Of the three "Top Gear" hosts, Richard Hammond may be the most sympathetic towards American tastes. He's made no secret of his love for American machinery, including our big-boned muscle cars and pickup trucks. Hammond even spent some time filming in our neck of the woods while working on his new show, "Crash Course." The series puts Hammond behind the wheel of the largest machinery on the planet, and not surprisingly, the first episode focuses solely on the monstrosities of America.

Hammond sat down with GQ to discuss the project as well as some of his favorite vehicles from the States. While cars like the 1969 Dodge Charger and 1968 Ford Mustang GT are obvious picks, Hammond also seems to favor creations like the modern Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and the Jeep Wrangler. Head over to Wired to take a look at the full list for yourself. "Crash Course" airs Mondays at 10 on BBC America.
Richard Hammond picks 10 best American cars originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 05 May 2012 09:01:00 EST.
There are plenty of reasons to steer clear of a cruise. We typically shy away from the idea of cramming ourselves onto a vessel filled to capacity with overweight American tourists, all waiting to descend on some unsuspecting port of call like a scourge of consumerist locusts. Now, we have another reason to pass on the big boats.

WFTV discovered a parking lot owner in Cocoa, Florida was taking customer vehicles out for little joy rides. The news crew promptly set up a little sting by renting a red Chevrolet Corvette Convertible and installing a GPS tracker. The car wasn't on the lot for six hours before Jay Nieves, the owner of Premier Parking Spot hopped in.

The news crew filmed Nieves thrashing the car on a dirt road, parking it at his home overnight, doing sizeable burnouts on the street, transporting lumber and leaving the car with the top down and driver's door wide open for extended periods of time. All told, Nieves clocked 60 miles on what he thought was a customer's car before the news crew confronted him about the situation. Nieves promptly denied everything. Scroll down for the full newscast.
Continue reading Parking lot owner's joyride in customer's car caught on film

Parking lot owner's joyride in customer's car caught on film originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 01 May 2012 16:59:00 EST.
Some will invariably debate their authenticity, but as far as we're concerned, there's no arguing with the quickening of our pulse when we gaze at such examples of retrofitted classics as the Eagle E-Type Speedster or the Singer 911. But if you've been wondering why European sportscars have been getting all the old-meets-new attention, wonder no more, and feast your eyes on the Pogea Corvette.

German tuning house Pogea Racing - whose customized Abarth 500 we reported on back on 2010 - has taken an original '59 Corvette roadster and given it a thoroughly modern makeover. Starting with the chassis itself, Pogea went back to the drawing board and built a new tube frame to which it has mounted a new suspension, brakes and powertrain.

The latter comes courtesy of a modern 6.2-liter Corvette LS3 V8 engine, upgraded with new injectors, camshaft, intake and exhaust to drive 485 horsepower and 431 pound-feet of torque through a five-speed manual with ceramic clutch to a Dana 44 differential. Modern Corvette-sourced ventilated brakes with six-piston calipers up front and four-pots in the rear were fitted to keep the power in check, mounted behind 19-inch modular wheels on low-profile Bridgestone Potenza rubber.

Pogea also widened the track, fitted LED tail lights in the shape of the originals, and refurbished the interior with fresh leather and carpeting, Cobra buckets, Vallelunga wheel, Alpine stereo with sat-nav and upgraded electronics. The result is a stunning package that has all the charm of the original (minus, perhaps, the rear quarter vents...), but with a 3.9-second run to 62 and a 179 mph top end. Check it out in the high-res image gallery and press release after the jump.
Continue reading Pogea Corvette modernizes an American classic

Pogea Corvette modernizes an American classic originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Feb 2012 15:30:00 EST.
Autocross critics are quick to tell you that the pastime is a good way to learn bad habits behind the wheel. We say that, while it may be true, caning a vehicle around a parking lot while dodging a few cones is a good way to have a lot of fun behind the wheel in a fairly low-risk environment. Most autocross courses are designed to keep the speed down and the technicality up, which keeps both drivers and their vehicles safe from any real damage. Or at least, that's how its supposed to work.

