It was obvious that the car pictured was not a current Charger or a previous concept, so the natural conclusion is that it was an intentional teaser of an exciting new product.

Judging by this series of spy shots from Car and Driver, it would appear that some of the more radical styling elements previewed in Chrysler's presentation will make it to production on the 2011 Dodge Charger. Starting up front we, see a more rounded and prominent crosshair grille. We also note that the greenhouse appears more flowing with a sharply raked windshield.

Along the bodysides, it's apparent that the 2011 Charger will have very pronounced hips and shoulders with what appears to be a camouflaged accent directly behind the front wheel wells. At the very rear, the next Charger echoes the changes we saw up front with a smoother rear fascia and new tail light design. So, do you like what you see?

[Source: Car and Driver]
Spy Shots: 2011 Dodge Charger prototype bagged in testing originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 10 Dec 2009 18:39:00 EST.
Stinks. You might think that we're talking about the overall design of this shockingly orange scissor-door/scissor-trunk Dodge Charger R/T. Or the build quality, what with panel gaps that you can insert your index finger into, wheels so large the tie-rods can't hold them and the world's saddest piece of vinyl covering the trunk's goofy hinge. You might even be under the impression that we're referring to the poor Charger's taillights, which set a new SEMA low. But you'd be mistaken. While this poor, 26-inch dubbed Charger has no doubt been beaten to death with the SEMA stick, we're actually talking about its odor. Quite literally, it smells like synthetic cat urine.

The why and the how of this particular example of aftermarket hubris and wretched, mindless - and let's not forget pointless - excess don't really matter now, as the poor thing will spend the next 15 years quietly rotting in the side yard of some shop in Joliet, Illinois waiting to either shrug off this mortal coil or get turned into a fine LeMons car right around 2025 - whichever comes first. Despite the poor design and execution, the pointy end of our query-arrow is pointed straight at the heart of where the offending aroma came from. Did they finish off the interior with a nice shellacking of formaldehyde? Or, is this rough, slouching-towards-Bethlehem beast already sleeping outside, doors scissored up with cats as tenants? Who knows. But it's easily the Worst of Show; a sad, unfortunate offering at an otherwise entertaining and action-packed event.

It would be understandable, should you be lucky enough to occupy your driveway with a Dodge Charger SRT8, that the car would occupy your thoughts more often than something more bland. For high-style computing, many turn to the folks at Apple, but that's just one design direction. PC Rides has an altogether different number cruncher for those of you with a browsing history full of automotive websites.

No, it doesn't have a Hemi, but the PC Rides Charger SRT8 computer uses an Intel Core2Duo processor packed inside a unique form factor. The front bumper hides the tray for the optical drive, and out back are all the gozintas and gosoutas, which cover most bases with DVI, HDMI, six USB ports, audio, network, and VGA.

As you'd hope, appropriate SRT colors are available - no beige box here - and prices range from $1850 to $2495, depending on the level of performance you desire. The headlights fire up when the computer is on, and when the hard drive is moving data, the taillights flash, which might get annoying fast. Call it silly, but since it's an official Dodge licensed product, Chrysler calls it cash flow. Head on over to PC Rides to check out all the details, or check out the company's Facebook page instead.
2009 Dodge Charger SX 3.5 - Click above for high-res image gallery

It's been almost a year since a Dodge Charger passed through the Autoblog Garage, and this go-around was very different from the last. Comparedto our last Charger, this one is positively subtle. Last time around, we sampled one of Dodge's police car demonstrators decked out in full law enforcement regalia including a roof-top light bar and traditional black-and-white paint job. Driving the cop Charger was a mix of euphoria and paranoia. This time, Chrysler sent over a civilian SXT model powered by the company's 3.5-liter V6.

While the name hearkens back to coupes of the '60s and '70s (we'll ignore the forgettable badge job Omni edition of the '80s, thank you very much!) this is a full-sized sedan in the great American tradition. Given the current economic environment, future fuel economy regulations and the likely trajectory of gas prices, this is also a tradition that may be on its last legs. Read on after the jump to find out if this is a tradition worth preserving.

Gallery: Review: 2009 Dodge Charger SXT 3.5

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Review: 2009 Dodge Charger SXT 3.5

Review: 2009 Dodge Charger SXT 3.5 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Jan 2009 11:59:00 EST. As the Charger is the leading volume vehicle for Chrysler LLC in the Middle East, the choice doesn't come as much of a surprise. Delivery of the cop cars, however, isn't expected to take place for another couple months. In the meantime, the lot of them are heading to Canfield Equipment Service in Michigan where they'll be fitted for their new Kuwaiti roles in traffic, security, and emergency response. (Here's hoping none of our readers get a chance to check them out from the back seat once they're in service).

