According to General Motors, the Lone Star State is responsible for one sixth of all truck sales in the United States, and to draw even more buyers to its showrooms, the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado is being offered in a special Texas Edition package. For buyers not in Texas, though, a similar package called Custom Sport will be offered at the same price premium - $2,165 for LT and $1,895 for LTZ models.

Both packages add 20-inch wheels, a locking rear differential and the Trailering Equipment package, and while the LT trim levels will get body colored mirrors and door handles, the LTZ models will get a whole smattering of chrome, along with a Bose audio system. The Texas Edition will get unique badges to differentiate it from the Custom Sport models. Scroll down for more information on these new packages, and check out our galleries of the 2014 Silverado and the more luxurious Silverado High Country.
Continue reading 2014 Chevy Silverado gets Texas Edition package

2014 Chevy Silverado gets Texas Edition package originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 08 May 2013 13:30:00 EST.
Spy photographers have spotted the new Chevrolet Silverado High Country and GMC Sierra Denali out on public streets for a little testing. From the looks of things, the Silverado will receive a much-differentiated front fascia along with special badges and those honking 20-inch chrome wheels. Expect to find a more posh interior as well. Likewise, the Sierra Denali will wear a tweaked nose with the familiar Denali bling. The one of the GMC trucks spotted here rolls on 21-inch gunmetal wheels instead of the 20-inch chrome pieces of the High Country.

Word has it both trucks will go on sale after the Texas State Fair this summer. While General Motors hasn't said for certain what we can expect to find under the hood, we'd be surprised to see anything outside of the range of engines found in the standard Silverado and Sierra models. That means buyers should be able to get their hands on the efficient, 23-miles per gallon 5.3-liter V8.
2014 Chevy Silverado High Country spied wearing trappings of new luxury trim originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 03 Apr 2013 13:30:00 EST.
Chevrolet has thrown down the next hand in the pickup truck poker wars and revealed at least a couple of potential aces - depending on which numbers matter most to you. The 2014 2014 Silverado 1500 with its 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 gets <strike>335</strike> 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, is mated to a six-speed automatic, can tow 11,500 pounds with the optional Max Trailer Package and costs the same as the outgoing Silverado, $24,585 (*including $995 destination fee). Chevy says the Silverado also stands atop the fuel economy charts when comparing any competitor with a V8 engine - and some competitors with V6 engines. The two-wheel drive model returns 16 miles per gallon city, 23 mpg highway, 19 mpg combined in two-wheel drive guise and 16 mpg city, 22 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined as a four-wheel drive.

For context around those numbers, the most fuel efficient V8-powered 2013 Ford F-150 pickups lose about two mpg in every metric compared to the Silverado, the 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost returning 16 city, 18 highway and 22 combined in two-wheel drive. However, that EcoBoost does have 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. You can get a Ram 1500 with a 3.6-liter V6 that gets 25 mpg highway, but it has 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. The 2013 Ram with the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 and its 395 hp and 407 lb-ft drops one mpg in every category to the Silverado. Its tow rating is 200 pounds beyond its nearest competitor, the F-150 with the Max Trailer Tow Package.

Elsewhere, the new Silverado gets a quieter cab with a redesigned interior, a new bed with improved load-management possibilities, disc brakes all around, tweaked steering and suspension, along with free standard scheduled maintenance for two years or 24,000 miles.

It goes on sale later this year with pricing throughout the lineup held constant from the 2013. The Double Cab (which replaces the Extended Cab) will cost $28,610, the Crew Cab going for $32,710, prices inclusive of destination. Two more engines, 4.3-liter and 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8s, will join the range later on.

Also, if you prefer the slightly different styling of the 2014 GMC Sierra seen below, most of the same performance metrics apply, but pricing is a bit higher - $25,085 for the standard cab, $29,110 for the double cab, and $33,210 for the Crew cab model.

