There's still plenty of time until Transformers 4 hits the big screen, and Michael Bay & Co. are making sure there is plenty of suspense in the meantime. Which is good, because we're not really expecting any actual suspense from the flick. Not wanting to drown you with short posts as Bay's website slowly and steadily starts to run down the list of cars that will appear in the movie, we've held off until now to give you a quick update roundup.

Following the introduction of the new Optimus Prime, a Bugatti Veyron and a C7 Corvette last month, recent announcements include a "new" Bumblebee, a tactical vehicle named Hound and a Lamborghini Aventador. While the Aventador is sure to be an interesting addition to the cast of cars, Bumblebee looks to be trading in his fifth-gen Camaro digs for a highly modified first-gen Camaro shell. What does any of this mean for the next installment of Transformers? Very little, except for the fact that it looks like T4 won't be as much of a GM commercial as its predecessors and Michael Bay seems to be replacing the high budget of big-name actors with an equally high budget of exotic cars (plus Marky Mark).
Transformers 4 casts Lamborghini Aventador, Bumblebee gets a new, old Camaro originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 12 Jun 2013 10:58:00 EST.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is pondering whether to dramatically upscale a pair of airbag recalls on General Motors vehicles. The two existing campaigns, one launched in the fall of 2012 and the other in January of this year covered just 6,845 vehicles, but the government agency is considering whether to boost the recall to around 400,000 units.

The existing recalls involve the the closely related 2012 Buick Verano (shown) and Chevrolet Cruze sedans, along with Sonic and Camaro models. The root of the problem is a shorting bar in the inflator module of the steering-wheel-mounted airbag that may contact the primary state airbag terminal, a condition that could prevent deployment in an accident. Dealer technicians have been replacing the steering wheel airbag coils to fix the issue.

According to a post on NHTSA's website, the root cause, said to be a production issue, may not have been completely isolated - particularly for the second recall, which was for the Camaro. According to Automotive News, GM says it is cooperating with the government investigation, but won't say whether or not it knows the true origin of the problem.
NHTSA may greatly expand GM airbag recall originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Jun 2013 16:30:00 EST.
What's the best way to get the tires off the rims quickly? Not by running the thing at 200 miles per hour on the dyno and having them explode, we're quite sure. That's what happened to a twin-turbo F-body Chevrolet Camaro with 1,800 horsepower at the wheels as it was being prepped for the Texas Mile, when the drag radials decided they would rather die.

The dyno run actually took place two years ago, but according to YouTube poster "High Tech Corvette" it is only now being seen, and its explosive action has now gone viral. The car is owned by Kelly Bise and tuned by Late Model Racing, and when it ran in the 2012 Texas Mile, it was called the world's fastest Camaro in the standing mile. When it ran again this year, things didn't go so well Bise crashed during his run going more than 200 mph. He emerged without injury.

There are three videos below: the dyno video is first, followed by this year's crash, and then the 2012 run showing how things are meant to go.
Continue reading 200-mph Camaro dyno run is a blow out

200-mph Camaro dyno run is a blow out originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 31 May 2013 13:01:00 EST.
No, you didn't read our title wrong. This is a 2013 model year Trans Am, and yes, that is a Pontiac logo affixed to the front of the car. But don't bother dialing up your local General Motors dealership just yet. This is the new Hurst Edition Trans Am created by the Trans Am Depot located in Tallahassee, FL. Having spent a number of years restoring early Trans Am models, the crew at Trans Am Depot finally did what many Pontiac enthusiasts wish GM would have done - create a modern Trans Am using the fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro.

As the former owner of a 1977 model, I've been wanting to check out Trans Am Depot ever since I first saw the company have American Choppers build a trio of motorcycles inspired by its Pontiac remakes. So I jumped at the chance to head to Florida's capital city to visit the shop and drive its latest creation, the new Hurst Edition Trans Am. As a collaboration with Hurst, this car made its debut at the 2012 SEMA Show and then popped up again on our radar with a cheesy yet perfectly fitting video back in March.

Driving Notes

For this Quick Spin, I was in the black Hurst Edition SEMA car driving behind the gorgeous pearl white example seen here, and between their audacious styling and killer exhaust notes, people kept gawking at us - ok, the cars - as if we were the buxom, bikini-clad babe seen in the aforementioned video.