According to The Car Connection, Chrysler plans to makeover the 300 and Charger in 2011, but the reason the Pentastar people are keeping it rear-wheel-drive isn't to sate the public's lust for FR cars, rather there's no budget to develop a new front-wheel-drive platform.

TCC's insider says that updates to the HEMI might be underway and that the new styling direction of the 300 will maintain the sedan's gangsta cues, but the low roofline will probably be nixed in favor of a larger greenhouse.

[Source: The Car Connection]
Chrysler 300/Charger facelift due in 2011, RWD sticking around originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 14 Feb 2008 14:07:00 EST. There was a time when Dodge was a major player in the field of supplying vehicles to the police agencies of America. In the early '70s, the black and white Dodge Monaco as exemplified in the Blues Brothers film was a common sight patrolling the streets of this country. As the '80s faded into the '90s, Chrysler dropped out of the cop car market as its entire lineup went front-wheel drive.

Earlier this decade, rear-wheel-drive cars returned to the PentaStar range and the Ford Crown Victoria faced a new competitor in the form of the Dodge Magnum and Charger. When Autoblog asked Chrysler for a chance to spend some time behind the wheel of a Charger police special, the car-maker turned over a demo unit in black and white regalia complete with a full light kit and "Dodge City" police markings all over the sides. In spite of the prominent "Out of Service" markings across the windshield and trunk, the look proved to be a little too authentic for some. In true Autoblog fashion, however, we were "On a mission" of some kind and went the extra mile for you our loyal readers. Read all about our little adventure with the Charger cop car after the jump.

Gallery: In the Autoblog Garage: Dodge Charger Cop Car

Photos Copyright (C)2008 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Review: On a mission from God! The announcement is loaded with flowery prose that name-drops Richard Petty and talks of the Charger nameplate's race heritage (the Intrepid era is conveniently overlooked). That, says Dodge, is why it was a natural decision to campaign the full-time COT as a "Charger." We think it's mostly because the "real car" version of the Avenger is lame. Seriously, we'd take an old Spirit R/T over a new Avenger R/T any day.

Thanks for the tip, John!

[Source: NASCAR]
Sticker Swap: Dodge switches NASCAR COT from Avenger to Charger originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Nov 2007 17:32:00 EST.
Some of the most valuable muscle cars in the world today come from the Chrysler group, with Challengers in some cases auctioning for hundreds of thousands of dollars. The automaker certainly does a great job of making interactive displays for auto shows, and the expertise carries over to Woodward, as well. The Chrysler group display was chock full of tuners, muscle cars, chromed Hemi engines, and things to do for the kids. It shows Team Mopar's Samuel Hubinette piloting the Charger drift car into, through, and out of an airplane hangar. What's particularly cool is that you can follow the tire marks on the ground from previous takes and/or practice runs as the car does its thing. The superscript at the bottom of the screen as it begins reads "Closed Course. Professional Driver. Do Not Attempt."

Professional driver, indeed. Hubinette's nasty. Follow the jump for the spot. SPEED TV seems to still air it pretty regularly, too.

[Source: YouTube]
Continue reading That looks like fun! If you're into entering sweepstakes, you can register to win a new Dodge Charger R/T from Goody's Headache Powders. The ride will be finished to replicate a 1971 Richard Petty STP Charger, complete with the #43 on the doors and the Petty/Goody's anniversary logo on it, well, somewhere. Anyway, this might be even cooler to have than one of the modern takes on a "General Lee" Charger. Sadly, it's not an SRT8, but hey, it's free and it's got a HEMI. You can enter here. The prices of these classics are skyrocketing with Baby Boomers now able to buy back the cars they junked 30 years ago for 100 times the price they paid for one new back then. There were plenty of Challengers, Chargers, Shelby Mustangs, and Corvettes on display at the Gratiot Cruise this year, and some of the metal looks better than it did when it left the factory floor. We were able to snap well over 100 shots of the most beautiful muscle cars on Mother Earth, and they're all available for you in the gallery below. Make sure to point out your favorites in the comments section. The folks over at The Star are reporting that Chrysler is going to build a fifth model at their Brampton plant in Ontario, which currently assembles the 300, Charger, and Magnum. Challenger production is scheduled for next year, and the fifth vehicle, which could be built in 09' as a 2010 model, is expected to be the Imperial.

Chrysler is reportedly investing $700 million in the Brampton plant to bring the Imperial to life, and the Rolls-Royce and Bentley wannabe is expected to ride on an extended version of Chrysler's LX platform. The Imperial, which sported a 6.1L Hemi V8 as a concept, could also receive a diesel engine. Chrysler has yet to make an announcement on an additional vehicle at Brampton, but word is it that Chrysler Executive Vice President of Manufacturing Frank Ewasyshn is expected to do so June 11.

