<br />
For years, Microsoft founder and former CEO Bill Gates was the keynoter at the Consumer Electronics Show. When Microsoft first announced its intention to create software for cars nearly a decade ago, most people that had suffered through the indignities of the blue screen of death recoiled in horror. The idea of having to close all of our car windows and re-booting our cars became a running joke. While Microsoft's automotive in-roads probably didn't get as far as the company hoped, it does have one prominent application: Sync, one of the most popular options in Ford vehicles in recent years. <br />
<br />
With Gates' retirement, Ford CEO Alan Mullaly will be taking on the big keynote in Vegas next January and the Consumer Electronics Association (CES) will honor the automaker for its efforts in developing Sync and the Work Solutions package for its trucks. Ford has continued to expand the functionality of Sync recently adding traffic, directions and general information, as well integrating with Bluetooth phones to automatically call 911 in an emergency. The show organizers have also named the new Taurus as the official car of the 2010 show. Why? We're not entirely certain.<br />

Gary Shapiro, president of the Consumer Electronics Association and (apparently) the 16th most influential person in the tech industry, made the announcement at Ford's Dearborn Development Center.<br />
<br />
This marks the third year in a row that a Detroit CEO keynotes the world's biggest gadget and gear show. Former GM CEO Rick Wagoner spoke at the 2008 show with Mulally taking the podium in 2009. However, 2010 marks the first time someone from the auto industry delivers the opening address. Mulally will speak at 8:30am on January 7, 2010 at the Hilton theater and he will apparently announce some new features for Ford's popular Sync system. Get all the details in the press release below the fold.<br />

And again at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/13/ces-2009-dodge-journey-to-get-onstar-like-features-this-summer/">this year's CES,</a> Hughes let us play with even cooler stuff in a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/27/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-dodge-journey-r-t/">Dodge Journey</a>. They bragged of downloadable apps for your Chrysler-branded vehicle and super-cool, futuristic travel guides from your in-dash nav system. Stuff that might convince someone to actually purchase a Journey.<br /><br />But, alas, since then, Chrysler went bankrupt and it seems the company's relationship with Hughes soured. In an official statement Hughes tells Autoblog:<br /><blockquote><em>New Chrysler introduced additional business terms that were not part of either the prior business discussions or the original arrangement. As a result, we reached an impasse in the negotiations and are ceasing our work with new Chrysler to deploy our hardware and launch our services with them in the fourth quarter of 2009, as was previously planned.</em><br /></blockquote>That's okay, Hughes says, because they still have Mercedes-Benz as a customer, and they don't need Chrysler anymore. We're not financial experts by any means, but as we stumbled through the SEC report, it was obvious Hughes had invested a lot of time, money and emotions into making things work with Chrysler and that it might take a while to get over losing the bond they once cherished. <br /><br />In any case, you can <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1410240/000119312509176069/d10q.htm#toc57169_4">read the SEC filing for yourself here</a> or check out Hughes' full official statement to Autoblog after the jump<a href="http://www.hughestelematics.com/" />. <em>Thanks for the tip, MBAcurafan!</em><br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/hughes-telematics-at-ces-2008/low/">Hughes Telematics at CES 2008</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/hughes-telematics-at-ces-2008/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/drivecon_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/hughes-telematics-at-ces-2008/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/drivecon_diag_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/hughes-telematics-at-ces-2008/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/drivecon_map_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/hughes-telematics-at-ces-2008/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/hughesjeeepbk_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/hughes-telematics-at-ces-2008/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/hughesjeep_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1410240/000119312509176069/d10q.htm#toc57169_4">SEC.gov</a>]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/20/hughes-telematics-and-chrysler-relationship-looks-to-be-over/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hughes Telematics and Chrysler relationship looks to be