I need you to understand what it's like to drive this car. I'm not talking about your ability to comprehend the words on this page or process the figures that surround the 2014 Porsche Cayman S, but rather what it feels like to take control of a car conceived, designed, engineered and manufactured to set your prefrontal cortex alight with all the glee a Zippo typically reserves for pine needles marinated in jet fuel. From the instant you put your tail in the driver's seat, the Cayman sets about impregnating your veins with a full and varied spectrum of ludicrous emotion. It's not like taking the family pickup to market, I can tell you that much.

For 2014, the next-generation Cayman features many of the same styling tweaks first displayed on the coupe's drop-top cousin, the Boxster, though a spate of mechanical changes, more power, less weight and better efficiency join the party to further differentiate this model from its predecessor. And while additions like rev-matched downshifts and electronic power steering help push the Cayman into a new era, one fact remains unchanged: This is one of the best driving cars on the market. Period. Bear with me and I'll try to explain exactly why that is.
Continue reading 2014 Porsche Cayman S

2014 Porsche Cayman S originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 19 Feb 2013 11:57:00 EST.
Hagerty Insurance, which specializes in covering cars already deemed classics, is out with its annual Hot List predicting this year's ten cars that will be future collectibles. Even though it stays under $100,000, it spans almost $74,000 in MSRPs starting with the $23,700 Ford Focus ST on the affordable end and peaking with the $97,395 SRT Viper.

Other notables include the Chevrolet Corvette Convertible 427, what with 2013 being both the 60th anniversary of the brand and the last year of the C6, the 505-horsepower 427 special edition being a send-off to the sports car that always does well in the last model year of a particular generation. The Tesla Model S collects yet another award for delivering a welcome and overdue shock to the electric-car game and is the only sedan to make the list, and the Subaru BRZ also adds to its trophy chest, the lightweight coupe doing so much with so little that it might be worth a packet after Father Time has waved his staff a few times.

You can check out the rest of Hagerty's picks in the press release below.
Continue reading Hagerty predicts this year's future classics

Hagerty predicts this year's future classics originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 31 Jan 2013 17:59:00 EST. The automaker can tease us all they want with word of a "new compact sports car," but we know what the score is: the new Cayman is on the way, and we're ready for it.

That said, no one has seen what the next-generation of the sub-911 coupe looks like... that is, until now. Photos of the new Cayman, taken by Instagram user "Frod1966," have popped up online. The hardtop Porsche was photographed in a warehouse of sorts, and still has the packing wraps on the headlights and taillights. It can be seen next to a 911 Coupe, so perhaps this duo is, in fact, on its way to the LA Show?

While design elements like the teardrop roof and pronounced rear fenders are retained from the outgoing model, the new Cayman features updates shared with the latest Boxster, such as the gaping air intake ahead of the rear wheels and a spoiler that melds seamlessly into the taillights.

While the base model of the Cayman will likely get the 265-horsepower 2.7-liter flat-six engine, the dual center tailpipes and larger front air intakes suggest that this may be the Cayman S, complete with a 3.4-liter boxer-six making 315 horsepower. But for now, its purely conjecture; you'll know for sure when we bring you coverage from the 2012 LA Auto Show in just two weeks!
2013 Porsche Cayman spotted in the wild originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 16 Nov 2012 15:45:00 EST.
The big sellers for Porsche may be the Cayenne and Panamera these days, but the automaker's sports cars are still a huge priority. We'll be seeing an all-new 911, dubbed 991, later this year, and judging by these latest spy shots, the smaller Cayman coupe is due for an overhaul in the not-too-distant future.

Details are slim about what we can expect with the next Cayman (and its roofless Boxster sibling), though reports have stated that the S models will be powered by a 3.4-liter flat-six, with power somewhere in the 320- to 350-horsepower range. Expect both PDK dual-clutch and manual transmissions to be offered, though it's unsure if the Cayman will get the fabled seven-speed manual 'box that will work its way into the new 911. We've even heard rumors of a Cayman Targa.

