Chevrolet handed over the keys to 33 Hot Wheels Camaro Convertible Indianapolis 500 festival cars this week. Race directors get the luxury of driving the droptops around Indianapolis in an ongoing tradition with roots all the way back to the 1960s. The stunt is supposed to remind area residents that the Indy 500 is right around the corner. The cars are our first look at the special Camaro Hot Wheels Edition in convertible form, and they are slated to head to dealers after a one-time production run. The cars also represent the first time in history full-size Hot Wheels have been offered for sale by an automaker.

The cars will be available in both the previously seen coupe bodystyle and this convertible configuration, and will feature metallic blue paint and special wheels with the iconic redline accent. Buyers will be able to choose between the V6-powered 2LT trim and the V8-powered 2SS guise.

Hot Wheels says the original Custom Camaro toy was one of the original 16 1:64-scale diecasts, and it remains one of the company's most valuable collector items today.
Hot Wheels Camaro to make big debut at Indy originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 05 Apr 2013 13:45:00 EST. Remember when there was a bit of consternation among the Bowtie faithful after Chevrolet introduced the Camaro ZL1? The issue wasn't around the big coupe's awesome performance, it was with the name - many wondered why the company hadn't chosen to exhume the company's legendary Z/28 moniker. There was a bit less of an outcry when Chevy showed off the 1LE model, but only just. Well, apparently there's a good reason why the Z/28 nameplate wasn't used - because they were saving it for this bad boy.

Powered by Chevrolet's 7.0-liter LS7 small block V8 (also found in the C6 Corvette), the 2014 Camaro Z/28 looks to offer massive track performance above and beyond the already capable 1LE. Chevy hasn't released official power ratings yet, saying only that the Z/28 will deliver "at least 500 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque" - the supercharged 6.2-liter LSA found in the ZL1 dispenses 580 horsepower, so the track-focused Z/28 probably won't be the most powerful Camaro on offer.

Perhaps more importantly, curb weight is down 300 pounds compared to the ZL1 thanks to a comprehensive lightweighting program, including thinner rear glass and lighter wheels and making air conditioning an option. Chevy says that the weight cut and the institution of substantial chassis and braking changes are good enough to cut a whopping three seconds per lap off of the ZL1's times, though it hasn't specified what circuit it has been tested on.

Aero changes include a whopper of a front splitter tied to a lift-curbing undertray, along with flared fenders and rocker extensions. Out back, a unique spoiler and diffuser help keep the massive meats planted to the ground at high speeds.

Inside, the manual-transmission-only Z/28 gets the ZL1's excellent flat-bottomed wheel and standard Recaro seats (already optional on SS and ZL1 models). The interior is finished in a matte-metallic finish dubbed Octane. Pricing has yet to be announced, but for all the details, scroll down to look at the lengthy official press release and to watch the car's live unveiling. We recommend fast-forwarding to the 8:55 mark to hear the Z/28 get fired up.
Continue reading 2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28 is back!
Full Disclosure: in my younger days, I loved nothing more than tormenting passengers with my behind-the-wheel hijinks. Once, after a particularly artful handbrake turn on a two-lane at around 50 miles per hour, I left one backseat occupant crying in their own lap. This isn't necessarily something to be proud of, but it gives you a glimpse into why it is that I find this ad from Pepsi so damn disappointing. The premise is beautiful. Take NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon, give him a disguise and set him loose upon some unsuspecting used car dealer. Hilarity ensues.

Except that this Pepsi Max commercial is so obviously staged, it can't help but feel like some ham-fisted marketing fail. From the strategically placed aftermarket cupholder mounted mid-dash for the hidden camera to the fact that the supposed dealer Camaro is displayed as a 2009 model (Hint: Chevrolet didn't make any), this clip is about as organic as a Twinkie. Still, we would never turn down a chance to watch Gordon thrash on a rental-spec coupe - only problem is, he probably didn't even do the driving himself. Check it out below.
Continue reading Watch NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon put one over on a used car dealer... sorta

Watch NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon put one over on a used car dealer... sorta originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Mar 2013 12:57:00 EST.
If by some miracle you find the fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro too modern for your tastes, Lingenfelter has a solution. Behold the company's new Retrokits packages; full aesthetic workovers designed to give the Chevrolet a few tweaks from the '69 RS playbook. Those include an entirely new front fascia, complete with a chin spoiler and the buyer's choice of either exposed headlamps or hidden RS-style units. Lingenfelter swapped the original wheels for pieces designed to invoke the rally pieces found on the original '69. From where we sit, we're not sure the look is an improvement, and the stick-on chrome dress-up for the rear quarter gills certainly don't do the machine any favors.