over</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/20/hughes-telematics-and-chrysler-relationship-looks-to-be-over/">Hughes Telematics and Chrysler relationship looks to be over</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 20 Aug 2009 17:59:00 EST. <br />At the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show (<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/CES/">CES</a>) <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/08/ces-2009-microsoft-ford-update-sync/">Ford announced that three new features</a> would be included on the next iteration of the SYNC system: traffic data, GPS-guided directions and the ability to snag information from the web through the user's data/GPS/Bluetooth-enabled smartphone to display or read weather conditions, sports scores and other information through the stereo.<br /><br />On May 26th, the upgrade will be made available to all current 2010 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury owners (you download the update to your PC, then transfer it to the SYNC system through a thumb drive) and all new 2010 models will be equipped with the upgrade from the factory. But as Ford CEO Alan Mulally promised, there's more on the way.<br /><br />Ford and Microsoft plan to continually update SYNC, and according to Charlotte Fisher from Ford's Design and Technology team, "every six to eight to twelve months we'll be delivering new services." One of the possible features Ford could include on future iterations of SYNC is streaming internet radio, and Fisher confirmed that Ford is currently "talking with <a href="http://pandora.com/">Pandora</a>." The U.S. military is also using the high-dollar simulator to train its soldiers to drive in the tricky sands of Iraq. <a href="http://www.d-box.com/">D-Box's</a> top-of-the-line GP Pro 200 is a much more affordable high-end racing simulator. It'll only set you back $14,000. <br /><br />Both are PC-based and both offer much more realism than your Laz-E-Boy being moved around by your little brother. The SC830 is definitely more hardcore, with the seat and displays mounted on a tubular-steel frame. The GP Pro 200 sits lower, is more compact and looks less complicated than the Simcraft. While CES is and should be known for its unabashed display of geekery, it has also become a venue to display some top-notch custom automobiles. Take for instance the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-the-cars-of-ces-part-ii/1291185/">Ford Flex</a> at Sony's XPlod display. Sony says it wears an "urban-themed custom paint job" on the outside and a long list of the company's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/08/ces-2009-sony-xplods-with-new-automotive-units/">XPlod audio products</a> on the inside. The urban decor impressively even extends to the doors' kickplates and interior frames. Now that's attention to detail.<br /><br />A couple of booths over (which in CES speak means several thousand yards away), Monster skipped the fancy paint and just went for the fancy cars. Their super-blue Bentley GT looked almost stock until closer inspection revealed Monster's logos <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-the-cars-of-ces-part-ii/1291200/">imprinted on the roof</a> and the Bentley trunk badge <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-the-cars-of-ces-part-ii/1291199/">replaced with</a> the Monster's corporate red M. Monster's booth was also home to a Lambo Murcielago whose exterior was mercifully left unscathed by such blatant branding.<br /><br />Other cars of note were Toyota's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/04/sema-2008-toyotas-truck-trio-is-3x-cooler-than-modded-venzas/">Ducati Tacoma</a> from SEMA and a really bad-ass, turbocharged, LSX-powered Cadillac wearing some sweet leather seats and a Strut S grille and wheels. Alpine hopes to rectify matter with its new touch-screen iXA-W404 unit works, which boasts a new interface, new features and all the connected goodies audiophiles on the move require.<br /><br />iPod and iPhone owners will notice that the Alpine's 4.3-inch, touch-screen face displays album art of the current song, and the names of the next two and most recent songs played. Song selection can be made from an alphabetical list just as on the iPod Touch and iPhone or by flipping through the album art in an animation similar to Apple's Cover Flow. Alpine's newest unit also supports video playback from an iPhone or any 30-pin iPod. W404 owners can choose to display three of five "widgets" included with the unit, which include a clock, calendar and photo viewer. The unit can be upgraded by adding components from Alpine's lineup, ranging from GPS, HD Radio, rear-view camera and Bluetooth connectivity. The W404 head unit can even control video display on rear-seat monitors. <br /><br />The 2DIN iXA-W404 will be available in April for a suggested retail of $550. Alpine's HD radio tuner is a $230 add-on, the rear-view camera system is $220, the Bluetooth module is $180, navigation capability is $350 and a dual seven-inch headrest monitor package is $750.