A driver behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Corvette recently found out just what can go wrong when there isn't enough runoff around a cone slalom at a Speed Ventures autocross. According to YouTube, the driver had just returned from a break, meaning that both the track and the vehicle's tires were cold as he came into the esses. The vehicle's rear breaks lose in a slow, drawn out slide that culminates with the entire passenger side of the vehicle getting cozy with a nearby curb. It's gut-wrenching at best. Hit the jump to check out the carnage for yourself.
Continue reading Chevrolet Corvette redefines curb rash during autocross

Chevrolet Corvette redefines curb rash during autocross originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 Nov 2011 12:46:00 EST.
It's not every day that we get to feast our eyes on a new Corvette, and even if this isn't the much-anticipated C7, well, at least this one is in the here and now. This 2012 Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototype will race in the Grand-Am Road Racing Series next season, making its competitive debut at the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway on January 28.

"The 2012 Corvette Daytona Prototype was developed by a multifaceted effort involving Chevrolet, Corvette designers, Pratt & Miller and Grand-Am. Chevrolet also worked closely with chassis builders Riley, Coyote and Dallara," said Mark Kent, General Motors Racing Director, in a statement.

Four teams will run the Corvettes, the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Racing, No. 10 SunTrust Racing, No. 99 GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing, and the No. 5 and No. 9 Action Express Racing teams.
Here's a useful tip for all you would-be Chevrolet Corvette thieves out there: If you happen to find yourself in a Vette with the windows up and the doors locked when the battery goes dead, there's an actual mechanical release for the door mechanism squirreled away inside.

We won't tell you exactly where it is, because, well, that sort of takes the fun out of things. Just ask one would-be joyrider in Price George, British Columbia. The 21-year-old man saw a Corvette idling with the door open, hopped inside, rolled up the windows and locked the doors. What he didn't see was that the owner had just put away his battery charger.

When the thief stalled the car trying to back out of the driveway, he found himself in one very dead piece of American engineering with no way to escape (that he knew of). Despite his efforts to break the side glass with a hatchet and pry open the door with a screw driver, police arrived on the scene and were happy to help him out of the vehicle and into a cell after charging him with multiple theft and weapons offenses.
Corvette with dead battery traps would-be thief originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Oct 2011 11:31:00 EST.
Perhaps the manual transmission isn't as dead as a few Italian automakers would like you to believe. Porsche has declared that as long as there is demand it will continue to supply automobiles with do-it-yourself gearboxes, and the German automaker has outfitted its 2012 911 with a seven-speed manual gearbox. Now it seems General Motors is following suit, and the next-generation Chevrolet Corvette will reportedly offer up seven forward gears, as well.

Inside Line has reported that the 2014 Corvette is set to swap in an extra cog for increased fuel efficiency. As a bonus, this move will allow engineers to play with the lower gear ratios thus providing a bit more speed from the lower end.

Now that Porsche has made the leap to a seven-speed manual and Corvette is following suit, could a cackling, wild-eyed locked-in-the-basement transmission engineer be working on an eight-speed unit? We doubt it, but we're already doing heavy shoulder workouts just in case.
Next Corvette will sport seven-speed manual, too originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Sep 2011 11:28:00 EST.
Corvette savant Mike Yager is prepping his Effingham, Illinois-based Mid America Motorworks for a celebration of an American icon. On September 15, the doors to the 18th annual Corvette Funfest will open, and thousands of cars and people will descend upon the grassy destination. This is an important year for fans of the Bowtie brand because the automaker is about to celebrate its 100th birthday.

Another American icon has also reached a milestone this year. The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile turns 75 years old. Oddly enough, the Wienermobile shares a portion of General Motors history alongside the Corvette. Since 1969, the hot-dog-shaped vehicle has utilized a GM chassis, and the current Wienermobile is powered by a 6.0-liter Vortec V8 engine. The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile is also making the trek to Effingham to join in on the Funfest activities.