From a styling standpoint, this Trans Am is way more than just a body kit. Trans Am Depot has performed extensive changes to the Camaro's body to give it an appearance that closely resembles the 1977-78 Firebird, with unique front and rear fascias that include modern LED headlights and taillights, as well as era-appropriate down-turned quadruple exhaust outlets. Some of the minor alterations include detail work like adding front fender extractors, removing the Camaro's faux rear wheel vents and adding a little length to the tail section to give the Trans Am a flatter, more unique rear end. Hurst Edition cars are only offered in black, white and silver paint with the iconic shaker hood and Screaming Eagle, and the whole look is finished off with 20-inch, gold-accented honeycomb wheels.

As the hood scoop suggests, the Hurst Edition uses the same 6.2-liter V8 as the Camaro SS, and an optional supercharger boosted the power to 575 horsepower at the rear wheels on my test car. There is also a supercharger kit that delivers up to 720 hp, and if that still isn't enough, a twin-turbo kit is available offering 1,100 horses. With 575 hp, the Hurst Edition still has plenty of power to break the wheels lose even with StabiliTrak on, making me wonder how crazy the more powerful versions are. More impressive than the power from this V8 are the noises it makes. Under the hood, a muffled whine hints at the supercharger while the dual exhaust belts out an incredible note under full throttle.

Just like the extensive changes made to the car's styling, Trans Am Depot had done more than just dump a ton of extra power under the hood. A one-inch drop in the suspension helps tuck the staggered-width alloys into the wheel wells, while an Eibach sway bar upgrade should help give the heavy Camaro chassis a little more cornering bite. Sadly, I didn't have the chance to put the Hurst Edition T/A through any challenging handling exercises... it is Florida after all.

Inside, the Hurst Edition also gets an appropriately retro theme with repatterned seats, restyled instrument gauges and, naturally, a cue-ball short-throw Hurst shifter. The black-and-gold color scheme gives the cabin a classic look while carbon fiber accents on just about every surface adds modern panache with finishing touches like the billet sill plates and embroidered headrests.

My biggest disappointment about the interior - and perhaps the entire car itself - is a lack of the sparkly, machined-metallic-look gauge trim found on the dash of the late-'70s Firebirds. To me, this was as defining of an element as the Screaming Chicken for these old Pontiacs. What this car lacks in a single piece of '70s-era trim, though, it more than makes up for with its t-tops. Trans Am Depot used to farm out its T-tops, but has now since up with a proprietary design for improved style and function. GM, take note.

Now, turning your Camaro into a Trans Am is no cheap ordeal. If you have a donor fifth-gen Camaro and eight weeks to spare, Trans Am Depot will turn you out a base Hurst Edition starting at $29,985. This former SEMA queen came with some optional add-ons like the $10,550 supercharger kit and a stiff $7,500 for the t-tops.

While Trans Am Depot is limiting production of the Hurst Edition, it also offers the 7T7 model (on which the Hurst is based) with its '77 Trans Am styling, as well as the 6T9 built to look like the 1969 Trans Am and the 6T9 Goat styled after the 1969 GTO. And if, for some reason, you doubt just how much these guys love powerful Pontiacs, check out their daily drivers sitting out in front of the shop: a pair of rare Pontiac G8 GXP Firehawk sedans.

Recently discovered General Motors trademark applications for LT4, LT5, LT88 and LTX have observers wondering what kind of high-performance offerings could be on their way. A new LT4 would mark a return of the engine designation first used on the Corvette Grand Sport, SLP Pontiac Firehawk and SLP Chevrolet Camaro SS from 1996 and 1997. Supposition at Corvette Forum - which provided advance intel on the C7 like these leaked images - believes a new LT4 could go into the high-performance trim of the next-gen, 2015 Camaro that would be more powerful than the 580-horsepower Camaro ZL1.

Seeing an LT5 again would also be déjà vu - in its former life it was a 5.7-liter V8 for the C4 Corvette ZR-1 from 1990-1994 designed by Lotus, producing from 370 hp to 405 hp. A mix of rumor and hope is that the new LT5 will be a supercharged evolution of the 6.2-liter LT1 (pictured) placed in the new C7 Corvette, and that it will go into the C7 version of the ZR1 pumping out something like 700 hp.

The LTX trademark is, as with that last letter, a complete mystery. If the "X" isn't a generic way to denote the whole LT family, it's wondered if it LTX could refer to a crate motor offering like the LSX.
GM applies for LT5, LTX trademarks... are new small block variants coming? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 29 Apr 2013 17:29:00 EST.
The new 2014 Camaro Z/28 may have been Chevrolet's little attention getter during the 2013 New York Auto Show late last month, but we mustn't forget that the rest of the Camaro range also received some pretty substantial updates for the new model year. So for those of you who might not have had the chance to soak in all of the 2014 Camaro SS' goodness, Chevrolet has released this video, in which Camaro marketing manager John Fitzpatrick gives us a proper walkaround of the refreshed coupe.