Camaro owners may buy the Retrokits package for installation by a local body shop or have Lingenfelter do the work in house. Prices start at $6,850, not including the man-hours to bolt the bits in place. Ask Lingenfelter to paint and install, and you'll be looking at a sticker of around $8,550. Zing. Mike Stielow is known for taking classic Chevy Camaro coupes and bending them into machines that not only kick ass in a straight line, but that can actually outhandle modern sports cars around a road course, too. His pro touring creations are nothing short of legendary, and as a suspension engineer for General Motors, if anyone knows how to wring more performance out of a Bowtie, it's Stielow.

His latest project, a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro lovingly dubbed "Red Devil," is the eleventh '69 he's built in the past 23 years. It boasts a 7.0-liter block from a Corvette Z06 topped with the heads, valvetrain and supercharger from the Corvette ZR1. An Eaton TVS blower shoves 12 psi into each combustion chamber, helping to generate 756 horsepower. The grunt is dumped to the rear wheels via Tremec six-speed.

Big numbers, but are they enough to help the Red Devil top its progeny, the Camaro ZL1? The guys at Hot Rod magazine decided to find out by pitting the cars against each other at Michigan's GingerMan Raceway. We won't spoil the results here, but we will say Stielow believes he laid down the quickest lap time at GingerMan for any new ZL1, even besting the efforts Automobile Magazine and their pro driver.
Seeing a Chevrolet Camaro setting the pace at a NASCAR or Indy race is not uncommon, but its latest tour of duty has taken GM's modern ponycar to another form of racing altogether: the World Touring Car Championship.

The WTCC pits race-prepped sedan and hatchback touring cars against each other on tracks across Europe and around the world. Considering that the factory-backed Chevrolet Cruze has emerged over the past couple of seasons as the car to beat in WTCC competition, perhaps its only fitting that another Chevy act as safety car.

The Safety Ca(r)maro, as it's been dubbed, appears pretty much bone stock, though we'd assume it has had the necessary safety gear fitted, like a roll cage, five-point harness and fire supression system. But as it stands, its 430-horsepower V8 is about 40% more powerful than the restricted engines in the touring cars it's keeping at bay. Scroll on down for the full press release and video clip.
Continue reading Chevrolet Camaro tours overseas as new safety car for World Touring Car Championship [w/video]

Chevrolet Camaro tours overseas as new safety car for World Touring Car Championship [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 16 Jun 2012 20:01:00 EST.
You've never seen a 1981 Yenko Camaro? Maybe that's because only 19 were made and they usually sell for well north of what a new Camaro will cost you from your local Chevrolet dealer.

One gorgeously restored, matching numbers example is up for purchase on eBay Motors for the eye-watering Buy-It-Now price of $180k. But please consider the car's claimed history and stat sheet before passing judgement.

As the legend goes, in 1969, Yenko Chevrolet of Murray, Pennsylvania took a 12-year break from modding Camaros. But low compression '80s engines got under the skin of Don Yenko, and in 1981, the tuning legend proceeded to cram a turbocharged, four-barrel, 350 V8 under the hood of the second-generation car. Horsepower on the rare Yenko is unclear, but it should definitely be way more than the stock Z-28's meager 175 hp. Reports suggest this was to be Yenko's final big build, and the owner of this eBay find says this one is the very last 1981 Yenko produced.

On top of all that, the Charlotte, North Carolina seller says that the car has fewer than 30k miles, some of which were supposedly put there by curious automotive journalists. The winning bidder will get the original build sheet, window sticker and a production intent letter signed by Don Yenko.
eBay Find of the Day: 1981 Chevrolet Camaro Yenko Turbo originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 Apr 2012 16:01:00 EST.
On the surface, drag racing seems so simple. Apply right foot liberally, keep the vehicle pointed down track and wait for a quarter mile to pass. Unfortunately, the real world is rarely so black and white. Pesky details like applied horsepower, traction and the fallibility of materials results in all manner of challenges. Just ask the driver of the '68 Chevrolet Camaro in the video after the jump. Shortly after launch, the high-horsepower machine sheds its left axle. With a massive racing slick under full thrust, the resulting carnage is, well, impressive.