The press releases below have all the chest-thumping details on both models.
Continue reading 2014 Chevy Silverado priced from *$24,585, V8 gets better economy than Ford EcoBoost V6

2014 Chevy Silverado priced from *$24,585, V8 gets better economy than Ford EcoBoost V6 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Apr 2013 13:27:00 EST.
Automotive News reports that General Motors may slash production or ramp up discounts in order to deal with an oversupply of pickup trucks. GM currently has more than double the standard supply of pickups, and the vehicles are threatening to dampen the automaker's profits for 2013. Typically, automakers try to sustain a 60- to 75-day supply of vehicles, but GM is currently loaded with a 139-day supply, as of last month. At the end of November, the automaker was sitting on 245,853 units.

The manufacturer says that it will adjust production accordingly before laying any incentives on the profitable pickups. Even so, there's some concern that the inventory swell could hurt the roll-out of the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. GM actually began slowly stepping back production in August, but it's clear the company will take further action as it heads toward the end of the year and into the next. Analysts predict the automaker could reduce pickup manufacturing by nearly half in the first quarter of 2013.

That still may not be enough to keep GM from laying extra cash on the Silverado and GMC Sierra. While the company's incentive spending was down in November compared to the same month in 2011, both the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150 saw double-digit percentage increases in sales last month while the Silverado and Sierra numbers slid compared to a year prior. Incentive spending could help move more trucks and add some balance to the GM inventory surge.
GM profits threatened by glut of pickups originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Dec 2012 18:44:00 EST.
Owning and driving an older vehicle requires a certain amount of faith. You need to believe somewhere deep down inside of yourself that you're going to get where you're going without erupting into a ball of flame, getting run down by the Suburban-wielding soccer mom on her cell phone in the next lane or perishing from heat stroke. You also need to have faith that when you hit the key, your old car/truck/motorcycle will come to life, even if there's a precedent for the contrary. You also need to believe that humanity will help you out should the fates frown on you. Chevrolet seems to understand this, and this year, the company will campaign a handful of Rescue Squad Chevrolet Silverados at the Woodward Dream Cruise.

The truck will be packed with technicians from Matthew Hargreaves Chevrolet and Les Stanford Chevrolet who will help owners of any brand who need an assist with light repairs such as flat tires, dead batteries and the like. The Woodward Dream Cruise is set to kick off on August 18. Check out the press release below.
Continue reading Chevrolet using Service Squad Silverado for roadside repairs during Woodward Dream Cruise

Chevrolet using Service Squad Silverado for roadside repairs during Woodward Dream Cruise originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 18:32:00 EST.
Bob Lutz recently stopped by to see Jay Leno at the comedian's Big Dog Garage, and the legendary auto executive has brought along his latest project, an extended-range VTrux electric pickup by Via Motors. The creation combines a 4.3-liter V6 with an electric motor to offer around 50 miles of all-electric driving and a full range of 300 miles. When connected to a 220-volt outlet, the truck takes just four hours to fully charge. What's more, Lutz says Via Motors can install the same driveline in full-size General Motors vans as well as models like the Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe and, of course, the Cadillac Escalade.

Leno seems pretty taken with the final product, saying he can't tell a difference between the VTrux plug-in hybrid and a standard Silverado pickup, save for its quiet operation. Just like in the Chevrolet Volt, once the batteries go dead, the V6 under the hood takes over to turn a generator to provide power to charge the batteries of the electric motor once again. It sounds like a pretty neat setup, though there's always the looming question of cost - Via Motors estimates the price of a Silverado-based VTRUX at $79,000 - when built "in volume."
It's probably a toss-up as to what's worse about life at the top: the loneliness or the rocks that everyone throws at you. Chevrolet recently took aim at Ford with a humorous Super Bowl commercial that not only took the unusual step of calling Ford out by name, but made claims about the segment that Ford didn't find funny at all.

