There are few things more inspiring than a blank canvas, and Honda has recently given the company's enthusiasts just that with its new body-in-white Civic. The chassis is perfect for racecar builders who would otherwise spend plenty of time, energy and cost stripping out components in the quest for weight reduction.

Honda officially began selling the body-in-white Civic models in July, and the automaker has already delivered a handful of shells to licensed race teams. If you like what you see, Honda will sell you your very own stripped-down Civic shell for just $3,500, though don't expect niceties like suspension components or an engine and drivetrain. There's word yet on whether or not the shells come with a VIN, of course.

Honda has also announced that HPD will begin offering parts and racing components specifically designed for the 2012 Civic. The company says that the pieces have been crafted for the SCCA World Challenge and the Grand Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. Expect to hear more on that front when the parts go on sale early next year.
Honda now offering body-in-white Civics with HPD racing components originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 Nov 2011 19:30:00 EST.
If you were counting down the days until you could build and price your very own 2012 Honda Civic, you can put away the fingers and toes. The Civic configurator is now online, and there are seven models and up to six different trim levels from which to choose.

Opt for the Civic Sedan and the base DX model comes in at $15,805 ($16,555 with $750 destination). That will net you a 140 horsepower, 1.8-liter four-cylinder mated to a six-speed manual transmission and a lot of standard safety equipment. The top of the line EX-L comes in at $23,455 ($24,205 with destination), and includes leather seats, navigation, USB, Bluetooth, heated front seats and more. The base Civic Coupe commands $200 less than the Sedan, with a starting MSRP of $15,605 ($16,355 with destination). Both the Coupe and Sedan are rated at 39 highway miles per gallon.

The Civic Si Sedan and Coupe are available for $23,155 and $22,955, respectively, complete with a 201 horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder I-VTEC engine matched to a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission. Other standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, heavily bolstered seats with red contrast stitching and a tachometer with rev-limit indicator. Summer tires will bring your total up $200, while the Si with navigation is an extra <strike>$2,000</strike> $1,500 over the base price.

At the top of the Civic food chain (at least in terms of price) is the Hybrid edition, with a starting price of $24,800 with destination. Add leather and navigation and you're looking at an MSRP of $27,500. The Civic Hybrid is rated at 44 mpg in both city and highway driving.

Head over to the Honda website to price your own Civic. Only the GX Natural Gas Vehicle is off limits, as it won't be available until late 2011.

*UPDATE: Honda tells us the navigation system is a $1,500-option.

Honda brought the whole family of 2012 Civics to the party at this year's New York Auto Show. We've gotten to feast our eyes on the coupe, sedan, Si, hybrid and natural gas-drinking GX. That's a lot of new sheetmetal to look at, so we decided to pack them all in one post to make it easy on you.

The 2012 Civic coupe, sedan and GX are all powered by a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine that produces 140 horsepower. In uber-efficient HF guise, the same engines is capable of returning 41 miles per gallon fuel economy on the highway. The standard coupe and sedan are nearly as frugal at 39 mpg on the highway. We'll have a separate report on the new Civic Hybrid soon, but in the meantime know that it will be rated at 44 mpg combined, an improvement of 4 mpg over last year's model.

Were it our money on the line, however, we'd trade a few miles per gallon for a bit more driving excitement. The 2012 Honda Civic Si would be our choice, with its new 200-horsepower/170 pound-feet of torque 2.4-liter four-cylinder. Still, this is a compact Honda and, when paired with the six-speed manual gearbox, the Civic Si achieves 31 miles per gallon on the highway.

You can check out all of the new Civics in the galleries below. After that, take a dive into Honda's official press release after the jump.
Regardless of her stance on baked goods, Marie Antoinette didn't quite grasp the severity of country's condition until the French Revolution was in full swing and her husband was conspicuously absent of his head. Just as General Armstrong Custer dismissed the might of the Northern Cheyenne and Captain Edward John Smith failed to accurately read the waters of the North Atlantic, human history is filled to the brim with figures who didn't discover the danger they were in until it was much too late.

When Honda unveiled the 2012 Civic at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, many critics were quick to put Honda in the same illustrious company. With an army of all-new compacts from automakers like Ford, Chevrolet and Hyundai all set to kick down the Honda gates, fans were thirsty to see a vehicle that was as innovative in design as it was in engineering. Instead, the Japanese manufacturer unveiled a compact car that looked startlingly similar to its eighth-generation predecessor.

We shouldn't have been surprised. Since the Civic first hit the market 38 years ago, Honda has stuck to a tried-and-true update regimen for its star model. Every other generation has delivered a mild revision of the preceding design, and the ninth take on the vehicle is no different. With a tweaked body, slightly adjusted interior and nudges to the suspension and drivetrain, the 2012 Civic is effectively generation 8.1, but that just might be enough to keep the hordes at bay and Honda out of history's dog house.

Typically, most automakers stick to a relatively strict five-year product cycle for their highest-selling, most important products. The Honda Civic, for example, debuted in September of 2005, so realistically, a new model should be just around the corner, right? Not exactly.

In an interview with AutoWeek, American Honda executive vice president John Mendel said that changing market conditions and tougher fuel economy and emissions regulations have strongly affected the development of the next-generation Civic, meaning that the new model won't come until sometime in 2011. AW also reports that the Civic's redesign has been altered along the way - the new model was supposed to be larger than the current model, but now it has been redesigned to be closer in size to the current one (pictured above).

What's more, with hot new products like the 2012 Ford Focus on deck, Honda will certainly have to up the ante on the Civic's level of equipment, style and refinement. The Civic is still one of the world's best-selling cars: about one million are moved each year. And with the U.S. accounting for approximately one-third of those sales, Honda would be wise to ensure that the next-generation Civic will be attractive enough to keep it in the top tier of high-selling vehicles in the States.
Lest you coupe fans feel left out, we've finally found information on Honda's newish two-door in DX, LX, EX/EX-L and Si levels from a PDF brochure and the brand's U.S. website. As with the sedan, the front and rear of the Civic Coupe see the most change, though it'll take a trained eye to spot the differences out back. The front grille, though, looks more aggressive and sports a new honeycomb pattern, and the lower bumper has been redesigned with new air intakes. We likey. Also of note are the new clear turn signal lenses. On the inside, the available navigation system flips down to reveal a slot-loading CD player and inputs for digital audio cards, whatever those are. There's also a new USB music interface in the center console so you can just plug a flash drive full of tunes into the dash. A 140-hp, 1.8-Liter i-VTEC(R) engine powers the standard coupe and offers up to 36 highway mpg. Honda hasn't released any of this information through its media website, and the consumer website still isn't showing any 2009 Si models, so expect the big H to release more information on its '09 coupes in the coming weeks. In the meantime, take a look through our gallery below to chart all the changes. Thanks for the tip, Ricky!

Gallery: 2009 Honda Civic Coupe

[Source: Honda]
2009 Honda Civic Coupe revealed in brochure originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 29 Aug 2008 11:59:00 EST.