Fitzpatrick says that with the update, Chevrolet wanted to better differentiate between the V6 and V8 models, as well as giving the RS package a little more flair. Here, he shows us a number of features on a red SS RS coupe, including things like the revised front fascia with functional foglamps and the newly designed rear deck with the RS' exclusive LED taillamps.

Yes, everyone's eyes are on the ludicrously excellent 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 at the 2013 New York Auto Show, but Chevy also unveiled the quietly updated 2014 Camaro SS as well. The coupe wears all of the styling tweaks we saw earlier in the week, including a functional hood vent to help reduce engine bay temperatures and aerodynamic lift. The new front fascia now wears a larger lower grille to improve engine cooling as well. Indoors, buyers can opt up to a new set of Recaro sports seats.

Chevrolet graced the 2014 Camaro SS with a 426-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 engine, and coupe buyers will be able to opt up to a the 1LE handling package for better on track performance. If all this sounds unimpressive, remember that the engineers at Chevy were busy working on the the Boss 302-killing Z/28.
Don't forget about the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Mar 2013 15:29:00 EST. Listen, we like <strike>Kelly Ripa</strike> Kristen Chenoweth (Kelly is apparently on vacation) and Michael Strahan as much as the next auto-obsessed blogging website... but to reveal the new 2014 Chevy Camaro on the talk show ahead of its official unveiling at the New York Auto Show strikes us as a rather strange choice. Regardless, that's what we're dealing with - the talk show hosts were the first people to pull the covers off the new Camaro, and you can see the results above.

Additionally, one lone low-res image was published on the talk show website, and we enlarged it, reduced noise and sharpened it as much as we could. The original low-res version can be seen in the image gallery, as can a single shot of the interior, which sadly doesn't appear to have gotten any major attention.

We don't have any great views of the car from the screenshots that have hit the web, but from what we can tell, the changes made to the Camaro for 2014 are more noticeable than we had initially thought. For instance, the front fascia is completely new, with a grille insert that looks more condensed than before. The old mail-slot opening in the center of the face has been removed on the SS model, which is an update we're okay with but is likely to be controversial.

The biggest change to the SS model is a new hood with what appears to be a functional heat extractor. The bright red Camaro seen on the talk show doesn't have any stripes, and we're curious to see how Chevy deals with these classic additions on SS models with this new hood. Out back, we note a new rear spoiler along with taillamps that lose some of the past model's retro vibe in favor of a more modern, though still squared-off, look.

According to the show's website, the 2014 Camaro's powertrain options will carry over from 2013, with a 323-horsepower V6 and a 426-hp V8, along with the 580-horse supercharged ZL1. We suggest you take a gander at the image gallery above to form an initial opinion, but we'd also stress that many more high quality images will be coming from our crew in New York before too long.
2014 Chevy Camaro revealed... on a daytime talk show? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 26 Mar 2013 13:00:00 EST.
There sure has been plenty of drag racing machinery to report about lately from the Chevrolet COPO Camaro to the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet, but General Motors has another quarter-mile racer up its sleeve with a new rolling chassis version of the Camaro. While the COPO is a turn-key racecar with a price tag pushing six figures, Chevrolet announced that it is also going to start offering a factory-built Camaro drag car similar to the COPO but stripped of most of the drivetrain components.

With a starting price of $55,000, the Camaro rolling chassis (click above to enlarge) will feature a complete body, race-ready interior including a rollcage, a solid rear axle (without the gearing), racing wheels and Hoosier drag tires, and it will be built at the same Detroit area facility where the COPO Camaro is assembled using mostly production parts. The owner will need to provide an engine (and wiring harness), transmission, driveshaft and rear differential gears (the "third member"), which is all available through the Chevrolet Racing parts catalog.

Chevy will build a limited number of the Camaro rolling chassis, but it isn't clear if production will be as limited as the COPO Camaro's 69-unit run. Scroll down for the official press release.
Continue reading Chevy offering Camaro rolling chassis for drag racers

Chevy offering Camaro rolling chassis for drag racers originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 26 Mar 2013 09:29:00 EST.
Seeing a Chevrolet Camaro setting the pace at a NASCAR or Indy race is not uncommon, but its latest tour of duty has taken GM's modern ponycar to another form of racing altogether: the World Touring Car Championship.