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2008-alpine-keeps-in-touch-with-ipod-users/low/">CES 2009: Alpine keeps in touch with iPod users</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2008-alpine-keeps-in-touch-with-ipod-users/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/alpine_wx404_ces---1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2008-alpine-keeps-in-touch-with-ipod-users/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/alpine_wx404_ces---2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2008-alpine-keeps-in-touch-with-ipod-users/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/alpine_wx404_ces---3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/13/ces-2009-alpine-keeps-in-touch-with-ipod-users/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CES 2009: Alpine keeps in touch with iPod users</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/13/ces-2009-alpine-keeps-in-touch-with-ipod-users/">CES 2009: Alpine keeps in touch with iPod users</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 13 Jan 2009 09:01:00 EST. <br />Visteon, a major supplier of automotive instrument panels, has a vision for future car interiors that will soon give you a different view of your dashboard.<br /><br />One of the most interesting ideas Visteon has developed is a user-customizable gauge cluster that they say will be available soon from a major manufacturer. Like traditional gauges, Visteon's Reconfigurable Cluster displays speed and RPMs using classic needles and numbers. Untraditionally, though, the new design simulates those gauges with LCD displays that can be modified to present the information in almost any way imaginable. End customers could potentially even upload their own designs, skins, etc. to make their instrument panels their own unique design. <br /><br />The clear plastic hood surrounding the cluster isn't merely decorative. As you can see in the photo above, when a door is ajar, the hood glows red. When high-beams are on, it turns a subtle blue. Turn signal indicators light up the entire left or right side yellow. It's a simple and elegant feature. <br /><br />Click through the jump to read more about Visteon's instrument technologies and click here for a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-visteon-shows-off-reconfigurable-gaugces-2009-visteons-reconfigurable-gauge-clustere-cluster/">high-res gallery</a> from the company's booth at CES.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-visteon-shows-off-reconfigurable-gaugces-2009-visteons-reconfigurable-gauge-clustere-cluster/low/">CES 2009: Visteon's reconfigurable gauge cluster</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-visteon-shows-off-reconfigurable-gaugces-2009-visteons-reconfigurable-gauge-clustere-cluster/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/visteon_ces2009_cjt---1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-visteon-shows-off-reconfigurable-gaugces-2009-visteons-reconfigurable-gauge-clustere-cluster/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/visteon_ces2009_cjt---2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-visteon-shows-off-reconfigurable-gaugces-2009-visteons-reconfigurable-gauge-clustere-cluster/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/visteon_ces2009_cjt---3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-visteon-shows-off-reconfigurable-gaugces-2009-visteons-reconfigurable-gauge-clustere-cluster/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/visteon_ces2009_cjt---4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-visteon-shows-off-reconfigurable-gaugces-2009-visteons-reconfigurable-gauge-clustere-cluster/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/visteon_ces2009_cjt---5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><em><strong><small>Live Photos Copyright (C)2009 Chris Tutor / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/09/ces-2009-visteon-shows-off-dasboard-views-of-the-future/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CES 2009: Visteon shows off dashboard of the future</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/09/ces-2009-visteon-shows-off-dasboard-views-of-the-future/">CES 2009: Visteon shows off dashboard of the future</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 12:28:00 EST. <br />Just like we thought, FLIR wasn't on board with <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/04/ces-2009-preview-flir-helps-bmws-detect-pedestrians/ ">our plan</a> to drive their <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/04/ces-2009-preview-flir-helps-bmws-detect-pedestrians/">night-vision BMW</a> through the Nevada desert, but we did get to check out the car's in-dash display.