In any case, with the 911 taking much of the spotlight this year, it'll likely be well into 2012 before the next-generation Cayman hits the streets.
Next-gen Porsche Cayman attacks the 'Ring originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 11:28:00 EST.
The third round of the Autobacs Super GT series wrapped up last weekend at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia, and while the race was plenty entertaining, the on-track action got started long before the green flag waved. Event organizers got bunch of exotic cars together for a special pre-race parade lap. Unfortunately, it looks like not everyone was paying attention when traffic bowed up. The driver of a Porsche Cayman S managed to punt the Ferrari 360 Modena ahead of him into a Ferrari California (the fan reaction is great). We can imagine that the Ferrari owners had a few words for the wayward Porsche driver.

There aren't too many details available on the incident, but we'd have a hard time imagining that anyone was injured from such a low-speed impact. If only the same could be said for the Porsche pilot's ego. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.
Continue reading Porsche Cayman causes three-car pileup in parade of exotics

Porsche Cayman causes three-car pileup in parade of exotics originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 26 Jun 2011 19:01:00 EST.
Porsche has just unveiled the newest addition to its stable: the 2012 Porsche Cayman S Black Edition. Along with that sinister paint scheme, the vehicle packs an extra 10 horsepower over the standard Cayman S and rolls on unique 19-inch Boxster Spyder wheels. That bumps the final pony figure up to 330 hp, which helps the vehicle scoot to 60 miles per hour in a scan 4.6 seconds.

Outside, all of the vehicle's chrome accents have been painted black for the ultimate stealth look, and that theme carries on indoors. Black is the only available interior color, though brushed stainless steel and aluminum accents are littered throughout the cabin for a little flair. Even the gauges have been doused dark, and a Sport Design steering wheel is part of the package, too.

The Cayman S Black Edition toes the same line as the Boxster S and 911 Black Editions by offering the Porsche Convenience package as standard equipment. The 500 buyers lucky enough to sink their teeth into this model will be treated to adaptive bi-xenon headlights and rain-sensing wipers, among other kit, and navigation is standard, as well.

If you like what you see, Porsche will kindly ask for $67,500 for the pleasure of ownership. Hit the jump for the full press blast.
Continue reading 2012 Porsche Cayman S Black Edition joins the dark side

2012 Porsche Cayman S Black Edition joins the dark side originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 May 2011 12:59:00 EST.
According to Porsche enthusiast site Planet-9.com, a hardcore version of the Cayman, dubbed CS or Clubsport, will be shown at this year's Los Angeles Auto Show in December. This isn't the first time we've heard rumblings of a lighter, more powerful Cayman, but now that Porsche has successfully launched the Boxster Spyder, it's only fitting that the same sort of package be offered on its harder-core hardtop sister.

Expect the Clubsport to produce around 333 horsepower from its 3.4-liter flat-six, an increase of 13 hp over the Cayman S. From there, lightweight 19-inch wheels will be standard, as will fabric door pulls, aluminum body components and a slightly revised front fascia that we've seen on the Boxster Spyder. Obviously, the real goal with a Clubsport model is lightness, and Planet-9 reports that the CS should be about 162 to 184 pounds lighter than the stock Cayman S.

If the LA Auto Show reveal stands true, the Cayman CS should be hitting the road sometime in 2011 as a 2012 model, priced from around $66,300. Fingers crossed, everyone.

Brit buff mag Autocar says that Porsche is readying a lightweight version of the new Cayman, with plans to create a single-make racing series for it as it already does with the 911. The Porsche Cayman Clubsport, as it'll reportedly be called, will weigh 220 pounds (100 kg) less than the standard-issue car. The weight savings will come via a stripped interior, lighter bodywork and wheels, and a "simplified" lighting system. Engine/transmission changes aren't expected to be part of the go-fast recipe, but the 314-horsepower six that's fitted to new Cayman S ought to deliver more than ample punch in the lighter Clubsport. Autocar says that a price premium of £4K is expected over the regular Cayman S, and that the car should arrive in the UK market in October. Porsche finally gives the Cayman S an engine that makes it a legit alternative consideration to the 911, and now it seems ready to turn up the heat even further with a lightweight version. Man, where do we sign up?