Ram is next up to lob a light-duty boulder with a commercial that says if you take one of its trucks and make it less capable, then you end up with a Ford. For what it's worth, such claims are, rather obviously, directed at specific trims with specific options and packages.

We imagine that eventually the sleeping giant, Ford, will awaken and respond. For now, you can find the provocation after the jump.
Continue reading New Ram ad joins Chevy in knocking Ford F-150

New Ram ad joins Chevy in knocking Ford F-150 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Feb 2012 13:29:00 EST.
General Motors took dead aim at the Ford F-150 during the Super Bowl by airing a spot for the Chevrolet Silverado. The ad featured a post-apocalyptic scene where only Silverado owners survived the end of the world and Ford customers were left to fade into the fossil record. Interestingly enough, however, the spot may not have had the intended effect of pushing more eyes toward GM products.

According to TheCarConnection.com, the ad may have benefited Ford more than Chevrolet. Kelley Blue Book keeps an eye on which vehicles visitors to the site are interested in, and Ford saw an immediate uptick directly after the GM commercial aired. Ford didn't have a big Super Bowl ad this year.

That wasn't all. Ford continued to see a swell in shopping in the days after the Super Bowl. Interest in the Silverado, meanwhile, rose slightly when the ad aired before leveling off during the remainder of the game and falling shortly thereafter. Interest in the F-150, meanwhile, continued to surge. According to TheCarConnection.com, the F-150 saw a greater boost in shoppers week over week while the Silverado fell off by 25 percent. Turns out Ford shouldn't have been so upset about the spot after all. Click past the jump to see the ad one more time.
Continue reading Silverado Super Bowl ad may have benefited Ford more than Chevy [w/video]

Silverado Super Bowl ad may have benefited Ford more than Chevy [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Feb 2012 11:01:00 EST.
Chevrolet is having some pointed fun with its apocalyptic Super Bowl ad featuring the Silverado called "2012," only the fun is pointed directly at Ford, which finds it a little too sharp to be all that much fun. So on the eve of the big game, Ford sent Chevy a cease-and-desist letter to pull the ad and "pressured" NBC not to run the commercial, according to a report on Yahoo!'s Motoramic blog. Chevy has released a statement in response, which you can read after the jump, indicating that the ad will run despite Ford's protest.

Ford found no reason to chuckle at some of the commercial's claims, "particularly around durability." One in particular comes from a character that says of their now-deceased, F-150-driving pal, "Dave didn't drive the longest-lasting most dependable truck on the road. Dave drove a Ford."

Ford spokesman Mike Levine says his company has more trucks with 250,000-plus miles on the road than any other brand, which would appear to contradict the small print that appears in the "2012" ad that reads, "Dependability based on longevity: 1981-2011 full-size pickup registrations." Ford says its lawyers will decide what to do (if anything) after the ad airs during tonight's game, but Chevy's legal minions must have vetted the spot closely well before time.

Or Ford could take Chevy marketing honcho Joel Ewanick up on his offer and bide its time. Said Ewanick, "We can wait until the world ends, and if we need to, we will apologize."
Continue reading Ford asks Chevrolet, then NBC, to pull Silverado Super Bowl ad

Ford asks Chevrolet, then NBC, to pull Silverado Super Bowl ad originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 05 Feb 2012 17:55:00 EST.
Pickup trucks and demolition are like the Reese's Cups in a Manly Man's diet: two great tastes that taste great together. John Watson Chevrolet in Utah whipped up its own treat when it needed to accelerate the deconstruction of its old building, grabbing four Silverado pickups of various specification to do the destructive honors.

Whether or not the trucks in question had help from a certain orange excavator lurking in the background is beside the point - pretend demolition can be just as much fun as the real thing. You can get a glimpse of the tire smoking action in the video after the jump.
Continue reading Utah Chevy dealer calls on new pickups to help remodel showroom

Utah Chevy dealer calls on new pickups to help remodel showroom originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jan 2012 19:31:00 EST.
Here we have the kind of sleeper that'll wake you up no time: a short-bed, four-wheel-drive Chevrolet Silverado with an LS9 from the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. With dyno numbers of 510 horsepower and 504 pound-feet of torque, there's a jump of at least 205 hp and 169 lb-ft over the most powerful factory engine you can get in that truck.