<br /><br />Our demo was indoors only, though we still got a good idea of how it works. Showgoers passing in front of the BMW's heat-sensing camera appeared in nice detail despite the relatively small difference in their temperature and their surroundings. FLIR rep Jay James said the camera can detect a .05 degree difference in temperatures, which translates into many more shades of gray on the monitor. <br /><br />The system is tuned to look several yards down the road and so was thrown off by the number of pedestrians within inches of its bumper. But whenever someone walked through its danger zone, the system's display indicated a pedestrian by outliing that person with a yellow rectangle.<br /><br />The demo BMW had been retrofitted with the system, but new BMWs with the factory-installed version flash a yellow triangle in the head-up display to alert drivers to take action. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-flir-demos-bmw-pedestrian-detection/low/">CES 2009: FLIR demos BMW Pedestrian Detection</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-flir-demos-bmw-pedestrian-detection/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/flir_ces2009_cjt---1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-flir-demos-bmw-pedestrian-detection/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/flir_ces2009_cjt---2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-flir-demos-bmw-pedestrian-detection/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/flir_ces2009_cjt---3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-flir-demos-bmw-pedestrian-detection/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/flir_ces2009_cjt---4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-flir-demos-bmw-pedestrian-detection/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/flir_ces2009_cjt---5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><em><strong><small>Live Photos Copyright (C)2009 Chris Tutor / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/09/ces-2008-hands-on-with-flir-equipped-bmw/">CES 2009: Hands on with heat-sensing FLIR-equipped BMW</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 11:18:00 EST. Fulton Innovation has teamed up with <a href="http://www.leggett.com/">Leggett &amp; Platt</a> to bring <a href="http://www.ecoupled.com/applicationsAutomotive.html">eCoupled</a> Intelligent Wireless Power Technology to your mobile phone, MP3 player, radar detector or just about anything else that needs electricity. <br /><br />Instead of a web of snarled power cords, the eCoupled system charges any enabled gadget resting on the power pad. As in the illustration, enabled devices resting within range of the pad would be juiced up just as if they were plugged in. <br /><br />Bret Lewis, director of Fulton Innovation, gave us a demo of the eCoupled system Wednesday night. Fulton had outfitted an iPhone and a Motorola Bluetooth headset with an eCoupled coil. Lewis took the two devices, laid them on a wooden bowl and, as if by magic, the two began to charge. The only indication the bowl was anything but dead tree was an electrical cord running from the back. Underneath, the bowl had been hollowed to accommodate a metal plate with the coil inductor. The same type system could easily be incorporated into a car's console or instrument panel.<br /><br />Ideally, Lewis says, gadget manufacturers would incorporate the technology into portable devices as they're designed. In the real world, of course, there are potentially billions of legacy devices that could benefit from a third-party attachment to allow the wireless batter charging. <br /><br />But it gets better! Lewis says the system can also transfer data, potentially allowing wireless coupling of music players and mobile phones with you car. <br /><br />We also spoke with Ross Haith Jr. of Leggett &amp; Platt who let us in on some commercial vehicle projects they have ready to launch as soon as this year. Read about that as well as press releases from the two companies after the jump.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-wireless-gadget-charging-coming-to-you-car/low/">CES 2009: Wireless gadget charging coming to you car</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-wireless-gadget-charging-coming-to-you-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/ecoupled_ces2009_cjt---1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-wireless-gadget-charging-coming-to-you-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/ecoupled_ces2009_cjt---2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-wireless-gadget-charging-coming-to-you-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/ecoupled_ces2009_pr-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-wireless-gadget-charging-coming-to-you-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/ecoupled_ces2009_pr-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><span style="font-style: italic;"><br /></span><em><strong><small>Live Photos Copyright (C)2009 Chris Tutor / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/08/ces-2009-wireless-gadget-charging-coming-to-you-car/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CES 2009: Wireless