault with a fuel filter flange. The problem stems from an issue in the molding process that can allow the flange to crack, leak gasoline and possibly cause a fire.

Only a small number (5,800) of vehicles are affected by the recall, but it includes a total of eight different models (C300, CL550, CL63 AMG, E350, GLK350, S400 Hybrid, S550 and S63 AMG) across five vehicle lines (C-Class, CL-Class, E-Class, GLK-Class and S-Class). To fix the potentially hazardous problem, dealers will replace the fuel filter as a part of the recall, which goes into effect next month.

For the full list of affected models, check out the official NHTSA recall notice posted after the jump.
Continue reading Mercedes-Benz recalling 5,800 vehicles over potential fires

Mercedes-Benz recalling 5,800 vehicles over potential fires originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 12 Dec 2012 18:31:00 EST.
A New York man is accusing the New York Police Department of taking his Mercedes-Benz CL Coupe for a spin while he was locked up in jail. The New York Post reports 25-year-old Rashad Lewis was taken into custody on the third of August after officers stopped him for running several red lights. After searching his car, police found 13 fraudulent credit cards. Both Rashad and his passenger, Gregg Humphreys, were charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument and booked in Manhattan. Rashad eventually made bail and was released a week later, and on August 15, he received a ticket from a red light camera showing his car blowing through an intersection.

Except Rashad was cooling his heels in a New York City lockup at the time. Either the police or a civilian employee of the department was having a good time with the Mercedes-Benz. Even worse, the car came back with a broken rear window and scratched paint. Officers listed the car in "good" condition when it was deposited at impound, though the NYPD says Rashad didn't have any issues when he picked up the car five days later.

Rashad now says he wants to sell his car, and his lawyer has made it clear he has no intention of paying the red light camera fine. The NYPD has declined to comment on the incident.
Man accusses NYPD cops of joyriding in his car while he was jailed originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 16:30:00 EST.
Car and Driver Tested continues with an episode comparing the night vision systems from the Big Three German luxury makers. While the testing involves a remote-controlled turkey and a deer crossbred with a construction cone, the most interesting thing the guys from C/D do is to cover the windshields of the cars to try and drive through an autocross course relying on technology alone. Hence the conversation through the sunroofs you see pictured above.

And the results? While we wouldn't call it an epic fail, it is an entertaining one. Night vision is one of the bells and whistles that's probably not destined to trickle down from the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz CL-Class anytime soon, but like most luxury features it's an impressive display of engineering.

Picking up a used luxury car is a great way to save some coin. Letting the previous owner take the fall on depreciation is a smart move, but it's worth remembering that high-end autos carry with them high-end maintenance and repair costs. Using Edmunds.com data, 24/7 Wall Street has compiled what it says are the 10 most expensive vehicles to own, and the list is populated by some not-so-surprising names. BMW and Mercedes-Benz soak up the lion's share of the offenders, though other manufactures make a showing as well. Perhaps not surprisingly, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG takes top honors as the most expensive of them all with a "true cost of ownership" of $245,469. That's in addition to the gullwing supercar's $210,875 MSRP.

The calculations not only factor in deprecation, but also things like fuel, maintenance and insurance costs.

All told, Mercedes-Benz models takes four of the 10 spots on the list. That's twice as many as BMW, and the rest are split between makes like Land Rover, Audi and Nissan. If that last one seems a bit out of place, keep in mind Nissan makes the mighty (and mighty complex) GT-R.
It isn't only the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class that's celebrating its 60-year milestone, the S-Class coupe - now called the CL-Class - has been around (sort of) since the 1952 300S. Its birthday cake comes in the form of the CL Grand Edition, a hand-finished version of the already monumental CL550 or CL600 that adds exclusive paints and leathers, the AMG Sports Package and 20-inch wheels.

The Grand Edition options start at €4,850 (about $6,368 based on current exchange rates), and adding that to the €119,773.50 (about $157,300) price of the CL is probably what you call a bargain. In certain circles, at least.
Continue reading 2012 Mercedes-Benz CL Grand Edition is exactly that

2012 Mercedes-Benz CL Grand Edition is exactly that originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Mar 2012 10:39:00 EST.
In grand tradition, Mercedes-Benz is producing another Grand Edition. This time they're taking the already high-end, high-price, high-style CL-Class coupe and making something God himself might be seen driving. If he could afford it. And if he were European because we Yanks probably won't get the chance to buy one.