The video is a pleasant rarity in the drag racing universe. Not only are we afforded a look at the ensuing drama from inside the cockpit, but a solid look at just how quickly a situation can turn hairy from outside as well. Check it out for yourself.
Continue reading When Axles Attack: Watch a Camaro drag car's rear axle snap

When Axles Attack: Watch a Camaro drag car's rear axle snap originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Apr 2012 12:44:00 EST.
General Motors struck back at the mighty Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 with the similarly brawny Camaro ZL1, and now it looks like GM has taken aim at the Mustang Boss 302 as well.

According to posts on the Camaro5.com forums, a dealer reference guide has revealed buyers will be able to opt for a new performance track package for the 2013 Camaro. The 1LE pack includes a number of aerodynamic tweaks, including an aggressive front splitter and unique rear spoiler, both painted in smoke gray. Red Brembo brake calipers, a hood wrapped in matte black vinyl and 20-inch wheels shod in Goodyear Eagle Supercar tires are all part of the party. Those big rollers are actually borrowed from the ZL1.

Larger sway bars front and rear as well as stronger axle half shafts help the vehicle withstand track abuse. A Tremec six-speed manual gearbox with a higher 3.91 final drive and a liquid cooling system is also standard. Finally, the report says the Camaro 1LE will feature an optional dual-mode exhaust similar to what's found on the Chevrolet Corvette.

Will the hardware be enough to help the Camaro fend off the road-race ready Boss 302? Given the sublime driving experience the tweaked Mustang offers its buyers and the heady 444 horsepower on hand, it seems unlikely. That doesn't mean we'd be averse to putting the two head to head on a track, however.

UPDATE: General Motors has now released official information on the 1LE. The model will land at under $40,000 and and be able to pull up to 1g on the skid pad. According to Al Oppenheiser, Camaro Chief Engineer, the vehicle was able to best the three-minute lap time at Virginia International Raceway, and GM is currently seeking approval from SCCA to allow the package to be used in the Touring Class competition.

In addition to borrowing the dual-mode exhaust from the ZL1, the 1LE will also feature the same variable-effort power steering. Other changes include a strut tower brace, ZL1 wheel bearings, toe links and shock mounts as well as a ZL1 high-capacity fuel pump and pickups for consistent fuel delivery during hard cornering. Even if the 1LE can't keep pace with the Boss 302, it should make for an impressive on-track machine. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Chevy Camaro to get Boss 302-rivaling 1LE trim for 2013 [UPDATE]

Chevy Camaro to get Boss 302-rivaling 1LE trim for 2013 [UPDATE] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Mar 2012 09:15:00 EST.
If you're as excited as we are by the 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1, it might be wise to understand the historical significance of those three letters at the end of Chevy's retrofied muscle car. Way back in 1969 - a year some consider to be the apogee of Camaro history - the automaker built just 69 ZL1s, each powered by an aluminum-block 427-cubic-inch V8 that was otherwise unavailable in the Camaro and built specifically for drag racing.

The '69 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is highly coveted by collectors, and a perfectly stunning example was auction at the 2012 Barrett-Jackson event in Scottsdale. Though this particular ZL1 saw plenty of use on the drag strip, it's been completely restored to like-new condition. We just drove the new 2012 ZL1 (full report coming soon), so we were keenly interested in seeing this one cross the auction block. The final bid came in at $410,000, putting the actual sale at $451,000.

Hans Reiter, the chap you might know from Reiter Engineering and its winning Lamborghini racecars, started a company called Sareni United for one purpose: to build a Chevrolet Camaro GT3 race car. The resulting silver shockwave is powered by a 7.9-liter Katech V8 rated at up to 650 horsepower and 627 pound-feet, and the racer's lead engineer says it has lap times "similar to the Lamborghini Gallardo" but that there is still a lot of work to do.

More importantly, the plan wasn't to simply make a race-worthy Camaro, the brief was to make one one that was cost efficient enough to lure new entrants into the racing game. Planned overhauls for the engine and gearbox are at 5,000 kilometers and other parts at 10,000 km.

The Camaro GT3 has been homologated by the FIA, Reiter says two cars are already planned for use in Germany's ADAC GT Masters series and that other inquiries have been made about GT4 and touring cars. It is priced at €195,000 + VAT ($253,056 U.S.).
Sareni United's Chevrolet Camaro GT turns pony car into thoroughbred originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 03 Jan 2012 11:29:00 EST.
The suspensions are lowered, the dubs are mounted and the votes are tabulated: with the SEMA show in full swing, organizers have announced their top pics for the show.