gadget charging coming to your car</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/08/ces-2009-wireless-gadget-charging-coming-to-you-car/">CES 2009: Wireless gadget charging coming to your car</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 13:29:00 EST. The next iteration of SYNC will sport new features able to take full advantage of a user's GPS-enabled bluetooth smartphone. <br /><br />Boiled down to the bare essentials, these features are summed up as Traffic, Directions and Information. The Traffic feature sends texts messages with traffic alerts to the user's phone, or the SYNC system can read them aloud in the car. The Directions function mimics a full-feature navigation system by displaying directions on the radio and speaking them audibly through the sound system. And finally there's information, which allows users to access sports, weather and news of all types through SYNC. <br /><br />The best part is that all of these features follow you to any vehicle equipped with SYNC via your smartphone. Ford even claims that the iPhone works with these new capabilities despite the fact Apple limits the phone's Bluetooth capability and AT&amp;T doesn't allow data tethering. We'll be sure to get more details on how all this works later today when we meet with Ford execs and get a demonstration.<br /><br />The big Blue Oval says it will offer these new SYNC features on almost all Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles with three years of service included right up front. Check out Ford's full press release and see a video demonstrartion of the new features after the jump.<br /><br />[Source: Ford]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/08/ces-2009-microsoft-ford-update-sync/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CES 2009: SYNC updated with Traffic, Directions and Information</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/08/ces-2009-microsoft-ford-update-sync/">CES 2009: SYNC updated with Traffic, Directions and Information</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 07:59:00 EST. <br />The doors to the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show don't officially open until Thursday morning, but we got a sneak preview of the setup going on in the LVCC's North Hall. That's where most of the automotive action will be concentrated and there are plenty of wild rides lining the halls.<br /><br />You'll notice that in most of the photos, like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/06/sema-2008-galpin-scythe-concept-makes-no-excuses/">Galpin Scythe</a> (above), the exhibitors' booths are far from complete. As the week unfolds, we'll bring you more from the floor and attempt to get our hands on some of the best car-related tech in Vegas. For <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/31/knight-rider-the-liveblog-season-1-episode-9/">Alex</a>, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-the-cars-of-ces/1264779/">original KITT</a>'s here - or at least a close facsimile - and for all you <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/06/tear-in-my-beer-gm-reportedly-kills-off-2010-pontiac-g8-st/">Pontiac G8 ST</a> fans, Azentek/Navigon has everyone's favorite stillborn ute on hand, although it could just be a Holden Commodore with a G8 nose job. We'll find out more tomorrow, so stay tuned.<br /><br /><strong>UPDATE</strong>: We spoke with Azentek about their G8 ST. Apparently it is indeed one of the only G8 STs in existence. Donnie Zanney of Azentek says his company is just down the road from GM and, like a good neighbor, lets the tech company borrow a car every now and then. Unfortunately, yes, they have to give it back.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-the-cars-of-ces/low/">CES 2009: The cars of CES</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-the-cars-of-ces/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/ces_09_preview_cars---01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-the-cars-of-ces/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/ces_09_preview_cars---02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-the-cars-of-ces/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/ces_09_preview_cars---03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-the-cars-of-ces/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/ces_09_preview_cars---04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-the-cars-of-ces/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/ces_09_preview_cars---05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><span style="font-style: italic;"><br /></span><em><strong><small>Photos Copyright (C)2009 Chris Tutor / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/07/ces-2009-the-cars-of-ces/">CES 2009: The cars of CES</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 20:05:00 EST. You'll remember that two years ago at the Consumer Electronics Show, Ford and Microsoft announced their partnership on Ford's SYNC system, and last January <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/08/ces-2008-live-blogging-the-rick-wagoner-keynote/">General Motor's CEO Rick Wagoner</a> chose Las Vegas to unveil the all-electric Cadillac <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/08/ces-2008-cadillac-provoq-fuel-cell-concept-revealed/">Provoq concept</a>. It was the first time in the convention's 40-year history an automaker had revealed a concept car to the world there.