Europe's Mercedes-Benz S 320 CDI BlueEfficiency began this year as the most frugal S-Class available. With 235 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque, 31 mpg, and S-Class luxury, it's a fine runner if you want to have it all without grenading your treehugging credentials. But hang on - new reports are now popping up suggesting that Mercedes will soon up the frugal luxury stakes with a new S 250 CDI BlueEfficiency - the first S-Class with a four-cylinder engine.

According to the rumors, it will use the 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged diesel four-pot fitted to the E- and C-Class, putting out 224 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque. The obvious sacrifice in sheer grunt and top end ought to be made up for by the mileage, which is predicted to be 35 mpg. To keep the four- and six-cylinder engines from being too close to one another, the six is said to grow in output to 285 hp and 516 lb-ft, and that should spell the end of the eight-cylinder S 450 CDI engine.
Case in point: the newly-introduced PowerXtra D8 (III) kit for Mercedes-Benz's GL and ML 420 CDI models. The upgrade, which suposedly only takes 30 minutes for a dealer to install, provides an instant 44 horsepower boost.

Translation: 350 post-upgrade horsepower and a monstrous 590 lbs (800 Nm) of stump-yanking torque (though we wonder if anyone ever puts these things to work in that way). 62 mph arrives in a smidge over 7 seconds for the big GL-Class sled, and six seconds flat for the ML. That's plenty peppy either way you look at it. For maximum stealth, you can leave your ride stock-looking. If you're more of an extrovert (and something tells me that Mercedes owners browsing the Brabus catalog fall into this category), you can check in with any number of Brabus mods as seen in the little photo gallery attached to this post.

[Source: Brabus]
Continue reading Brabus intros power kit for Mercedes GL and ML420 CDI

Brabus intros power kit for Mercedes GL and ML420 CDI originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 16 Jan 2007 08:54:00 EST. The S420 CDI features a 4.0-liter V8 CDI diesel engine that produces 320 hp and a stump-pulling 538 ft-lbs. or torque, all while burning 9.4 to 9.6 liters of diesel for every 100 kilometers travelled on the New European Driving Cycle. Mash the throttle and the S420 CDI will entertain you with a 6.6 second trip to 62 mph, which ain't half bad for a land yacht like the S-Class. Mercedes says that with its 90-liter fuel tank and a feathery foot, the S420 CDI could nearly travel 1,000 kilometers or 621 miles on a full tank. The turbodiesel engine is also clean enough to meet European emission standards for diesels by using common-rail technology, piezoelectric injectors and diesel particular filter. This new model for the European market means the Benz garage is now stocked with eight models of the S-Class: two diesels (S320 CDI and S420 CDI), one gas V6 (S350), two gas V8s (S450 and S500), one gas V12 (S600), and two AMG models (S63 AMG and S65 AMG). The new S420 CDI was not listed as a Bluetec diesel, which means it likely will not be offered in the U.S. anytime soon.

Check out the complete press release from MB after the jump.

[Source: Mercedes-Benz]
Continue reading Mercedes-Benz adding big diesel to S-Class

Mercedes-Benz adding big diesel to S-Class originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 06 Dec 2006 17:38:00 EST. The E320 is the only vehicle that will come equipped with BLUETEC and urea injection currently, while the others are utilizing a common rail setup. All will come equipped with BLUETEC and urea by 2008.

Hot on the heels of the widespread adoption of new diesel throughout the U.S. last week, Mercedes has announced the impending arrival of three BLUETEC equipped models.

The ML320 CDI SUV, the R320 CDI, tarted-up minivan and the E320 BLUETEC will all come equipped with a three-liter V6 diesel that will make upwards of 200 HP and close to 400 lb.-ft. of torque. Mercedes contends that these new diesels will provide the pull of a V8, yet return mileage numbers comparable to a four-cylinder.

The E320 BLUETEC sedan will chug happily along for over 700 miles before it needs more go juice, returning 40 percent better fuel economy when matched up against a comparably equipped E-series. The ML320 CDI increases its fuel mileage by 28 percent and the R-class will get a 32 percent bump in fuel economy.

These new engines claim to meet the world's most stringent emissions standards and should begin arriving on U.S. shores soon.

Click on through for MSRP's on each model, along with the EPA mileage figures.
Continue reading Three Mercedes-Benz BLUETEC vehicles are on their way

Three Mercedes-Benz BLUETEC vehicles are on their way originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Oct 2006 11:26:00 EST.