The result? Sound and fury, both of which you can get a taste of in the video after the jump.
Continue reading Corvette ZR1-powered Chevrolet Silverado has us feeling sleepy

Corvette ZR1-powered Chevrolet Silverado has us feeling sleepy originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 14 Jan 2012 16:03:00 EST.
The numbers are officially in for 2011, and once again, Ford, General Motors and Chrysler sold more pickup trucks than any other model. The Ford F-Series was the top-selling vehicle through November of last year with 516,639 units rolling off of dealer lots. That number handily trounces the Chevrolet Silverado in second place with 367,343 units sold. The Ford Escape and Ford Fusion fell into third and fourth places, respectively, leaving Ram Trucks to fill out the top five domestic automaker-built vehicles, with 218,750 units.

All told, GM took five spots on the list while Ford walked away with four. Chrysler only managed to crack the top 10 with its Ram offerings. Overall, American automakers sold over 1 million pickup trucks last year, proving that in the land of (still) cheap fuel, The pickup truck remains king. Hit the jump for the complete top 10 list, complete with sales figures through November.
Continue reading These are Detroit automakers' top-selling vehicles of 2011

These are Detroit automakers' top-selling vehicles of 2011 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 03 Jan 2012 13:15:00 EST.
Four of General Motors' full-size truck plants, three of them in the U.S., will go intermittently silent for a total of 21 weeks in order to retool for 2013 model year production. The Fort Wayne, Indiana and Flint, Michigan plants have both been in the news lately as recipients of multi-million dollar investments for just this purpose.

Fort Wayne will shut down for nine weeks over the course of 10 months, from January to October of 2012, while Flint will stop production for seven weeks from June to November, and the Arlington, Texas facility will be quiet from June to December for five weeks. The Mexico plant in Silao will find out its shut-down schedule next year. GM has been stockpiling a 90-day supply of its Silverado and Sierra pickups to make up for the loss of production.

When the 2013 models arrive, unconfirmed reports indicate we can expect a new forced-induction V6, the continuation of the 5.3- and 6.0-liter V8s, and the 6.2-liter V8 going into the heavy-duty versions exclusively.
GM schedules 21-week idle of three truck plants originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Dec 2011 16:32:00 EST.
If you'd like a little less SEMA-fication with your SEMA, then the understated Silverado Realtree Concept might suit. Developed with Realtree outdoor outfitters, with whom Chevrolet has had a seven-year relationship, the concept is based on the 2500 Crew Cab and aims to be "the ultimate hunting pickup."

Powered by a Duramax diesel with a whopping 765 pound-feet of torque churning those 35-inch tires, we're thinking this thing can drag home whatever animal the crew of sportsmen inside can bag. Speaking of inside, the cabin completes the outdoorsy theme with dark cocoa leather seats bearing camouflage piping and blaze orange stitching.

There's a teaser video and press release after the jump, and the real thing is just around the corner at SEMA.
Continue reading Chevy Silverado Realtree concept bound for SEMA [w/video]

Chevy Silverado Realtree concept bound for SEMA [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 27 Oct 2011 15:31:00 EST.
In an effort to show off just how dominant its engines are in the 2011 F-150, Ford has put together a head-to-head comparison site showing how the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, 3.7-liter V6, 5.0-liter V8 and 6.2-liter V8 stack up against the competition. Start by selecting work or play, and then drag the slider to reflect how much you normally tow or haul.

