This was bound to happen. Volkswagen's relentless drive for big volume has the brand mining seemingly every niche it can find for additional sales worldwide. And with its CLS Shooting Brake, fellow countryman Mercedes-Benz has already shown that a wagon based off of a "four-door coupe" can look dead sexy and command extra dollars. So it follows that the Volkswagen CC (whose existence is all but directly attributable to the success of the original CLS sedan) will also get a load-lugging variant. That's according to the UK's Autocar, which notes that the five-door will come in the CC's next generation.

According to the report, the next CC will be available in front and all-wheel drive variants with the usual assortment of gas and diesel four-cylinders found in the Wolfsburg empire, with the possibility of a gas plug-in hybrid model, too. The rakish estate will ride atop VW's MQB architecture, a shorter variant of which is also found underneath the new Golf. The scalable chassis is set to spread like kudzu throughout the company's lineup, but the CC probably won't happen until after the launch of the next European-market Passat in 2015.

Will we get it in North America? Hard to say. Volkswagen sells the standard CC saloon here, but not in particularly large numbers, and when the company moved to a North American-specific Passat, it dumped the wagon variant. The traditional VW estate apparently continues to pick up sales momentum abroad, however, making the CC Shooting Brake a seemingly natural fit for buyers who still want the utility of a two-box form but can afford to sacrifice a bit of cargo room in the name of style.
VW readying CC Shooting Brake? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 Feb 2013 10:58:00 EST.
It was just nine months ago that Strategic Vision announced its 2011 Total Value Awards, but you don't have to wait until next year for the 2012 awards. The Volkswagen Group keeps its lead as the number one brand, with seven products taking top category spots: Golf, Jetta Wagon, CC, Eos and Audi A3 Wagon, Q5 and Q7. Strategic Vision says "true innovation" - "rich and impactful, intuitive, motivational, in-depth and is able to trigger description by the user in great specificity" - is the open secret of the brands with the strongest showings. Results are culled from 77,153 owners covering more than 350 new cars bought between September of 2011 and 2012 ranked in the Total Value Index (TVI).

Other notable winners are Hyundai-Kia following VW in the brand category and having the Hyundai Elantra and Kia Sorento among category winners, the BMW Z4 taking the premium roadster category and the highest overall score of any vehicle, the Chevrolet Volt continuing to gather silverware in the Special Category, nabbing the second-highest score of all and representative of "nearly perfect innovation," and Chrysler and Dodge being most improved.

Some critics have suggested that the Volkswagen CC may have lost some of its visual verve following its 2012 facelift, the original CC's organic "four-door coupe" form having been made a bit more ordinary with version 2.0.

This Volkswagen still has plenty of charm, of course, and those looking for a more aggressive appearance now have the option of the German automaker's newly revealed R-Line model. Primarily an appearance package, the $32,195 R-Line (plus $795 destination) features a unique grille and body kit, with model-specific side skirts and front fascia. Additional standard features include 18-inch "Mallory" alloys, projector headlamps, paddle shifters for the 2.0-liter turbocharged TSI four-cylinder engine and standard navigation.

This kitted-up front-drive CC was first seen at Germany's Auto Mobil International show, but Los Angeles marks its Stateside introduction. It is scheduled to hit dealers before year's end.
Sorry, we had to. How many times can you reference Creedence Clearwater Revival in a story about a Volkswagen? For some Fortunate Son or daughter looking to get behind the wheel of the 2013 Volkswagen CC R-Line, we now know how much you'll have to pay the Penthouse Pauper. (Hey, we could do this all day).

MSRP for the R-Line edition of the Volkswagen CC is set at $32,195, not including a destination charge of $795. For that, buyers get unique R-Line visuals including a more sporting grille, projector-style fog lights, along with revised lower front fascia and side skirts. The R-Line also receives 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, while the cabin is fitted with a navigation system and steering wheel mounted paddle shifters augmenting the DSG dual-clutch transmission.

The CC R-Line debuted at Germany's Auto Mobil International show, and it comes equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four sending power to the front wheels. In addition to the DSG, a six-speed manual gearbox is available. The rest of the features list is essentially that of the CC's Sport Plus trim.

You can expect to see the CC R-Line Up Around the Bend or Down On the Corner at your local Volkswagen dealer in the near future (okay, enough) or you can check out our gallery and the official press release below.
Continue reading VW looks out its back door, prices 2013 CC R-Edition at $32,195

VW looks out its back door, prices 2013 CC R-Edition at $32,195 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 19 Oct 2012 17:15:00 EST.
Moving forward, we can expect Volkswagen to shift its design language away from anything remotely extravagant. While speaking at the Tokyo launch of the Volkswagen Up!, company global design chief Walter de'Silva said minimalist styling is set to make a resurgence. De'Silva made it clear he believes design is an integral part of resale value, and that the design of models like the Golf helps solidify his brand's value worldwide. The designer said that while the flashier exteriors of models like the Hyundai Sonata, Ford Fusion and BMW 3 Series have been popular in recent years, he believes such looks are already starting to age. Perhaps that's why the redesigned CC "four-door coupe" shown above seems a bit more traditional than its predecessor.