While it's certainly an odd pairing, the Wienermobile and hordes of Chevrolet Corvette cars and fans will mingle under the Illinois sky. According to organizers, registration for the 2011 event is already 40 percent greater than Mid America Motorworks experienced for the 2010 Funfest.

No matter what side of the great domestic manufacturer debate you find yourself on, there's no denying the simple beauty of the Chevrolet small block engine. Whether it be the early 256 cubic-inch forefather or the ubiquitous 350-cubic-inch that we all know and love, the 90-degree General Motors V8 has established itself as an integral part of the fabric of America. GM is set to build its 100 millionth small block this year, and Translogic decided to mark the occasion by spending some time with the vehicle that helped make the engine famous to begin with - the Chevrolet Corvette.

The episode also takes some time to chat with Jamie Meyer, the product integration manager with GM performance parts, to learn a thing or two about what has made the GM small block such a success over the years. Hit the jump to check out the episode for yourself and click over next week for a look at the face-melting Corvette ZR1. What a difference half a century makes.
Continue reading Translogic takes a look back at the Chevy small-block V8

Translogic takes a look back at the Chevy small-block V8 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Aug 2011 19:29:00 EST. The likelihood that you'll ever get your hands on an original Bill Thomas Cheetah is slim, to put it mildly. The iconic early 60s sports cars are rare as hen's teeth and priced accordingly. While the originals may be all but unattainable, replicas can be fairly readily had, though they still aren't what you'd call cheap.

This week, there are two Bill Thomas Cheetah Continuation models on eBay Motors, one a convertible and one in coupe form. Not originals and not really replicas, these cars are about as authentic as one can hope to get without winning the lottery. In the spirit of their original Corvette roots, both sport Chevrolet V8 power, rear-wheel drive and four-speed manual transmissions. The convertible, titled as a 1965, sports a 502-inch big-block Chevrolet mill, which only has 1,700 pounds of 4130-chromoly steel and fiberglass to push around. In case that weren't enough, the Cheetah's wheelbase is a scant 90 inches. Sounds good to us. Buy-It-Now on the red 'vert is a reasonable sounding $34,000.

The hardtop was built in 2008, but sports a 1964 title. It's a bit tamer, sporting a 383 stroker that the seller says is good for 350 horsepower. Not quite as hairy-chested, but more than enough to make you pretty uneasy. It also sports heat and noise insulation and a "period correct" air conditioner, apparently to compensate for the fixed windows. The frame is powder-coated, the headers are wrapped and the bodywork sports three coats of Mercedes silver. The price? How does $89k sound? Click the main image for a gallery of both cars.
eBay Finds of the Day: 1964 Bill Thomas Cheetah continuation cars man up originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Aug 2011 10:30:00 EST. The guys at DDR Motorsport have put their brand-new Miami GT kits on the market. The kits all sell for right around $20 grand, and can be set up to accept the four pot from either an Acura RSX or Toyota MR2 in Sport Prototype 4 form, or the LS Series small block from the Chevrolet Corvette in Sport Prototype 8 form. The idea, DDR says, is to put a truly affordable supercar on the market.

For your $20k, you get a full tube chassis, an unpainted fiberglass shell, lights, signals and all the glass. What you don't get is an engine or any running gear. Though they can't supply the drive trains, DDR will happily explain how to get your McLaren F1 lookalike up and running.
DDR launches McLaren F1-influenced Miami GT with Acura RSX or Chevy Corvette power originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 19 Jul 2011 16:29:00 EST.
Chevrolet Corvette sales haven't exactly been rocking the charts lately. Last year, the mighty sports car saw its sales drop to a 50-year low thanks to a stagnant chassis, global recession and the arrival of the Chevrolet Camaro. Despite all this, General Motors is set to hike the vehicle's price by anywhere from $480 to $1,150 depending on the model, according to Corvette Blogger. The site points out that the only Corvette in the armada to see a price decrease is the supercharged ZR1. Don't think you'll be getting a steal, though, the Blue Devil saw its price drop by just $75.