Surprisingly, you're in EcoBoost V6 territory all the way to 1,900 pounds of hauling and 6,000 pounds of towing. The 3.7-liter still pumps out an impressive 302 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, and coupled with a claimed 23 mpg highway, things are looking pretty good. According to Ford, the V8 in the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado puts down 315 horses and 338 lb-ft, but only gets 22 mpg.

Blow past the V6's capacities, though, and the F-150 can be armed with the 5.0-liter V8, which outdoes the Silverado 1500 across the board, and according to Ford, still gets very impressive gas mileage. Want to personalize your own comparison? Hit the link to check it out.
Ford F-150 powertrains go head-to-head originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Sep 2011 08:59:00 EST.
PickupTrucks.com asked five half-ton truck manufacturers to provide their best trucks for $30,000. The entries consisted of the 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500 Extended Cab, 2011 Ford F-150 Regular Cab, 2011 Nissan Titan King Cab, 2011 Ram 1500 Quad Cab and 2011 Toyota Tundra Double Cab, all of which were put through a variety of tests over four days in and around Detroit. Unlike a comparison that seeks model-feature parity, this one allowed for manufacturers to provide whatever they thought was best, which is how you get Ford supplying the only regular cab among the field.
After being run through load tests, brake tests, the drag strip, 0-to-60 and even an autocross run, the crown was given to the Ram 1500 Quad Cab. It didn't scorch its competition, but it was always near the top of the field, which gave it enough to take the glory. There's a video of the test after the jump, or head over to PickupTrucks.com to read the full piece.
Continue reading PickupTrucks.com names Ram 1500 best truck for $30K

PickupTrucks.com names Ram 1500 best truck for $30K originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 24 Sep 2011 12:01:00 EST. Hunting and fishing are activities that suit the full-size Silverado and Tahoe, and the soft-spoken ads help create the feeling that you're there with the guys and gals who enjoy these sports. The other team member on these excursions? Your Chevy truck.

We also enjoy the fact that these ads aren't working too hard to get in your face or cram a message down your throat. Hunting and fishing are generally relaxing activities spent in quiet environments, and tone of the spots mirrors that perfectly. We can almost feel the damp morning air, and hear nature waking up around us as we prepare for the day.
In fact, we're having trouble finding anything wrong with the spots besides the fact that the duck hunters place their decoys right next to a boat ramp.

Strategy: GM is going after a segment of the country that loves trucks and full-size SUVs. These ads air on The Outdoor Channel during a block of shows called Silverado Saturdays. Occasionally, the spots will also show up during other outdoor shows. The commercials show Chevrolet trucks being used in a manner that the viewer can relate to, and it's being done in a simple manner that manages to convey a subtly powerful message.

General Motors has quietly rolled out a mild refresh for the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado. Buyers who lay down the cash for the new pickup will enjoy a slightly reworked nose complete with a chrome mesh grille with a chrome surround on LS and LT trims, and two-wheel drive trucks will feature an aerodynamic front bumper without tow hooks. LTZ trim level pickups will boast a body-color surround, and 20-inch wheels are now available, as well. For 2012, every Silverado with the exception of the Hybrid will come standard with trailer sway control and hill-start assist for a little more functionality and safety.

GM is also throwing in a new optional hard-drive based navigation radio with updated graphics. We'll be interested to see how that new tech stacks up against the somewhat dated system in the 2011 model, though the new optional WiFi system will go a long way with those who use their truck as a mobile office. Unfortunately, it looks like the Silverado will continue on with its long-in-the-tooth interior for at least another year, though GM is offering a White Diamond equipment package on LT and LTZ trim trucks to class up the exterior.

The package includes tri-coat exterior paint, a smattering of chrome all over the exterior as well as Z60 high-performance suspension bits on LTZ trims. Those big 20-inch rollers are also part of the party. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading 2012 Chevrolet Silverado gets slight redesign, WiFi and White Diamond Edition

2012 Chevrolet Silverado gets slight redesign, WiFi and White Diamond Edition originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 29 Aug 2011 14:29:00 EST.