When first introduced for the 2009 model year, the CC was breathlessly billed by Volkswagen as a "new offering designed and engineered to blend sports car dynamics and dimensions with sedan comfort in a sophisticated package." The company's first four-door coupe arrived with a dramatically swept roofline, frameless doors, a four-passenger cabin and very distinctive looks. It was arguably the most stylish model in the company's entire lineup.

But things have changed for 2013. The automaker has treated its CC to a mid-cycle update that includes a substantial facelift, equipment changes and a new five-passenger cabin for our domestic market.

We recently spent a week with the refreshed Volkswagen CC in the Los Angeles basin. Our primary objective was to see how well the midsize four-door would integrate with family duty. We were also intrigued by its "sports car" claims, as its pricing ambitiously aligns it with some seriously talented competition. Lastly, as some are questioning its validity in the lineup compared to the larger all-new Passat, we wanted to understand its value. How well does the refreshed CC fare? Continue reading to find out.
Continue reading 2013 Volkswagen CC [w/video]

2013 Volkswagen CC [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 16 Jul 2012 11:57:00 EST. We might not get a downsized version of the Volkswagen CC, but we will get an R-Line trim level of the saucy sedan later this year. VW will officiallly pull the wraps off at the Auto Mobil International show in Leipzig, Germany on June 1st. Powered by the 2.0-liter, 200-horsepower four-cylinder and riding on the same 18-inch Mallory alloy wheels featured on the Sport Plus, the R-Line adds the option of a six-speed manual on top of the six-speed DSG transmission.

Exterior changes include a meaner front fascia and round fog lights, sculpted, body-colored side skirts and "shaded" taillights, along with R-Line badging and paddle shifters for the DSG. Otherwise the features list is simply lifted from the Sport Plus.
Have a kurz look at it in the gallery above, and read the press release below for more details.
Continue reading Volkswagen unveils CC R-Line, available late 2012 in U.S.

Volkswagen unveils CC R-Line, available late 2012 in U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 27 May 2012 10:01:00 EST.
We've got bad news for you if you had your heart set on the smaller version of the Volkswagen CC. Car and Driver reports the German automaker has decided the four-door would simply be too expensive to sell in the American market. The article cites unnamed European sources as saying the vehicle still has a strong chance of making it to dealer lots in the EU, even though no final decision has been made at this point. By the time the machine made it to our shores, it would likely be more pricey than the current Passat. That's a problem.

Original reports suggested Volkswagen needed the U.S. market to justify production volumes to sell the new CC in both the EU and China, but the company seems to think the likely small U.S. sales would have little impact anyway. C/D reports the automaker is tentatively planning to sell the smaller CC in the People's Republic anyway.
VW Golf/Jetta CC too expensive to sell in U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 May 2012 10:29:00 EST.
According to Autocar, Volkswagen may be working on a smaller version of the rakish CC <strike>four-door coupe</strike> sedan. Known internally as the SC, the smaller CC will be a part of the seventh-generation Jetta lineup, in addition to the sedan and wagon models.

The creation of the SC comes after Volkswagen's NCC (New Concept Coupe) received lukewarm response at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show. Autocar reports that while consumers do want another variant of the Jetta, a two-door coupe isn't the answer. "Our research suggests there is increasingly a market for a sportier and more stylish version of the Jetta in the mould of the CC only smaller and more affordable. From the feedback we've received so far buyers want an individual bodystyle and the practicality of four doors," a source within Volkswagen told the British magazine.

A more stylish Jetta sedan would likely do battle with the new Mercedes-Benz CLC, set to debut in concept form at the Beijing Motor Show later this year. If the SC does come to market, it will likely launch in Europe sometime in 2015, right around the time the next-generation CC arrives.
Baby Volkswagen CC in the works? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Mar 2012 16:16:00 EST.
When European deliveries of the then new Volkswagen Passat CC started back in late 2007, even in its home market, the know-it-alls received it with skepticism. There didn't seem to be any burning need for a sexed-up four-door based on a Passat chassis. Was there an audience large enough for a Mercedes-Benz CLS-inspired sedan for the coupe-loving common family?

Apparently the smug automotive intelligentsia was wrong about the CC. In four years, the image-enhancing four-door with the swoopy body has quietly sold 320,000 units worldwide. Last we checked, that's a lot for something supposedly meant to fill a niche.