Creation of the opulent CL Grand Edition probably takes Mercedes much longer than six days since "handcrafted" and "hand-finished" are used to describe the transformation a CL coupe (either the 550 or 600) undergoes to get the Grand Edition badge. This package is more than just a badge. There's also the choice of three "designo paint finishes" of platinum black metallic, mocha black metallic and for an extra $2,000 the matte magno cashmere white. AMG furnishes front, rear and side sill panels to give it that high-paid sports star look.

Inside, the handcrafted aniline leather is available in black, porcelain and armagnac to go with the CL's standard burl walnut or black ash trim.

Underhood is the CL's bi-turbo 4.6 liter V8 gushing out 435 hp or the CL600's 5.5 liter, bi-turbo V12 with 517 hp. With that kind of power, Our Lady of Blessed Acceleration will never fail you.

If the Grand Edition were available in the States, all the extra luxury would add about $6,400 to the price, not including that unshiny white paint. A wise man might say it's a true bargain considering the special edition only adds about 5% to the base $115,000 price tag.

Some folks say there's no replacement for displacement. We'll agree that there's nothing quite like the roar of a big ol' naturally aspirated V8, but in modern times (and with new fuel efficiency laws taking hold), turbocharging points the way forward.

Nearly every automaker on the planet is scrambling to create turbocharged alternatives to larger-displacement engines, and over the past few years, not offering some sort of forced-induction mill has become quite the automotive faux pas.

Mercedes-Benz recently introduced a pair of twin-turbo V8s in its refreshed 2011 CL-Class, and while our lead feet immediately sprinted towards the bombastic CL63 AMG with its 5.5-liter hand-built heart, there's a lot to be said about the base CL550's all-new 4.6-liter setup. The once-sedate CL550 just got a massive flame lit under its tail, and the end result is a grand coupe that has more personality than ever before.

2011 Mercedes-Benz CL550 4Matic originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 Jul 2011 11:57:00 EST. Miami's a giant concrete brothel; a municipal madame hosting sweaty assignations that pair every income with its choice of cruise, cuisine, club, narcotic or panorama. We were there on a quest for a quest, anxious Lancelots after a late night run in a Series II E-Type over the A1A - yes, the Vanilla Ice road - had turned into a late, late evening with two Spaniards and three Ecuadorians discussing the merits of Top Gear and flying to Bogota to learn Spanish.

That's when Destiny called. Not fate itself, but a ferociously alluring lass with a voice of such fine tenor we had to fight the urge to put the phone down and bow to it whenever she spoke. She requested our presence in Tampa, 271 miles away, and we could only credit fortune for the delivery of a 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG for the purpose. It's the ultimate in modest-yet-graceful savagery (modest compared to the Bentley Continental GT), two tons of animatronic shark - a modern, mechanical Jaws - that would get us safely through the gators, hawks and sawgrass of the Everglades.

It turns out the predators were the least of it. First, we had to get out of the humid human swamp that is Miami. Continue reading...

2011 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 May 2011 11:57:00 EST.
Each Fall, Mother Nature puts on a spectacular display in many parts of the country. As winter approaches and days become shorter, there isn't enough sunlight for trees to support photosynthesis. Starved of their source for energy, the leaves on many variants lose their green chlorophyll and expose bright reds, yellows and purples - hues from glucose trapped in the drying foliage.

Upstate New York is unquestionably a spectacular venue for a driving introduction to the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG. Against a brilliantly painted backdrop, the facelifted full-size coupe, fitted with an all-new twin-turbocharged V8, is a near-perfect chariot for a tour of the Hudson Valley. The 536-horsepower rear-wheel-drive two-door, with its signature greenhouse sans B-pillars, offers an excellent view of the colorful canvas outside the glass. Whether gliding effortlessly down the turnpike, or rustling up a wake of fallen leaves on an autumn country road, the automaker's flagship in this rarified segment seems to have few peers.

What is it like to drive the blown CL63 AMG? Is the big coupe able to effectively balance performance with luxury and technology? Are there any other full-size two-door vehicles on the market for this low volume Mercedes-Benz to compete with? Keep reading to find out...

