Back on January 16 of 1994, our 1985 Pontiac Parisienne Safari decided to blow a hole its radiator at the corner of Roscoe and De Soto in the San Fernando Valley. We remember noticing the temp gauge peg itself all the way to the right just as steamy white smoke began erupting out of the hood, and rolled into a local Shell station right there on the corner. The mechanic on duty was so used to repairing GM B-body cooling issues that he did it while we waited. We bet he could have done this particular repair blindfolded. Then he started talking.

"They've known how to make a water engine for years," He explained between pulls from his cigarette and dunking the Pontiac's radiator into a water bath. "My friend I went to school with, he invented a car that gets 160 mpg twenty years ago. But he was working for GM and they hold the patent." Doing our bestest not to roll our eyes too terribly much, we asked why not just release the motor anyhow, and surely the money his friend makes will more than make up for the money he'd have to pay GM. "You don't get it," the mechanic said to me. "They'll kill him."

A little less than twelve hours later, at 4:31 am, the Northridge Earthquake struck. Epicenter? Blocks from the Shell station where not only did our Pontiac's radiator get patched but a certain Iranian mechanic almost spilled the beans about GM's super high-tech secret stuff. Could this been a warning from General Motors to the loose-lipped mechanic? Probably. And if you think General Motors has some advanced engineering they're cruelly keeping under wraps, just check out Chrysler's Turbo Encabulator. Modial interaction of magnito reluctance anyone? Full video after the jump. Thanks bunches for the tip, Justin!
A deal was reportedly reached between Democratic leaders and the White House that will supply around $15 billion in federal loans to the struggling U.S. auto industry. While General Motors, Ford and Chrysler asked for a combined maximum of $34 billion, the $15 billion is designed to ensure they stay alive until March when the issue will be readdressed with the input of a fresh Obama administration. GM and Chrysler reportedly need around $11 billion to survive the new year, while Ford has said it would only need government aid if one of the other two went under.

We're hearing that a deal was reached between Democrats and the Bush administration late Friday after top Dem. Nancy Pelosi gave in to the White House and its position that the money should come from $25 billion in loans previously approved to help the automakers retool for energy fuel efficient vehicles, rather than drawing the aid from the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Fund for struggling financial institutions. In return, Pelosi is seeking a guarantee that the money would be replenished in "a matter of weeks."

Both the Senate and House of Representatives have confirmed they will be meeting on Tuesday to vote on the deal, and it's expected that strong oversight of how the loans are used, whether in the form of an individual car czar or committee, will be part of the final package.

Party on, Detroit.

[Source: Reuters, Photo by Brendan Hoffman/Getty]
BREAKING: Automakers to get $15 billion in federal loans originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 05 Dec 2008 22:12:00 EST. Unfortunately for dealers under The Chrysler Group umbrella, their lots are teaming with '06 metal. The Detroit News quotes analyst John Casesa of Casesa Shapiro LLC as saying, "To have a third of your inventory in old models when you're two months into the (2007) model year, that's heavy." Heavy indeed, John.

Chrysler has put into effect two campaigns that it hopes will start clearing out the lots of last year's inventory. The first is aimed at the dealers themselves and involves about $500 million in dealer cash incentives to sell 2006 models. Dealers will earn an additional $2,500 to $7,000 for every 2006 model they sell. The easiest to sell models like the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 will earn dealers $2,500 unit per unit, while the tough sell trucks and SUVs like the Ram pickup and Durango will fetch a hard-earned $7,000 per unit. Consumers will be happy to know that on average Chrysler passes 85% of that money on to consumers.

In addition to lower transaction prices from the dealer cash Chrysler's shelling out, more than 3 million consumers are receiving coupons worth $1,000 that can be used towards the purchase of most 2006 and 2007 models. These coupons can be added on top of any existing incentive offers, as well. The only vehicles excluded are the 2007 Chrysler Sebring sedan; Dodge Viper sports car, Nitro, and Sprinter van; Jeep Wrangler, Patriot, and 2006/07 Grand Cherokee SRT-8.

The coupon mailing is the largest ever sent about Chrysler, and while the dealer cash is not being advertised to the public, you heard it here that these double discounts are in effect and now might be the best time to pick up that 300C you've had your eye on.

[Source: The Detroit News]
Chrysler offering millions to dealers and consumers to move 2006 inventory originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 04 Dec 2006 14:07:00 EST.