Gallery: 2010 Porsche Cayman S

[Source: Autocar]
REPORT: Porsche Cayman Clubsport coming in October originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 24 Jan 2009 20:01:00 EST.

Even as the industry swirls in turmoil, Porsche continues to offer hope to enthusiasts as they relentlessly increase performance without sacrificing efficiency. For 2009, Porsche has given the Boxster and Cayman a mild facelift, along with updating the interior and accessories. More importantly, and following in the footsteps of the 911 Carrera PDK, all 2009 Cayman and Boxster models are also offered with the Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe transmission (aka PDK). Mated to the new transmission are two significantly reworked engines featuring direct injection. The result is more power, and improved fuel economy (we shouldn't fail to mention that the PDK accelerates faster than the six-speed manual). Porsche is offering two engines in 2009. The standard engine is a 2.9-liter flat-six rated at 255 hp. The "S" models are fitted with a more powerful 3.4-liter sending 310 hp to the gearbox. Like the Carrera, go-fast options on the sporty mid-engine two-seaters include active suspension (PASM) and ceramic brakes (PCCB). Look for both to arrive in showrooms in early 2009.

As you can see in the galleries below, their noses and tails have been redone with a touch of Carrera GT, but each car now has a unique look. More importantly, the engines and transmissions have been updated as well, with the 2.9L and 3.4L powerplants getting Porsche's direct fuel injection for a 10-25 hp bump depending on the model. Along with the extra oomph, owners will get better mileage with fuel economy rising 11-16 percent. Part of that boosted mileage comes from the direct-injected engines, but the newly available Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, or PDK, double-clutch gearbox also deserves praise.

The base Boxster and Cayman will now have 255 hp and 265 hp respectively, and the S versions will be rated at 310 for the Boxster S and 320 for the Cayman S. A Cayman S with PDK and Launch Control will also get to to 62 mph in just 4.9 seconds. At the other end of the lineup, the Boxster with a six-speed manual will do it in 5.9 seconds. Gas mileage should run 25.5-26.4 mpg. The new models will hit the market in February 2009, with European prices ranging from Euro 38,600 for a base Boxster to 61,493 for a Cayman S. The full press release is after the jump, and we have official high-res images set up in the galleries below. Plus we'll have our own live, firsthand impressions in a few hours.

Gallery: 2010 Porsche Boxster

Gallery: 2010 Porsche Cayman

[Source: Porsche]
Continue reading LA 2008: Porsche to debut freshened Boxster and Cayman with PDK

LA 2008: Porsche to debut freshened Boxster and Cayman with PDK originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 19 Nov 2008 12:27:00 EST.
To many, the Porsche Cayman is just a look-alike twin to the drop-top Porsche Boxster. While it shares a platform, underpinnings, and even engine choices with its two-seat sibling, the Cayman performs a decidedly different role and delivers even more gratifying performance. Porsche dropped off a top-of-the-line Cayman S in the Autoblog Garage. It offers a more powerful engine and larger brakes over the standard Cayman model. Follow the jump to read our impressions on the Porsche Cayman S after we held the keys in our hands for a week.

Porsche Design, as you know, is perhaps best known for its consumer products and their simple, upscale design aesthetic. With this 777-car limited edition, Porsche has worked to incorporate the Porsche Design look into a Cayman S. The gauge cluster takes on the appearance of a Porsche Design chrono, and the entire car is finished in black inside and out. The body is lowered 10mm and the exterior is further set off by the 19" 911 Turbo wheels and matte black accent striping on the doors, hood, roof, and rear deck. Black Alcantara and a special plaque on the instrument panel help trim out the passenger cabin. Each car also comes with a briefcase packed with Porsche Design goods including a chronograph, pen, sunglasses, knife, and keyring. Like the car, these personal items are finished in all black. Porsche Design Edition 1 sales kick off in Germany this November, with US sales following in January of 2008. The price? €58,600 in Germany (€69,942 with the 19% VAT factored in). We presume US pricing will be announced closer to its arrival Stateside and don't harbor any doubts that Porsche will easily sell out the 777-car run.