Mercedes-Benz has codenamed its latest suite of driver convenience aids "Magic," and the automaker will soon introduce a <strike>Magic Carpet</strike> Magic Body Control suspension technology and a Magic Sky Control roof tech. Sadly, there are no wizards nor Tinkerbells involved in any of this, just a whole bunch of electro-hydraulic and magnetorheological engineering.

Magic Body Control is the next generation of Active Body Control. Created with the help of ZF, the system of bushings atop the strut towers neutralizes wheel and body movements at two different frequencies. Daimler's testing indicates that MBC reduces 80 percent of unsavory suspension reverberations. It will show up on the S-Class and CL-Class in 2013.

Magic Sky Control will be seen as soon as next year on the new SLK. Working like photochromatic sunglasses that get darker in the sun, a magnetorheological glass offers a range of opacity from "near totally clear" to "dark blue." It doesn't alter the form of the roof and can be applied to any window, so expect to see this new development work its way through Mercedes-Benz's lineup. This technology could be used around a car's entire greenhouse and perhaps obviate the need for sun visors.

The product pipeline for Mercedes-Benz is a Horn of Plenty over the next three years, with at least seven new models landing on American shores on top of refreshed and new-generation offerings. We've seen the new CL, CLS, S-Class and R-Class, and spy shots of the coming SLK, SL, SLS Convertible, C-Class Coupe.

Beyond those, it's the next B-Class that could be one of the most intriguing additions to the MBUSA playbook. The redesigned hatch will be made more compelling for American buyers, and will be the first Mercedes to arrive Stateside with front-wheel drive and four-cylinder engines. Recent rumors also suggest it will get a rear-wheel-drive AMG version and be the basis for a CLC Shooting Brake, as well as getting its own coupe, crossover and sedan trims.

Other models in the queue will be brand new, not just new to us. These include a C-Class convertible and potential crossover would give M-B 3 Series convertible and X3 competitors. A 100-strong fleet of F-Cell vehicles will be tested in California, and the SLS E-Cell will come in 2013 with 526 horsepower and a 120-mile range. And just as all of those treats are arriving, the same year will see the arrival of the new S-Class Coupe (replacing the CL nameplate), S-Class, E-Class and GL.

We now have first looks at the two 2011 Mercedes CL models that we've really been waiting to see: the CL63 AMG and CL65 AMG. With the front end of the standard model firmed up, there isn't the massive visual difference there used to be between that one and the AMG versions. The CL63, riding on 19-inch wheels, gets the necessary aggression added to the lower front dam, losing its chrome accent and getting mesh instead. Sharper side and rear skirts maintain the anger, but out back AMG's trademark twin oval pipes have been replaced with squoval-like tips shaped to fit the cutout. Under the hood is said to be a 5.5-liter, twin-turbo V8 with 544 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque - a full 26 ponies more than the outgoing 6.3-liter.

The CL65 gets 20-inch wheels and puts some of that chrome back, applying a strip to the center of the front air dam and rear diffuser so you can tell it apart from the CL63. Or, more specifically, so people can tell your boss' CL car from yours. It keeps the joined oval pipes we've seen on 65-series AMG cars for a few years now. Under its hood resides the 6.0-liter, twin-turbo V12 biturbo giving a stout 630 hp and 737 lb-ft. You can examine both in the gallery of photos below.
Mercedes-Benz released the initial photos and information on the 2011 CL-Class earlier today, showing off its updated luxury coupe. We were at the unveiling at the Mercedes-Benz World across from the historic Brooklands racetrack, and now have some live photos to bring you.

The big news for the 2011 CL is the updated engine offerings, which include the new twin-turbo 4.6-liter V8 producing 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet torque in the CL550 model that also offers improved fuel efficiency. The 0-60 mph time has also been cut by half a second. The CL600 (pictured) is also still available, powered by a 510 horsepower, 612 lb-ft torque twin-turbo V12.

Additional upgrades to the CL include new safety technologies including Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Adaptive High Beam Assist, Night View Assist and more. The Mercedes-Benz COMAND system comes standard, featuring USB and SD card interfaces mated to a 7.2 GB hard drive.