In addition, Corvette Blogger reports that the individual equipment packages have also gotten more expensive with the 2012 model. Models like the 2LT Coupe will see package prices increase from $1,195 to $2,095 while 3LT Coupe variants jump from $4,205 to $5,995. Step up to the 4LT trim level and you'll see an increase from $7,705 to $9,495. Things get more expensive for the Corvette Convertible, too. Head over to Corvette Blogger for the full rundown.
2012 Corvette gets across-the-board price increase originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 14 Jun 2011 11:28:00 EST.
We've seen plenty of coachbuilt Chevrolet Corvettes - both old and new - coming out of Italy. Now ze Germans apparently want to get in on the action, and this is the design with which they aim to do it.

Called SC-1, it's the product-in-the-making from Munich-based upstart Endora Cars. The design is decidedly neo-retro, blending styling elements from American and European cars of the '50s, '60s and early '70s with modern touches like LED foglights, taillights and a rear diffuser.

Like the Vette on which it's based, Endora plans on offering the SC-1 in three states of tune: with the base Corvette's 6.3-liter LS3 V8 with 437 horsepower, the Z06's 7.0-liter LS7 V8 with 512 hp and the ZR1's supercharged LS9 V8 with 647 hp. GM's six-speed manual transmission and active suspension are slated to be ported over as well, with a paddle-shift six-speed auto offered only on the base model.

Are sixth-generation Chevrolet Corvette coupes attempting to take out their owners? After one man recently became "trapped" inside his ZR1, another driver, captured above, also believed he was stuck inside his 'Vette. The real issue here, however, isn't folks being outsmarted by their cars; it's that vehicle owners don't even bother learning how their cars work.

When the battery dies on a C6 Corvette, the door-release buttons stop working. General Motors isn't in the business of creating sports cars that turn into traps, so it installs (very obviously marked) levers on the floor that, when pulled, manually open the doors. Not rocket science, guys. No need to panic. But hey, when you do freak out, and your friends are kind enough to find it hilarious and videotape it, well, we're happy to share.

There are plenty who feel about the Chevrolet Corvette, 'may you live long and prosper,' and General Motors is aiding that sentiment with a $131 million investment in the Bowling Green, Kentucky plant that builds the Chevrolet halo car. Apparently, though, the reason GM feels that way is because, in April, the state of Kentucky offered $7.5 million in tax incentives in order to hold on to production.

The investment begins this summer as the plant retools to produce the upgraded 2012 model line, and continues as it gears up to build the next-generation Corvette said to bow in 2013. Part of the funds will pay for 250 new workers to join the 400 that currently assemble the five different variants. GM's press release is after the jump with more information.
Continue reading GM investing $131 million in Corvette factory

GM investing $131 million in Corvette factory originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 May 2011 17:31:00 EST.
The Chevrolet C6 Corvette platform soldiers on for 2012, though buyers can now look forward to a few subtle changes compared to the 2011 model. The entire 2012 Chevrolet Corvette line now benefits from a slightly massaged interior that includes a new steering wheel and new seats. The thrones pack more supportive bolstering along the sides and microfiber inserts are also available for the first time as well. The reworked tiller features hide-wrapped spokes and what General Motors calls "streamlined" switch trim. Anyone who has spent time in a recent Corvette will know that these interior tweaks are much-needed improvements.

Otherwise, the base 2012 Chevrolet Corvette will remain remarkably untouched. Those who opt up to Z06 and ZR1 trims will find a few new changes, however. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Zero Pressure tires are now optional on both the heavy hitters, and the company's engineers say that the new rubber should be good for an eight-percent gain in lateral acceleration and that private testing at Virginia International Raceway delivered an improvement of three seconds per lap over the standard tire.

The Z06 also gets treated to optional gear like performance traction control, a full-width rear spoiler and a carbon fiber hood. The mighty ZR1, meanwhile, will utilize taller gearing in the fifth and sixth cogs to maximize fuel economy. Something tells us they might just help out on the top-end as well. Hit the jump for the full press blast as well as an introductory video.