[Source: Porsche]

Gallery: Porsche Cayman S "Porsche Design Edition 1"

Continue reading Blackout: Porsche unveils limited-edition Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1

Blackout: Porsche unveils limited-edition Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 14 Aug 2007 08:33:00 EST. The new wind-tunnel-tested set of upgrades reduces lift at speed thanks to the installation of new lip spoilers and a fixed rear wing. The changes up front are fine and all, but we think the rear wing takes away from the clean look the standard Cayman sports in back. Form follows function, however, and you can't order the pieces individually. A check for €3,500 written to Porsche Exclusive in Germany will score you a set of the components pre-painted in factory colors to match your ride. Unpainted kits will be available from Porsche Tequipment in March at €2,950 for customers looking to do additional customization on their own.

Porsche's press release is pasted after the jump.

[Source: Porsche AG]

Gallery: Porsche Cayman Aerokit

Continue reading Porsche releases factory Aerokit for Cayman line

Porsche releases factory Aerokit for Cayman line originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Feb 2007 12:34:00 EST. The Boxster line, which now includes the fixed-roof Cayman variant, is in the midst of its tenth year on the road. Production of the Boxster and Cayman exceeded 27,000 cars for FY 05/06, reflecting the model's growth since its introduction. At that time, Porsche expected 15,000 cars to be produced annually.

Car number 200,000 was a Boxster S born at Valmet Automotive in Finland and destined for a US customer -- no surprise, as the North American continent accounts for 40% of global Boxster sales. With styling clearly inspired by the Spyders of yore, the Boxster has evolved from concept car to a brand name as recognizable and important as Porsche's other star, the 911. And like its big brother, it serves an aspirational vehicle to many. Over the last ten years, the phrase "first Porsche" and "Boxster" became synonymous for an undetermined number of enthusiasts. A first Porsche is undoubtedly a special thing, and so, by extension is the Boxster.

Congratulations to Porsche on reaching the milestone.

(Press release after the jump)

[Source: Porsche]
Continue reading Porsche produces 200,000th Boxster

Porsche produces 200,000th Boxster originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 20 Nov 2006 15:04:00 EST. Porsche tuners appear to be having their fair share of fun with the Boxster-based coupe, and here, Strosek Design is no exception.

There are varying degrees of tune, of course. The "lighter" tuning packages bumps the car's factory output of 295 horsepower up to a more robust 320. There is another option, however -- a 3.8L engine upgrade that gives the Cayman 380 horses and shaves .7 seconds off its 0-100km/h (62 mph) time, which becomes 4.7 sec. It also elevates its top speed from 171 to 179 mph.

Bodywork changes are fairly abundant, yet are more subtle than what you see from some other tuners. Of, course, there are the basics: a new front spoiler, rocker panels, and a larger carbon fiber replacement for the Cayman's stock motorized rear spoiler. In addition to those, Strosek also fits a roof spoiler, rear diffuser, and new rearview mirrors. Finally, the factory openings ahead of the rear wheels are enclosed in new ram air boxes.

Changes to the car's dynamics range from new springs to a full sport suspension dialed in on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The de rigeur wheel and tire upgrades are available in 19" and 20" sizes, and the interior can be dressed up in almost any number of ways.

The changes are both effective and generally tasteful, though we'd happily ditch the extra decals seen in a couple of the accompanying photos. Other than that, if we were to find one in our garage, you'd hear no complaints from us -- just happy giggles.