Meet the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class. The Silver Arrow has been kind enough to dish the goods on next year's version of the company's flagship coupe and even threw in a passel of photos to boot. So what's new? For starters, the CL550 4MATIC now packs an all-new twin-turbo 4.7-liter V8 engine with around 429 horsepower and a beefy 516 lb-ft of torque. The keen-eyed among you will notice that the eight-pot is down in displacement by almost a full liter, but still manages to crank out 47 more horsepower and a massive 125 lb-ft of torque compared to last year's powerplant. Isn't progress great?

All of that extra grunt means the CL550 4MATIC can scoot to 60 mph in a scant 4.9 seconds, but that's nothing compared to the big-boy CL600. The range-topping coupe can click off the dash to 60 mph in a mere 4.5-seconds - that's within spitting distance of a base Chevrolet Corvette. If you're trying to wrap your brain around how a 4,900-pound two-door can manage to bend the laws of nature, look no further than the 510 horsepower, 612 lb-ft of torque 5.5-liter V12 lurking beneath the sheetmetal. Yeah, that'll do. Hit the jump for the full press release, and sit tight for live photos from the car's debut at this weekend's Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Mercedes-Benz has been accomplishing miraculous feats of incredible horsepower with its large displacement engines. However, those engines haven't been particularly fuel efficient, so M-B is in the process of developing several new mills to meet new CO2 and fuel economy standards in Europe and the U.S.

Mercedes is reportedly adding a new, direct-injected, twin-turbo 4.7-liter V8 engine this fall with an impressive 435 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. The German automaker claims a fuel economy improvement of 22 percent versus one of its last-generation engines outputting a similar amount of power. Those impressive gains come courtesy of the aforementioned direct injection, stop/start technology and more efficient components like the fuel and water pumps. The twin-boosted V8 will reportedly arrive this fall in the CL-Class and S-Class.

Also up for an overhaul is Mercedes' 3.5-liter V6. The new mill will have an all-new 60 degree V block with new intake and exhaust. The sum of these changes is 306 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of twist, and a reported fuel economy savings of 24 percent in the not-for-U.S.-consumption S350. The new 3.5-liter will be an especially welcome addition to the Mercedes lineup, as the current 268 horsepower engine isn't exactly keeping up with similar displacement engines available from Lexus, Infiniti, Cadillac and Acura.

Keep in mind that Mercedes isn't listing official EPA numbers when its touting its new engines' improved efficiency, and Inside Line points out that the EPA rating system doesn't really account for Stop/Start systems in its fuel economy averaging.

Mercedes-Benz Accesssories GMBH has taken a great thing -- the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class -- and enhanced it with a full line of high-end accessories inspired by the vehicle.

First up is MB's leather trinkets, available in the classic black nappa found in the cabin of the CL. Leather products consist of both a wallet and business card cases. The two offerings incorporate beige stitching into the black leather, mimicking the look of the trim in the CL's cockpit and providing a classy alternative to your run-of-the-mill personal accessories.

Next up is the ash timber pens and umbrella handle, reminiscent of the wood trim found in the cockpit of the Benz. And where would you be without your exclusive driving gloves and instrumentation-inspired wristwatch? Rounding out the offerings are a keyring and money clip, both with the MB logo etched into them.

Also available is a die cast model of the CL, whose design, according to DaimlerChrysler, is so perfect that it even got the approval of the Design Center in Sindelfingen.

While products inspired by vehicles are nothing new, we're excited by the high-end parters that are involved in the gig. The accessories are available starting this month at Mercedes-Benz dealerships. Happy shopping!

Done by Wald International, this Executive tuning package includes a new front spoiler, vented front fenders (they're all the rage right now), side skirts and a new rear spoiler we unfortunately can't see from this angle. Wald International also offers a lineup of custom wheels to provide the perfect accent for your CL.

Of course, you don't have a CL because technically they haven't hit dealerships yet, which makes Wald's swift execution of this first aero kit all the more impressive.

[Source: eMercedesBenz]

Related posts:
This is the hot rod version of the swank new CL-Class, and is powered by AMG's purpose-built 6.3 liter V8. Power will be in excess of 500 horses, but we'll have to wait for Mercedes to release the official specs to know exactly how much the new mill pumps out in this application.

The AMG body kit adds visual muscle, while prominent "6.3" badging aft of the front wheels announces the goodness underhood. Open-spoke AMG wheels complete the makeover.

We can't wait to hear the rest of the story from Mercedes!

[Source: eMercedesBenz.com]
First Photo: Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 24 Jul 2006 15:03:00 EST.