Rather than name the top tuned cars, the SEMA Awards name the best cars for tuning, in several categories. And so, the winners of the second annual SEMA Awards are...

The hottest car overall is awarded to the Chevrolet Camaro (like the Hot Wheels concept pictured above), the hottest sport-compact is the Fiat 500, the hottest SUV goes to the Jeep Wrangler, and the hottest truck has been named as the Ford F-Series.

All the award recipients are domestics, save for the Fiat 500, and even that is effectively a Chrysler product made in Mexico. So there you have it, ladies and gentlemen. Now crack open your aftermarket parts catalogs and have at 'em.
Winners of second annual SEMA Awards announced originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 04 Nov 2011 09:45:00 EST.
Remember the Sharpie Lamborghini Gallardo from 2007? A Chevrolet Camaro has been given a similar treatment courtesy of Maryland-based professional pinstriper Chris Dunlop. Stepping away from his cans of paint and fine brushes, Dunlop has created two magnificently detailed Sharpie tapestries where the original pinstripes would have been.

According to LSX TV, Dunlop says this Camaro is the fourth car he's decorated like this, and others have followed. Ten pens gave their lives to the cause of art, as well as a few layers of clearcoat to make sure the ink remains permanent. If you happen to think you could do this at home to your own ride, have a look at the detail shots in the gallery - a Sharpie isn't just a marker in Dunlop's hands.
Artist createst indelible Camaro graphics with Sharpie markers originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 17 Oct 2011 13:00:00 EST.
Word has it that General Motors may be out to finally counter the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet and Dodge Challenger Drag Pak. Until now, Ford and Dodge enjoyed nearly unhindered dominance of the turn-key dragster market, but LSXTV is reporting that GM is planning to unveil its answer at this year's SEMA show in November in the form of a Stock Eliminator Chevrolet Camaro. Details are markedly scarce at the moment, but that didn't stop LSXTV from hypothesizing about exactly what the quarter-mile Bowtie could bring to the table.

Chances are the Camaro will come with a serialized nameplate but won't be street-legal, and it will boast a track-specific suspension, brake and chassis package. Even so, as LSXTV points out, the Cobra Jet is feathery light compared to the big-bodied Camaro, so odds are the machine will need more horsepower to get it down the straight ahead of the Ford. That may mean a factory LS7 will be behind the headlights. Either way, we can't wait to see the machine in the flesh.
Chevy Camaro to get Ford Mustang Cobra Jet competitor? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Sep 2011 13:31:00 EST.
The Silver State Classic Challenge had a brush with tragedy on Sunday when two competitors lost their lives competing in the event. According to the Nye County Sherriff's Office, 53-year-old driver Richard DeKneef of California and his co-driver, 41-year-old Merille Hill of Ely, Nevada were both killed on Sunday when their Chevrolet Camaro blew a tire, rolled several times and caught fire. Both men were reportedly trapped inside the blaze.

The Silver State Classic Challenge is an open-road rally held across 90 miles of Route 318 in Nevada, where professional and amateur drivers alike can push their vehicles to the upper limits of speed in a sanctioned event.

DeKneef and Hill's deaths are the first fatalities at the event since 1992. Organizers have held the race every year since 1988. Our sympathies go out to the DeKneef and Hill families.
Camaro driver and navigator die in Silver State Classic crash originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Sep 2011 11:02:00 EST.
Chevrolet plans to do more with its NASCAR Camaro pace car than merely slow the field down. For the next two races at Atlanta Motor Speedway and Richmond International Raceway, a Camaro doused in pink to support breast cancer research will lead the field. As if the hue weren't enough, when the safety car comes out, Chevrolet will donate $200 per lap to the American Cancer Society.

The tie-in is part of the Bowtie's lead-up to Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October and its November 3 birthday. Not that we're hoping for any crashes during the next two Sprint Cup rounds, if they happen, at least they'll be more than just screeching spectacle. Follow the jump for the press release, and check out the pink muscle car in the high-res gallery below.
Continue reading Chevy fielding pink Camaro for safety, charity

Chevy fielding pink Camaro for safety, charity originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 04 Sep 2011 12:02:00 EST.
Penny auction sites like QuiBids or Beezid that advertise $18 iPads and $15 laptops sound too good to be true, and some simple math shows that the sites end up winning big in the end. That isn't always the case, though - at least not when it comes to pony cars. CNN reports that Jonathan Mason of Michigan purchased a brand-new Bumblebee yellow Chevrolet Camaro SS for only $5.28 using the site Fastpennycars.com.