We aren't sold on the chunky, blocky, copycat looks of the Imperial, but Chrysler apparently thinks enough Americans will want the beast that they've all but pulled the trigger on making it all official

[Source: TheStar]
Chrysler Imperial one step closer to production originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 17 May 2007 09:14:00 EST.

While (potential) buyers sniff around The Chrysler Group, DaimlerChrysler is still working to keep the brand in fighting shape for its (potential) future owner, announcing that Dodge will return to Japan after a 5-year absence. Four models have been announced to go on sale through its local subsidiary, DaimlerChrysler Japan Co: the Caliber, Avenger, Charger, and Nitro.

Since 2002, when Dodge shipped its last Viper to Nippon, independent importers have maintained the Chrysler Group flag. Even though fewer than 1,000 Chrysler-brand vehicles were sold in the first quarter of this year, the president of DaimlerChrysler Japan, Hans Tempel, declared "No matter what the outcome of Chrysler is, we will continue making our business more profitable in Japan."

Diesel-powered Jeeps and Dodges are also being considered for the Japanese market, though no sales goals have been quoted.

DaimlerChrysler is bringing home more than 68,000 vehicles to reprogram balky brake computers.

The 11 affected models are 2007 versions of the Sebring, 300, Charger, Magnum, Caliber, Commander, Grand Cherokee, Liberty, Nitro and Compass. Whew.

Chrysler says computers in the recalled vehicles' could fail, leading to a loss of antilock brakes, traction control and speedomter functions. We don't remember much from our drivers' ed class, but we're pretty sure brake failure is hardly ever a good thing. Thankfully DC says nobody's been hurt yet.

Oh, and you Sebring drivers must have broken a mirror or something. While one team of crack DC mechanics gives your car a brain transplant, another team will be reteaching it to defrost your windshield. So take a book or something. That particular recall affects about 6,000 new Sebrings.

[Source: Reuters]
Chrysler recalls more than 68k 2007s originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 23 Dec 2006 14:10:00 EST. Why not send your kid and 10 of his friends to the blowout party of the year in a 30-foot long, Banana Yellow Dodge Charger R/T Daytona limo. As luck would have it, one is up for sale on eBay right now, and would you believe there's no takers at the Buy It Now price of $59,900? The Charger's 5.7L HEMI V8 is likely a little strained under the extra weight, but we're sure this stretch can still get up and go when asked. It will seat 11 people, and those being chauffeured are treated to the standard limo accouterments of a wet bar, multiple TVs, and an interior lighting system that uses fiber optics, lasers and a strobe light (what, no smoke machine?). Actually, no, it's Sublime. Our friends over at ChargerForums.com have obtained some information about the latest special edition of the LX cars; the Dodge Charger Daytona Sublime Edition. Sublime refers to the eye-popping shade of green, instantly harking back to the "Sublime Green" hue of the musclecar era. A total of 1500 Sublime Daytona R/Ts will be built, and the model is slated to debut in December, just in time for Christmas. The color is hideous in a radioactive pea-soup kinda way, just like it was back in 1970, perfect. Us car guys love it for the way it makes MoPars stand out like a sour-apple Spree candy. That's the very same reason you may have a hard time convincing others that their colorphobia is the real problem. We hope that this 4th edition of special Charger isn't the last, as the Chrysler group strip-mines their mod past. Thanks to tipster John for the info!

(Another pic after the jump)

[Source: chargerforums.com]
Continue reading SassyGrass! - NeoRetro color for the Charger

SassyGrass! - NeoRetro color for the Charger originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 01 Dec 2006 17:23:00 EST. When the Cordoba was released, Dodge got a rebadged version that took over the Charger nameplate from the sporty muscle machines that preceded it. In print campaigns, Dodge touted the car as the "first luxury Charger." I'm guessing that Charger fans felt completely betrayed by this one. And who can really blame them.

Why anyone would choose this warmed-over Cordoba over the real thing -- with its tour de force marketing campaign (still memorable 30 years later), and Chrysler's established luxury creds -- is a complete mystery.

Compare the Cordoba ad to the less-than-scintillating TV spot for the 1975 Charger starring actress Jennifer O'Neill. (Fun stuff: Note the rotating turntable the car's sitting on, made to look like it's grass.) This is a Dodge Charger?

The slogan was "You'll love the change we made." Yeah, right. The Cordoba was the introduction of something new, whereas the '75 Charger represented the demise of a storied name.

Watch it after the jump, and while you're there, check out a copy of one of the car's print ads.

1975 Charger Special Edition photo via NZ Mopar Registry.

[Source: YouTube]
Continue reading VIDEO: Rebadge-O-Rama - The '75 Dodge Charger

VIDEO: Rebadge-O-Rama - The '75 Dodge Charger originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Oct 2006 11:52:00 EST.