The WTCC pits race-prepped sedan and hatchback touring cars against each other on tracks across Europe and around the world. Considering that the factory-backed Chevrolet Cruze has emerged over the past couple of seasons as the car to beat in WTCC competition, perhaps its only fitting that another Chevy act as safety car.

The Safety Ca(r)maro, as it's been dubbed, appears pretty much bone stock, though we'd assume it has had the necessary safety gear fitted, like a roll cage, five-point harness and fire supression system. But as it stands, its 430-horsepower V8 is about 40% more powerful than the restricted engines in the touring cars it's keeping at bay. Scroll on down for the full press release and video clip.
Continue reading Chevrolet Camaro tours overseas as new safety car for World Touring Car Championship [w/video]

Chevrolet Camaro tours overseas as new safety car for World Touring Car Championship [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 16 Jun 2012 20:01:00 EST.
The suspensions are lowered, the dubs are mounted and the votes are tabulated: with the SEMA show in full swing, organizers have announced their top pics for the show.

Rather than name the top tuned cars, the SEMA Awards name the best cars for tuning, in several categories. And so, the winners of the second annual SEMA Awards are...

The hottest car overall is awarded to the Chevrolet Camaro (like the Hot Wheels concept pictured above), the hottest sport-compact is the Fiat 500, the hottest SUV goes to the Jeep Wrangler, and the hottest truck has been named as the Ford F-Series.

All the award recipients are domestics, save for the Fiat 500, and even that is effectively a Chrysler product made in Mexico. So there you have it, ladies and gentlemen. Now crack open your aftermarket parts catalogs and have at 'em.
Winners of second annual SEMA Awards announced originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 04 Nov 2011 09:45:00 EST.
Back in April, Ron Adamwicz's electric 1981 Chevrolet Camaro ripped down the quarter-mile track at Palm Beach International Raceway in just 11.253 seconds. In addition to its record-setting quarter-mile run, the electrified Camaro, dubbed "Warp Factor II," set a world record with a 6.8-second eighth-mile run at 93.43 miles per hour. And get this: those records were set with just one of the Camaro's two electric motors operational.

On August 6, with both electric motors functioning correctly, the Team Haiyin EV Racing Chevy Camaro tore down the strip at Lebanon Valley Dragway in 10.08 seconds, hitting a top speed of 127 mph. That time puts the electric Camaro within spitting distance of the Black Current, the converted Volkswagen Beetle that holds the world record for "street bodied" electric vehicles.

The time to beat stands at 9.51 seconds. That's simply amazing considering the 1,001-horsepower Bugatii Veyron roars down the quarter-mile in the mid-10s. Hit the jump to watch the electric Camaro rip down the tarmac.
Continue reading Electric Chevy Camaro tears down the 1/4-mile in 10.08 seconds

Electric Chevy Camaro tears down the 1/4-mile in 10.08 seconds originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 15 Aug 2011 16:59:00 EST.
You think there were a lot of special editions of the Bugatti Veyron? The Europeans ain't got nothin' on muscle cars when it comes to low-volume derivatives. And for its part, Chevrolet doesn't plan on stopping anytime soon. Just the opposite, in fact... at least, that is, according to the latest reports.

Word has it that Chevy is planning on rolling out a new special edition Camaro every six months for - hold on while we take out our trusty old Autoblog abacus - two each year! The new ZL1 that debuted in Chicago is said to be the first in a long line that is expected to be followed by a new Transformers edition for the upcoming sequel Dark of the Moon. After that we should see run of 500 replicas of the Camaro SS Convertible that's set to pace the Indianapolis 500, and then a limited-edition Camaro Synergy that'll offer buyers a V6 with all the performance bits you'd expect from the V8.

If the reports prove accurate, that ought to take us through the end of next year. Beyond that, Chevrolet reportedly plans on tapping in to other historic Camaro variants for future specials. Have a thought or two on the subject? Tell us what special Camaro you'd like to see next - you never know who might be listening.

Now that the Ford Mustang V6 achieves 30 miles per gallon on the highway, General Motors is apparently looking to up its game by offering a more efficient version of its Camaro ponycar. Reportedly given the 2LS trim designation, this new Camaro will be available for order through dealers starting at the end of this month, and its 3.6-liter direct-injected V6 reportedly hits the magic 30 mpg highway figure.

If GMInsideNews has it right, the Camaro 2LS will only be available with The General's six-speed automatic transmission, and will be fitted with a rear spoiler, 18-inch steel wheels and a 2.92 rear axle ratio. The website also reports that the Camaro 2LS will still wear a 2011 model year badge, and that pricing is expected to be set around $24,700, including destination charges.
General Motors has big plans for the upcoming Chicago Auto Show. At the exposition opening this week, GM will unveil a pair of new vehicles, although details on what form they'll take remain scarce.