<br /><br />This year it's Ford's turn again at CES, with <a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20080829/ANA02/808289974/1200">CEO Alan Mulally</a> taking the keynote spot. CES runs January 8-11 next year, but there's no word yet on what day Mulally will make his appearance. There's also no word on what he'll be saying or revealing to the thousands of people gathered in that Vegas ballroom. New SYNC features are a given, but will Ford also choose CES to roll out its plug-in hybrid project? Stay tuned for full coverage from the Autoblog team.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2008-cadillac-provoq-live-reveal/low/">CES 2008: Cadillac Provoq Live reveal</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2008-cadillac-provoq-live-reveal/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/cadillac-provoq-live-reveal-1-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2008-cadillac-provoq-live-reveal/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/cadillac-provoq-live-reveal-1-10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2008-cadillac-provoq-live-reveal/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/cadillac-provoq-live-reveal-1-11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2008-cadillac-provoq-live-reveal/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/cadillac-provoq-live-reveal-1-12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2008-cadillac-provoq-live-reveal/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/cadillac-provoq-live-reveal-1-13_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20080829/ANA02/808289974/1200">Automotive News</a> - sub. req'd, Photo by GEOFF ROBINS/AFP/Getty]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/29/ford-ceo-alan-mulally-to-keynote-ces/">Ford CEO Alan Mulally to keynote CES</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 29 Aug 2008 13:59:00 EST. As described by the title, it's a flatscreen monitor that sits on top of a fuel pump. It gives the consumer something to do besides staring at passing vehicles while waiting around for the tank to fill. The unit is already in use at many gas stations throughout the United States. While the idea of being bombarded by even more advertising when out driving is not a pleasant thought, the TV network might be helpful in exposing folks to urgent news alerts such as bridge collapses, dust storms, or forest fires. In Southern California some pump televisions also display real-time traffic data in addition to weather, news and (of course) advertisements. While that can be useful info when trying to plan a route through clogged freeways, the downside of the PumpTop set is its poor screen visibility in extreme sunlight, which might explain why many stations equipped with the devices simply leave them turned off. <br /><br />[Source: Engadget]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/12/ces-2008-pumptop-tv-coming-your-way/">CES 2008: PumpTop TV coming your way</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sat, 12 Jan 2008 13:34:00 EST. OK just kidding, he did hedge on a number of questions as would be expected of any major executive, especially one heading up the largest automaker in the world (for now). A range of issues were discussed, including alternative fuels, hybrids and the fate of the Zeta platform beyond the Pontiac G8 and the Camaro. <br /><br />Wagoner reiterated that nothing had changed on the status of the Volt and that it was still on track. He expressed appreciation that the EPA had denied the California waiver request for its greenhouse gas rules so that carmakers could focus on meeting one national set of CAFE standards. Also related to fuel economy, he declined to comment on the status of some vehicles planned off of the Zeta platform, aside from the fact that they were still considering options including models with smaller engines. The not-at-all unattractive Indy Car driver is at CES with one of her sponsors, GoDaddy. We figured Indy Cars are fully within our beat and raced over to get a couple of shots of Ms. Patrick. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2008-danica-patrick-hearts-autoblog/564656/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" align="right" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/shirt_215.jpg" /></a>And, whatdya know? Once she saw the Autoblog press badge she went nuts, grabbed a t-shirt and a Sharpie and went to town. We were able to stop her before covering the t-shirt in loving missives expressing her adoration of Autoblog, and refused to give her our autographs, too. We just can't go handing those out to everyone ya know.