General Motors may have been planned on keeping the changes to its 2012 Chevrolet Corvette close to the vest. In this Internet age, however, things often get out to the masses earlier than intended. There's nothing groundbreaking in store, but a few items are certainly noteworthy.

We've already heard about the upcoming Centennial Edition Corvette, but every bit as significant is word that GM is also going to offer high performance packages for the ZR1 and Z06. According to Corvette Blogger, the ZR1 High Performance Package features 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels, Michelin Cup tires and a close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox. The Ultimate High Performance Package for the Z06 goes a bit further with the upgrades. The 505-horsepower coupe gets Brembo carbon ceramic brakes, Michelin Cup rubber, lightweight black wheels and selective magnetic ride control. This group of options was offered on the 2011 Corvette Z06, but for 2012 it's joined by Performance Traction Management, a feature previously available only on the king-of-the-hill ZR1.

Other changes for 2012 include some exterior color swaps, wheel and tire packages and an upgraded Bose audio system. Head over to CorvetteBlogger.com for the full run-down. Thanks for the tip, Keith!
Chevrolet Corvette tow fail - Click above to watch the video after the jump

Remember the driver of that snowplow in Brooklyn that absolutely destroyed a parked Ford Explorer? Looks like he was fired by the City of New York, only to find gainful employment in Chicago. Either that, or he's got relatives working for the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Apparently the owner of this C5 Chevrolet Corvette managed to crash or disable it early on a Friday morning last month despite what appears to be favorable road conditions. That part we know little about. What we can see is what happened after.

In the video after the jump, you'll see a big-rig tow truck come to the Corvette's aid, but it ends up causing more damage than the original crash did in the first place. Apparently without a flatbed available, the tow truck driver tried several times to lift the Vette up by its rear axle using a claw, shredding the fiberglass bodywork in the process. But as if that weren't enough to put the "car" in carnage, the operator apparently didn't even get the claw hooked in properly. Compounding matters is that the Corvette may have had a damaged (or missing) right-front wheel. The end result is that the bodged Bowtie gets dragged down the highway sideways like a toddler pulling a stuffed animal around by its tail.

Last summer, there was some wild speculation that the next-generation Chevrolet Corvette could be produced at a plant other than the legendary Bowling Green, Kentucky facility that has built the iconic sports car since 1981. Not true, a General Motors spokesperson told us at the time, but a report from a Lexington, KY NBC affiliate may suggest otherwise.

The site reports that the bluegrass state has approved $7.5 million in tax incentives for a future $131 million expansion of the plant, presumably to accommodate the next-generation Corvette. That's just an offer, though, as local GM spokeswoman Andrea Hales told the affiliate that The General is considering other sites for the investment, and that the automaker has nothing to announce at this time.

Is GM giving us a hint that the C7 Corvette could be built elsewhere, or is the automaker simply holding out for more incentives from the state of Kentucky? We have no idea, but we wouldn't be surprised to learn that GM is doing its due diligence and shopping around. Corvette sales have been anemic the past couple of years, and it may not make sense to keep Bowling Green open if it's only building a vehicle that struggles to hit 1,000 sales in a given month. Top tip, Taylor!

Images of the Spada Codatronca Monza boutique sports car have leaked onto the internet ahead of its debut at this year's Top Marques Monaco show. The Codatronca, you'll recall, is a Chevrolet Corvette Z06-engined low-volume supercar cooked up by Ercole Spada. Spada cut his teeth working for Zagato, BMW, and IDEA Institute before starting his own company, Spadaconcept.

The Codatronca is the company's first attempt at a supercar and it uses an aluminum spaceframe and magnesium engine cradle coupled with the aforementioned Corvette engine. To make things just a tad more interesting, Spada adds twin superchargers to the already-potent 427, bringing the horsepower total to a heady 700.

As quoted by AllCarIndex, the Monza will have a scant 2,500-pound curb weight, meaning that Spada's creation ought to hit 60 mph in three seconds flat and top out at nearly 210 mph.