For the 2013 model year, the CC is receiving a mid-life updo in the form of several small but important touches. The unfortunate news is that many of the premium upgrades happening in this freshened CC for the European market will not come out to play in North America. But enough of them will, making a First Drive the proper thing to do. Besides, it's the least we could do when VW has finally changed the name of the car worldwide from the European "Passat CC" to the simpler "CC" moniker favored Stateside.

2013 Volkswagen CC originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 19 Jan 2012 11:58:00 EST.
As we announced earlier this month, the refreshed 2013 Volkswagen CC four-door sedan flaunts a new front and rear end that better aligns its styling with the rest of the Volkswagen model range. Bi-xenon headlamps, with LED daytime running lamps, are now standard on the nose as are LED lamps on the tail. To complete the transformation, there are also new 17- and 18-inch wheels.

The very welcomed news is that the CC is now able to accommodate five passengers (or four plus a child seat) thanks to a flat cushion and an extra set of belts between the rear seats. The five-passenger cabin is optional, but we expect it to be popular.

The standard powertrain is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder rated at 200 horsepower mated to a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch. Front-wheel drive is the sole choice with the four-cylinder model. The optional engine is a 3.6-liter six-cylinder, rated at 280 horsepower. A six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive are standard, but Volkswagen's 4motion all-wheel drive is optional with the V6.

Look for pricing information to be released closer to its showroom arrival in the first quarter of 2012.
Continue reading 2013 Volkswagen CC reveals facelift and optional seating for five

2013 Volkswagen CC reveals facelift and optional seating for five originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 16 Nov 2011 15:48:00 EST.
Without a doubt, the big story from Volkswagen this year was the launch of its all-new, American-built 2012 Passat. And while the sun is about to set on 2011, Volkswagen is now announcing some updates for the Passat's svelte sister, the CC, which will make its official debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month.

For the 2013 model year, the CC benefits from a refreshed front and rear fascia, both of which are more akin to the styling direction seen on the larger Passat sedan. Up front, bi-xenon headlamps with LED running lamps are now offered as standard equipment - part of the CC's reworked nose that incorporates a new grille and lower fascia. Around back, the taillamps have been redesigned to look more like the new units found on the Jetta and Passat.

Volkswagen hasn't released any information - yet - about powertrain or interior upgrades, but we don't expect things to change too much here. The one interior photo that VW released looks almost identical to the current model, though we won't rule out some packaging or color combination changes. Under the hood, expect both the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder and 3.6-liter V6 with 4Motion all-wheel drive to carry over unchanged.

Pricing for the 2013 CC will likely be announced closer to the car's on-sale date next spring. We'll have more details at the LA Auto Show in just a few weeks, but in the meantime, click past the jump for Volkswagen's brief press release.
Continue reading 2013 Volkswagen CC nip/tuck revealed ahead of LA debut

2013 Volkswagen CC nip/tuck revealed ahead of LA debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 Nov 2011 18:00:00 EST.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has awarded two vehicles Top Safety Pick awards. After testing eight mid-size to large sedans, the IIHS has called out the 2011-12 Volkswagen CC and 2011 Saab 9-5 for its highest award. Both vehicles earned "good" ratings for front, side, rear and rollover protection during testing. It should be noted, however, that only the front-wheel-drive VW CC gets the Top Safety nod, as the all-wheel-drive version only received an "acceptable" rating in rollover testing.

The IIHS also tested Lexus IS, Lexus ES, Infiniti G, Chevrolet Impala, BMW 3 Series and Saab 9-3. The rest of the vehicles had score ratings ranging from good to acceptable, but it was the Saab 9-5 and Volkswagen CC (FWD) that walked away with a clean sweep in all tests. Check out the brief press release after the break.
Continue reading 2011 Saab 9-5 and Volkswagen CC earn IIHS Top Safety Pick awards

2011 Saab 9-5 and Volkswagen CC earn IIHS Top Safety Pick awards originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Jun 2011 18:31:00 EST.
The 2012 Passat may be garnering the majority of our attention over at Volkswagen, but looking ahead, it appears that the swoopier CC is due for a facelift. Unsurprisingly, these camouflaged testers show a front fascia that's more akin to what we see on both the Passat and Jetta. We've always been big fans of the CC's styling, so let's hope that the more sedate front end still translates well onto the sedan's overall shape.

We can expect a slightly revised rear fascia to accompany the changes up front, and new wheel choices will likely be offered for the 2013 model year. The CC's interior will get a slight touching-up, as well. Mum's the word on powertrain options, but we wouldn't be surprised if the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four and 3.6-liter V6 carry over largely unchanged.
2013 Volkswagen CC getting new corporate face originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Jun 2011 15:01:00 EST.
It struck back on March 11th, 2011, but the earthquake in Japan continues to cause havoc all around the world in some unique ways. Rumor has it that if you were hoping to purchase a Volkswagen with a rearview camera, you're going to have to wait a while. According to AskaVWSalesGuy.com, Volkswagen has put a halt on backup camera installation on most vehicles in its lineup.

