Audi gets Cheap Trick to re-record Dream Green Police for Super Bowl ad, download it now for free

Audi's Green Police Super Bowl ad for clean diesel technology and the A3 TDI has gotten a bit of negative attention, but some parts of the campaign have gone unnoticed. For example, did you know that none other than Cheap Trick provided the soundtrack for the ad? They did, and the band even went back to the studio to re-record their hit Dream Police as, surprise, Green Police. Maybe this is why names like Eco Police or Enviro Police - names that wouldn't have caused any sort of uproar - were not chosen.

Audi of America's chief marketing officer, Scott Keogh, said in a statement that:

We have no doubt that viewers will walk away from the Super Bowl with that song playing in their heads. It is certain to make the environmental message behind the Green Police ad hard to forget.

For the third year in a row, Audi will be running an add during the Superbowl. First there was the Godfather parody where the "Old Luxury" dude was put on notice about the R8 (which is a sports car, but who cares). Then last year's really excellent Jason Statham spot called, "Chase." This year things are going to be a bit, well, more rocking.

Ditching the notion of parodying films, Audi is instead employing the talents of the ageless (though quite well aged) rockers in Cheap Trick to promote the A3 TDI. The ad will focus on the diesel A3 being named Green Car Journal's Car of the Year. In it, Cheap Trick will be reinterpreting one of their classics and the spot should sport a, "fun, tongue-in-cheek environmental theme." Any guesses as to which song? We're thinking "He's a Whore." SEMA 2008: Cheap Trick Dream Police Tactical Vehicle

The award-winning team at RealWheels Corporation put together another killer theme vehicle for this year's SEMA show. Starting off with a Chevy Avalanche, the team layered on some BASF paint and added a ProCharger blower, Corsa exhaust, Superlift suspension, GWG 20-inch wheels wrapped in Toyo tires, Katzkin leather interior, custom bodywork and grille, auxiliary lights and brush guards and a whole bunch of A/V equipment. Oh, and there's a guitar; drumsticks; fog machine; laser lighting; airbrushed graphics of Robin Zander, Rick Nielsen, Tom Petersson, and Bun E. Carlos; band vinyls and a Rockband video game, all to remind us that this is, after all, the Cheap Trick Dream Police Tactical Vehicle. Our absolute favorite touches include the checkerboard wheels and interior trim and those sweet sideview mirrors (look closely). This Budokan baddie is the ultimate reunion tour crowd control vehicle. We'll just call it That '70s Truck.

Spotted: 2007 GMC Acadia Cheap Trick Edition!

Alright, so it's just a bit of camouflage... but we're reasonably sure you can fit a five-necked guitar in GMC's upcoming Lambda-platform'd Acadia.

The photogs at KGP recently stumbled upon this tester, which reveals that the Acadia will look decidedly similar to the Saturn Outlook that debuted earlier this year at the Chicago Auto Show. That said, it looks as if the GMC will receive a more restrained front end treatment, and as The Car Connection points out, the side looks remarkably similar, save a more traditional d-pillar (the Saturn's is glassed-over). The rear appears to incorporate slightly more complex taillamps and a different bumper cap and exhaust, but from the spy shots, at least, critics are likely to suggest that it's hard to shake the notion that you're looking at a different vehicle. Ain't That a Shame. Regardless, those keeping The Flame alight among brand loyalists are unlikely to Walk Away, and should be rewarded with capable crossover with gobs of space and the promise of a smooth six-speed Hydra-Matic transmission.

(And yes... we're sorry about the whole Cheap Trick thing-- apparently we Can't Stop This Game)
