When we heard Citroen was actually <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/10/citroen-plans-to-make-car-based-on-the-c-cactus/">going to make a production car</a> based on the concept we wrote "let's just hope they don't keep too much of the melted-candle look." Thankfully, they didn't.<br />
<br />
But what they did was squash the front end of the Citroen GT, add some Nissan-esque headlights and enough curvy shut lines to confuse a protractor, then topped it off with some Klingon forehead bulges running from hood to fenders. Then they gave it a tiny body and rested the package on little wheels. If nothing else, it is arresting.<br />
<br />
Touted as a city car, the C-Cactus -- about the size of a Sandero -- would offer three powerplants: a 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder gas engine with 90 hp; a 1.4-liter diesel hybrid; and an electric car. This car could also be the first in Citroen's Essentielle sub-brand of Eco cars which are, according to latest reports, due to roll out in 2012. <br />

<br />According to an unnamed "insider," Citroen is considering launching a separate brand just for eco-friendly vehicles. Earlier this year, the quirky French automaker announced a new high-end brand that would bring premium features to its existing vehicle platforms. Similarly, the first production vehicle under the green brand would echo the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/CCactusconcept/">C-Cactus concept</a> from the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/FrankfurtMotorShow/">Frankfurt Motor Show</a> in 2007 but be built atop the automaker's C4 platform.<br /><br />Expect some innovative uses of materials, as previewed on the C-Cactus project, along with a fuel-saving powertrain of some sort. Options include going fully electric, using a hybrid powertrain or using a small three-cylinder diesel engine that would put out less than 100 g/km of carbon emissions. Sounds great, but let's just hope they don't keep too much of the melted-candle look of the concept.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/citroen-c-cactus-concept/low/">Citroen C-Cactus Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/citroen-c-cactus-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/c_c-cactus_large_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/citroen-c-cactus-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/c_c-cactus_large_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/citroen-c-cactus-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/c-cactushi_001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/citroen-c-cactus-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/c-cactushi_002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/citroen-c-cactus-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/c-cactushi_003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://imotormag.net-genie.co.uk/news/217856/citroen_set_to_launch_separate_eco_brand.html">iMotor</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/13/citroen-to-launch-green-sub-brand/">Citroen to launch green sub-brand</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 13 Mar 2009 18:32:00 EST. <div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"><small>Click above for more images of the Citroen C-Cactus concept</small></span><br /></div>
<br />It may look more than a bit, um, quirky, but so did the iconic 2CV that the C-Cactus concept was meant to embody. Built to do more with less -- materials that is -- the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/09/03/frankfurt-preview-citroen-c-cactus-concept/">Citroen C-Cactus concept</a> that was shown last year at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/geneva-motor-show/">Geneva Motor Show</a> used innovative construction techniques to cut the number of components required to manufacture it in half and is what Citroen calls an essentialist vehicle. A production version would attempt to follow that same pattern and could be powered by a version of the French automaker's new HYmotion2 hybrid system, consisting of a 1.0-liter diesel coupled to an electric motor. The powertrain could return over 100 miles per gallon according to the automaker. Another possibility would be to go full electric with the goal of achieving a 100 mile range and a 70 mile per hour top speed. Just how much of the concept's radical look would be carried over remains to be seen, though being Citroen, we're sure it would be suitably radical no matter what.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/citroen-c-cactus-concept/low/">Citroen C-Cactus Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/citroen-c-cactus-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/c_c-cactus_large_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/citroen-c-cactus-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/c_c-cactus_large_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/citroen-c-cactus-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/c-cactushi_001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/citroen-c-cactus-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/c-cactushi_002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/citroen-c-cactus-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/c-cactushi_003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Citroen, <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/10/07/enter-the-rumormill-c-cactus-moving-to-production/">AutoblogGreen</a>]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/10/citroen-plans-to-make-car-based-on-the-c-cactus/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Citroen plans to make car based on the C-Cactus</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/10/citroen-plans-to-make-car-based-on-the-c-cactus/">Citroen plans to make car based on the C-Cactus</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 10 Oct 2008 07:58:00 EST. Like many of the automakers filling up the Messe in Frankfurt, Citro&euml;n is trying to set its focus on greener offerings. The C-Cactus concept does its best to conserve resources by employing a hybrid HDi diesel-electric powertrain, which should allow this misshapen hunk of design detritus to get over 70 MPG.<br /><br />If you're so inclined, there are plenty more details in our <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/09/03/frankfurt-preview-citroen-c-cactus-concept/">previous post</a> and the gallery below proves that just because something is ecological and economical, it's not always going to be pretty.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/citroen-c-cactus-concept/low/">Citroen C-Cactus Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/citroen-c-cactus-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/c_c-cactus_large_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/citroen-c-cactus-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/c_c-cactus_large_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/citroen-c-cactus-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/c-cactushi_001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/citroen-c-cactus-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/c-cactushi_002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/citroen-c-cactus-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/c-cactushi_003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/09/12/frankfurt-2007-a-mini-with-herpes-citroen-c-cactus-concept/">Frankfurt 2007: Citroën C-Cactus Concept live, unfortunately</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 12 Sep 2007 14:29:00 EST.