Affected models and trims include the CC Lux Plus, Lux Limited and VR6, all Touareg models and the Tiguan SEL with Premium Nav. Per the in-the-know VW sales guy, Volkswagen is on the hunt for a new supplier. We asked Volkswagen for comment and were told that the matter was being investigated.
VW phasing out rearview cameras thanks to quake shortages? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 Jun 2011 09:31:00 EST.
We're not sure if you've noticed, but we've officially entered the dog days of Summer. And while that means that temperatures have begun crawling their way to the triple digits in certain portions of the country, it also means that genuine auto industry news has slowed somewhat. Of course, that won't stop the interwebs from generating a very unique brand of news that's all its own. Where hard facts and quotes fail to materialize, the hallowed rumor will be more than happy to take over. In that spirit, Autocar is reporting that Volkswagen is mulling the creation of a long-roof version of its CC four-door coupe.

According to the UK publication, an unnamed source within the manufacturer leaked the plans for a CC wagon, and the company's board will vote on whether or not to build the vehicle later this year. The reasoning behind the model seems stable enough - Autocar says that since Passat is on its way out in the U.S. and the car's successor won't be available in wagon trim, the company will need something to fill the void. But the CC? Really? Time will tell, we suppose, but call us skeptical on this one. If true, we're fully expecting VW to claim that it is poised to build the world's first five-door coupe - you know, if Mercedes-Benz doesn't beat them to the punch.

Volkswagen had a particular thing in mind when designing the Passat CC: a stylish four-seater. That is why the rear seats are recessed and separated by a cubby with a sliding plastic top.

Enough European buyers, however, asked for another seat in the back, so VW decided to give them one. Well, kind of. The company left leather in place of the cubby and added a headrest and a seat belt. And a €100 ($142 U.S.) charge. While it looks good, we can't imagine it feels good. So to all you fifth wheels out there who'll end up in the back of a CC, we wish you good luck.

It is not yet clear whether VWAG will offer American CC customers the bench, but we're looking into it. In the meantime, read VW's press release on the new option after the jump.

2010 Volkswagen Passat CC R-Line - Click above for high-res image gallery

Volkswagen just opened the order book on the Passat CC with the R-Line package in Europe. We saw this car at the Frankfurt Motor Show and were completely smitten with it. Taking the regular CC's swoopy coupedan shape and adding the R-Line package makes it just about perfect. What stops it from being perfect is the fact that the R-Line package doesn't add any oomph. Just like Audi's S-Line, its alterations are mainly cosmetic.

The R-Line package adds an aero kit, surprisingly modest "Mallory" pattern 17-inch wheels, R-Line emblems, smoked taillights, R-Line aluminum sill plates, a unique three-spoke multifunction leather-wrapped steering wheel, front foglamps, and the Park Pilot system.

It becomes the eighth R-Line model in Volkswagen's lineup and will add 2,200 euro to the price of your CC - about $3,200 in Yankee bucks. Full press release after the jump and plenty of live and press pics below.

Oh Volkswagen. How is it that the automaker of the people makes what just might be the sleekest, sexiest sedan in the world? No offense to A-M's Rapide, but the Volkswagen CC is not a two-door coupe with a stretch and some rear-doors grafted on. The CC is clean sheet, or at least as clean sheet as the Passat's hard points allow for. And now with the CC R, it's even better looking. And no, we're still not buying the four-door coupe marketing nonsense, no matter how many times someone quotes Wikipedia at us. The CC R is dreamboat sedan.
Let's get the obvious out of the way: CC R - tee hee hee. We can't imagine the "there's a bad moon on the right" jokes ever ceasing. That's mindless naming conventions for you. Aside from that, the R badge (or R-line as they call it here in the land of yummy sausage, pickled everything and friendly, frisky fräuleins) is very identical to Audi's S-line. So all show and no go. But if you're going to do it...
We still cringe upon hearing marketing types utter the phrase "four-door coupe." It's inherently a lie, a scam. Who are they trying to fool? It's not a four-door coupe, it's a sedan with a sloping roof - generally one that's missing a middle rear-seat. And there's nothing wrong with that. But, just like automakers the world 'round bend over backwards corrupting the language to avoid calling a station wagon anything but a station wagon (Sportback, Avant, Sportcombi, etc.), the oxymoronic four-door coupe appears to be here to stay. Where's George Carlin when you need him? With that rant out of the way, the 2009 Volkswagen CC is the best four-door coupe we've ever driven - at least this side of a Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG, which is three times the price.