<br /><br />OK, truth. She grudgingly signed our shirt after about a gazillion others and then even more grudgingly did the Autoblog thing. But the not-at-all unattractive bit is true. <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2008-danica-patrick-hearts-autoblog/low/">CES 2008: Danica Patrick hearts Autoblog</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2008-danica-patrick-hearts-autoblog/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/danica-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2008-danica-patrick-hearts-autoblog/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/dpphoto_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2008-danica-patrick-hearts-autoblog/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/signed_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2008-danica-patrick-hearts-autoblog/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/theshirt_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/07/ces-2008-danica-patrick-hearts-autoblog/">CES 2008: Danica Patrick hearts Autoblog</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 07 Jan 2008 17:04:00 EST. While very few details were released, GM says that the Provoq will be "free from petroleum fuel and emissions." That means the Provoq could be either an all-electric vehicle or possibly another variant of the automaker's E-flex platform that has spawned the <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2007/01/07/detroit-auto-show-its-here-gms-plug-in-hybrid-is-the-chevy-v/">Chevy Volt</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/09/10/officially-official-opel-flextreme-concept-40g-km-of-co2-and/">Opel Flextreme</a>. Those two concepts are both series hybrids with a gas engine and diesel range extender, respectively. While GM did show off the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/19/shanghai-motor-show-gm-unveils-fuel-cell-e-flex/">E-flex platform with a hydrogen fuel-cell range extender</a> at last year's Shanghai Motor Show, we've yet to see it paired with a body. Perhaps then the Provoq will be the hydrogen fuel-cell series hybrid concept that we've been waiting to see. There's one more day to go before Wagoner takes the podium in Vegas and reveals all. <br /><br />[Source: GM]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/07/ces-2008-wagoner-to-unveil-cadillac-provoq-concept-tomorrow/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CES 2008: Wagoner to unveil Cadillac Provoq Concept tomorrow</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/07/ces-2008-wagoner-to-unveil-cadillac-provoq-concept-tomorrow/">CES 2008: Wagoner to unveil Cadillac Provoq Concept tomorrow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 07 Jan 2008 10:35:00 EST. According to CNN Money/Autos, Wagoner is expected to reveal that GM will be testing driverless cars by 2015 and have cars on the road by 2018. What is meant by "on the road" remains to be seen, as buying a real production Tahoe with this technology within ten years seems like a stretch. Still, the success of the DARPA Grand Challenge these past three years in which driverless vehicles pilot themselves through a miles-long course shows that we do have the technology to take our hands off the wheel. GM played its own part in sponsoring the Carnegie Mellon team that has done well in each competition, including the most recent one in which the university's driverless Tahoe called <a href="http://www.tartanracing.org/">the "Boss"</a> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/11/05/gm-powered-carnegie-mellon-team-take-first-prize-at-darpa/">won the whole thing</a>. We've confirmed that CMU's Boss will <a href="http://my.cmu.edu/site/events/template.MAXIMIZE/menuitem.ae027c3e07f657ff776ea0a1d4a02008/?javax.portlet.tpst=8453c10c16d45c67ad76fb8ed388167d_ws_MX&amp;javax.portlet.prp_8453c10c16d45c67ad76fb8ed388167d_viewID=content&amp;javax.portlet.prp_8453c10c16d45c67ad76fb8ed388167d_docName=Tartan%20Racing%27s%20Boss%20To%20Appear%20on%20Today%20Show%2C%20Jan.%208&amp;javax.portlet.prp_8453c10c16d45c67ad76fb8ed388167d_folderPath=%2Fadministrative%2FunivAdvancement%2F&amp;javax.portlet.begCacheTok=token&amp;javax.portlet.endCacheTok=token">be on stage with Wagoner</a> as he gives his speech on Tuesday. Thanks to its association with Carnegie Mellon and the DARPA Grand Challenge competitions, GM is definitely on the forefront of developing driverless tech, but promising hands-free driving in ten years is a bold move. We'll just have to wait and see what the Ricker says when he takes the stage on Tuesday.<br /><br />[Source: CNN Money/Autos]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/07/ces-2008-wagoner-expected-to-announce-driverless-cars-within-a/">CES 2008: Wagoner expected to announce driverless cars within a decade</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 07 Jan 2008 06:57:00 EST.