(Photos, press release after the jump)

[Source: Strosek]
Continue reading Strosek Porsche Cayman boasts up to 380 HP

Strosek Porsche Cayman boasts up to 380 HP originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 26 Aug 2006 17:02:00 EST. Bored out to 99mm, it receives larger pistons, a new crankshaft, sports camshafts, and modified intake and exhaust systems. Accordingly, the engine management electronics are reprogrammed to handle all the changes. The net result: displacement grows to 3.8 liters, producing a healthy 385 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque.

Cars equipped with Porsche's PASM get TechArt's VarioPlus coil-over suspension, which allows ride-height lowering of up to 25mm and lets the driver select between Sport and Normal suspension modes via a cockpit-mounted control. Regardless of which one is selected, the dampers firm up automatically in sport driving conditions. Stylish five-spoke TechArt Formula lightweight wheels fitted with low-profile Continental ContiSportContact tires fill the wells nicely -- 19" in front and 20" in back.

Everything gets wrapped up in a spectacular body kit. The new front assembly incorporates a deep apron featuring large intakes and integrated driving lights. A 911 GT3-style vent resides ahead of the trunklid. Sculpted side skirts carry the aggressive look to the rear, where you're immediately drawn to a new bumper with integrated carbon-fiber diffuser and a large carbon-fiber wing featuring an extendable gurney flap.

TechArt will customize the interior according to the buyer's specifications. Pricing for the GTsport begins at €100,000. That price gets you the baddest-looking Cayman on the road, with power to match the looks.

(More info, photos after the jump)

[Source: TechArt]
AutoCar has driven the new Audi TT, and proclaimed it to be a genuine Porsche Cayman S rival.

With a combination of sharpened responses, reduced weight, improved power and the availability of the improved S-Tronic dual-clutch gearbox, the magazine indicates that the four-ringed fashion statement has come good with enthusiasts.

Their conclusion?

There's no question about it: the new TT has taken a huge leap forward in the way it drives. Like the latest RS4, it proves that Ingolstadt's attitude to dynamics has changed out of all recognition compared with the uninspiring Audis of the past decade or more.

We can't wait to get our mitts on one and see for ourselves.

The maxi-Cayman hustles from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds, and from 0 to 200 km/h in less than 15 seconds. For customers in less of a hurry, 9ff also offers 380-hp and 350-hp versions.

The 9ff aero kit is fairly simple, comprising a high downforce front bumper with augmented air intakes and built-in splitter, and a rear diffuser cover adapted to the 9ff dual exhaust system.

The Cayman rides on 9ff's custom 3-piece center-lock 19-inch forged aluminum wheels, sporting 235/35 tires in front, and 265/30 tires in the rear. The "Hockenheim" sport chassis kit for the Cayman includes fully adjustable coilover shocks.

A full-on CR-42 sells for about $164,500 in Europe. If you're in the U.S., give Eurocar Boutique a call. More pics follow the break.

[Sources: 9ff, Eurocar Boutique, Worldcarfans.com]
Continue reading Porsche Cayman S gets the tuner treatment

Porsche Cayman S gets the tuner treatment originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 31 May 2006 08:05:00 EST. Putting out 50 hp less than than its bigger sibling, the Cayman's 2.7-liter engine still provides satisfying performance, with a 0-100 km/h time of 6.1 seconds. Interestingly, the Cayman's 2.7-liter offers 5 hp more than the Boxster's, giving the coupe a tenth of a second advantage in the 0-100 km/h sprint.

A five-speed manual is standard, along with the Porsche Stability Management system. An option package offers a six-speed combined with the Porsche Active Stability Management system, while a third version will be available with the Tiptronic S five-speed automatic.

The Cayman will sticker at $49,400 in the U.S., vs. $58,900 for the Cayman S.

Reuters speculates that flagging sales of the Boxster may have driven Porsche to a quick launch of the Cayman, in an effort to freshen up the lower end of its model range.

[Sources: Porsche, Reuters]

Porsche launching entry-level Cayman originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 May 2006 23:43:00 EST.