The news comes from reports quoting GM's North American president Mark Reuss. All he's revealed at this point is that one of the two cars will be based on the Chevrolet Camaro's platform. That tells us it will be a front-engine/rear-drive vehicle, but little else. So, commence speculation: Camaro Z28? Chevy Zeta-platform sedan? (Which we think should be called Chevelle, because hey, if Dodge can call its sedan Charger...)

As for the second car slated for the Windy City salon, your guess is as good as ours. So we'll just have to sit tight and see what the General has got in store for us.
Proving that SEMA is more than just loud stereos and long buffet lines, we wanted to share with you our first in-person shots of the Hurst Redline Series Chevrolet Camaro. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of BFGoodrich's Radial T/A tire, Hurst has supplied each example of this limited-edition car with Spec Redline Edition Radial T/As. Under the hood, the Redline Series Camaro utilizes a 3.6-liter V6 engine but Hurst has added forced induction to the powertrain and as a result, power has risen to 360 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. A turbocharger from STS is remotely mounted towards the rear of the car. The Camaro gains 50-percent more rear-wheel horsepower and torque over the standard V6, yet it still delivers 30 percent better fuel economy than the SS V8.

Sticking to the company's common theme of Hurst-centric styling touches inside and out, the car wears a black and white paint scheme that is offset with red pinstriping, large Hurst emblems on the front fenders, a ducktail spoiler off the rear of the car, badging on the exterior and interior and features the familiar pistol-grip shifter in the cabin.

The Hurst Redline Series Camaro is going to be limited to just 50 examples annually. Pricing is expected to fall in the mid-$50,000 range.
Earlier this week, we told you about the 2011 Camaros that Chevrolet was bringing to SEMA, and now it's time to see them up close and personal. Four Camaros are hanging out in Las Vegas this week, and each one provides a very different point of view on Chevy's pony car.

The Red Flash Show Camaro is a look-at-me V8-powered coupe that will certainly grab your attention out on the road thanks to its modified intake and exhaust system. On the other end of the spectrum is the XM/Accessory Appearance Package V6 Camaro that goes for a more subtle, not-so-flashy styling upgrade. The Synergy Series Camaro is the second version of a once-per-year limited-edition, and it features interior and exterior colors not available on any other model in the Camaro range. Finally, the SSX Track Car Concept rumbles on to the SEMA floor to tease us with the idea of a purpose-built track-day machine. Hop the jump to read more about each iteration, and be sure to check them out in our gallery below.
Neither did we. Vilnus owns a company that designs vehicle interiors, and as the first Bulgarian with a 2010 Chevy Camaro - a V6 manual - he decided he needed to do something special with it.

Vilner has focused his efforts inside, slathering just about everything in Nubuck and Nappa, with accent lighting and hints of chrome here and there, like the filigreed door handle. He didn't leave the outside completely alone, swapping the front brakes for eight-piston units and switching LEDs for the halogens. It won't be to everyone's taste, but it's ain't half bad and the workmanship appears to be top notch. It's also got one of the best intros to a press release we've read in a while. You'll find that after the jump, and a gallery of high-res photos below.
Drop Top Customs, an aftermarket customizer which typically creates convertibles, has created a T-Top kit for the Chevrolet Camaro. The Drop Top T-Top Camaro will make its debut at SEMA show this November and the company says most of its creations will come equipped with a supercharger, but Drop Top assures us that chassis flex isn't an issue. Sales begin shortly after its debut in Vegas next month and carry a sticker of $6,500.

You know how they say some movies are cursed? It seems that may just be the case for the folks working on Transformers 3. The movie has had its share of crashes, with a few of them being of the "unplanned" variety. The latest incident takes place in Washington D.C. and involves a certain yellow Camaro that Transformers fans know better as Bumblebee.

As a scene was being filmed, a real police vehicle was responding to a call and cut quickly across the set. The two cars collided and the police officer driving the SUV was taken to a nearby hospital, but it appears there are no serious injuries - except to the Camaro, which was covered up and taken away.

Earlier this year, production came to a screeching halt when Gabrielo Cedillo had to be rushed to the hospital. Cedillo, an extra, was driving a car when a cable from a camera vehicle broke loose, smashed through her windshield and hit her in the head. She underwent emergency surgery but her stint in the ICU is up, and her condition is improving.

A trio of videos of this latest accident can be seen after the jump. Thanks for the tip, Mark!