Amazing, right? Well, before you trip over your mouse on the way to the site, keep in mind that each bid of one penny costs 80 actual cents, and there were a total of 528 bids. Mason's Camaro only cost him $5.28 plus the cost of any bids, but the site collected $422.40 in overall bids. That's a far cry from a $31,000 Camaro, but keep in mind that Fast Penny Cars is a newer site, without a big following like QuiBids. On QuiBids, an iPod Touch will sell for $10, or 1,000 bids at 60 cents each, which is quite a deal for the website. Well, that was the case until this story broke. Fastpennycars.com is now so backed up with traffic, we couldn't even get to the homepage.
Hit the jump to watch as CNN explains how a Camaro can be purchased for $5.28. Mr. Mason may have gotten the deal of a lifetime, but we're guessing the next guy won't be so lucky.
Continue reading CNN shows how man won Chevy Camaro on auction website for $5.28

CNN shows how man won Chevy Camaro on auction website for $5.28 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 14 Jul 2011 16:31:00 EST. 2012 Transformers Special Edition Camaro - Click above for high-res image gallery

The next installment in the Transformers franchise is set to hit theaters on Tuesday, June 28. Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon will continue the trend of providing a massive stage on which to showcase General Motors vehicles. One of those vehicles in the Michael Bay explosion-fest is a yellow Chevrolet Camaro that goes by the name Bumblebee, and the banana-and-black Autobot is set to spawn a special edition automobile that fans can put in their driveway.

It's called the 2012 Transformers Special Edition Camaro, and you can order one starting in July. If you do so, your Bumblebee decoy will arrive on dealer lots sometime this fall. The Transformers Camaro wears Autobot badges on the fenders, black stripes down the hood, roof and tail, a Bumblebee-specific rear spoiler and blacked-out 20-inch alloys sporting Autobot-logo center caps. Dealers will also be able to offer and install a ground-effects package and a set of 21-inch wheels so that customers can more closely mimic the on-screen Camaro.

The interior of the 2012 Transformers Special Edition Camaro also gets unique accents. Black leather surfaces are contrasted with yellow stitching, while Autobot logos can be seen on the headrests and center console lid.

Interested in picking one up? You'll have to start with either a 2LT or 2SS Camaro that's already wearing the RS appearance package. Tack on another $3,000, and you can drive like Shia Labeouf every day.
Continue reading 2012 Chevrolet Camaro Transformers Edition ready to hit the street

2012 Chevrolet Camaro Transformers Edition ready to hit the street originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Jun 2011 11:29:00 EST.
During the weekend's Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car race at Road America, Günter Shaldach radioed his crew to report what he called "a brake issue." Shortly after that, as Shaldach's CoolTV Chevrolet Camaro was hurtling toward turn one behind Joe Foster's Florida.com Mazda RX-8, he locked up at full tilt, and plowed into the Mazda. Then it got really ugly. Shaldach continued straight through the gravel trap and tire barriers, then flew over the course fence into the outside world.

Fellow team driver Oliver Gavin later said Shaldach had pushed the brake pedal and it went to the floor, then everything simply locked up. The airborne red blur in the pic above is Shaldach's leaping Camaro, the trail of dust on the right is the Mazda. Thankfully, Shaldach got out of the car and walked back up to the track on his own. Follow the jump to see video of the incident.
Continue reading Camaro leaves the premises in hairy Grand-Am crash at Road America

Camaro leaves the premises in hairy Grand-Am crash at Road America originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 26 Jun 2011 13:33:00 EST.
Chef Buddy Valastro has stepped up his cake game in a big way. Valastro stars in the TLC series "Cake Boss" and was recently approached to build a confection to celebrate both the Chevrolet Camaro and Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon. He wound up building a 2,000-pound cake sculpture that includes Bumblebee in both Autobot and Camaro forms. To pull it off, Valastro and his team had to partner up with special-effects gurus to create a special hydraulic system for the piece. As a result, Bumblebee's wings actuate up and down. The cake also features glowing eyes and fireworks.

The rest of the creation is made from vanilla pound cake and buttercream frosting. Valastro said that the cake was the biggest challenge of his career in more ways than one. The sculpture had to be crafted outside of the chef's bakery due to its height. Hit the jump to check out a video of his creation and the full press blast.
Continue reading Cake Boss builds 2,000-pound Bumblebee Camaro cake

Cake Boss builds 2,000-pound Bumblebee Camaro cake originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 25 Jun 2011 13:50:00 EST.
